Yeah, running in a straight line is dead simple with the classic controls! They must be referring to making adjustments if you’re not already lined up with the bridge, which can be tricky lol
I basically grew up playing TR 1-5 and pretty much only on keyboard. I still to this day cannot get the hang of anything that requires right thumb steering/camera, but I can blitz the tank controls on keyboard through muscle memory. I am so glad they remastered this, for the nostalgia and the itch I need to scratch of being in actual tombs (definitely missing in the reboot). These games inspired my to study archaeology, so the move to a cover shooter was disappointing (though I did enjoy the reboots too). I also found the mapped buttons on controller really odd choices in the remaster.
If they gave you a quick toggle for the controls, instead of having to go into the settings menu, that would be amazing since the games were originally built with the tank controls in mind for the grid-based level design, allowing for precise maneuvers, but the modern controls probably feel much more comfortable for combat.
I remember spending sooo much time in Croft Manor, and the first thing I would always do when booting up was lock the butler in the freezer (like everyone ever). But I guess I had a guilty conscience, because I still vividly remember having a nightmare over 20 years ago where I was running around the attic in Croft Manor, when Winston suddenly pulled a shotgun out of his coat and blew me away.
In on the personal channel for Ian from Eurogamer, he said that to move backwards in the modern controls, you have to take out Laura's guns for her to take a step backwards.
love the sass coming from Jane towards Andy's modern control run also where is the bonus footage of the butler being locked in the fridge, i believe it's the law to always do that in tomb raider 2
Having watched Ian play through a bit of each of the three games on his channel I have increased respect for his patience! It’s very frustrating that the remasters don’t explain the modern controls. And that they’re really not good. Hopefully anyone trying these classics for the first time won’t be put off by them.
Im near the end of tomb raider one and have used modern conteols the entire time. My only gripe os when you have the graphics set to modern, the camera goes haywire in tight spaces or near walls. A hint for anyone using modern controls, if you walk to an edge then draw your guns, let go of walk and tap back and it gives you the perfect run up for jumps.
Ellen's experience of Tomb Raider 2 very similar to mine xD I was too afraid to start the levels (that was for my older sister and dad) but I spent a lot of time on the assault courses across the games
Actually, it depends on if you’re used to tank or modern controls. As someone who never played a game with tank control, tank control was unplayable for me, had to switch to modern control just to be able to play.
Honestly, I play with tank controls but the modern ones have potential. The main issue is you don't have a consistent way to get a run up to set up jumps (you can take out your guns but it's not intuitive and sometimes you don't have guns in some parts of the game). There are a few things they could tweak around as well but I got a time of 1:39.9 just now and that's with me wasting several seconds at the end before I realized you have to press Y and to use the zip line and not RT. As long as you make good use of the walk button (same way you would with tank controls) and you take advantage of the quick ledge grab for modern controls (hold RT as you go over the edge) you'll be kind of okay. That being said, they need to add some tutorial for modern controls, even if just text boxes
All the sidestepping and individual steps in Janes tank control attempt was so reminiscent of my favourite TV show of my childhood - Knightmare. Thanks for the (presumably unintentional) nostalgia Jane :)
All the modern remakes of games that I've played, I end up switching to the classic controls. Partly cause they're often badly adapted for modern controls, and partly because my muscle memory is so hard coded to the old controls that it's the only way I can play.
It’s so easy to forget that, while bad, tank controls were part of the overall game, so the game was designed to accommodate them. And hard agree on the muscle memory, too
The modern controls don’t work because the levels are designed on a grid, and all of Lara’s moves are based on that grid. Forward jumps, side and backflips all move in that grid. Don’t use the sticks on your controller, use the d pad, to move forward smoothly, press forward and to turn while moving forward role your thumb so that you are pressing forward and left or right at the same time. Also don’t use the right stick to move the camera it messes up her moves, instead if you need to see something stop walking and hold the look button then you can look around from Lara’s perspective.
I was there! During those days the youth of today couldn’t possibly comprehend! You see these games were truest to a puzzle platformer, navigating the levels with Lara’s arsenal of jumps, steps and rolls. These moves combined in an exact order to result in completion.
Tank controls all the way the grid system for the tomb raider games are built around how it's designed to play. Using the d pad works wonders with the tank controls.
I chose tank controls cause modern doesnt allow backflips or sommersaults. Fun fact you have to walk up to the zipline, cant interact with things while running
You can but you have to have your guns out which is goofy as you’d have to unequip to grab during certain jumps adding extra input requirements. It’s just not worth it for how convoluted everything becomes with modern controls
@elvickRULES that's actually not true. I really wish they would've made a tutorial video for the modern controls. Your guns only stay out as long as you hold the draw weapon button (L2 for me) down. So once the jump begins you can just release the button and lara puts her guns away. Also your grab is mapped to exclusively the "secondary" button removing it from the action button entirely. However, unlike in tank controls once stuck to a ledge you will hold on until you press the roll button to release. The modern controls are only difficult because the game doesn't do any work to explain how to use them to access laras tools so you just assume it's only a method of smoother movement. As someone very familiar with the og controls and game modern is faster for almost all the platforming, but most people are going to be turned away by the jank inherent in both modern and tank controls.
