How to Conduct an Orchestra
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- We’ve all seen a conductor standing in front of an orchestra wielding a baton. All the baton waving might look random to the untrained eye, but there is meaning in every gesture. Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, shows us how he guides the musicians using his body and eye contact.
This Great Big Story was made possible by B.Grimm.

That’s definitely the accent I expect from a conductor
nice one
HAHAHAHA
That's cause of your good taste on tv shows ;)
I love how passionate he is. I hope I find a job like that someday.
i was lowkey expecting someone less famous for a guest... but GBS, HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE GUSTAVO DUDAMEL???
They asked and he agreed
Keep in mind, he is a product of El Sistema, a Colombian music program for street kids.
How to Conduct an Orchestra.
Me: With electricity running through the intruments?
H8w weird, that piano's starting to dance and it turned purple!
Who wants two set violin to see this ?
ME. See if it's sAcRiLeGiOuS or not
If you can conduct slowly, you can conduct quickly
@@stoneminer4464 given that most of this video is dudamel and history, i'd say it's legit musically
No
Yes, was thinking this all the way through
The Great Big Story: as a musician myself (violin) bringing in Dudamal was a FANTASTIC thing to do and I really like how you brought him in. He is one of the greatest
He's literally the worst conductor in the world.
RIP For those people who never had orchestra in their school.
Rip me
"I fear I might be writing a Requiem for myself."
As a conducting/composition student, I can say that this video is good, especially what with your conversation with gustavo dudamel, but you would need a whole video series to really go over conducting. The possibility's for conducting are infinite. (Great Big Story still did a good job though, so I'm not hating or anything.)
Whenever I see classical stuff on youtube, I always think of twoset
Why are you on UA-cam WHEN YOU COULD BE PRACTICING LIKE LING LING?!? Jk me too 😂
Who here is from an orchestra? No? Ok...
I gotchu brother. Cello is my way 👌
I play the violin myself
Tim Frost yes my dude
first chair cellos unite
Well not orchestra but cathedral choir, we work with orchestras tho 😁 I feel every conductor has a totally different style and it’s like a horse you need to learn how they work
Play violin
The conductor is a beast he knows everybodys parts and lets you know when to get it in
Conducting so many instruments by yourself can be scary at first. I remember feeling like I was going to pass out, but now I love it.
i started waving my stick around and my furniture started floating.
It's leviOsa, not leviosAR
Broooo they actually got Gustavo Dudamel to do this interview wtf
Add one more stick then you have chopsticks.
So, years ago I went to a conducting workshop (old band director here) and they told a story. To recognize music educators, the Chicago (maybe; large, major orchestra) invited high school band and orchestra conductors to lead the symphony. The program didn't last long because symphony musicians complained too much. It seems they liked the school conductors too much...
You picked the best conductor, I love you for that
Got a Great Big Story ad. Nice.
Any (ex-)orchestra/band kids here? I played first violin, third row, outside chair.
viola, 5th desk, outside chair
cello, 1st chair ;-)
Here is some things my orchestra teacher does;
First, he pats his chest very quietly so we know the tempo
He will (sometimes) lean a bit on his left for conducting
He is a (sorta) shy teacher. So when making an announcement he doesn’t put the mic to loud
He gives us a cell phone/food party even tho food is not aloud in orchestra
I’m case you’re curious, these are the composers that appeared in this 0:24:
Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, Schubert, Mahler, STRAVINSKY
Sometimes it just looks like the conductor is having a seizure
It takes a very special person to stand in front of a bunch of people and wave a stick for a living.
If you can conduct slowly, you can conduct quickly
wtf does that mean
I believe the conductor is the luckiest man in the world: To be that close and personal with all those professional musicians in front of him !!!
0:27 I love how this video DID mention Stravinsky
Gustavo seems like such a kind person
Coordinating how loud certain groups of instruments sound, how fast they are, reining in one's that go out of sync, etc. It requires sone really good hearing and understanding how it needs to sound at any given point.
Very passionate and dramatic speech. And doesn't answer the question at all.
I got a Great Big Story ad on this video 😂😂 *ADVERTISEMENT 1000*
"a new conductor has like 20 seconds to earn the whole orchestra's respect or they won't follow him at all and play on their own"
(Or something like that)
-Twoset violin
Educational and informative, I learned something today and thank you for it.
I could watch a conductor wield his/her baton all day long. ALSO ya'll got Dudamel?!?!?! Amaaaaazing
i know dudamel as that crazy Dvorak New World Symphony conductor lol
I had the pleasure of being under his conduction. He is great , I love it .
may i ask when and what orchestra you were in ?
I’ve played some of the pieces in the background. It gives me flashbacks from when the conductor was upset with the whole orchestra and flipped😣
I someday would like to have a video about conductor by showing comparison and difference of orchestra playing same music with and without conductor, as well as how conductor affects the outcome of a piece of music that looks the same on paper
Well, this maestro is good... But not as good as my boy Bugs Bunny!
Or Thomas Cat
I think you mean LEOPOLD!!
this is so inspirational
I just got a great big story ad while watching a great big story video
I really love the quality and montage of most of your video. You are truly outstanding channel on youtube, giving the knowledge in interesting manner, with style and individualistic approach. Thank you so much for your work!
classical musician here, im ready for the worst
edit: this was fantastically done. for all the other videos on the internet that portay musicianship so trashily, this is easily the best ive seen. thank you
What surprised me the most is that the fact that they got Dudamel for this video
Conductors are secretly wizards from hogwartz
Dudamel was at his prime when conducting the symphony of the new world to the pope
Welp, that's definitely me when I conduct an orcastra
In the Netherlands, we have a TV programme called Maestro, in which celebrities try to conduct an orchestra. In the first episodes, things turn out pretty bad.
When Dudamel is in a video, I click on it and I watch it.
So they have a GBS ad in the beginning, the video itself as an ad, and an ad at the end. Ultimate gamer move.
Ling Ling can conduct an orchestra and play every instrument at the same time.
All i know that they just need to wand there hand like a fairy god parent....
Ignorance
Bryson Adams rude
Come on, it was funny
Thanks,i will conduct an orchestra tomorrow 😃👍🏻

*I didn’t see the channel name and thought it was a HowToBasic video*
The thing is that you get presentated as the Director and you get recognition by the work of others. Anyone who Knows about music could do that, it Doesnt seems a Difficult thing..
Nice.
What is the name of the song in the opening part of this video?
Beethoven's symphony no.9, second movement
Tianhao Luo thank you so much 😊

I don't see the problem
Torterra kart listen to his splattered ink on paper (commonly known as his work) and tell me again why you don’t see a problem
@@hiera1917 are you one of those early music purists? stravinsky is good I like his pieces.
My Choral Conduction given from my former High School choir teacher
My Orchestral Conduction given from The Internet
As a millennial, I give thanks to orchestra conductors who raised me with the best soundtracks of Disney ever.
You don’t need to be a millennial to appreciate Disney’s fine music!
Playing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony Mvt. 4 in high school currently, and let me tell you without my conductor, we as a symphony orchestra would be screwed. xD
Awesomeeeee
Where's my baton!?
I got your add on your own video
Bruh
Oh my gawd

Whose idea was it to put the mozart vs salieri piece in the background?
1:47 That's no conductor, it's a human metronome.
