Is This 100 YEAR OLD Hot Dog Stand Worth The Hype? Walter's Hot Dogs Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 чер 2024
- Walter's Hot Dog Stand in Westchester County, NY is one of the most famous hot dog stands in the entire country. Also known as Walter's Hot Dogs, the stand has been running since 1919 and is known for its unique Ancient Chinese pagoda architecture. It is a neat example of the roadside architecture era of the early 20th century and the building is so beautiful that Walter's Hot Dogs is a National Register of Historic Places designated national landmark by the US government.
However, Walter's Hot Dog Stand in Mamaroneck is not just famous for its unique building. The food is by far the most famous aspect of this restaurant. Many people say Walter's Hot Dogs is the best hot dog in America, or at least the best hot dog in New York state and the best hot dog in NYC area. The hot dogs are split grilled, consisting of a unique blend of pork, beef, and veal, various spices, and grilled in a secret sauce. The result? People say it is hands down the best hot dog in the world.
Is Walter's Hot Dog Stand really all it's cracked up to be? Or is it all overrated hype mostly because the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior? We'll find out together!

Another great review. Laughed at you calling Westchester Upstate NY. Upstaters will tell you you have to be north or west of Albany to make that distinction. Do really like the channel and always look forward to your next port.
The hot dog is the only foodstuff where the more mutilated, split, sliced up, diced up, spiral cut, hacked to pieces, overcooked, charred, burnt, blistered and unrecognizable it is, the more delicious it becomes somehow. Lately I've become addicted to homemade Nathan's hot dogs cut on a bias on both sides and air-fried til crispy and bubbling, but these look like some dogs worth traveling for.
Dude you ate Tina's hot dog!😂
and Tina ate his later 😂
As someone who went to Mamaroneck High School -- just across the street from Walter's -- I can fairly say I've eaten more there than anyone else who subscribe to you, a legacy of eating hot dogs that goes so far back the stand was barely 50 years old when I first ate there. Back then, the menu was more limited, the marketing non-existent and the only place to get those incredible hot dogs was at the original stand -> this was decades before food trucks became a thing. Former residents of Mamaroneck were known to drive hours to return to eat.
You aced two of your choices, the standard hot dog and curly fries, both standouts for many decades. On the shake front, back when I lived there, there was just one type and if was thick -- they put six scoops of chocolate ice cream into each chocolate milk shake, and the richer, chocolate flavor matched perfectly with the curly fries and hot dogs.
The location across from the high school made it even more of an institution as students would line up during lunch breaks. My favorite time to go was before Saturday afternoon football games in the fall. In the many years since I left Mamaroneck -- and I left for good in the mid-1990s -- I run into other alum who are either much older or younger than me but we share in common the bond of Walter's: everyone still craves them.
For those who don't know Mamaroneck, it's a community with harbors on the Long Island Sound halfway between NYC and Connecticut. It was also Hollywood before Hollywood --> the original film studios were in NY and not LA and many of the stars and major producers and directors bought homes in a ritzier part of town called the Manor. It's a 35 minute train ride to Grand Central Station and so a popular place for those who work in Manhattan to live.
As for pronunciation, the word is a Native American name translated as "the place where the sweet waters fall into the sea" and we locals pronounce it "Muh-MARrow-Neck" with the emphasis on the second syllable. The other long-standing must-eat there is Sal's Pizzeria, especially their Sicilian slices.
Thank you for your interesting comment; unusually well-written and literate.
Top tier youtube comment, super informative and enhancing the enjoyment of the video in question
Afaik, Sal's is as gone as Tung Hoy.
tl/dr
First Hollywood was in Astoria, Queens. It's quite possible they vacationed and/ or lived out there.
UA You do some of the best reviews in the business
Thank you!

I watch dozens of food channels. Yours is definitely the most relaxing. Keep it up UA 👊💥
Love all your reviews. Great Job.
Dude no ketchup on hot dogs!!!!
It’s not a Chicago dog
Yep! You need to come out towards Chicago or any surrounding area! The best!!
Just started watching you about a week ago and you quickly became one of my favorite channels to watch … thank you for the great content!!!!
His facial expressions confuses me, after taking a bite it looks like he's disgusted but then he says it's the best hotdog that he's ever had. Lol.
