Man, Dave, and Sugar, are one, of the best ! I, do love all their music, and all their songs ! I, grew up, listening, to all their music ! Their songs, do touch my heart !
My dad loved Dave and The Sugar and, The Door Is Always Open, was his favorite by them and, he knew all the words to this song. My favorite song by Dave and The Sugar is The Queen of The Sliver Dollar and, I know all the words to that song. They had some great sing along songs but, even those you could really dance to. Give Me Some of that Late Night Country Lovin Music is a fun tune.
This song has been recorded by several others including Waylon and now by Jamey Johnson, but I think this is the best version. When the Second Sugar girl chimes in after the second verse "When he reaches out to touch me" I think that is the most haunting country music lyric. Her voice is incredible
Call this Dave & Sugar version 1.5: Sue Powell, Dave Rowland and Vicki Hagemann. they sang together from late '77 till 1979. Sue had replaced original singer Jackie Frantz; Vicki would leave in '79 and be replaced by Melissa Dean.
They call that a "stage" clap. When several people on a stage are clapping at the same time, the sound can be overewhelming and it can be difficult to hear all the words. That's how we clapped when I sang in a chorus.
i think that they have now mess country music today what they call country music i call rejected rolland rock bring back the good ole country music of yester year
I'm not being critical or anything of that nature here, but notice Dave @ 00:23, he seems to be imitating Elvis Presley when Elvis would sometimes do that when he sang. Good live performance.
@PhiberOptik001 It was more like yearly (on average) that he replaced them, but if there was any harassment on Dave's part, I'd have to ask the Sugar ladies. Anyway, I think other factors were at play, including some gals tiring of the hectic schedule that being on the road entails, or (in Sue Powell's case) wanting solo careers, or getting married & starting families.
I LOVE this song. Dave & Sugar were one of my favorite groups growing up. Thanks for posting.

0:57 Dave Rowland & Vicki Hackeman Baker both passed away in 2018. But the music they leave behind will endure for generations to come.

@Aphidboy Well said; I feel for ya. Similar events occured in my life in '89. Different soundtrack however.
That was Vicki Hackeman (now Vicki Baker). The other gal, who sang part of the 2nd verse, was Sue Powell (now Sue Scott).
and when he reaches out to touch me....with my face turned toward the wall is the correct lyrics
i think that they have now mess country music today what they call country music i call rejected rolland rock bring back the good ole country music of yester year

"will my face turn towards the wall"
You will never know

Do you have Silver Threads & Golden Needles.
Ouch.
I see Dave trying to emulate Elvis Presley some.
can you say 'land of the infinite three-ways'?
