As a 40+ woman I completely respect your viewpoint and am glad you are doing a makeup tutorial of any kind for those our age and older that would like to learn. However, I hold the firm belief that one should wear what makes them feel beautiful regardless of what is "age appropriate". If you feel beautiful, strong, sexy, confident, etc....rock the shit out of it friend! I LOVE glitter, sparkle, dark and bright colors, frosts, neons, and a lot of other "gaudy" make up on me. To me that is "grown ass woman" makeup and I own the hell out of it :)
I think you misunderstood what she was saying. She wasn't saying it was inappropriate for woman of a certain age to wear glitter or bright colors. She was saying. She felt it wasn't right for her, and if others were looking for guidance in what to choose because they too were not a fan of that look for them, then this was the thing to watch. She never implied that woman shouldn't wear those things if they are over 40. She very clearly stated that :)
Age appropriate depends on the individual. This goes for men as well as women. Don't take it personally. As we age physically we need to make the outer changes as well. That is the point I think Goldberg is making. At least that is part of what I have taken away from her video. You can rock anything you want but doing it right means a win for you.
Thanks for doing this series! I just turned 44 and only started playing around with high-end grown-up makeup about a year ago and now I am obsessed! I realized very quickly that shimmer is not my friend. I look forward to watching more from you.
So excited - I'm a GAW who loves make-up but doesn't want to look like she's trying to be a teenager! Just found you, and I think you're tutorial is great! It's been advised that I use only mattes because I'm older. But instinctively I knew something was wrong with that advice because my lids naturally look like they have a sheen on them. Flat matte looks strange, unnatural. You get it! I took lots of notes. : ). Thank you. I'll be following.
Yeah!!! I've been looking forward to this since you've announced it. I have decided to look better than ever when I turn 40 this year, and I'm so glad to also have your tips. Thanks so much, Marnie!
This was great! Hoping you do a tutorial with your perfect palette. Looking forward to this series! I am 34 and this is just what I needed. Classic looks that will never go out of style! Thanks, Caterina
Ok I'm gonna do a left turn from the pack and while I love the makeup shown I disagree with the attitude presented , basically women over forty are turned out into the makeup graveyard and beauty and fashion are no longer within our grasp. We should go quietly into the land of boring beige and matte bone !?!?!?! Is this really how you see this demographic ???? If so how very very depressing and sad !!!!! They can have my purples ,aqua , blue and glitter pigments when they pry it from my awesomely manicured dead hands while resting in my mirrored coffin!! I don't know about the rest of you but I'm vibrant alive and can NOW afford to live my life to the fullest unlike those twenty something's , I'm not gonna be sat in the corner in satin taupe and bone with clear gloss sorry ladies .......
You're allowed to disagree. Frankly, I don't think those loud, bright colors look particularly good on anyone at any age. This series is aimed at those who are new to makeup, and starting out with classic, neutral colors is a good way to go. Once they're comfortable with makeup and they want to branch out, that's their prerogative. Right now I'm rocking an acid purple eyeshadow as an accent with my "boring" beige and warm browns, but I also realize that for most women over 40, that's not a look that would be appropriate in their daily lives. At the end of the day, I just want women to feel beautiful in whatever way they want to express themselves.
MsGoldgirl As a 41 year old woman myself , I took no offense. I bought the Urban Decay Electric palette and use it and some other colorful shadows occasionally but I totally see why you did this series and I love it !! I love that you address issues that are age related ! Way to go YOU ! I have literally spent my morning with you ! Lol ! Keep these videos coming !!
I think matte shades and satin shades are ENHANCING and sophisticated. The rest are... the equivalent of putting colored stripes in your hair. You can do it, but dont expect it to be enhancing. It might give you a look, but it might not be enhancing. I think women usually use makeup to look more beautiful, but if you dont want to use it for that, ,then you would be using it for self expression I guess.
I LOVE the title of this series! Can't wait to see more recommendations. I totally agree with the matte browbone thing - I'm obsessed with MAC Brule which I use with all my palettes because, you're right, thats what most palettes are missing.
Love the name of this series! I've always loved makeup but even now in my 40's I struggle with what looks good and what to buy. So I thank you so much for all the research you do to help us girls out!
