Watch it live. Merle Haggard was an inmate and inspired by Johnny Cash to pursue his country music career after he was released. You guys ROCK!
Actually he was at San Quinton
@@elizabethfranco1284Cash played his 1st prison concert there in 1958 when Merle was a 20 year old inmate there.
@@bryanblack526 Merle was at San Quentin and in the audience when Johnny performed in 1958. He was released in 1960. Live at Folsom Prison was in 1968.
Loved those live lp's when they came out. Prison live lp's. Good stuff.
Ramblin Fever. My favorite Haggard song
Just wanted to mention Johnny's guitarist here, Luther Perkins. He created this guitar sound and it would be very influential on country, rockabilly, rock and roll, and later on, even punk. He proved that if you get a good tone and just play the notes right and cleanly, you don't have to be all over the place and over the top to be very effective.
Luther played bass. His brother Carl played guitar.
@@scottblakey1603 I believe you are confusing Carl with Luther. They were both guitarists, but not brothers. Carl was the "Blue Suede Shoes" guy...
Check out Johnny Cash's song, "When Luther Player The Boogie-Woogie."
@@scottblakey1603 Marshall Grant played the bass. Luther and Carl Perkins both played guitar with Johnny Cash but they were not brothers. Johnny Cash, Luther Perkins, and Marshall Grant were the three guys in the "Tennessee Three".
the warden did not want Johnny to play this song when he played at Folsom Prison. . So he opened the concert with it.
Johnny, the man in black...
Johnny Cash grew up very very poor, and he never forgot where he came from. He was truly a man of THE PEOPLE. Human, just like us and he didn't pretend. Truly the last of music artists who related to working class people. A great story teller...
Johnny Cash - One of the greats who transcended the Country genre. He was a complicated man with serious drug and alcohol problems. But he was also a sensitive soul of great compassion.
That song is a stone classic. Johnny straddled the line between country and rockabilly. Hit "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "or "Cocaine Blues" next. He was a man who lived a life where he was on the edge of prison. A man of integrity.
Classic stuff.
Gotta watch it live inside the prison. Jonny was the original OG ! One the greatest story tellers ever! The man in black !
"Man in Black" is a must-see / watch!!!
IMO this is one of the few songs where a live version is the best and for me it’s the recording of the performance at Folsom prison.
Roy Clark covers this it's fire! Roy Clark is a Universal Treasure as is Johnny Cash both are gone now RIP
Agree, need to watch Home Free's version, it is so good
Roy Clark was a legit top best country music guitarist of all time. Roy Clark could give Jimmy Page a run among others. Dude could pick and strum most anything with strings like he was the best at each instrument. I didn't like country music at all back then, but watching Roy Clark picking was always a thing I paid attention to.
Johnny is the man his cover of Trent Reznors "Hurt" as well as Soundgardens "Rusty Cage" nearer the end of his years took him to another level in my book!
His performance of this song at a show for the inmates at Folsom Prison is iconic. 🔥✌️
Johnny Cash was phenomenal! His voice is gravely yet smooth, amazing songwriter, charisma overload, super talented musician and performer! Watched The Johnny Cash Show 69-71, as a kid and loved him ever since. He and his wife, June Carter, did a fun-loving duo on his show, "I'm Going to Jackson."
Always loved Johnny Cash. Pure folk country fried with a rock blues pulse. But I remember when it wasn't fashionable in rock circles to like Johnny Cash. That didn't last long, his lyrics and cadence with that baritone was something else. He was a good man at heart.
The first Johnny Cash song I ever remember, back in the early 70's as a child. Always loved it.
Johnny is beloved by EVERYONE. Rappers, ROCKERS, Country
I was exposed to Johnny Cash as my parents listen to all the older country music as well rock and roll from the 50s and 60s so I had quite the exposer to lots of different music as a child his man is a Legend and his music will live forever.
Stay with Johnny for a while. There's a reason why he was a legend. His music
The man in black!
