The MASSIVE MUTTON CHOP at NYC's Keens Steakhouse

- Every steak lover has their own opinion for who makes the best steak in NYC. Many will say it's the iconic Peter Luger. Others say Delmonico's (whenever it reopens). Others more will say it's the Old Homestead Steakhouse in NYC, the oldest steakhouse in New York City and the oldest steakhouse in America. A very strong case, however, can be made for Keens Steakhouse in NYC, also known as Keens Chophouse. Keens is frequently on the list of the best steakhouses in NYC and the best steakhouses in New York, if not the best steakhouses in the USA. It's regarded as an iconic NYC landmark and a must eat when you're in the city. I'm here to find out, is Keens good? Or is Keens overrated and it's all hype?
What's interesting about Keens in NYC is that the best item to get here is not the Keens ribeye or the Keens porterhouse steak. Those are excellent as well. The most famous item at Keens however is the Keens legendary mutton chop. The Keens enormous mutton chop is almost the size of my head. While lamb chops are frequently served at New York City steakhouses, mutton is rarely served in the USA in general. People prefer lamb here, although mutton is commonly eaten in countries like China and India. The Keens mutton chop recipe has been sought after by many and there are many re-creations online. It seems simple enough to make, so is it really that amazing getting it in person? What's also interesting is the Keens huge mutton chop is also served with Keens mint jelly. The mint jelly has a really interesting flavor and many have also sought the Keens mint jelly recipe. I personally was not a fan of the taste, but maybe the mint jelly and mutton chop would go together well? Let's find out!
I also wanted to talk a bit about the history of Keens Steakhouse. While the steak at Keens was always famous, Keens was also famous for the Keens pipe club. Many famous people at Keens pipe club left their mark at the restaurant by leaving their clay churchwarden pipes behind. The Keens Albert Einstein pipe, Keens Babe Ruth pipe, Keens Will Rogers pipe, Keens Billy Rose pipe, Keens Teddy Roosevelt pipe, Keens J.P. Morgan pipe, Keens George M. Cohan pipe, Keens Stanford White pipe, Keens John Barrymore pipe, Keens David Belasco pipe, Keens Adlai Stevenson pipe, Keens General Douglas MacArthur pipe, and Keens "Buffalo Bill" Cody pipe are all still on display at the restaurant!

Dude. I've been cooking my entire adult life professionally. 30 years in the industry. That mutton chop was one of the best pieces of meat I've eaten in my life. Me n my family had the pleasure of going there in early 2021 from Idaho to NYC. We got the luxury of having the city to ourselves due to COVID. Their scotch list is insane. The meats are impeccable. The ambiance is unmatched. Love this video. Thx for the review. JW
@@78sound that tells me you are not in the industry and a liar. Muttun chop is the least tender especially compared to dry aged medium rare tenderloin wagyu beef. you have no idea what you are on about. Go spend money and get a 28 day dry aged wagyu ribeye steak then talk
@@irshviralvideolmao are you okay?
@@CrabbinFever no I'm not okay with liars
I’m confused. This place was open during the height of the pandemic? Hmm…
@@irshviralvideowhere did he say it was tender?? I have raised Wagyu cattle, Wagyu x cattle, Corriente, angus, and Aberdeen cattle. Wagyu is a once in a while cook, it’s extremely rich and I cater BBQ, I’ve got 26 years experience, mutton is delicious if cooked proper. But he never said tender…just good.
You’re comparing beef to sheep, you lost credibility. Like saying ribeye is better than pork butt. 🤦🏼
As a non native english speaker, i always do appreciate content creators who spare their time to put subtitles on their videos
Thanks for sharing your experiences and keep up the great work!
I go to Keen’s every year for my birthday, going this week. The mutton chop is a must, but they also have the best prime rib I’ve ever tasted anywhere in the world and I’ve eaten steak everywhere in the world. I only come here because I cook steak at home better than almost anywhere else because these are cuts or cooks that unavailable or inconvenient. Keen’s is amazing.
Would you be willing to share your steak recipe? I'm always looking to improve my steak cooking skills. For my process, I would salt my steak in the fridge overnight then cook on a cast iron to medium rare. Throw in some rendered beef fat or butter at the end and baste it with garlic & rosemary.
