Very different vibes, but both masterful.

agree: Arguably, with their previous Remain In Light album and tour, they were the best American rock band of the time. This remarkable film, two years later and tons of fun to watch, is a kind of summing up of a startling career. The film is a popular entry point to the band, sufficiently wonderful on it's own to satiate some, but intriguing enough to others to spur a richer dive back. Highly agree/recommended!

Lol "alt"...... sure sure..... that's why I saw them on the same bill as the Ramones, and Debby Harry........ cause, you know.... CBGB's was a well known "alt rock" venue
One of my favorite 80’s bands, with REM, The Cure… Every album has its own style. That was their early work. The Stop Making Sense movie is their peak moment.
I love the live version on "Stop Makings Sense" so much. 'Life During Wartime' is another absolute favorite, along with 'And She Was' and 'Nothing But Flowers'.
Also, the lyrics are different. Here the 2nd verse goes "I passed out hours ago", whereas the album version goes "You start a conversation you can't even finish". I hadn't heard this before, so I was surprised.
They led the New Wave music revolution from the late 70's to the 80's. They started at CBGB's in New York around the same time as "Blondie" Both had many charted songs. And the bass player that starts off the song is a chick! Tina Wemouthe, who started the all girl group, "The Tom Tom Club" They have a couple of great songs, "Wordy Rappinghood," and "Genius of Love". Would be great for a FEMALE FRIDAY!!!
Tom Tom Club isnt all Female..it was done with her husband and they had other male Musicians on their songs. That being said most of the lead vocals were all female..mostly by Tina and her sister.
Yep...i visited cbgb' s its a high end leather shop now unfortunately. Sucks the movie cbgb wasnt all it coulda been too.....great line tho,"- we're the talking heads, we live across the street." May not be factual....but great nonetheless!
Oh my, Talking Heads. Well, that's a portal into another universe - and it's full of music. 'Art school' bands are just amazing, so inventive, not afraid to experiment, and didn't shy away from going to places that other bands didn't or couldn't. They don't sound the same but Roxy Music, early Ultravox! with John Foxx (The Man Who Dies Every Day), the Rezillos (Destination Venus), and Gloria Mundi (Park Lane) are worth a spin. I saw them all live several times and each gig was a blow-away event. Listened to plenty but didn't get to see Talking Heads.
Listen to “Life During Wartime”. A classic Talking Heads tune. And, yes, David Byrne the lead vocalist is very creative and very theatrical. The man is a musical vanguard
Life During Wartime Live helps capture what this band 'felt' like to see live. Their shows were like no one else's. There was always an absurdist quality that came from Byrne's Asperger's. He really shows that that 'disorder' is really just a cool way of seeing the world.
What an absolute joy watching y'all discover this band and this song. The immediacy of your pleasure helps, I think, to remember what it was that I felt when I first heard the Talking Heads. I'd follow this song with "Life During Wartime." Keep the whacky vibe alive. There are a lot of really good songs in TH's repertoire, and everyone has their favorites ("there's a party in my mind, and I hope it never stops"), but I can't just listen to one song. For instance, if you listened in sequence to "The Big Country"-"Take Me to the River"-"Heaven"-"Memories Can't Wait", even now these years later, ("you may ask yourself") what was that I just listened to? Their music is not a commodity, listenable music, but, as someone commented, David Byrne injects an Absurdist element that, with the instrumentation, gives the music an edge, a difference, that little twist that niggles and stays with you. I never was fortunate to see them live, but the recordings, and, particularly Jonathan Demme's concert film of them Stop Makin' Sense, give some indication of what that would have been like. And they are fun. However, and I don't always think this about music, Byrne's lyrics are integral to the songs. So, "Life During Wartime", "Burning Down the House", "Once in a Lifetime", these would be great for reactions. (I don't think you could go wrong with any song of theirs; I even like "Don't Worry About the Government.")
