Well optical inspection is the first thing you do before your start any measurements. Doesn't make much sense to start the other way around if your devices main SOC chip is a piece of charcoal for example. Corrosion due to fluid ingress must be one of the most common failures in any handheld electronics device. Still a good job by Alex. His content is amazing!

hi Alex. Thanks alot for sharing your knowledge with the world. Just a question though, when testing for short, you put the red probe to ground and the black probe to component. What is the reason for that? Can it be done vice versa?

Another fix with a shorted capacitor. Have you done a repair with an "open" component? I read somewhere these smd capacitors most of the time will short which makes it easier to diagnose (thank goodness for those thermal imager cameras!). Perhaps one of those "no fixes" had an "open'" component which definitely need some kind of diagram (and lots of time, which is not really worth it for any repair person)? Great educational videos and thanks for posting!
What you call an 'open' cap troubles no one. Think about it. If you are calling the opposite of a short 'open' then flicking the cap off the board is the same. Other components must conduct but not a capacitor. Alex often checks for non-conducting components, filters and resistors mostly.

Get colored tapes and tape a small portion of those iphone connectors so you don't have to keep looking at each one and overtime you'll remember which color to grab. Hope this helps. :)

I would like to know as well. I only have the poor man's Atten 858D+ and I can never get my hot air soldering done as quickly as Alex. Maybe it's also about practice ... I haven't hot air soldered a lot in my life.

Hello! At 7:45 a voltage drop is being mentioned. Can anyone tell me what it means? What is is used for? Thank you.
Voltage drop just means the voltage he is reading on his multimeter. When in diode mode the multimeter applies a low voltage / low current to the circuit to see if any semiconductors start to conduct. Typically a diode will conduct at around 0.2 to 0.7V depending on the type of diode. In any case he just checked if there wasn't a dead short anymore and verified this by reading a voltage drop of 0.2V, which means that some semiconducters in the circuit dropped the test voltage the multimeter applied by that amount. Any voltage reading can be considered a voltage drop. Imagine a two legged component like a resistor. When you're reading 0.2V voltage drop on the multimeter it basicaly means that the potential difference is 0.2V which means that one side of the compenent has 0.2V of electrons (negative charge) more on it's negtive side than on it's positive side, the drop in potential (0.2V "worth of electrons" on the negative side VS 0V worth of electrons on the other side -> 0.2V voltage drop) is why it's called a voltage drop.
Voltage drop (in volts) mentioned in this context can be thought of as similar to resistance (in ohms). The way the diode test function on the multimeter is expressed.
Can I ask you guys a question and please help me. I have a dead short on one of my 12v 6pin lines (GTX970 msi) and tried using voltage injection.... as far as I can see only the GPU is heating up... I AM NOT USING A THERMAL CAM.

anyone know what can be. my xs max over showed high rtemperature on display so i turn it off now wont charge or turn on.
Big boss next iPhone 8 tgat comes in for repairs after Alec fixes it get some helium gas and let some out in the office. It throws the crystals off and the phone shuts down for a couple hours. Phone starts up by itself after the helium gas goes away. It only takes 3-5 % of helium.
You should do some lives Alex when you work and the shop is closed as to not risk and customers data being in the videos
How to know value of the capacitor replaced?
Crystal balk or donor board for part.
Circuit diagrams and board viewer files might be available for the iPhone 8. The information is stored in these diagrams and design files and can be looked up.