Johnny Cash, performed in both Folsom Prison and San Quinton for the inmates and recorded them for live albums. He is also a triple threat, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Great reaction and to hear the lighter side of him, A Boy Named Sue
He has so many great songs released over several decades. My wife and I were able see Johnny, his wife June Carter Cash, and their band in a small local theatre here in southwest Michigan. Must have been 30 years ago now. Saw Gordon Lightfoot in that same Theatre within a year of seeing Cash. Both put on incredible shows.
Johnny Cash. Legendary outlaw music 🎵. 65 he was in a cave in Chattanooga. He went in with his guitar and his pills. Preacher lead him to the Lord Jesus Christ 🙏. Sinner Saved by Grace plus Faith plus Nothing else. Adios 🌄🐴
Grew up listening to Johnny. Saw him when I was 12 yrs. old @ Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium. Great show!✌️🎵🎼🎶🎸
There's a famous picture from this concert of Johnny flipping the warden the bird, saying "this one's for you".
That was Johnny"s attitude. The inmates loved him!! Johnny identified with them.
My dads favorite singer, get choked up whenever I hear him.
The inmates went crazy, watch it live
The sound is unmistakable. A raw sound.
Johhny was all about the common man.He wore black for a reason. He was a very complex man and a true legend!
Right on, i'm glad you checked this out, thanks guys.
The Man In Black is Johnny's best song imo. Real lyrics written by - and about - a real man.
Played a concert in a prison, i think that photo is one of them. Love his Ring of fire song. BB King gave a concert in a prison as well, an epic performance from the man .
We used to call our 8th grade teacher Johnny Cash. She always wore black. She lol with us. ❤
I saw Johnny Cash in 1968 or 69, went with my dad and uncle, Charley Pride was the opening act, good stuff!, been a fan for 60 years now.😊
Johnny Cash ...Gods gonna cut you down.. it's fierce
Very impressive doing the Man in Black. He had a television show in the late 60s early 70s that featured different acts from different genres. He was invited by Nixon to perform at the Whitehouse. Nixon thought by having him perform would be a boost to his campaign. And a slap in the face face to the protests that were going on against Vietnam. He gave Johnny a Playlist of songs to play. To Johnny's credit he surprised them. Everyone should watch Tricky Dick and the Man in Black. It will give a very clear perspective of who Mr. Cash was. As always fellas excellent reaction to iconic man. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Johnny used to visit prisons all the time, the inmates really loved him cause he never talked down to them. He was a regular guy who just happened to have a golden voice😅😊
I remember this version when I was a kid. The live version, recorded at Folsom Prison, became a hit and this version never got played again.
My dad brought home his 'Johnny Cash Sings Ballads of the True West' 1965. Double LP. Hooked since a wee lad of 10.
In ‘87 or’88 Johnny Cash played with The Boston Pops for July 4th. My husband & I were there. Next morning I am checking out of the Hilton & he was standing next to me doing the same thing ❤️
Johnny's "Live from Folsom Prison" album is legendary.
The Live from Folsom Prison album is worth a trip for sure! Love the Man in Black.
Go into the Johnny Cash rabbit hole! Go go go! Run to that hole!
Johnny Cash song God is going to Cut you Down. A Great Song. Great Video ❤
his last hit was a cover of the nine inch nails song "hurt". when trent reznor heard it he said "this song now belongs to johnny cash". the music video will tear your heart out. be prepared.
The "At San Quentin" live version features the inmates reacting and cheering. Powerful stuff. "A Boy Named Sue" is also in the album and well worth a listen.
Well done Thank you. Blues for the common man......
He went to falkom prison and DID TIME.... Love badass Johnny! Thanks
AKA The Man in Black. Absolute Legend!
Listen to the live version recorded at Folsom Prison. Also add A Boy Named Sue and Ring of Fire.
One of the first country albums I fell in love with. My dad only listened to country thru the 70's, so this album was in my house since back when I can remember. Too bad you guys didn't do the live at Folsom version. It has much more character! Maybe La and Che will do "25 minutes to go" or "Cocaine Blues" for us next?
