- One of 10 species of grouse native to North America, seeing the secretive Ruffed grouse, can be a little difficult. In fall though you may spot one balancing on limbs of alders as they forage buds or you may hear one in the morning drumming. The name “ruffed” comes from the long, shiny, black or chocolate colored neck feathers that are most prominent on the male.

First time I ever heard the drumming was my first time deer hunting in northern Michigan.
My senses were so focused on my surroundings, I actually questioned my sanity! Had no clue what I was hearing, or *thought* at the time what I was hearing.
Now I just love it.
I can relate to your thoughts back then because when I first heard I was convinced it was someone trying to start up a vehicle or something. Thanks for watching. Have a great night 🐦🙂
FYI. Wisconsin here. I know this bird well as to the fact of when I was younger, I hunted them and was quite successful. Now that I have aged, I enjoy just watching them. They come to my feeder and dad's feeder but not too often. They seem nervous when coming to our feeders but at other times when I spot them on the side of the road eating grit, they seldom move and just walk away but not right away. When they are in the woods, they are next to impossible to see unless/until they move. Growing up, we had one on the farm that wasn't afraid of humans and would come up to you. Yes, he was wild and this lasted for about 4 months and then he was gone. (We didn't shoot him)

I've heard them since childhood here in British Columbia. I've always marvelled at how loud that thumping is and how far it carries. It's all part of the songs of Mother Earth to me now as an adult.
Here in Canada I've been hearing their lovely drumming almost every morning and sometimes it happens all day long! At first I thought my neighbors were having trouble starting their tractors lol. Such a lovely creature.
The ruffed grouse is Pennsylvania's state bird. I used to see and them often, but not as much over the last 35 years. I miss the drumming.

Ever since I was a kid, ruffed grouse have visited my parents backyard every winter. We spread mixed bird seed and cracked corn on the ground to attract juncos, but ruffed grouse will eat it too. They'll even scratch the ground like chickens if the snow falls and covers the seeds we put out for them. The most ruffed grouse we've seen together in the backyard was a winter flock of 14 birds.

I had no idea it was a grouse and because I was trying to record a video of chickadee sounds I got a little annoyed thinking it was someone trying to start their bike over and over. I guess my Wye County rough grouse was greyish near Edmonton Alberta. They are very good at hiding.
Habitat is everything for Grouse, find that and you'll find them. Look for Alder/Birch thickets in low spots surrounded by scrubby hardwoods with Hemlock stands nearby. Old, grown up pastures are best for year round habitat, but you can find them on cut over woodland that has come back into berries and fruiting shrubs as well. You'll flush them by walking by long before you'll learn to spot them sitting.

Fun fact: The Ruffed Grouse is the state bird of Pennsylvania. I loved learning about the interesting adaptive traits these birds acquire in the winter. I found the fact that northern populations might stay buried and hidden deep in the snow all day and all night to digest their food to be really cute! I can only imagine what that looks like. 🥰 I think gamefowl (grouse, turkeys, quails, ptarmigans, capercaillie, peafowl, junglefowl, etc.) to be really fascinating birds. I only recently realized that there were so many species of ptarmigan (some of which have really pretty plumage, like the Ruffed Grouse), and I’m excited to learn more about them. The Ruffed Grouse is such a fascinating bird! I saw on the map that they live in western Maryland, so maybe I'll get to see one some time. It is pretty amazing how they are able to live in very harsh climates. It is also cool how they eat poisonous plants. Thanks for the nice video! Happy fall birding too!

I live out in the country with a small wooded area, near a small river, there is always a few of them near by, I often hear them drumming and see them when out and about. We have Ruff Grouse, Sharp tail Grouse and Hungarian Partridge around here.

came across a female nesting this spring while on a walk , i didn't realize i was so close to her and all of a sudden she jumped out of her nest whimpering like a little puppy , flapping her wings and running around frantically , to cute
That is too cute! 🥰 There is something adorable about a bird whimpering like a puppy. Blue Jays sometimes sound like this, too.