They are considered new wave. It a sound in the 80’s which is a cross between punk and rock and pop and really falls into a category of its own. Like the B52’s and Devo and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. So much fun
listening to this track, the word 'devo' popped into my head, but i didn't know why - i can't get no satisfaction by devo, i'm sure you two lovely people will be delighted by it
Amber you don't even know how much you NAILED IT when you said the lead singer was "theateical"! David Byrne, the Head's lead singer was an art major in college when he formed the band, and his performances are VERY artistic and theatrical! With those kinds of instincts, you should be playing the lottery!
The Talking Heads have showmanship plus groovy beats. They try to grab your eyes, your ears, and your mind. They had several hits, and they don't all sound like this, but they are interesting. Please cover "Burning Down the House," "Life During Wartime," "Slippery People," "Once in a Lifetime," and several more. :)
So glad you enjoyed this so much. These were definitive for youth in the late 70's and early 80's, perhaps a reaction to disco (which btw I love!) I was born in 78 so certainly didn't hear this when it appeared. But I can't imagine a world without it. It rocks.
Every song on "Stop Making Sense" is the best song they ever recorded (Especially "Life During Wartime"). Such an amazing film. A concert film directed by Jonathan Demme.("Silence of the Lambs", and others)
Don't miss the live versions of Life During Wartime and Burning Down the House (both from Stop Making Sense) with their expanded band line up - it's insane just how talented they were!
This is one of the most unique and talented bands in history. If you want to see then at their most powerful, check out the live version of "Life During Wartime" from the concert film Stop Making Sense. It's amazing.
"Burning Down The House" I've karaoked to. "Once In A Life Time" "Take Me To The River" "Road To Nowhere" (from Little Monsters soundtrack), "Wild Wild Life", "And She Was" are some of their greatest hits. Tina Weymouth is so good on the guitar. She was in the band Tom Tom Club and was known for the song "Genius Of Love" which Mariah Carey has sampled.
I love this reaction, you guys took it as it's supposed to be understood, as a creative, weird, fun, good song with good music! I've seen other reactors take it really literally and not have fun with it at all. It's a huge hit for a reason!
I can’t WAIT until you guys watch the movie “Stop Making Sense”! You’ll see just how theatrical they are - incredible concert movie! It opens with this song, just David Byrne, a guitar and a boom box. Another one you HAVE TO DO is “Life During Wartime”, the live video from the movie, one of the rare times I would ever recommend a live version over the studio release.
The Film "Stop Making Sense" is the best concert film of all time (directed by the the guy who made Silence of the Lambs). There's so many great songs on there you could react to every one
Now that you have opened Pandora's box, you MUST react to Talking Heads' live version of Life During Wartime. The energy (and the band's cardio) will blow you away. You will absolutely love it. They are unique.
These guys are hard to classify, but you can accurately say, "Alternative Rock" They are unique, have a unique sound, unique vocals, sort of a punkish vibe but not quite punk rock. They are simply "The Talking Heads" and their songs are not trying to be like anything else. They thrive on being themselves, and definitly not the norm. So their songs have an honesty to them and are fun to listen to, even the first time, and up to the last time, because they talk to you on a level you can relate to both musically and lyrically. Databyter
And he's still going strong! He had a special on HBO just recently and it was a banger! His "band" is just as crazy as he is. Plus...they all perform barefoot. You nailed it by saying it's performance art! 👍👍👍❤
David Byrne is the lead singer, a genius artist. Talking Heads is one of the most interesting and unique 'New Wave' Groups. You have to watch a live concert of this fantastic band. Amazing.
The lead singer, David Byrne, just won a Tony award! He did an amazing live show on Broadway with a bunch of musicians, and all of them DANCED! It was so cool.
David Byrne's crazy psycho voice is wild. It's so neat watching someone hearing it for the first time. A 70's New Wave classic! This must be an early live version because the lyrics are different from the official single you hear on the radio. "New wave" was a reaction to all the big rock bands and laid back bands. New wave had a much harder edge.