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Johnny's line "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die" was sampled on Beastie Boys' "Hello Brooklyn" on their album Paul's Boutique. But yeah, Cash was a rare musician that was respected by pretty much everybody, regardless of genre. Country, hip-hop, folk, rock, metal, punk. His music and his persona transcends genre boundaries because he spoke truth to power and stood up for the common man and their troubles while having a ton of swagger doing it.
"A Boy Named Sue" and "One Piece at a Time" are two of his great comedy stories.
As others have mentioned, "Hurt" from one of his "American Music" (IV?) albums is literally chilling
Johnny Cash OOOG RIP
HE PLAYED ALOTTTTTT AT FOLSOM AND SAN QUENTIN PRISON 😊 MORE THAN 50 YEARS AND WAS INDUCTED IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ( 3 ) TIMES LAH AND CHE 😊R.I.P. ☹ TO AN ABSOLUTE MUSICAL LEGEND! I WALK THE LINE , SUNDAY MORNING COMIN DOWN, COCAINE BLUES, ONE PIECE AT A TIME, A BOY NAMED SUE THERE'S A HANDFULL FOR YA!☝
Johnny lived a very interesting life. Walk the Line is a great movie about his life. He did record some songs playing live from the actual Folsom Prison, but there was so much more to him. Here are a few suggestions. A great serious song would be The Man In Black which was his nickname. A great funny song is A Boy Named Sue. A great patriotic piece is Ragged Old Flag. His biggest hits were probably Ring of Fire and I Walk The Line. One of the most powerful and emotional songs you will ever hear is the one he did months before he died called Hurt. It was a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song that he turned on its head and made it his own. Get a tissue for that one.
Yep, you guys could easily do more Johnny Cash, the man was very influential in all genres.
Hell Yeah
My oldest sister hated country music. But she ended up going to a Johnny Cash concert and loved it.
Right on. Glad you enjoyed. The man is real. He had his run ins with the law, but big on the opportunity for second chances for prisoners. This is the opening to a huge catalog of stories, Johnny is about as street cred as you can get for a small town Arkansas poor White boy. Can’t wait for more fellas!
"I Shot A Man In Reno...Just To Watch Him Die" - Damn, now that is beyond Gangster. Johnny Cash & B.B. King both played prisons. Folsom Prison for
Johnny and Live At Cook County Jail for B.B. King - both great albums.
Love Johnny Cash! He is one of those artists who transcends all genres of music. My dad got me listening to this when I was very young but didn’t appreciate it until I got older. Now I love his songs. Listen to a boy named Sue it’s great he was a great storyteller and an American Legend and deservingly so!
I love the scene in the movie Walk the Line where they perform this for the first time.
Did Live at San Quinten........won a grammy..........after about 40 years....he disappeared....and was down and out playing in a Dive bar...and Rick Rubin was in the audience.....and the duo went on to record some of his best under AMerican Recording label in the 1990s.........Rubin maktched him up doing rock covers......even recorded a Bob Marley tune........you could do full album reactions to the rick rubin stuff......and went on to record his last video "Hurt" a trent Resnor cover....
I always found it funny that Johnny Cash had no problem, singing line "I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die" but he didn't want to sing the line from John Prine's Sam Stone "Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose"
Another great great song from 1971 to check out
The song that never ends. I think I’m still playing this song from my last gig. Great song.
thats 1956 fella's. His first big hit. He wrote that while in the army in Germany.
Boy!...love me some good ole' Jonny Cash
I would suggest doing this song next "Johnny Cash - Dressed In Black (The Best Of The Johnny Cash TV Show)"
You guys are the best.
Y'all will appreciate this tune much more from the Live at Folsom Prison album. The reactions from the inmates is priceless.
Great one. Love how you guys are mixing it up - great blend of genres and artists.
Johnny Cash is transcendent. He was so much more than country. He lived a hard life, and always stood up for people who the rest of society abandoned.