Still young and still learning.
He is Chinese bro….thats his face
First time lol
Looks great UA! Thanks for uploading.
Whenever I've cooked on a flat top I've always split hot dogs down the middle and I've never heard of Walter's until now. I also add x cross score marks that look great after grilling. Doing both helps the heat penatrate to the middle of the hot dog.
Just got home from a long day and when I saw your post I was psyched to watch something wholesome that could take my mind off everything......Keep up the good work thanks
Nice video, informative, hot dogs and fries looked good! Enjoyed the watch!
I enjoyed your video very much. I love going to Mamaroneck, but I've never heard of Walters Hotdogs. Will have to check it out. Thank you for sharing 🎉🎉🎉🎉
UA I loved how you said" Mean Hot Dogs" thats how everyone I grew up with in Bklyn said when we describe good food. Like yo they have some "Mean a.. Burgers, Pizza, Sandwiches, Hot Dogs etc
Good looks UA love your food reviews. Wish many of the local spots I grew up eating at still were around for you to have tried. Especially this Cuban-Asian place that sadly closed long ago.
Thanks UA , I can’t wait to go on your journey thru the culinary industry
UA you are such a cool dude. Thanks for your reviews!
Awesome video. Love the texture on those curly fries. So good
I love Walter’s, I love your reviews. Pro Tip- if a town is 17 miles away from Manhattan it’s not “upstate New York” lol ;). Keep the awesome content coming!
The old joke is for Big Apple residents, Upstate New York is anything north of 125th St.
Much appreciated content you put as much gusto in it for a hot dog as you do a 5* steakhouse
Great review UA! This definitely my kinda spot since I prefer grilled dogs over steamed. Not to mention that mustard looked fantastic too.
I love Westchester County!
That hot dog looks EXCELLENT
I hit Notify Me for the Premiere!
I'm curious about the funnel cake sticks - for dessert
I think you ATE Tina's hot dog!
What else did you order?
Nice drive!
UA, this is another excellent review.
Yes, a garbage plate episode would be great! Also hot dogs at Ted’s (Buffalo), Dogtown (Rochester) and Heid’s (Syracuse). You Could even make a Buffalo wings and beef on weck episode for an ultimate road trip! Love the videos!
Need to start planning this road trip!
I agree Western NY has great hot dogs. Rochester = White Hots, Red Hots at Bill Gray's and the Garbage Plate at Nick Tahou's. Buffalo has Ted's with amazing char-grilled foot long hot dogs.
Add spiedies at Lupo's (Binghamton) to the list [get the lamb].
No! Do not do a video on garbage plates. There are enough of them and it's schlock, crap Americana gluttonous shame. If you want a cheeseburger, go to classic chrome diner and have a quality one. Don't pile on the burger, macaroni cheese, tater tots, baked beans, cole slaw, split hot dogs all squirted with mustard and ketchup. If you want a hot dog, you get a quality one like Walter's with a side of beans or cole slaw, not the cheap quality meat in a garbage plate with all of the other cheap stuff.
@@riproar11 hey, save judgement until you’ve tried it. I can tell by your commentary you haven’t yet.
Love that you didn’t do a count down to primer the video!! Another great review UA! ❤
Big up Tina man supporting the team
It's pronounced ma-maron-neck. Thanks so much for the incredible reviews! You really give a thorough analysis of the food which most others don't do. Your videos helped me find great food.
Quality can be hit or miss at Walters. Seems like they have taken some shortcuts like that milkshake (maybe a mix instead of real ice cream). Double dog with mustard please! Great review UA!
Good to know and I agree the milkshake was disappointing
@@uaeats I hope you agree the real disappointment is saying fries don't go with mustatd but it's ok to order milkshake with a hotdog 😂
Love your choice of music! Another great video!
Thank you for introducing nice hot dog stand!
Your word is gold UA 💯
I like your music! Matches your channel
nice review
I used to work in town, this was was amazing. The split is the best idea ever for a hot dog. Makes a hot dog more charred burger like than soft water dog.
Looks good! Hope you can make it to Johnny’s Hot Dogs in Buttsville, NJ along Rt 46 near the Water Gap.
