Megadeth is my favorite band of all time, but Anthrax has always been so consistent. And, out of all the thrash bands, there is no one that has more energy and more fun on stage. They always sound tight. They make strong albums and the last two is some of the best material they've ever written. Don't ever let anyone say they don't deserve a spot in the Big 4. No one is like Anthrax. As a native NYer (Bronx), I always have a soft spot for my hometown boys. Long Live Anthrax.
Anthrax were easily the tightest, most consistent group of the Big 4 (especially live). Metallica were always sloppy live, Megadeth were hit-or-miss (great shows, not so great shows), Slayer were up there, but Anthrax were a lethal, well-oiled metal machine. Each band brings something to the table, but Anthrax always had the best band dynamics. Their timing is scary perfect.
@@jamesmeeker6933 For sure. I've seen Megadeth 22 times since 88, including with Anthrax. Seen Slayer and Metallica obviously a bunch of times too. But, Anthrax is my favorite live act. They are heavy. They are tight. They have great songs. I never stopped buying their albums, so of course I bought this when it came out. And I use to call the radio station in NY to request 'Inside Out' all the time. Very underrated album with a bunch of hidden gems. Stealing from a Thief, Catharsis, Crush, Harms Way, Pieces. It’s a shame the distribution wasn’t there.
I'm giving it another listen right now for the first time in decades and I'm just not feeling it. The first four songs are good, not classic Anthrax but good, then the album just plunges into completely forgettable trash songs, 5 songs in a row are just boring, now I'm up to "Hog Tied" and this is alright....but its still not an exciting song. They just sound lost in 1998.

Easily my favorite Anthrax record. I played this album for years when it came out. Crush, Harm's Way, Big Fat, Catharsis, Inside Out. So many killer songs.
"Inside Out" is heavy as fuck! That song kind of has an "Only" feel during the chorus. That song will always be my absolute favorite song off of Volume 8.

I am very proud of the drum sound we captured, thank you. For clarity... Not sure if you are generalizing the DIME solo comment... Charlie is playing the solo on CATHARSIS. Fun trivia... Dime submitted his solo for INSIDE OUT. Charlie didn't like it. He called DIME and asked him to change it up. Dime wasn't all that pleased but wanted Charlie to be happy. The solo you are hearing was his second submission.
Hi @@PaulCrookMusic thank you for the reply. Yes I was referring to Dime's solo on Inside out. It is magic. I'm glad Charlie asked him to redo it. I love that "whaling" sound he does in the beginning of the solo. He was a true master. You and the team really did a great job with the sound. You guys are out there playing music and making it happen, while I'm here giving my insignificant opinion... Thank you
This album brings back bittersweet memories for me. I had been living in Mesa, AZ for 4 years at the time, and the first years or so, the heavy music scene in the Phoenix/Tempe area was great, but then it began going steadily downhill in 1996 and by the time Volume 8 came out, everything had pretty much gone to shit and pop punk and ska had taken over both locally and nationally. And personally, I was going through a major depression over a girl I was in love with who rejected me and over my band falling apart. I was also going through an existential crisis thinking about the meaning of life, religion and all kinds of heavy shit like that. I remember sitting on my porch blasting this album, thinking about life and reminiscing about the early 90's. Even though it was only a few years prior, so much had changed for the worse.
I remember this album coming out... and I remember reading about it coming out in Modern Drummer of all places... got the album... and I loved it. Still do to this day.
Saw Anthrax on the Volume 8 tour, twice, at the Birch Hill Night Club in Old Bridge, NJ, now defunct. Two of the best shows I ever saw. Bush KILLED IT live.............
As for Stomp 442 and Volume 8, it's fun to hear from the band members words something like "This album should never be forgotten" or "there are songs on the album that I'm proud of", and yet to witness that since Belladonna came back, the band only makes empty phrases out of these words...
There is not a single album I have ever owned that was played more than Volume 8. It spoke to me in a lousy point in my life. Thank you Anthrax and John!