I remember the first time I heard the drumming and no idea what it was. Such an unusual sound! I think it is so interesting how quickly the babies can get out of the nest. I guess when the nest is relatively unprotected, it makes sense to get up and leave it!
as an avid upland game bird hunter, this video gives so much amazing context to these beautiful and mysterious birds. much respect i have for these amazing bush chickens. this year has been very bountiful for them, as the drier summer allowed a second brood to be viable. there are many little ones running around that i enjoy just watching, hoping theyll survive the winter so they may provide next years harvest be bountiful. the relationship between a hunter and his prey should be one of great respect, appreciation, and gratitude for the harvest. a hunters role is to be a steward of the land above all else, as our source of nourishment relies on it for generations to come, but also from a place of conservation, so all these magnificent aves be enjoyed and appreciated by all. long have i been fascinated by the grouse family, worldwide they are so various and diverse they are truly amazing. so beautiful and elegant and full of wonder to the eye. truly a special creature i will forever treasure and be grateful for in many ways. thank you for this wonderful education content, and keep up the amazing work!❤

When I was a child my mother took me to a Audubon film series and one of them was on the grouse. However this grouse was found in middle America on the plains. They really are a remarkable bird and I love that drumming!
I saw one in northern New Jersey at the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge. It just stood so still and I just walked on by and it was so beautiful and timid. So glad I go to see one

On the dirt road to my property in northern Michigan I saw a grouse getting ready to cross so I sat down in the brush at the edge and a flock slowly walked out and crossed close enough that I could hear them quietly calling to each other, something I never heard before and until then didn't know they did.

One of my concerns is, in rural areas the domestic cat is an unnatural predator and is more devastating to their population than we know. Yet there are too many cat lovers that will not believe this is happening. I used to hear the grouse on my farm until some folks from the city moved here so there dogs could run. Sorry to be just negative but Iv`e seen it.
Its understandable to feel the way you are. I'm a cat lover but always keep mine indoors , better for their health and good for the wildlife. It bothers me when a lot when I see cats roaming around here especially since I see the kills from them. Its heartbreaking and is a real problem. I believe that there are documentaries that showed how much of a problem it is.

I live in Northern Ontario and these birds regularly wander around our property and will even come up onto our deck or sit on a window sill! Love hearing the drumming in the forest behind our home. Great video to learn more about these “forest chickens” (as my daughter has named them:)!

I always assumed ruffed grouse were only found further north, but your video and map taught me they are in my area, though I'll most likely need to look for them outside of the city of Toronto in wooded areas. My favorite upland game bird that has been known to check your pacemaker when they fly up right at your feet as you walk. I also just enjoy watching them in our orchard hopping from tree to tree eating buds. What an awesome bird
I have never been startled by a ruffed grouse in the winter but several times in spring and fall, I have been startled by one suddenly bursting into flight. They are very well camouflaged so I don't know how many times I have walked near one and haven't even see it. Lovely birds that add interest to the environment.
I remember years ago when I stumbled across a nest without realizing it and the female burst up in the air just a couple feet in front of me! It gave me quite the heart attack! I was amazed to see so many eggs in the nest. I think it was around 12-15. Unfortunately they’ve been extirpated from my area so I rarely get to see them.

Ah I had a big green space where I lived for ate teen yrs, I never heard him drumming and would only see them in the winter coming for seed, a flock of eight which seemed to be their constant number.

This is an excellent video. Ruffed grouse are such a magnificent bird. When I was in my teens I saw one drumming once. Very cool. As I grew older I had them scare the s*&t out of me many times by exploding out from the snow or from their hiding place as I walked by. What a thrill!

I remember Spring Turkey hunting and listening to these guys drumming their beats throughout the forest. I only saw 3 or 4 during my time in that part of the woods, they're so well camouflaged
This was Western Marylnd, pretty much the southern edge of their range
Nothing like trying to sneak through the woods,floating over the forest duff not making a sound,scanning cautiously ahead for whatever your quarry might be...Stopping to scan ahead,and BAM!! One bird you're unknowingly about 4 feet from in a brush tangle explodes out of it,sending your heart out of your mouth LOL
We are in Northern N.H. And are fortunate to have them around us. Love the drumming sound! I’ve been startled more than once walking through our woods, never in winter though. Neatest thing I ever saw pertaining to Ruffed Grouse was when I came upon a mom going over our stone wall with chicks. They all hopped over and disappeared quick, but one little guy was slow, I looked at him, he looked at me, then he grabbed a leaf that was in front of him and flipped over on his back with the leaf totally hiding him! That sure did make my day! Thanks Lesley for another informative video!😁🪶🪶🪶
You can hear grouse drumming at midnight or 3am during the summer, they be crazy about it. Birch, poplar, hazelnut, thornapple, acorns and clover is favored habitat but we see them in swamps and pines, too.
And they do indeed bury themselves in snow drifts when it gets really cold, they just fly right into the stuff.
And, lastly, I say this with all respect- they are delicious...
Hahhaha the last part made me laugh because it reminded me of my dear sweet grandpa, he hunted them and he knew how much I loved birds and the Ruffed Grouse so he would always tease saying that they taste good. Great video with awesome shots of foraging! I had a hen chase after me (she likely had a nest just inside of the brush along the road.) I also came upon a hatchling that sounded like a chipmunk- looking to my right I noticed mama with several other chicks! So well camouflaged I didn't see them until I was almost on top of them! 😀