I love Lara Croft/the Tomb Raider series, but the controls on this remaster have produced some white hot gamer rage that I haven’t experienced in quite a while
Yeah this is a great demonstration that things are designed the way they were for specific gameplay back then and just shoving random screen relative controls into them is a mess. Kinda like controlling a car with a bicycle handle lol
Jane, Ellen and Andy (with cameos from Mike and later Luke), I do believe this is one of the best videos you have ever made and I'm sure many other people who have or will watch this video will agree with me on that statement. These games are simply awesome and the nostalgia juices are on fire just watching this, I need to get this for myself and experience it first hand. But, you would think they as well as updating the graphics (which I assume you can change from old to new whenever you want) they would update the controls properly so you could have a choice and experience good classic controls and good new controls, but alas we can only dream of this reality sadly. Btw, I love the added touch of disapproval or approval messages on the video, very nice touch indeed.
Again, despite the mental trauma for all involved, I absolutely loved this video! Dare we imagine a limited Rage Quit Oxboxtra series with the team? 🤣🤣 Loved it, thanks guys.
Tysm for the dpad advice the tank movement is now not so hard and ill try to be patient with it, now i can play properly with her lovely side and back jumps, on modern controls i walked a tut tht suggest to hold the action button then wall off and climb up and u are on the end of the ledge of the area as alternative to back jumps but i doesnt rlly fit with me so, modern only good for movement rlly with the movement stick, other than that ty for the dpad advice❤ now i can play happier knowing i can use her side jumps
Ellen rocking her OutsideX* is awesome. The sweater and hair are a great combo. Also, the this trio made my day today. Thank you all. Internet hugs have been filed with relevant regulatory bodies.
I remember my mom watching me playing Tomb Raider and her only comment was "She sure moans and huffs a lot", completely breaking my immersion. I was like, "Of course she does. Wouldn't you if you had to do all this climbing stuff??"
There used to be a way to get out of bounds jump glitch in that leafy corner where the obstacle course starts. Wonder if it's still there? Infact there wre a lot of places you could use the corner-jump glitch to do weird stuff
I never played these games on a console, so I used the keyboard to play them. I used to be pretty good at this obstacle course. I don't remember what my best time was, but I know that except for the parts where the game forces you to go slow (like climbing the ropes), I used to be able to run through the entire course. You can shave a couple seconds off your time by starting on the left side, that way when you get to the side-jump section, you're already lined up with the first jump. Note: I am NOT a speed runner. I have never tried to speedrun a game. I just used to practice this part quite a bit.
I feel if they could take the Tank controls and Combine this with modern in some way. It would make it so much better for me. I’m too used to modern controls to relearn Tank, but the modern controls are just not right either. 😢
17:20 Jane's a real one for this. 17:49 No one else has realised that jumping before hitting the water means you're not walking slowly through the water.

The real test was doing the maze in time to get the secret room. I don't know how I aced that at 7...and at 33 i still don't want to play the last level 😂😂

OMG, I expected funny, but this exceeded my expectations!! 🤣🤣🤣 I would like to point out, though, since some people in the comments seem to be confused: saying that the modern controls are _worse_ is not the same as saying that the classic controls are _good!_ ☺
The free camera is useful sometimes to see where you're trying to go, but otherwise the modern controls are terrible. I tried Tomb Raider Anniversary which I think these controls are based on, and these ones are still worse.
Never played Tomb Raider 2, but played 1 & 3 on PC with keyboard. It was *an experience*. IIRC, to do a handstand, hold Shift while climbing onto a ledge, but I have no idea how to do it with a controller.
@@robehickmann thats not a side jump, thats jumping to forward in the direction. A side jump is the side flip she does. All those different flips that arent in the modern control scheme let you platform differently. like for example in the obstable course in t2 tutorial level, the bit with the platforms you can side jump, forward jump, side jump in seconds. Loads of the levels have these setups where you can flip like an acrobat and scale things quickly
to hop back a square using modern controls: 1.) press look button 2.) tilt analog stick backwards 3.) press look button again if you hold the walk button while doing this you can take a single step backwards, this is useful for taking a walking step into a running jump and may be more reliable than running a full square as toggling modern controls allows you to jump earlier in Lara’s running animation than usual.

Imagine how good you'll be now!
24:51 I should rewatch Spaced. It probably holds up, right?
Also, been a while since I heard anyone called a toffee-nosed git 😂
i think it's silly to think all games should have the same controls, it's cool to see how the levels were built around the controls they had
The modern rope textures moving when you climb is throwing me off so much I cannot unsee it
Thats paralax mapping
Mo' dern, mo' problems?
This was fun. Tanks!
Actually, it depends on if you’re used to tank or modern controls. As someone who never played a game with tank control, tank control was unplayable for me, had to switch to modern control just to be able to play.
@@whitewolf3051Is this post all you have?
I love how the whole team "showed up" for this video. I would recognize those background voices anywhere.
Metroid Prime Remastered's modern controls are a massive upgrade compared to the OG
I'm very glad Andy quoted "it made me want to drown things" from Spaced. It popped in my head every time Lara was in the water.
