Sounion - Ancient Greek Music

- Music by Farya Faraji. This is an attempt at a historical reconstruction of Ancient Greek music based on the information available to us. Information on Ancient Greek music can be found in my Epic Talking playlist, alongside academic sources.
The main instrument used here is an approximation of the Greek pandoura lute, although the model I have uses nylgut strings (artifical gut strings that are nylon based) instead of the historical gut strings that would have been used back then, which alters the timbre of the instrument.
The melody is an improvisation using the Dorian Diatonic mode (now called Phrygian; the names were swapped in the Middle-Ages), and the Lydian Chromatic Mode.

I wonder, is it possible to get tabs for this? I’d actually like to figure out how to play it on an electric guitar or even a bass guitar.
👏👏🔥🔥
Goat?
I never would have thought to accurately call Farya's lute playing as "gutless and artificial" and also mean it as a compliment.
Could you elaborate?
@@LeRoyEngloysread about the instrument in the description. I didn’t get it at first either.
@@eeyorehaferbock7870 thanks
@@eeyorehaferbock7870 oh, ok i had read the description but i didn't even realize
It's amazing that Nearya Nearaji got to convince Aristoxenos Diabetikos from 469 BCE to record this composition for us. Truly one of the great heralds of genetic memory.
Indeed. Also, Aristoxenos Diabetikos gets me every time 😂😂
Although I'm Persian but I feel a strong connection with Greece
Greetings to people of hellas from Iran
You never disappoint farya looking forward to new persian music 💚🤍❤️🦁☀️🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
That's what Darius said
@@taowroland8697 well said Darius the great👌✨

I've always wondered what ancient Greek music sounded like...thanks for sharing this with us!
One day we need to see Farya and Aristoxenos engage in a polite and civil discussion about Ancient Greek music
Baradar's song is so fire it set the library of Alexandria on fire 🔥
A Roman citizen played it once, and half of Rome felt it.
I am so proud to be a Greek a Byzantine and Arkadian 🇬🇷
my boy Oxigenos Emoroides is back whith another banger
Pérotin is jealous
Thank you for reconstructing ancient traditional music!
I don't usually enjoy lute solos without lyrics but goddamn this is getting a spot on my playlist when it gets onto spotify. As usual, music that makes me hurt from vibing along.
p.s. I was wondering if you could make a Northern Berber themed song, especially as their musical traditions are pretty similar to Greek and Arabic traditions, and as most of the chants and hymns they recite (called izlan) are deeply romantic and/or nostalgic and can present a bittersweet eloquence at times.
Yet another Farya w. I LOVED your Spartan Dance song and hope to see more Ancient Greek music soon!
more greek music please
Why didn't they ask you to do the soundtrack for the Netflix series about Alexander the Great?
I love how mystical and distant the music of our ancestors can hear to us.
A nice, relaxing melody to listen while studying. Thanks Farya!
Noice, do more of different authentic European and Iranian songs.
Another gem to listen to and love. I was expecting a good ancient greek piece any sooner now. Great as always. Keep the amazing work
Thank you Farya for doing what you do
Greeting from Keratea the closest city to Sounion with more than 10.000 people!

Wow, I'm actually early for something! Nice.
I love it! The phrygian mode is one of my favorites.
I do like the normal Dorian Mode a bit more but it is nice too.
I love your Middle Ages music, and I love your Renaissance music. I also love the early Modern Balkan music. It's all fantastic. But it's when you cover the era of Antiquity that really, truly excites me. Be it Roman, Greek, Iranian or beyond. I think it's because so precious few artists attempt to authentically recreate music of this period. It's very special.
I thought it sounded like in 300 😳
Вы очень талантливый музыкант,Фария! Где продюсеры, которые познакомят мир с Фариа Фараджи?!
Большинство мира слушают музыку с западными попсовыми мотивами, поэтому это сложно осуществить.
Farya, you've done it again. I somehow imagine this as accompanying an ancient performance of Homer. Your performances always take me to another time and place. Thank you.
Te Laudamos Farya Faraji. Y disfrutamos de tu musica
Good stuff as always mate
I've been studying the ancient Greek modes and genuses for a bit now, but there's too few examples recorded of how they may have actually been used. Much appreciated!
If you ever need more info, I have this 2 hour video that has timestamps and catalogues every known mode of Ancient Greek music.

You can also find video essays where I explain Ancient Greek modes in my Epic Talking playlist in case you haven't seen them.
Cheers!
That's interesting, thanks, Farya! 🎉😊
very dombra type vibes (which i suppose adds up given that the instruments are related)
ancient lutes really are kinda overlooked imo
Hi Farya,
it would be nice if you can make your own interpretation from the greek song "the tango of Nefely - το τανγκο της νεφελης", i would realy like to hear your version!
best regrades
What an interesting melody.
Amazing!!! :D
Very soothing.
Sounio in Attica is my happy place . The view of the sea there is to die for. As it is from any place in Greece, but Sounio, and the temple of Poseidone... It must be a holly place.
Nice mixing of the Dorian and Lydian Chromatic modes!!! Excellent use of this seldom known historical instrument that was arguably the ancestor of many instruments of the same family, including the guitar. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Just beautiful, this makes me want to dance.
man the intro is giving me rebetiko vibes, love it.
Thank you Brother 🤌
I'm no music surgeon, but is this using some non-12 TET system (just intonation)?
The temperament here is a variant of Pythagorean, not Just, although the latter is also attested in Classical Times
Good musics and good job! Greetings from Turkiye🇹🇷🇹🇷❤❤
👌Peak ancient Greek reconstruction
Love it 👏
Amazing video brother❤ hail! 😊
nice
Nice❤
It is another great music Farya, but it's day 6 since I am asking for song about Scipio Africanus for my Roman Empire playlist. Greetings❤
You should do something about or like the scythians
My man Tzatzikis Protochlamydias is back with another banger!
allez hop, ajout à ma playlist pour accompagner ma lecture du moment : l'Iliade
Can you make carthagian music but language is not latin
If I find resources on the Phoenician language I certainly will
I can just imagine Farya being the commander of an ancient Persian army, fighting against Macedonians or something. I picture it now. Farya is reincarnated Darius confirmed???
Yo bro can you compose music on chatrapati shivaji maharaj
Niceee
greek compositors are taking lessons
could you make greek music based off the classical plays of euripides, aeschylus and sophocles?
Προχώρα ρε μάγκα!
ohh faryakos farajikos thiskos muchos goodos musicos!!!
This would make for a nice Space Rock tune (reminds me a bit of Nebula).
Can perfectly picture in my mind just a group of greek pirates sitting in a circle on their boat, sitting in some cove or on the for the moment calm waters, resting and waiting to pass the time with this tune. After all, if a piratical noble doesn't know how to play music, is he even literate?
Do you take request?
Because I think a rendition about the Nezahualcoyotl's poem : Niquitoa, made by you would be awesome.
Une musique de banquet ou de mariage
Tuyệt vời! Ước bạn làm một bản âm nhạc Việt Nam
We are going to get the persians with this one🔥🔥🔥
👍
Hi Farya - I'm wondering, do you perhaps read the comments? 🤔Because I have one question.
Will you ever do some Mughal music? Im quite curious to listen to your take on Music of the Mughals and how it was affected by the Indian culture.
Pandoura
Can you reconstruct Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian music? I know a UA-camr named Peter Pringle who succeds to reconstruct some musics
Peter Pringle doesn't make reconstructions of Mesopotamian music, he clarifies this in his own video descriptions.
I will however be making historically informed reconstructions once I procure the correct instruments
nice I like but not the waves of water
Perfect 🇦🇿👑💙