I know the history of the band during the 90's/00's but if you are a music fan, every album from Sound of white noise with Bush just carried that incredible energy where my benchmark is if an album sounds incredible and then the band tours it and just takes it to another level where you go into the album with a crowd who have all been through the good and bad days, then this is one of the most undersold classics in music. Sound of White Noise tour in the UK was to same sized arenas but a fraction of the crowd but the boys just played a blinder live and the balls on Bush's voice just made live gigs exciting again. Stomp 442 album and tour was even more potet and thanks to word of mouth of fans just needing a good time gig, same venues but more heads and buzz, with a new generation of metal fans loving the big energy, Volume 8 album and tour just confirmed how damn good this band is live as the album/live experience was totally blurred. Even as a support act (which many times I've seen Anthrax live) they just raised the bar for the headline act to pull their balls out of their ass or be destroyed. Just loved the new tone and drive Bush's voice added to the bands roots. Can't work ut if they toured in the UK as support with Motorhead but it was one of the best, balls out best gigs I've witnessed for being in a crowd thinking that this could of been the best gig to have at the end of the world. Big love to this era of Anthrax.
Least favorite Anthrax album, but there are some really good songs. Lots of respect to the band for sticking it out and treading through the no fun 90s!
LOVE Volume 8 and still play the hell out it. This record should have been as huge as Pantera's releases at the time... just chock full of brutal grooves and excitement and fun from beginning to end.
This is such a great record. I remember cruising to my record store after school one day and being like, “Wait, Anthrax has a new one?” I bought it and have never stopped listening to it. One of their most solid records, and people who say otherwise have not listened to it . Hard, heavy, aggressive, killer lyrics, goofy at times, truly an Anthrax record in that it does so much. I’m blessed I got to see them with Pantera in ‘97 in El Paso, but bummed I missed any Vol 8 tour because I’d love to hear every single song on this record live. Easily in their top 5 best.
I love this album. I wore it out with my friend in our senior year of High School. I remember seeing the video on Headbangers ball the new version. Inside out the twilight zone type video. It was awesome. It is without a doubt the most underrated album they have ever made. The riffs and Bush’s singing on the album were killer.
That hidden track is one of my favorite songs. Note I didn't say "Anthrax songs". I didn't know it was about Frank's brother, but that song always hit me, and now I know the story behind it. I love this documentary and since I started watching it I have been listening to Anthrax every day with a different sense of appreciation.
The band was really kicking when I saw them live in cologne. I remember they played an AC DC ( walk all over you) cover and Scott was sooo on fire playing that 😄🤘🏼 Great concert!
I’m gonna say that this record is surprising me. I listened to this two nights ago, and side B is much stronger than I remember. Just goes to show that there really are no clunkers!
Among remains my favorite of all time..... I still remember the day it arrived in my record store and I took it to a party of thrash heads and it was played non-stop for the entire weekend. .......BUT in the whole Anthrax catalog ... if I had to pick a 2nd favorite, it would be difficult to pick just one..... but Volume 8 would be one of them. Great album!!! Still holds up to this day.
I stumbled onto Vol. 8 around Christmas time of 1999. I found it at a record store and thought "huh, Anthrax have a new album out." Being a die hard fan I, of course, bought it. After one listen, it blew me away. It's still one of my favorites that I listen to probablhy once a month. After hearing the band talk about label problems, it sounds like I was lucky to find and own a physical copy. My hope is that all these UA-cam clips are pieced together for a DVD or at least played the whole way through before the show next month.
I love this album! I think I first heard about it on the old Rock 103.5 in Chicago around the time the album was released. I bought it right away, and played it non stop for some time.
1998... that video from Inside Out man... I watched that uncountable times!!!!!! AMAZING that my favorite band of all time mixed with my favorite tv show ever!
Volume 8 was the first Bush era record that connected with me. This series has given me a new appreciation for this era of the band and Anthrax has been and will always be one of my favorite groups ever. Much love to you all
At the time Vol. 8 came out, I wasn't really into it. Didn't sound like the Anthrax I expected. Now that I'm older, I appreciate it even more because it didn't sound like the Anthrax I expected.
I'm so glad that I got this album. For me it gave Anthrax a jump start and a fresh look at the world. Dime gave this album a really nice touch. And John's vocal is so golden
Fell for Anthrax in my mid-teens, '86-'87; (they were always my no. 1 as far as the big four were concerned) but the sound and the songs from the Bush era will always be my favourite. Loving the walk through memory lane. Getting to hear new stories and old. Keep cranking out the videos and tunes! Can't wait for the next vid, WCFYA. If I was forced to only have access to one Anthrax album for the remainder of my life, it would be that one. Hx
These are the nicest guys, man. Paul (! not John) Crook is such a lovable, kinda nerdy character. He and John Bush were *part of the band*, but they talk about Anthrax as if actually they were something like their biggest fans. I love it.
You mean Paul Crook? I always dug that guy on stage. I don't know why they didn't make him an official member and put him in the band photos. I liked him a lot better than Beanie Boy that came after him.
