  • Sharp-tailed Grouse populations are just one of the wildlife species being monitored through our WMA pilot projects at both our Langruth and Broomhill WMA sites. Over time, if left unmanaged/disturbed, grassland habitat gets overgrown with shrubs and woody vegetation, removing the juxtaposition that species like the sharp-tailed grouse rely on for their various needs, such as food, cover and nesting habitat. Using land management activities such as mowing shrubs and implementing rotational cattle grazing, the WMA pilot projects aim to reduce the amount of shrubs and brush in the WMAs, restoring grassland habitat in order to provide a more productive environment for wildlife species.
Sharp-tailed grouse are a highly sought after harvestable species falling under the Upland Game Bird Season and Regulations. Hunting season opens for sharp-tails on September 1st, 2022 for GBHZ 1 & 2 and September 8th, 2022 for GBHZ 3 & 4.
