    'im authorizing you to use my firearm' was a reference to 'the guy who didn't like musicals' where John says the same thing :) thats why the applause was so loud for that moment.

      @@singwithAshley there are several points in this show where the audience reaction is because of a callback or reference to TGWDLM - such as the reaction/gasps in the very first scene after the Wiggly jingle as the audience realizes it’s Paul and Emma (main characters from TGWDLM)

    8:53 OMG you just explained what it is about Jeff’s singing that always makes my ears cringe a bit. His overall range, power, and sustain are amazing. But his tone varies a lot between his “voices” and he writes vocal lines that frequently jump between them.

    • @ForeverDegenerate
      @ForeverDegenerate 3 місяці тому +5

      Yep. It's because he always writes himself into his Falsetto when it' not necessary or, when he's not the composer, he will choose to go into his Falsetto when it's not necessary and, tonally, it throws the song off and not in a good way. That's my only complaint about Jeff Blim: It often feels like he goes Falsetto because he can, not because he should. When Jeff stays between his Head and Chest, he sounds incredible.
      Interestingly enough, this is also the same complaint I have regarding Lauren Lopez, but for a slightly different reason. With Lauren, I don't find that her begin written into or choosing to go into her Falsetto tonally throws off the song, but rather that she rarely has the power up there to actually make it sound good. Like Jeff, when Lauren is between her Head and Chest, she has phenomenal power. But when she hits her Falsetto, she barely has any power whereas Jeff still has power up there.

    Two quick things: 1. Jeff has mentioned in his livestream Q&A that he should adapt aongs more for himself like he does for other singers. 2. Matt Dahan is a big part of the music as the music director for this show and others. He and Jeff make a great team to bring these songs to life.

    First thing, I personally appreciate the "lesson" with the song. It is what makes these different than most reaction videos. So thank you. Second, you are not wrong to really like Jeff. I think he does know his limits, but I also think he likes to try to challenge himself as well. It is like good enough is not good enough. If you decide to watch more StarKid shows, you'll see (hear) that he tests his limits in the higher range on more than one occasion. Some people think that it is too piercing when he goes up in his upper register while others are cool with it. I don't mind it because I see the vision, it I can understand why others are not as comfortable with it. The vocal gymnastics that Jeff (and everyone really) perform is amazing to me. This is also true when they sing in character, which is even more difficult. Anyway, loved the reaction as always and can't for the next.

    This reprise gets stuck in my head ALL THE TIME. It's so short, and the way he "passes the vocal football," as you called it, really tickles my brain, lol.

    With Jeff I always find myself wishing he had more songs solidly in his chest voice, because I love his chest voice. I find when he goes super high it sometimes feels like he goes a bit sharp? Though my musical education has unfortunately been very limited so I could be very wrong about that.
    Also, their musical Twisted has a fantastic reprise song, Golden Rule is followed immediately by it's reprise and it works so well.

      So excited to hear some twisted material!
      You’re hearing the “piercing” tone that is needed to achieve those higher notes. It can be a bit cringe! 😬 he makes it work well! But can understand that it may be an acquired taste! So glad to see you again!

    Thanks again! 😄Jaime Lynn Beatty is *so* strong vocally, I love it... I'm looking forward to you reacting to more of her vocals in future (hopefully!) She's one of my personal favorites. Hilarious actress too. She's a mezzo soprano and your right btw, Jeff's natural voice is a baritone (they have said these things in livestreams). Jeff is planning on writing more songs in his natural range for future Starkid shows like Cinderella's Castle (he said in a recent livestream).

    Honestly I wish he would have written it to be a bit softer and less belty on those high notes. Jeff loves singing up there, but he’s able to sing so sweetly in his head voice…I know he’s going for a powerful moment here, but honestly I think a softer, maybe even more ethereal delivery would have worked for the scene and sounded so much more beautiful.
    That aside…..Jeff’s writing, both musically and lyrically in this show is incredible. This, in my opinion, is their most well rounded shows. Most StarKid is very aggressive humor with some nice heartfelt undertones. This entire show feels the opposite and it’s magical. Jeff killed it with these songs. This one is phenomenal. First time watching I wasn’t super impressed with Monsters and Men. Good song, a bit odd but for his character it was cool and let the cast show off a bit and set the “determined to stop the evil” vibe for the government. But holy cow the reprise is incredible. The PERFECT time for it right after the title number, with Lex resigned to her fate and mourning her wasted life of falling short and seeing her little sister as the actual strong one. The text setting of “look me in the eye now Lex/and make a solemn vow to become your best self now” is just genius. The ability to bring this line back with such a deeper, heartfelt and important meaning with Lex makes me tear up every time. Watch Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Jeff has a gift for creating amazing, hard hitting reprisals that really master the double entendre in presentation and meaning.
    Can’t WAIT to see you react to “If I Fail You”. One of my favorite StarKid songs EVER (in part bc Dylan is a boss and my voice type matches him - which is great bc I swear his characters get some of the BEST songs lol). Jeff’s writing there is just majestic also. Spoiler alert: features another incredible reprisal section/callback. Jeff is a boss.

