    Only in country music can a song about a voodoo queen be a number one hit. The song itself is very funny.

    This show was actually done in 1979 during the International Festival of Country Music gigs in several different countries. Trivia look up The Syndicate of Sound song Little Girl from 1966, to see Don Baskin singing. He is standing in this show near Bobby playing rhythm guitar and I am playing drums here, and also appeared in the Syndicate of Sound way back then.

    sorry pal, it´s an old southern traditional from somewhere in the swamps around New Orleans (cajun music) written by the turn of the last century which is why that whitch has got a french name, Marie Laveaux... on UA-cam you can find older versions, e.g. Papa Celestins Jazz Band and others. I love Dr. Hooks version though not trying to be the smart guy here but a lot of "down south" musicians are still playing this tune to this very day... regards from germany...

    Not "for" but when I was playing the Saddle Rack in San Jose he played there and the band I was in opened for him... and he was "Killer" !!!

    You're right roughwound, I'm 26 and HATE this new CRAP. The classic country era set the stage for REAL talent, I just wonder who did the screaming for this song other than the crowd. I LOVE THE CLASSICS!!

    @1963legion "marie laveau" is an old new orleans traditional also done by dr. hook and the medicine show
    rearranged by shel silverstein. i got a record from the early fifties with trumpeter "papa" celestin and band doing their version of it. who originally wrote it i have no clue though, most probably written in the 20ies...

    o.k. now. do yourself a favour and look up "Papa" Celestins Jazz band on UA-cam and you´ll hear the same song recordet approx. 60 yrs ago. Shel Silverstein may have added a few different words to it but that song is an New Orleans original. I love all kinds of music, esp. jazz and southern stuff... dont forget a few members if not all??? of Dr. Hook were southeners... look it up as I said, you`ll be surprised... btw. Shel S. also in my eyes is a genious, no doubt.. see ya.. Kieran

    Shel Silverstein was Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show.....

  • @shaunlamb7922
    @shaunlamb7922 11 років тому +1

    Shel silverstein didn't write it. It was written by Doctor Hook and the Medicine Show in 1971 and first produced by Bobby Bare in 1974. Silverstein sang it in 1976. Look it up. I study the occult and mythology. I have done extensive research on Marie LaVeau.

    "youre right from ur side,I´m right from mine,but we´re both just one too many mornings and a thousand miles behind.." (BobDylan)... ure not interested in other ppls music?? I pitty u for that... look it up for gods sake.... "Marie Laveaux" by "Papa" Celestin Jazz Band" rec. approx. 1954... Bobby Bare´s version is a lot closer to the original "swamp" one... I like what I´m saying btw & voodoo´s got a lot of power once you know how to deal with it.... open ur eyes,open ur ears & u´ll be there....

  • @moominpic

    Messed up that the whole song rides that terrific bass line, plus the bass player is the one that gives the scream, yet no recognition. The life of the lowly bassist...