First time i heard it was on the Old Grey Whistle Test .. just blown away . Never heard this version before , diffrent lyrics but still very very good .. Grest choice guys
@@stanfieldforsythe6398 OGWT - what television was invented for. Some really stunning performances in the archives. Add the Peel Sessions and Beat Club (Bremen) and you've got a ton of decent music right there.
@@PedroConejo1939 there was also a programme in the UK called Something Else .. and another one based in Manchester but i cant remember what it was called. But the OGWT was the must see show for ys teenage punks back in the day . And John Peel was a never miss .. great days
Long time "Heads" fan here - they're strangely unique with talent that just draws you in. But I wanna talk about you guys.. I just love you both. Younger people like you give me some kind of hope for a better future. You are both so genuine, open & kind. The type of people you want to have around you but they're so hard to find. It seems no matter what sound you're exposed to, you appreciate what you here, or at least don't judge it. True music appreciaters, and I thank you for that. Remember life without music would b-flat. Music is what feelings sound like. I just love you guys.
Allthe music that could have possibly been composed was done was finished by late mid to late 70's.after that you got a conglomeration from disco, to punk to new way.a lot of interesting and crazy stuff came aout.the 90's brought grunge. And as bubba said when he was discussing with Forrest gump in the movie, all the ways you can serve shrimp.that was about it.
Talking Heads were just so good! "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town" is one of my personal favorites, but they did so much great stuff. Tina Weymouth, the bass player, really drives this band, although lead singer David Byrne gets a lot of the attention. I'll echo those who recommended the DVD "Stop Making Sense." It'll blow your minds.
Talking heads are the BOMB!!!!! YOU HAVE TO SEE A LIVE PERFORMANCE. Anything from the stop making sense video. It is crazy. Try Life during wartime , take me to the river.... ✌❤
Talking Heads gotta be the best band of their decade. If you wanna spoil yourselves, watch the "Stop Making Sense" video in full, the stage set up, the energy, the songs, the quirkiness, the musicians, all make this a masterful concert. I just know you will love it.
The live versions of "Girlfriend Is Better" and Once in a Lifetime" from the film "Stop Making Sense" are absolute musts, especially to see the lead singer David Byrne on stage...As for what genre this represents, this is very nearly the birth of New Wave...
Youve entered a new world here. Talking Heads along with DEVO opened up popular music to a beautiful amalgam of art school performance pieces and great songwriting.
You'd be blown away by the "Stop Making Sense" concert/movie. If you do more songs, you may want to react to the version(s) from that concert. Very high energy.
David Byrne is a wild man. You have to react to them doing "Life During Wartime", live in Los Angeles 1983. You'll get to see how energetic the whole band is. It's really impressive!
Hey Jay and Amber...loved your reaction to your first Talking Heads video! They are a truly unique band. The lead singer David Byrne is always a mesmerizing and unsettling presence...but with a band as groove and rhythm led as they are, it just works. Your next TH video HAS to be "Once In a Lifetime"....make sure you watch the official video, coz it's soooooo weird!!! Lovin' your work . keep it up!!
Genres: New wave, Art rock, Alternative/Indie, Art Pop, Funk rock, No wave, Pop, Rock: That's what was so wild about the late 70's - 80's there was such diversity it was hard to classify a lot of the music coming out back then, & these guys are a prime example, there was no mold you could fit them in.
Now we're talkin'!!! These guys are fantastic! And I will say, you should WATCH them, not just listen to them, that's part of the appeal. David Byrne is something to see.
Talking Heads are so unique, the music industry coined a new term just to describe them... New Wave. Yes, you should see them live in their fabulous concert film, Stop Making Sense.