@@HabAnagarek I remember that too. But he's a super nice guy, so he's not gonna say that now. John Bush has said he wants Paul Crook involved if he ever puts together a band to go play Anthrax songs from his era for a special tour. Paul went on to have success with Meatloaf as well. So good for him!
Wow... Thank you for the kind words, guys!!! I haven't ever made a negative comment about ANTHRAX or Rob. That would be ridiculous... I consider Rob a friend and his family beautiful. I worked with Rob and his band BOILER ROOM years before he joined ANTHRAX. BUSH-THRAX... Yes, John and I have spoken about this on a few separate occasions. I hope it happens. Thanks again, guys!!!
@@PaulCrookMusic Dude! Your work with Anthrax has always been underrated, and you should have been made an official member (you were in my book). I'm so glad there's nothing but love between you and them!
Volume 8 is such a great record.......one of their best IMO. Such a shame the label folded and physical copies of it disappeared shortly after. I think Scott mentioned in his book that they tried to buy the music years ago from the label so they could re-release it and got nowhere. Glad it’s available on Spotify so people who missed it when it first dropped can hear it
My favorite Anthrax record - i listened to it again and again from 98/99 to when WCFYA came out in '04. Hell, i still put it on frequently. Absolutely love this one back to back. And the Dime stuff - hidden gems man. It was absent from streaming for a number of years, so when everyone ditched their CDs i kept my old ipod around - just for this album. Thank you for making it.
Volume 8 is my favorite of the Bush years and has some of my absolute favorite songs of theirs. Crush, Catharsis, Big Fat and Pieces are classics. I got to see them that summer or fall and it was one of my top 5 concerts ever. Obviously the crowd was a bit smaller but they played as if 70,000 people were cheering them on. While I'd love to see them play Catharsis in current times, I'm not sure Joey's voice is meant for it. Hey John Bush, please come do a special encore next time I get to see Anthrax!
I remember buying Volume 8 along with Social D Live at the Roxy ( and I'm fairly certain the first Grand Theft Auto game), what a great day of music. And both are still in regular rotation. Killing Box and that great double kick....love it!
I was all aboard the John Bush train with Anthrax and had no idea they had an album coming out until I randomly spotted it in a local record store. Crush is a god damn world beater. Easily one of their greatest songs of all time.
Gotta say it; Frank seems to be the most down to earth man ever. Much love to all the guys, (and that goes without saying!!!), but if I could only hang with ONE guy from the band all day, I’d definitely pick Frank without question!
I bought Volume 8!!! On cassette lol. And true story: found a box of mix tapes I used to make and that cassette was in there! I thought all my tapes were gone. Somehow the mix tapes and Volume 8 survived!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, PROJECT 9!!! SUCH A NICE THING TO SAY!!! Paul Mallon... how do you really feel about me??? HAHAHAH!!! That said... I totally understand your ACTING/ SCRIPT comment. I have a difficult time speaking. I went through extensive speech therapy in grammar school. It obviously didn't help... I do not understand your SPINAL TAP comment. First of all love these videos, I’ve learned so much about the band. Volume 8 is a very underrated album. I was lucky, there was an ad for the album on the back of a comic book. Otherwise I probably would not have known it was out. Always liked the extra track, I didn’t know it’s name or what it was about until this video. Even more powerful knowing the story.

Stomp 442 album and tour was even more potet and thanks to word of mouth of fans just needing a good time gig, same venues but more heads and buzz, with a new generation of metal fans loving the big energy,
Volume 8 album and tour just confirmed how damn good this band is live as the album/live experience was totally blurred.
Man, I frikkin’ Love Catharsis. That is SUCH an awesome song. One of my favourite Anthrax songs 🤘🏼
one of my fav albums - so underrated
Man, I could watch this everyday of the week, every month of the year.
Least favorite Anthrax album, but there are some really good songs. Lots of respect to the band for sticking it out and treading through the no fun 90s!
I killed my relationship with this record! No regrets!!! 🤘👺🤘
Volume 8 Rules!
Love Paul Crook. He seems so sweet and humble.
LOVE Volume 8 and still play the hell out it. This record should have been as huge as Pantera's releases at the time... just chock full of brutal grooves and excitement and fun from beginning to end.
These episodes are so great! I don't want them to end!
I saw Anthrax on this tour in Chicago at house of blues. Paul Crook played lead guitar for the show. It’s was so good. I got Charlie’s stick as well.
Holy hell do i love that album. Alpha male is an absolute killer track.