    Hey, I'm enjoying all of your commentaries on Starkid but I wanted to thank you specifically for this video.
    I've always resented the President storyline a little because I felt it took screentime away from the main characters and didn't add much, but your analysis of this reprise has changed my mind!
    When you pointed out Jon singing the lines more softly to Lex and he tells her "your leaders are helpless" I realised that it hits so much harder because we actually saw it (and heard it!) We heard him go to powerful people, inspire them with a strong, rousing song and then we saw them turn into cowards who unwittingly started a nuclear war. So when he comes to Lex, more gently but no less urgently, and entrusts her with the task, it's all the more meaningful.
    Anyway, just wanted to say thanks. On to the next video! :D

    Jeff's falsetto is one of the most contentious topics in Starkid. Some love it, some hate it. I think he can sound phenomenal, he has the range, he has the power. But sometimes it's a bit too experimental.
    Could you turn off the subtitles maybe? They're almost always wrong and it's SO distracting. Maybe I'm too language focused but seeing that is like hearing someone miss a note... every sentence. I can't escape it.
    Btw one more question, is a falsetto a whistle tone or a head voice? I'm completely tone deaf and I don't know anything about vocal training so this is really interesting!

      @poppetawoppet 3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah his mix is very piercing so I think that’s what most people’s issue is

    • @singwithAshley
      @singwithAshley  3 місяці тому +5

      Hi! I think I need to do a live about my subtitles😅 I have friends in the deaf community so I try to do subtitles for myself. I’ve been trying to omit the subtitles from the videos I’m reacting to altogether. But subtitles seem to be a common issue. So we need to find a compromise it seems lol
      LOVE YOUR CURIOSITY IN THE VOICE! I always feel like I “over share” so it gets me excited to hear when others want to”more”.
      Falsetto is a head voice technique. It’s when your voice sounds “false” than the voice you’ve already presented. You hear this a ton in popular music today like Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. When you hear a vulnerable “flip” in their voice it’s typically a falsetto. Most guys can sing into a female range but it doesn’t sound like their voice. This is falsetto. Most male voices high register is falsetto and most female high voices are head voice. Head voice is light and airy!
      Hope this helps. I’m probably going to do a live next week to chat about all these things!

      @@singwithAshley I see your point in needing the subtitles, I agree with that! But if they're wrong it doesn't help anyone, especially the hard of hearing. The Starkid vids have good quality subtitles, you can just enable those and then transcribe your own comments (or use speech to text and check that).
      Also, there are SO MANY Starkid songs I want your take on!! Your videos are super interesting and I love it when you go in teacher mode. Makes me see this musical with fresh eyes (or ears rather) even if I've seen it probably 6 times. Since you've seen AVPM I am curious if you had any insight on how certain singers improved over the last 15 years and what they've worked on.
      Ugh I could pick your brain for hours!

    Jeff's natural range singing voice is one of my favorites in all Starkid. He has one of the best songs in that range in Trail to Oregon. I really hope you eventually watch that show because o think it's Jeff's best role and it has my favorite song in all of Starkid (not sung by Jeff).

    If you want an idea how LOW Jeff Blim can sing, here's a song medley from a recent concert Starkid did - Jeff's portion begins at 2:55 in the video:

    I'm just curious if there's a better way for him to sing it while still reaching those notes? In my opinion, he can reach those notes but I feel like it could be done better to not sound so restrained (?) if that's the right word for it.

    Awesome video! I love when you pick apart what's happening vocally. My tism is also vibing gloriously with your ADHD. So nice when that happens. On a vaguely related note, may I encourage you to make use of the OG video's captions for your next Starkid show? I appreciate the effort of adding subtitles. It would just be delightful if they were a little more accurate and SK usually provide good, and oftentimes hilarious, captions with their videos. Looking forward to watching more of these. I'm so happy anytime I'm notified about an upload of yours.