Love the video but Albany, Poughkeepsie, Schenectady and north are “upstate” - not Westchester which is a 30 min drive from NYC lol
The hot dog, when split in the middle is called butterflied.
The way to pronounce the town is "ma-MAAR-ahn-eck"
Very decent prices! I will have to remember this place if I ever venture that side of the country again.
Yes very reasonable! Except the milkshake
The plain hotdog looks great! Yumm!
UA FYI, Mamaroneck, New York is not “upstate New York” it’s Westchester County . The closest county to New York City, the Bronx. They are delicious hotdogs. It really helps that they split the dog. You should get a double hotdog on one bun.
Terrific Dogs UA! Great review! The dogs are made specially for them and the mustard contains a small amount of relish. Unlike any other dogs. No other toppings. No Kraut or red onion sauce. You did what we all have done, driven for over an hour in traffic for a Walter’s Dog! Happy NY! NealyB
Disagree. The fried, browned sauerkraut makes all hot dogs taste sublime, especially the ones served at stadiums or NYC street carts.
I've always like sauerkraut on my dogs, especially ROSOFF kraut in a 24 0z.glass jar that was made in BOSTON, Mass........Anyhow the company was sold to a MIAMI Corp. and now they are out of business.......
Great review. Did Tina get to try the puffy dog?
I went to Mamaroneck High School from 83-87. It's the brick building across the street. Walters was a go to all my young life. There was never any sitting area with tables - that is new. Used to eat the dogs sitting on the grass hill across the street. Mustard has itsy bits of relish. Dogs are exclusively made for Walter's. Very greasy. I used to buy 20 in the summer and bring back for everyone at work - grease would be dripping. Now that I am much older, I miss the days when I could eat this stuff and not worry. Unique throw back. Also, this expanded menue was never there in the old days. No food trucks EVER. Times have changed. BTW: This is NOT upstate NY. Mamaroneck is 20 miles north of Manhattan. Go Tigers!
Tina’s ponytail is beautiful!
Poor Tina, all she got to try was the curley fries I believe. You ate the hot dogs! Hopefully you squared things away and got her something else from the menu selection. But once again, totally enjoyed your review. Excellent job. You need to make the drive down to the Philadelphia Area and do some reviews in our area.
Sharing puffy dogs is the very definition of love!
Ue definitely shared his puffy dog with Tina that night.
I am def taking a drive soon, to Walters. I like Duck Donuts in Mamaroneck
Since Joe DeCicco of DeCicco & Sons married Katharine Woodward of Walter’s Hot Dogs, it is not surprising that
Walter's Hot Dogs are available at all DeCicco & Sons locations and I understand these to be uncooked and packaged for you to take home and cook.
Def familiar with the Rutgers grease trucks. I grew up about 7 miles from NB.
UA = best reviewer on UA-cam.
I love hot dogs and I understand that some brands are much better than others, but it's the chili that each establishment has to offer than makes them stand out. I wouldn't even think of ordering a hot dog without the special recipies of chili each place has.
Upstate NY...Mamaroneck is 14 miles from NYC(The Bronx) fyi
Next time you're in LA, try Pink's and Carney's.
i live in winston salem n.c...and there is a place called pulliams hotdogs thats been family owned for 114 years...good as heck
Ann's Dairy Cream, Glen Burnie MD, just outside Marley Station. The Mexican restaurant across the street, Plaza Garibaldi, is also excellent.
Best hotdogs.I like regular fries .Shakes are great.Best mustard by the way.
UA you always make me hungry.
heyyy i love in that area and i go to the highschool and let me tell u if y ever visit u have to get walters!!
Walter’s Mustard only next time. And it goes well with the Potato Puffs, like mini knish.
You will be back!
Walter's is the best. I get the double dog with Walter's mustard.
I recommend Super Duper Winnie in Fairfield CT as another great hot 🌭 dog stand. They are known for all the house-made toppings.
“Can I try a bite of your puffy dog later” 😂😂😂😂 out of context that doesn’t sound too right. Hahah
That face when your chewing is hilarious!!
UA if you arevever in Vegas or California try DIRT DOG. Also TY for not letting the food get cold.
The prices are reasonable, seems awesome
nothing beats a costco dog...