Great video, Marnie! As a life-long makeup lover, it wasn't until I found beauty videos on UA-cam that I learned the tricks to applying it well. This series will be helpful for so many of us. Great giveaway too! --Kirsten
Thank you for "teaching" me the basics. I'm the same age and just started to dip my toes in the makeup world. I look forward to the rest of the series! Thank you again for taking the time to do this. Josephine
One thing I took with me from working within the makeup industry, weddings especially but also selling a couple brands, is that when women start to get a "crepey" lid, they shy away from anything that isn't matte. Many women turning 40 or 50 now grew up with eyeshadow that was either SPARKLESVILLE or totally matte, and we have a lot of other options now but somewhere along the way, some magazine printed up that if you turn 30 you need to chuck anything with any kind of shimmer. Kevyn Aucoin passed so long ago but his wisdom is still so current in that a pearl or glow to the eyelids really looks wonderful and youthful on the lid and detracts from any crepey kind of texture, imparting a youthful luminosity to the skin and giving it life and playfulness. I'm glad you're doing this series because women over 40 were always my favorite clients, they just always seemed so much more in tune to what they did and did not want which was wonderful helping them to achieve.
I am in my early 30s and I am excited for this series. I'm glad to see videos that are for women that aren't in their teens. Looking forward to what other videos are to come. I also always feel overwhelmed when I walk by MAC and stick to other brands. Now I have some standards to look for when I try them.
Great video hun! I'm almost 50, have been wearing makeup almost daily since I was 17, and have been a makeup artist for 30 years. This was an AWESOME video! I have tons of friends who feel that, especially after 40, it is more difficult to wear makeup due to wrinkles, creases, sagging etc. You teach people, young and older, about the magic of makeup, what to do with it and the best ways to wear it. I'm going to recommend this video to my friends, THANK YOU!!
Hi Marnie! I am 48 years old and I have always worn makeup but in the last year or so I came across you and other beauty gurus and have come to LOVE makeup! It has become an obsession and its driving my husband crazy with all my Ulta receipts! I just never knew what looked good on me or where to place shadows. Anyway I love your videos and thank you for creating this series. I will definitely be watching!
Thank you so much for doing these videos! You are so right that there are so many of us women over 40 who are still learning how to wear makeup, which is me and I am having so much fun playing. I really enjoy all your videos!
Can I just say thank you for doing this. When you were describing the women at the beginning of your video who inspired this series, you might as well have been talking to me. This series is coming at the perfect time for me because I'm a grown ass woman who wants to learn how to look polished and professional. I'm just so overwhelmed by the choices and don't really know where and how to start. And who can you ask to help you with this stuff? Well, you. Thank you again. I'm really looking forward to your instruction and tips. And I REALLY appreciate your specific recommendations (with rationale), as well as the ability to click and buy. I also appreciate that you significantly limit the necessities. Thank you!
Great series Marnie...I know several "grown ass women" who do not wear makeup at all...I think aging women need to put a little on to make up for all the "losses" that happen with age...!!
I can't tell you how excited I am for this series. I'm 45 and love makeup but I'm always looking for tips from other women around my age. I just love your honesty and enjoy watching your vids!
I love this video! It is so refreshing to see someone closer to my age talking about grown up makeup! I love watching all if these 20 year olds talk about makeup but being almost 40 myself I look for something a little bit more age appropriate! Big thumbs up!
Omg!! I have to say.. This is probably the best and most informative makeup video I have seen on UA-cam! I am 41 and just in the past year and a half have really gotten into makeup. Wish you would have done this sooner! But better now than never right? Love how you just tell it like it is for us "grown ass women". I've watched lots of videos on makeup and most of the girls have not been in my age group. They've got lots of great tutorials and videos but let's face it.. I can't wear a lot of the makeup they do. Just so happy and excited that you started this series! Can't wait for the next video so this grown ass woman can get it right. And I'm so going to be buying the mac shades you've recommended through your link! Thanks again!
I'm so excited about this series, I'm 37 and have only grown to love and enjoy makeup over the past 2 years. Eyeshadow application is still very intimidating for me. I have a few of the popular palette's and they are pretty much untouched because I don't know how to use them. Thanks for sharing ideas for applying shadows. Looking forward to more tips for us grown women!
Really like the concept of this series. I have found many people like me, over 40, that for whatever reason had hung up the wearing of makeup. Now that I'm slowly getting back into it, I want to know what colors would look best for a woman of my age. I also appreciate you choosing different price points.