I was an 80s/90s Anthrax guy and seeing and hearing songs from this era is all new to me - it’s like a voyage of discovery
I love All The Bush era albums. This is no exception. Blasting it in the car today, still great.
I remember buying Volume 8 from Harmony House. They actually had a metal section in their store.
The band was really kicking when I saw them live in cologne.
I remember they played an AC DC ( walk all over you) cover and Scott was sooo on fire playing that 😄🤘🏼
Great concert!
Great series! Glad they are giving Pantera the recognition for working with them in the late 90’s.
"Catharsis" - easily amongst the best metal songs ever written!
I"m so glad I'm not alone in thinking this is just one phenomenal song.
This song is my anthem. Live this song every day
I like this record a lot, and i truly believe Anthrax made the best albums in the turn of the millenium, compared to the other big 3 of trash.
I fuckin love Volume 8. Thrashed it so much when it came out. Great memories.
I love this album! I think I first heard about it on the old Rock 103.5 in Chicago around the time the album was released. I bought it right away, and played it non stop for some time.
Awesome episode, i wish these were on daily! I absolutely love Paul Crooks Eddie Van Halen guitar collection at 9:46 , so fuckin cool
Toast to the extras is one of the best anthrax songs ever
Can't tell if serious or trolling...lol
I assure you I'm serious...I've always enjoyed that song
I love this album. Have been a fan since 88 and loved the Bush era. There is just something so unique about this album. Every song is great.
1998... that video from Inside Out man... I watched that uncountable times!!!!!! AMAZING that my favorite band of all time mixed with my favorite tv show ever!
Volume 8 is my favourite Anthrax album. Giving the Horns on the re-releases is probably the greatest B-side ever!
Paul Crook is the man. Love this guy.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! VERY KIND!!!
@@taskmaster65 That would be awesome.
@@taskmaster65 Yes, *Paul* Crook, dont know why I typed "John" initially.
Huge props for giving Paul Crook so much love in this. He's always deserved it, but never got his due.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have no ill feelings. Everything worked out for the better for all of us.
Great video! Just bought Vol. 8 on cd recently. Love this album!
What a great saga this is. From Spreading to Fueled...... Please don't stop.
One of my favorite albums. Great to listen to when it's 3am and you have 4 more hours to go.
Keep on trucking.
Vol 8is my third loving Anthrax album...
Decent album. Catharsis is so good. 🔥
Anthrax/Basket Full of Puppies Tour 2022! Let's make this happen!
Belladonna Anthrax headlines, Bush Anthrax opens!
It's a crime how ridiculously underrated the Bush era albums are. They're the ones I listen to the most.
I LOVED volume 8!!!!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Gotta say it; Frank seems to be the most down to earth man ever. Much love to all the guys, (and that goes without saying!!!), but if I could only hang with ONE guy from the band all day, I’d definitely pick Frank without question!
Bass guitar hero of mine
One of Bello's greatest attributes is his honesty.
I bought Volume 8!!! On cassette lol. And true story: found a box of mix tapes I used to make and that cassette was in there! I thought all my tapes were gone. Somehow the mix tapes and Volume 8 survived!
Love this album. I was lucky enough to find the re-release with bonus tracks.
Paul Crook seems a class act.
That is simply mean-spirited on your part. All I'm doing is standing in my guitar room, answering guitar related questions. Funny, I thought viewers would enjoy seeing something cool in the background (nothing cooler than guitars, in my opinion). I'll be sure to answer future questions in a darkened room or against a white colored wall for you as I await your judgment of me with bated breath.
@@paulmallon9292 To which comment are you referring, mine or your's?
@@paulmallon9292 Forget about it? I don't understand... you post a negative comment about me. I respond to it and you come off like I'm the one that started this. It's all on you.
@@paulmallon9292 I don't understand...
@@paulmallon9292 That's bullshit!!! Funny... a couple of mine were deleted. I thought it was the internet acting up... WTF? Saying this, I'm totally enjoying my conversation with you. I think it great to be to do this. The internet wasn't around when I was working with ANTHRAX. This is giving me the time to connect with everyone.
Scott please!!!! One more John tour/ Album
Layers of feeling. Metal is truly the music of life. Thanks guys :)
Volume 8 is my favorite and the best Bush Era album. Crush is a monster of a track. Pieces hits hard beautifully.
I love this album. FAVS: Harms Way and Stealing From a Thief
Indeed
Harms way is so cool
Vol 8 has some of Anthrax’s best songs
What a fantastic series, this has been.