@@willm7567 Your process is great. I love salting the day before. I guess the rest depends on the type of steak, Japanese Wagyu, vs American Wagyu, Prime and the cut itself. But in general a great steakhouse always recommends medium for a fatty cut but I disagree. They say medium renders the fat. That’s true, so at home, either reverse sear or sous vide if you have the equipment. That way you slowly render the fat. I love very medium rare so here’s my process after salting the day before. If sous vide vacuum seal twice for no leak safety or thermoworks probe in a oven or even a toaster oven at 1 hr per inch to 95° internal temp max. That renders the fat. Then rub it with oil and kill it on a very hot cast iron both sides and rest, I usually blacken the edges with a torch while it’s on the pan or start with the edges first. It will be a perfect 125°+ pink edge to edge with a great crust incredibly juicy and tender. But the best advice is start with a killer steak. No commercial here but Snake River Farms Manhattan Fillet Gold which is a center cut NY Strip. The best steak in the world in my opinion. Wagyu fat with American prime beef flavor. It’s $ but it’s worth it. Enjoy and let me know. 😁🥩
@@willm7567Guga has some great UA-cam videos on cooking steaks. Check them out.
Keens is amazing. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. But when I go, it is always the mutton chop. It is incredible! It would be great to see a review of the crackling pork shank at Maloney & Porcelli. Another awesome hunk of meat!
Sadly it looks like Maloney and Porcelli is permanently closed 😔
Maloneys is gone sadly yes. The wine dinner was excellent value over the years and put me in a food coma more than once
The mutton chop is legendary. The best meat cut in America.
Oh no! Did not know that M&P is gone! I guess another casualty of the pandemic 😕
"Mary had a little lamb..with Mint Jelly." -Dot Warner 🤣 joking aside that mutton looks so good! 😋
Excellent Review. Your honest reviews are why I am here, Keep up the excellent work !
I love the classic full size mutton chop at Keens with the greens on the side. It is one of my favourite meals. I have no problem finishing the whole thing myself. unfortunately i live in Toronto so I wont be able to have it for a long time from now : ( I am happy to see it still looks great!! I haven’t been there in over 5 years
I'll never forget the look on my brother's face when they set the mutton plate down in front of him!. Been to Keen's a few times and have not been had a bad meal. we were recommended to Benjamin steak house which we enjoyed very much also, Keen's is old world, Benjamin is newer both are really good
Keen's is amazing, and the mutton chop blew me away - had never had it before. Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your reviews , so honest and thats what we need, honesty!!!!!
Love Keens - in my top 3 for nyc
Love the Mutton chop, I've also had the 12oz filet and tried it with both their bernaise and au poivre (both spot on) ... really nice spot to go out with the boys... good spot to bring your dad or father in law.
My mother, born in 1921, always ate her lamb with mint jelly. My father ate his with salt, pepper, garlic, and fresh oregano. I eat mine au jus.
Best steakhouse in NYC. Many others get the hype and the publicity like Luger but Keens blows them all away. The tried and true dependable steakhouse without all the hoopla.
I can't believe I only found your channel this week. You create great videos! We're going to NYC in December and it looks like all we'll be doing there is eating! 🤣 Some useless info: in India, mutton is goat meat, and in the US and UK, it's sheep. I only learnt that recently
Great work per usual!!!!! always enjoy your videos!!!!!! excited for when you get a million subs! YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!
Thanks for the support! I'll keep doing my best and we'll see where this channel goes in 2023!
@@uaeats remember the time you ate a piece of sushi with a hair on it?
awesome review man! I like how raw and honest you seem to be :) cheers man!
Another great video! Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the vid
I love your videos , you are super direct and honest am definitely following.
Thanks for the follow! Yes I will always be honest about the food. I'm glad you enjoy the content
@@uaeats Do you need a reservation for Keens, or you can just walk in and order
Keens is a must go if you’re in Midtown Manhattan. Terrific food, service and atmosphere!
I went to Keens last Thursday with my parents for the first time ever on vacation in NYC. It was amazing and much better in taste and juiciness than P. Luger in Brooklyn we went to on Monday, which was still good. The mutton chop my mom got was very good n really flavorful, but I still thought my NY Strip (cooked rare) was super awesome and one of the 3 best dry-aged steaks I ever had along with the ones from Pappas Bros and Tony's both down in Houston, TX. The Lady M Chocolate Cake for dessert at Keens is a must-try afterwards too.
truly fantastic review! i really enjoyed this a lot.
New viewer. I really enjoy your approach, content, and presentation.
Looks delicious UA! Love ur content 🙂
Thank you!
Wow, that mutton chop looked delicious! I'm a prime rib-eye kind of guy, but I'll make sure I go there with someone else so we can order both and split our entrees. Thanks for a great video!