Probably the best band of all time. So good I even had one of their songs (Naive Melody) as my opening dance when we got married 33 years ago. Stop making sense was the gig that every band since have been trying to emulate. Definitely watch the live version of Life During Wartime. Keep up the good work guy's sending you love from the UK
You picked the best version of the song, IMO - it's a rare mix of an alternate take, not the same as the original album. Quite a treat. Next up, try Burnin' Down the House or Life During Wartime. And if you want to see a movie, their concert film "Stop Making Sense" is absolutely phenomenal. (And it's directed by Oscar winner Jonathan Demme).
This is the best intro to this band you could have gotten! Bandleader David Byrne envisioned Talking Heads as a kind of counterpoint to the big, loud, gnarly guitars of the 80's; the music is intentionally stripped down and more sparse. If you want to see the band live, they gave us one of the great concert movies of all time, "Stop Making Sense." Next Stops: "Once in a Lifetime" "Burning Down the House" "Nothing But Flowers" And, for Female Friday: Tom Tom Club, "Genius of Love." Tom Tom Club's lead singer is Tina Weymouth; she is Talking Heads' bass player.
I haven't heard a live version yet that does justice to Tina Weymouths bass line. But they have a concert film called Stop Making Sense that is awesome. Bernie Worrell from P-Funk comes in about 3 or 4 songs in. The show starts with the lead singer an acoustic guitar and a boom box. They add a person or 2 with each song.
I love this band. So good. No two songs are the same. There is a whole concert film from the Heads called Stop Making Sense. David Byrne is a showman. Don't forget Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London.
Talking heads - Wild wild life is the absolute best. I had this album in 80s and it's awesome. They are their own vibe. So many other great songs by them.
Oh my goodness it's clear to me that Amber and Jay would LOVE "Stop Making Sense!" They should just watch the whole thing, they don't even need to react to it. But that'd be cool if they did!
I saw them live back in college when they were first hitting it. Wow wow wow. Burning Down the HOuse, Once in a LIfetime, Take Me to the River... classics.
David Byrne is only one part of Talking Heads, they would be nothing without their driving force of Tina and Chris's rhythm section and Jerry's keyboard and guitars. Chris Frantz's autobiography "Remain in love" is an absolutely enthralling read; they have had the most amazing musical career.
Couldn't agree more. Frantz' book really brings to light how misguided the David Byrne cult-of-personality can be and reiterates my belief that Remain In Light, and the subsequent tour, were their artistic masterpieces, even if Stop Making Sense is more accessible (and still phenomenal fun).
So so so so many Talking Heads to recommend. One of my all-time favorite bands. Each album subsequently became more diverse and layered than the previous, which they even visually indicated throughout one of the greatest concert films of all time: Stop Making Sense. I think Amber will really like "This Must Be the Place." Their most famous songs are probably "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down the House." "And She Was" is one of my all-time favorite songs. They re-invented Al Green's "Take Me to the River." "Wild Wild Life," "Slippery People," "Life During Wartime" I mean, the list seems never-ending.
I am SO happy you guys finally got into Talking Heads! Like everyone else is saying, you really can't go wrong with them and Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest concerts ever filmed.
Amber I really like how ur getting so much more comfortable in ur videos and expressive you are. Jai every time I see u I remember being a kid and seeing my best friend who was just like you. Happy go lucky and so positive
I've never heard the demo version that's great - different lyrics from the album version. Rhythm section is also slightly more manic. 77 is a super album dive in!
It’s amazing how they were able to guess exactly how he dances just by hearing him perform. You really can tell that he’s “spazzing out” in the best way possible.
You can characterize Talking Heads as one of the early New Wave bands of the ‘70s. You will thank yourselves forever for watching any of their live performances from Stop Making Sense. There is no one else like them. Greatness.
J&A, You'll love their "Life During Wartime", "Take Me To The River", "Once In A Lifetime", "Crosseyed And Painless" and many more. Tina Weymouth learned to play bass watching Suzi Quatro videos. They started in the 1970's and are very creative. This is not the best version of the song.