Legendary Westchester location there homemade mustard is the spiciest and there pretzel buns are divine
*...location. Their homemade mustard...their pretzel buns..
I just love to watch your expression on your first bite of anything. I’m there
Honey Mustard and Fries are a good combo!
They are for someone that doesn't order milkshake with a hotdog 😂, I know exactly what you mean
Hot dog, fries, onion ring. Varsity in Atl or Athens, GA. Cannot go jun.... than that as far as I know. And don't forget frosted orange. Both together is such a guilty pleasure. But some how, I don't feel guilty. It is a treat, well, once in a while.
Nice
Mamaroneck isn’t considered upstate New York. It used to have a great hot dog restaurant on the Post Road call Cooks. A favorite place when I was a kid.
Wish pats hubbas was still open for u to explore
Raleys hotdog stand, Fairfield, Connecticut can’t go wrong buddy👍
💜 Happy New Year 🌀
beef-pork and veal dogs from Boar's Head to their specs, when I was in school [up the hill] in the early 60's, the dogs were 15 each/ two for 25 cents supermarket Boar's Head pork/beef dogs a close second
Have you gone to the first hamburger play in Connecticut? I went with my family in 2015, I think it's in Stamford Connecticut. The line was long, the wait was long. But the burgers were amazing!!! Not your typical burger and Do Not Ask For Ketchup!!!!
Ma-mar-o-neck. 😂 Not upstate NY. This is my Walter’s order: a double dog with Walter’s hot dog mustard (it’s mixed with pickle relish), potato puffs on the side. Summers in the suburbs!
The plain dog is supposed to be flat. For some inexplicable reason you folded the dog over so it was double thickness with excess bun. For a good hot dog explore NJ. Plenty of fantastic Texas Weiners. And Rutts Hutt.
i feel like these hotdogs, the old school ones with pork/beef hybrid are like what jersey pork roll is. good in their own way especially with the char/maillard.
why is ur name UA? love your vids! been binging them

Some of the best
Rutt’s Hut, Clifton, N.J is a must.
The regular hot dog looks great. There are lots of different mustards but it’s hard to improve on Heinz ketchup. Curly fries look good too. Pass on the milk shake.
ive gone to walters probably 200 times in my life, easily the best hot dog ive ever had, and its not even close, also the ice cream is amazing, they make it themselves. P.S, pretzel bun is the way to go
Come to Florida! I need to find a good hotdog and pastrami sandwich place down here.😊
those dogs look legit!
Love your content but just for future referenceanywhere in the NYC area is not considered Upstate. Upstate is Albany Syracuse Rochester Buffalo and anywhere north of that!
UA happy new year
Can you imagine UA in Utica, trying authentic chicken riggies? I'd made a huge batch and eat it while watching the vid!
Dickie Dee's in Newark, NJ or Jimmy Buff's now in West Orange.🤜🏿🤛🏾😊
Hanks Frank’s on route 46 in Lodi are the best hotdogs on the planet… They are Serette hotdogs and they come with just about any type of topping or toppings you want… I’m in my 60s and I’ve been eating there since I was playing baseball, football, and basketball in Hasbrouck Heights when I was Ages 6 to 17… the next time I come up to New Jersey we have to get some hotdogs… at Hanks Frank’s❤
Not Serette. Sabrett hotdogs.
You should try to check out ANCHOR BAR in Buffalo, NY. It's the home of the Buffalo Wings. I've never been but I would definitely check it out if I'm ever in the Buffalo, NY area.
Not even the people who live in Buffalo want to be in Buffalo.
Anchor Bar is a highly overrated tourist trap and disappointing as many videos show. Some of the top places are Duff’s Famous Wings, Gabriel’s Gate, Gene McCarthy’s, Bar-Bill Tavern, etc.
Hiram’s? Rutt hut?
If you are in Mamaroneck - do a review of Sals pizza too!
Nice review UA. Try without the ketchup next time. Walter’s dogs are so good less is definitely more.
Happy New Year my Friend #mattdv
Rutt's Hut in Clifton!
My favorite hot dog in the world is the Elote Dog from Dirt Dog. They have locations in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I dream about that hot dog. Their loaded fries are also dream worthy.
did bourdin show this as well?