Keen’s’s prime rib is the best prime rib you’ll ever have in the world, I go there every year for the prime rib and the Muttonchop. I dare say the prime rib is even better than the Muttonchop. My favorite steakhouse in NYC.
and another one! added to my list. keep up the amazing content UA!
Thanks for the kind words! I hope you enjoy it whenever you try it!
I love these videos!!
Great content, keep it up buddy🎉
Thanks! I'll keep doing my best!
I took my friends there for my birthday once and they still talk about it several years later. You might be tempted to get their steaks but don't be fooled. The mutton is the way to go. It's got a unique flavor that isn't too strong considering it's sheep. Their service and cocktails are great too.
I do not normally like mint jelly but their mint jelly pairs perfect with the mutton chop
Great video UA , really enthusiastic, honest and
sincere.Thank you.
Oh ..is that Louis CK at 7.55 ?
Keens Bar is my Office away from my Office, the menu is old fashioned by design, my favorite Steakhouse in the City
Yes I'm glad they kept menu items from decades ago. The mint jelly wasn't for me personally but it was definitely interesting!
Going to keens next Friday. I can’t wait to Try the mutton chop. But I’ll definitely get the half size . Thanks for the review
Keens is great. A real time capsule. Pro Tip UA. Always put jelly on plate and dip mutton into it. By placing a spoonfull on a bite it is too much.
Good job UA!! If I ever visit Keens, Mutton Chop will definitely be dish to try.
Yep it's the signature dish there. I really enjoyed it!
nice meal there UA....u have to start eating more so we get more videos lol
good video mate, possible to do some food cart videos as well?
love from Australia
Yes I definitely want to do more food cart videos! I actually made a video several months ago about my favorite food cart in NYC. Here if you're interested! ua-cam.com/video/Wmke3Lj_xMI/v-deo.html
I recently discovered your channel - you give great reviews. Question - if you were only going to eat one classic steak house meal in NYC, which restaurant would you choose? Thanks.
really enjoys this content , I will definitely want to try that is I ever went to the US :D keep up the great content UA
It's a good spot! And $68 is a lot but you can definitely share it, or pay $28 for a smaller piece. Where are you based now jw?
@@uaeats Egypt , part of my family are US immigrants and they are trying to seduce me to come for a vacation in the US with such videos , TBH I am sold 😂
Wow what a great find I never knew about the place I love lamb that monster muttons Chop look awesome definitely a split and the veggies on the side look like baby bok choy and some Chinese cabbage all cooked up looked wonderful if that's what it was DeMent jelly I can pass on! What an awesome meal it's on my list great review and a great find
The mint jelly wasn't for me but I can see other people liking it. It did really cut back the meatiness of the mutton. I overall enjoyed Keens!
The mint jelly is good but not essential
Britsih dude here. Our Sunday Roast dinners with lamb have always been served with a mint sauce or mint jelly. Perfect combination! I'll have to try Keens when I get to visit NYC.
You must try the Prime Rib, kings cut. It is RIDICULOUSLY good
I'll try it! Thanks for the rec!
Another great video
The mint jelly was added for those gamey legs of lamb for those who don't like the gamey flavor.
Yum looked amazing no mint jelly for me your reviews are great
Hi UA, can you categorize your videos by which city you went to? It'll be a great reference for food destinations.
Excellent video. Keens sounds great. Gotta save up for that place though.
Large groups tip more. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
Yep my thoughts exactly. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Can't wait to see this.... That's one of my favorites!
Sounds like a lot of people are big fans of this place. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for being early!
@@uaeats Keens is classic NYC!
Great restaurant was there in September. Had the mutton chop it was fantastic. The Bar is great too for a.pre.or.post meal drink.
Looks amazing
Insiders tip: The pub menu (in the pub only) is the best deal in NYC. The filet skewers are insane.
Well done UA! Excellent review! That was a massive piece of meat. Looking forward to your next review. Keep up the great work! 👍
It was indeed enormous. I had very tasty leftovers. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
The mutton is actually lamb. But man, is it good! One of the best pieces of meat ever. Nothing old-school about mint jelly with lamb. And Keene's mint jelly is the best ever -- so much better than the electric green stuff in the supermarket.
Love your videos man... Keep at it... 😉💯💯☘️🍎#33
You have to try their ribeye steak, even though they're traditionally known for their Mutton, most reviewers say that their Ribeye is the best in NYC.