Really appreciating the Spaced reference!
"The camera is the main villain." Much like in soulsbornes! Is Tomb Raider a soulsborne now? In this essay I- *gets dragged off screen*
Wait, no! Let them speak! LET THEM SPEAK
Camera lock-on in soulsbornes are the real villain
Soulsbornes? Surely you mean elden soulsbornekirings?!!
Duh Dark Souls invented video games literally every game is the dark souls of dark souls.
turn off modern controls and the camera works just fine
Jane showing Andy how it's done!
Would like to have seen Mike and Luke's attempts.
I am tempted to ask for an unedited version of this, but I fear it might be 6 hours long.
Decades of innovation... for this
"State of the art technology and a billion floating point calculations-- brought ya' _that..._
What a time to be alive.
I love Lara Croft/the Tomb Raider series, but the controls on this remaster have produced some white hot gamer rage that I haven’t experienced in quite a while
Jane will remember that...
I love the editing in this video
Those `suicide dives` into the wall would humble the entire ECW/GCW roster. Jane is the titular Innovator of Violence now.
I literally have tried every button and i legit can't figure out how to exit the vehicles in tomb raider 3
Have you tried to hold every button instead ??
@@dnakatomiuk i have she wont get off the damn quad bike

I see your "Spaced" reference, Andy!
Someone told me to use tank controls and map buttons and it helped me so much. The camera needs work.yeah a sometimes don’t work on jumping
Every single video you produce and post makes me warmer inside but specially loving this apparent return to the playing together on camera format ❤❤❤❤
18:41 "Nothing can go wrong here!"
Tag that one for 7 Times We Celebrated Too Soon.
Yeah this is a great demonstration that things are designed the way they were for specific gameplay back then and just shoving random screen relative controls into them is a mess. Kinda like controlling a car with a bicycle handle lol
or a submarine with a controller..is it still too soon?
Ye tank controls better cl, my action button being finnicky on modern, i wish modern kept the back jump and side jumps still
Ellen rocking her OutsideX* is awesome. The sweater and hair are a great combo. Also, the this trio made my day today. Thank you all. Internet hugs have been filed with relevant regulatory bodies.
Andy narrowly avoiding a note from HR 😂
Good to have a Christmas challenge locked in already.
I remember paying this in the day and not realising how tricky the control system was , trying to play this now in your 60's, nightmare !!
I remember playing the Last Revelation with my brother on og hardware, the controls made the game way more funny than it needed to be xD
[Jane Disliked That]
I remember my mom watching me playing Tomb Raider and her only comment was "She sure moans and huffs a lot", completely breaking my immersion.
LOVING Andy’s Spaced quote at the end 🤣🤣
They need to add a dedicated button to go into her stances for backing up and side jumping for modern controls.
Was unprepared for (but delighted by) Jane's reference to the Logo programming language!
This was a great video. I was cracking up watching you three play as it mirrored my experience when I first got the game and had to relearn the tank controls and find out modern controls are not applicable to this game.
You can feel Andy's inner rage lol, I used to love locking the butler in the freezer 😈🤣
Again love the concept of seeing you guys play something together in a physical space. Remind me of the old fun live streams in loading bar
That tank run was incredibly impressive Ellen, my childhood self is in absolute awe 🙌🏻
The real test was doing the maze in time to get the secret room. I don't know how I aced that at 7...and at 33 i still don't want to play the last level 😂😂
Very much a fan of the Baldurs gate style disapprovals 😂
Tank controls are not bad at all actually i prefer tank controls i feel they have more precision then modern controls not just in tomb raider but in games in general.
Conclusive proof that tank controls are superior, and that Andy raging at a game is comedy gold 😂
Actually, it depends on if you’re used to tank or modern controls. As someone who never played a game with tank control, tank control was unplayable for me, had to switch to modern control just to be able to play.
@@whitewolf3051omigod why keep posting this????
Make me feel better to see someone who plays games for a living getting as angry as I do. I know it’s time to take a break when my dog quietly leaves the room because I’m shouting unprintable things to my in-game self when I’m sucking at something in a game.
I had no issues with the tank controls, I’ve been playing these games since I was a kid, you guys are making me feel old, I could’ve sworn we were the same age😅
OMG, I expected funny, but this exceeded my expectations!! 🤣🤣🤣
I would like to point out, though, since some people in the comments seem to be confused: saying that the modern controls are _worse_ is not the same as saying that the classic controls are _good!_ ☺
The free camera is useful sometimes to see where you're trying to go, but otherwise the modern controls are terrible.
It is so ironic that by removing the side jumps the "modern controls" force you to go back to tank control turns.
You can do side jumps in modern, she jumps in whatever direction you put the analogue stick
Loads of the levels have these setups where you can flip like an acrobat and scale things quickly
to hop back a square using modern controls:
1.) press look button
2.) tilt analog stick backwards
3.) press look button again
if you hold the walk button while doing this you can take a single step backwards, this is useful for taking a walking step into a running jump and may be more reliable than running a full square as toggling modern controls allows you to jump earlier in Lara’s running animation than usual.