Some other great Country singers: Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Patsy Cline. Please react to some Jazz artists too: Miles Davis and John Coltrane, for sure. Bill Evans. Charlie Parker. Sarah Vaughn. Nina Simone. Billie Holiday.
Yeah that scene in the move "Walk the Line" was true where he went to Folsum Prison and played for the inmates.
The live version in Folsom prison is awesome. It’s sped up and a lot harder.
One of my favorite Cash songs…he knew more songs of any American genre than most anyone…used to travel with a record player and stack of records…if you liked this one, try “Man in Black”..says so much…excellent choice…you guys have expanded your musical minds so much since the beginning (I joined when you had about 1.5k subscribers)…I am so proud of you both!😊
He was an icon no doubt ,Merle Haggard has some great prison songs too
Not a big country music fan. But I love me some Johnny Cash.
Grew up with my father listing to Johnny Cash. This is an amazing song. What a storyteller.
Legend
so simple, clean and awesome
You guys should definitely check out Johnny's swan song - Hurt - a cover of Trent Reznor's, from Nine Inch Nails.
He also had a little bit of an acting career. He had a starring part in the Columbo episode "Swan Song". Played a country singer that was controlled by a domineering wife...until he killed her! But, since Lieutenant Columbo was on the case he didn't stand a chance of getting away with it. 🙃 "A Boy Named Sue" must be his most famous song but he had so many others. His cover of "Hurt" is getting a lot of attention these days.
I once heard someone say the most gangster lyric ever written was “I short a man in Reno, just to watch him die” - feels accurate 😂
That line "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die' caused a lot of controversy back when this was released.
The live version where he plays it for the inmates at the prison!
My greatest regret in life is that I never saw Johnny in concert.
When I lived in Franklin, TN, I visited his grave once a month.
He is my hero.
If you get a chance to ever watch this concert he done for the prisoners, it is worth the watch! Just for the inmates to have that concert made them feel worthy and you can see it when they show them on camera. Johnny Cash was all about humanity for all!
Great song..great reaction. Cocaine blues should be the next Mr. Cash reaction.
the fact there wasn't a pause for this speaks volumes.
Country gold😊
You gotta check out the movie for sure, Cash is a legend
There's a famous version where he performs it for the prisoners at Folsom.
You guys have to hear that version too.
It is a bit disconcerting how much they cheer when he says he shot a man just to watch him die... 🤨
He played live at Folsom Prison.
Johnny performed dozens of shows at prisons over 30 years. And released four live albums recorded in prison with “At Folsom Prison” and “Live at San Quentin” being very popular. He believed in prison reform and individual redemption. Although he only spent a few nights in jail, “ The Man in Black” had his demons, which he largely overcame. This song was written in 1953 and released in 1955, and musically was pretty simple in comparison with later songs. Not a big country fan, but Johnny Cash is awesome - a musical legend and wonderful man
Please do "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire". Back in the day everyone knew those songs from AM radio play. Do the video of "Hurt" later after you've experienced what Johnny was, then you can really feel the profound impact of his passing
Hey Fella's try "When the man comes around". It gives me shivers every time....................
Crazy how much respect this man had almost rockers
Johnny Cash was a _firm_ believer in prison reform, believing that everyone deserved a second chance. He gave many free concerts in prisons over the years with 3 making it to albums: Live from San Quinten, Live from Folsom, and Live from På Österåker. Folsom is just an awesome concept album and should be listened to from beginning to end. In between songs there are calls for prisoners over the speaker system and lots of interesting prison noises. The songs getting reactions from the prisoners is fun too. Really. It's worth 40 minutes of your life sometime to have a full listen.
Merle Haggard's song I'm A Lonesome Fugitive and Mama Tried are groundbreaking songs about being a fugitive. Hank Williams #1, Merle Haggard #2, Waylon Jennings #3 .. that's the pecking order at the top. Johnny Cash might be #4. Haggard actually live the life: fugitive, prison.
Dude! Hard truths.
Nobody cooler and genuine than the man in Black. Check out his cover of Soundgarderns Rusty Cage.