I think you put too much of them and jelly on it it's supposed to have just a little drop it's supposed to be like a little kiss of mint sweetness
I'll try that next time! It was indeed a very strong mint flavor so that makes sense
I’ve eaten there before. A lot of jelly is fine. It’s more of a British or Australian culture thing.
@@uaeats we've all done that, the reason mint sauce/jelly is made with vinegar is to cut through the fattiness and richness of lamb/ mutton. And in the UK mutton used to be served with a caper sauce.
That solo dining issue is somehow a New York thing. Had similar experience in a few places, especially steak houses. You never feel that in UK
Great video love mutton at keens.
Every time i go to Keen’s I think I’m gonna order a steak, but I always end up ordering a mutton chop. It’s amazing.
Always wanted to order this. Next time I'm in NYC, gotta hit Keens.
Mint jelly is a classic pairing with lamb and mutton.
I definitely can see what they had in mind!
Darn! I just missed you! I was there the 12th around 7pm. I didn’t care too much for the mint. But wow! It was so good. The day before paid $138 for a porterhouse for 2 and i didn’t like it as much as as much as the mutton. 🤤
Service was also not the best for me dinning alone
Love you, UA!
I love you all too!
If you eat at Keens’ bar even as a solo diner you will receive excellent service. Manolo, head bartender, is fantastic. They also have one of the largest collections of Scotch in the western hemisphere.
Try the Prime Rib at Smith and Wollensky next!
Thanks for the rec!
I'm glad you liked! I've eaten at Keens many times, and 95% of the time this is what I get! So it's basically 2 sections or halves of the tenderloin still on the bone, with the chain still attached. The chain is my favorite part!
It was very tasty! Anything else you'd recommend from Keens?
@UA Eats Honestly, the reason I go is the mutton! The Old Homestead in the West Village is another steakhouse from the late 1800... That's often my go-to for a steak, and their oysters Rockefeller.
One of the best pieces of meat I ever had.
That bread sounded delicious 👌
It had a great crust!
Keen's was always great, I loved the Mutton there.
UA is on a mission to review every famous restaurant in NYC!
You're not wrong!
Keens is truly a NY institution and a great steakhouse. You can keep your Peter Luger’s!
Some years ago - I had a discussion with a waiter and the chef de cuisine there - questioned where they got mutton since it’s nearly impossible to find mutton in the US. They confessed it was yearling (lamb)
Went here for my Birthday. Food is excellent
Subscribed.
Should be quite mouthwatering!! Have not been in years ( n years) !
Hopefully it will be just the way you remembered it!
Tried to get a reservation my last time in the city but couldn’t get a reservation. I’ve heard you have to get the mutton chop the first time
Pro tip from a guy(me) who eats the mutton chop 3 to 4 times a year. Have the kitchen cut the chop for you. It will save you time and let's you eat and converse.
Thanks for the tip!
Best damn steak and mutton in the city- Lugers is great but KEENS hands down is the best I've had...
In England we call that a Barnsley Chop loin and fillet (like 2 t-bone together)😋
Wow i love how u reply to comments
Keens is the best 👍
Looks like the flavouring / syrup of gingerale is at bottom of glass. Did you mix it then try it?
ive had the mutton chop and mint jelly at keens. Its good to just drop the entire mint jellly on top of the meat and let it sit.
I have to try eating there soon.
My fave steakhouse in NY. Try the Prime Rib next time
Did you know? Saying „to each their own“ repeatedly is considered a crime over here in germany.
If I had a choice of a steak or this, I might take this! I love lamb. It's my favorite food. I like lamb shwarma on a laffa which is a lot less expensive.
I still prefer steak but this mutton chop was a great experience. I'd say it was better than 95% of steaks I've had!
Looks proper.
Brutal show
UA = Trailblazer!!! Won't STIR drink when painfully obvious it should. Won't use knife to slice dinner bread roll. Lazily uses knife to butter exterior bread roll! GOAT!
Mint gelly and sheep is very common in the Commonwealth. Thx
did you take it to go ?
I’m going to that place. Man that looks amazing…..
My absolute favorite place to eat in NY.
The mutton chop is good but the prime rib is by far the best thing on the menu
No Adidas cap. First I seen your hair, nice hair cut.👍
Mint jelly with lamb or mutton is traditional.
Also you're supposed to cut the roll open or rip it open and then butter the inside.
how many oz is that?
Big Keen’s fan.
My favorite meat dish ever!!!
It was very tasty!
That is a gorgeous cut of meat (never thought I'd say that)