The only time I’ve seen grouse was in a snow covered country side as I headed south in southern Minnesota just west of Minneapolis. It was such a thrill. I watch many of your videos and am a life long bird watcher usually spending summer and fall in northern Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota. I am curious to know generally your whereabouts as so much of your fauna and flora are similar to my haunts. Thanks for having your sight. I end up sharing your sight with a sister in Mexico and she and her eight year old grand son get to watch together. He is wild about animals...everything from insects to birds, bats, opossums, short tailed weasels, black bears and coyotes, all of which he’s seen on his visits to northern Wisconsin.
I often hear the drumming when going for a walk to my family camp, up until now I thought it was an engine starting! Great video!

But of course that means you're spending a LOT of time with birds! Keep up the great work. I'm in the eastern Arizona mountains, and we get Dusky (formerly Blue) Grouse, and yes, they surprise the heck out of us when we get too close and can't see them. Such incredible birds; the feathers of all the gallinaceous birds are so spectacular.

Crazy I’ve never heard of their diet! I thought only the Hoatzin bird ate primarily plants. I’d love to see or hear a Ruffed Grouse one day. They are cute with that little crest and the way the walk. ☺️
They scratch like chickens too- lots of bugs and worms eaten for sure, but in winter they survive on tree buds mostly.
I love grouse. We have two kinds here in Wyoming. Some people say three. But I think a Ruff grouse is the same as a blue grouse. And the Sage grouse on the prairies here. Which I hope to go watch in April on their leks. And get some pictures. Our Game and Fish dept has been protecting the grouse in our state and that makes me happy. When I learned grouse go to higher mountain elevation in the winter I was totally surprised. They are one tough bird. I wish they were our state bird. Always learn something new watching your videos Leslie. I never knew about the chicks!
I have one or more close to my home in Cape Breton.. The sound is more felt than heard. Drives this girl crazy! Can even hear it when the windows are closed.

While camping in the BWCA once I woke up to what sounded like some chickens. When I peeked out the tent there were several grouse walking through my campsite, pecking at the ground and softly making that brawwwwwk brwk brwk brwk brwk. Now, years later, I live in central Minnesota and every fall I see one foraging around the Hazelnut bushes in my back yard. Never see it any other time of year. It's always a pleasure, though.

I'm originally from Maine, these once we're my favorite game bird, I've seen an even mix of colors in these, they're very quick to get up and gone, I've only ever seen one displaying for a hen once in my life, was near Clingmans dome in the Smoky MTN national park such a nice show !!
Some of my most cherished memories as an adolescent are from trips to the forest to hear the males thumping and thudding . I have never been charmed by almost stepping on one in the snow ; haven’t seen one in ages they are masters of shadow and camouflage:-)

I love the rough grouse! I have not seen one in Lawrence County Pennsylvania since 2001. Just got back from a one week trip to our camp in vermont. Had 34 flushes in 4 1/2 days of hunting. Now the long year before I get to go back to Vermont and see another one
I didn't know much about them. I'm mostly familiar with the Prairie Chicken, which is the largest grouse in America. I've seen quail once running in a line like they show in movies, but never seen grouse.
The drumming sound is one of my favorites. It is so different from other birds. I love how you can hear them but not see them.

I live on the most eastern part of newfoundland on the Avalon peninsula and I’m pretty sure these guys are here year round! I see them all the time and now actually can usually hear one behind my house this time of year !

Tons of them here in Manitoba.. they will give you a heart attack .. Excellent camouflage and they fly away once almost stepped on. Some call them Fool's Hens here. (Correction Spruce grouse) they do similar things.
Yes they certainly do give ya a heart attack when they burst off. I never heard the name 'Fool's Hens' thanks for sharing that with me. Have a great njght

I won't say they're not here but I've wandered the Ozark woods for over 50 years and never heard or seen one. Used to be a lot of prairie chickens and they're bout gone. Same with quail. Thanks for the video. 🇺🇸

We were at the cottage a few weeks ago and while sitting around the fire at night we heard the drumming quite a few times in the woods.
We probably have them here in northern Washington but Ive never seen one. I hope I do some day! Thanks Lesley.
I befriended one of these in March 2020. I named her Penny the Pandemic Partridge! She eats from my hand, comes into my cabin, hangs out with me for an hour or two each time I'm there! Hard to believe? I have pictures and video!!