“Burning Down the House” “And She Was” “Once in a Lifetime” “Take Me to the River” and “This Must Be the Place” are absolute musts by The Talking Heads!!

Using just bare lightbulb and shadows as lighting effects.....one if the best I've been to! So many layers to their songs.
I was there! I still have the scar😆
@@TimothySmiths is right
Talking Heads are post-punk as are Blondie or the Clash. New Wave is like Duran Duran.
Some refer to this genre as Funk Punk.
You MUST watch Stop Making Sense - a live performance of all their hits. It’s fire.
Listen to “Life During Wartime”. A classic Talking Heads tune. And, yes, David Byrne the lead vocalist is very creative and very theatrical. The man is a musical vanguard
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime LIVE Los Angeles '83
Don’t just listen to it! Watch the video for this song from the Stop Making Sense concert film. They have to be seen to be truly appreciated. ❤️🔥
Yes, Yes, and Yes!!! The LIVE Concert version of LIFE DURING WARTIME is the best!!
So much fun
listening to this track, the word 'devo' popped into my head, but i didn't know why - i can't get no satisfaction by devo, i'm sure you two lovely people will be delighted by it
The Talking Heads are definitely a can't-go-wrong group. And as others have said, their concert film Stop Making Sense is a masterpiece.
Amber you don't even know how much you NAILED IT when you said the lead singer was "theateical"! David Byrne, the Head's lead singer was an art major in college when he formed the band, and his performances are VERY artistic and theatrical! With those kinds of instincts, you should be playing the lottery!
Byrne just won a Tony award for a very theatrical performance on Broadway!!!
@@jscho8674 Byrne is a true renaissance man! He writes, he's done films, and of course, is a stellar musician!
@@TrashWerewolf Yes, he sure is!!!! He is amazing!!!
From a long time fan I must admit amber absolutely got David Byrne spot on, theatrical, losing it etc etc, best first time reaction of talking heads 😁
They had a real hard time classifying Byrne's sound. Their concerts were like living art at times. 'Burning down the house.....'
The Great Curve
So glad you enjoyed this so much. These were definitive for youth in the late 70's and early 80's, perhaps a reaction to disco (which btw I love!) I was born in 78 so certainly didn't hear this when it appeared. But I can't imagine a world without it. It rocks.
Absolutely one of my favourite bands. Please listen to once in a lifetime
YES!!!!!!
and Girlfriend is better
This is one of the most unique and talented bands in history. If you want to see then at their most powerful, check out the live version of "Life During Wartime" from the concert film Stop Making Sense. It's amazing.
You need to watch their live concert Stop Making Sense. Absolutely amazing performance.
Talking Heads were one of the first "alternative rock" bands. Take me to The River and Burning Down the House are my faves!
Life During Wartime ,live concert is great full of energy. The talking heads were one of the most fun times at a concert you could have
First time hearing this was on the radio, in the late 70's, on the Dr. Dememto Show, Sunday nights. Big fan.
Live version of this song is the bomb. you guys have very positive energy.
I’d give you a double thumbs up if I could. One of the greatest live works ever.
Love that vid.
Yeeeees
MY FAVORITE!!!!
This
These guys are hard to classify, but you can accurately say, "Alternative Rock" They are unique, have a unique sound, unique vocals, sort of a punkish vibe but not quite punk rock. Databyter
If I recall the story correctly, Alternative Rock was a name the Heads' manager came up with as a way to put a name to their style of music.
They are They're Own Genre...but Alternative Rock with Punk influences!
They were early ProgRock
@@trevorsongary3431 Yeah, for sure. That is accurate.
Amazing.
Post-Punk*
Actual punk they came out of CBGB
@@jeffreyflynn9106 so did Blondie, The Police, The B-52s...
The lead singer, David Byrne, just won a Tony award! He did an amazing live show on Broadway with a bunch of musicians, and all of them DANCED! It was so cool.
You can see the show on HBO. It's called American Utopia.
