The look on his face is the same as mine after I fix something. The inner pleasure and gratitude after seeing that you have managed a repair, is indescribable. This is the expression of the face of a man who likes what he does more than the money he receives for repairs. It's more than a job or a hobby ... it's a fulfillment to know that something has come out of your hands that will bring joy to the face of others and that you have managed to bring back to "life" something that others would have thrown at garbage.

I remember repairing an audio digital reverb unit when I was in college 30 years ago. The problem was that the unit would run for 10 minutes and then the audio output started outputting this shrieking noise. If you turned it off for 20 minutes it would run for another 10 minutes before shrieking again. I knew this had to be heat related. Since I was in college and therefore had no money for equipment, I used a frozen package of hot dogs from my freezer, and touched each component with the frozen hot dogs. When I touched one of the voltage regulators, the shrieking noise instantly stopped. A couple dollars for a replacement regulator and the $600 digital reverb was saved.
That would have felt amazing.
I envy you because back then components were bigger.

The thermal camera really picked up the short pretty well I could count the capacitors to the shorted capacitor

In last week's video i actually commented asking for a flux pen video. With all those components packed so close together i think it is better for these boards. Thermal camera gets you close, but the flux pinpoints the bad part.

Hi Alex, I have used IPA in a similar manner to expose the hot part. The IPA evaporates quickly off the hot component.
IPA is a much better method.

Hi, can you make a video about peelable solder mask product like MG Chemical 862-250ML if this product would help SMD soldering noob by covering parts and PCB surface? When I try to fix phones or very small items packed with tiny SMD parts , they often get stick together ! It was so annoying to undo the mass with my crappy setup. You think peelable solder mask would prevent this from happen?

As someone that doesn't understand electronics I have a question. Why does the phone work without replacing the capacitor? Put another way, what is the point in having that capacitor there if the phone can work without it?
Capacitors can prevent voltage spikes
all that cap does is filter the voltage, think of it like the filter on a pipe, if you remove the filter water still flows

I think the easiest way to deal with that brick is to either smash it with a hammer or heat it up on some parchment paper so it flows flat, then you can break off pieces. That's just my first thought

Mabye you can melt more onto a flat surface and brake it in to peaces so you dont have to do this everytime you want to use it.
I see on the market is new laser soldering station, did you have experience with it or did you now something about this new technology
I haven't tried it, but based on first impression, I hate the blinding red light it emits. I don't know if you can hold it or have control on how far or close you can be from the board. or if you can narrow the heat spot rather then burn half the board to desolder one component. With hot air you can increase air speed and reflow a BGA chip using air pressure and see the chip dance, with laser that's not possible. Again i haven't tried the machine, but that's what I concluded based on few videos I watched.

He has explained this in other videos. They are filters that work together to protect other ICs. As Alex has put it, "say you have 100 police officers protecting a building, if one of those officers calls in sick, the building is still well protected".
Hopefully I got that right.
It is a bypass capacitor. It is there, with many others, to remove any noise that could be present on the DC line. If removed it's not gonna harm a lot of the functionality of the circuit board but ideally should be replaced. It is not because of the crowded area and possibly knocking off the neighbouring components, thus creating more damage and more work to do, to fix it.

As someone already said, it is a bypass/decoupling capacitor.
You can also think of it as a sort of local power source near a chip. If a chip draws power in short spikes, having long traces will cause a voltage drop and then a peak as the current drops again, as the traces are essentially like a small coil, an inductor, and the higher the inductance, the more it will resist fast changes in current. So the cap can deliver the spike quickly and then recharge slowly.
They can also have different purposes, filtering in conversion of voltages - as many of the parts run on different, very low voltages. These will be near coils and power conversion chips. Also timing, etc.
So if there are more of them in parallel, knocking one off will likely not impair functionality, as the design has some "margin", but if it is easily possible, and it's clear that it is on a power rail for decoupling, it's better to put another one (maybe 10nF-10uF, closer to 100n if unsure) in place for stability.