YES! Byrne is one of those artists that are experimental and music historians like David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Kate Bush.
I was excited to see their reaction but this isn't the one I'm used to hearing.. I like it but wasn't expecting that at all lol
It's a demo version, I think.
And John Peel was a never miss .. great days
I love this band! They are theatric, artistic, poetic, and great musicians wrapped into one band.
David Byrne, lead singer has had a musical play running in nyc.on and off for years.
The bass player, Tina Weymouth, was also in the Tom Tom Club, and played the iconic bass line in their song Genius Of Love. Definitely worth a listen.
David Byrne is one of the most unique people in music. And like you said he is quite theatrical and storytelling
One genre you haven't reacted much to is alternative. You need to explore Depeche Mode, The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, etc.
Depeche Mode. Walking in my Shoes, People are People, Stripped, Somebody. (Different choices from the usual)
One Caress!
David Byrne is a unique performer... check out Wild, wild life, and burning down the house
Dig it!
Their song “life during wartime” is a must hear, and the live version is a must watch.
Definitely a band to be seen and not just heard. 💜
They are considered new wave with touches of punk rock. This band is so crazy cool.
Thanks can you please let me know the version? It’s great.
Saw the Stop Making Sense tour in 1983.
Hands down, best live show ever !!!!!
I would also add 'Swamp' to the list.
I noticed it is slightly different in this version, in the version I know he doesn't talk about closing his eyes on a sunny day, I'm certain.
This is the best intro to this band you could have gotten! Bandleader David Byrne envisioned Talking Heads as a kind of counterpoint to the big, loud, gnarly guitars of the 80's; the music is intentionally stripped down and more sparse. If you want to see the band live, they gave us one of the great concert movies of all time, "Stop Making Sense."
Next Stops:
"Once in a Lifetime"
"Burning Down the House"
"Nothing But Flowers"
And, for Female Friday: Tom Tom Club, "Genius of Love." Tom Tom Club's lead singer is Tina Weymouth; she is Talking Heads' bass player.
Lead singer is David Byrne. The band was put into the New Wave genre.
More from them to check out: Once In a Lifetime and Burning Down the House.
you guys have to watch them live also. the lead singer moves so crazy and weird it is great. i love this group. the guy on the left is the lead singer
I love this band. So good. No two songs are the same. There is a whole concert film from the Heads called Stop Making Sense. David Byrne is a showman. Don't forget Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London.
Please, by all that is holy, do Talking Heads 'Once In A Lifetime", the official video version. It will blow you AWAY!
The talking heads are an amazing live band. Check out their live performances. The movie Stop Making Sense is a must. I also love all your reactions!
I saw them live back in college when they were first hitting it. Wow wow wow. Burning Down the HOuse, Once in a LIfetime, Take Me to the River... classics.
Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place) is my favorite song...not just by them, by anyone.
Mine too, especially the live version from "Stop Making Sense".
Me too!
For Halloween, "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon.
Or his "Excitable Boy" in the vein of "Psycho Killer"
Lil Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.
Oingo Boingo- Dead Mans Party
Not for Halloween, but Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns, and Money” is really great
Oooh. I like the idea of Warren Zevon. "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" would also be a great Halloween tune.
Tom Tom Club is something they should also react to.
Talking Heads- a fave for a decade. There’s a wide open catalog many of which is produced by the great Brian Eno
Suzi is a gem.
Take me to the river is a great cover by them. Love it
Wow, Tina Learned how to play bass by watching Suzie Q! Never new that.
@@d-2793 I think Tina was one of the best bass players of that era. I learned a lot of bass by watching and listening to HER!🎸

"Buring Down the House" and "Life During Wartime", two essential TH songs

It's the best. There are many close, but none better.
“Burning Down the House” “And She Was” “Once in a Lifetime” “Take Me to the River” and “This Must Be the Place” are absolute musts by The Talking Heads!!