Love this series idea! Usually makeup starter kit videos are aimed at teens. I think it's great that you are giving us options from several price points. I like your shadow choices and placement suggestions as well. Thank you! I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.
Please bring this series back! I would really like to share this with some of my older friends who are new to makeup, and only want to use it for career poise! Thank you!
How exciting!! I think this series was made just for me. I am 54 and just started wearing makeup again and have been watching UA-cam videos to learn new techniques. Using new makeup helps me feel younger and prettier. I have always used skincare; just not makeup.
My perfect palette(s): drugstore, high quality, neutral, only three shades.. the Milani brow kits. They come in three versions so will compliment any skin tone (I have fair skin and actually have all three, light is cooler, medium is warmer, and dark does gorgeous smokey eyes)... each contain two matte browns, one light one dark and a shimmery highlight... super buttery pigmented shadows... also have a mini set of tools including a sponge tip applicator, angled brush, and tweezers. They are also fabulous on the brows so you get two for one. If you want a matte for browbone (or all matte look) I suggest WnW 's single in Brulee. These have a permanent spot in my makeup tray, they do gorgeous eyes alone and also make the perfect companion palettes to complete any eye look paired with any single shadow or palette.
NYX Love in Paris or Love in Rio series of palettes may suit your needs for ideal palette. The Rio palettes are trios while the Paris palettes are 9-pan. They have a couple of sets with the bone highlight, light shimmer lid color, light brown transition shade, and dark brown crease/liner.
The best part of this video was how excited you are about doing it! The reason many of us hardly-wear-make-up women watch you is that it's fun watching someone who is so passionate and happy in their work. It inspires me to go do more of the work that I do. By the way, I'm now a Californian but also was raised in Chicago like you. It's also very fun when one of your dogs comes into the shot! The girls are so cute and Bosley is very handsome.
Love this series. I'm 54 and I went through a stage where I barely wore eye shadow and now I'm back into it. I loved it when I was younger and then when my eyes started drooping and skin started getting loose, I felt eye shadow looked horrible on me. Now I've bought some quality shadows, I've had a change of heart. I love playing with my eyes now but I've got to learn how to apply false eyelashes.
I liked the way you took your time to explain the colors in the palettes, and how you would wear them. Gives us an idea on how to work with certain colors to accent our features, not over bear them. Looking forward to the next part in the series.
I love this series... I think you are right that after a certain age women feel as if they should know everything about makeup. If they don't they are completely embarrassed to ask because they feel like they should know those things!
First off...love the title! I'm about to turn 30 in a few months, and I'm a mother of three small children. I have recently realized more than ever how my skin is changing. Maturing, so to speak. Fine lines...eeek! Anyway I watch a lot of "beauty gurus" here on utube in my rarely occurring spare time, and I'm super thrilled to finally have someone that is addressing makeup for "aging" women. I'm really looking forward to this series! Officially a member of the grown Ass Women's Club! ;)
Every once in a while I do a search for a makeup guru that caters to women in their 40s, but am not having much luck. I have been subscribed to your channel for quite some time, because I find you relatable and in my age range (I am almost 43). So glad you are doing this series.
WOW! The MAC giveaway is wonderful! I like the Physicians Formula Canyon Classics and use a Wet n Wild shimmer with it for basic. I've never owned a MAC shadow before. So cool of you to do these instructional vids. Thank you!
If you haven't already tried it, you may want to look at It Cosmetics' Naturally Pretty Volume 1 palette. It's all matte, BUT it has a shade called "Shimmering Pearl" that you can mix with any of the matte shades to make it a shimmer shade.
Marnie, you have the gift for talking and making videos. I absolutely loved this format. I have a gazillion of eye shadows and often hate them all. I liked your MAC choices. Definietely continue with this video idea. And last but not least, you look GORGEOUS in this video !
You tube totally needed a video like this, all the other makeup gurus are so young and I'm so glad that I found a woman like you who is my age (38) and knows makeup and gives great advice on how to wear it.... Thank you Marnie!,
Thank you for the options, you took the stress out of picking appropriate eyeshadow for a 'grown ass woman' from a sea of glitter and obnoxious colors! I can't wait for more videos in this series!
Thank you so much for doing this series. My grown ass is 33 and can do very basic make-up ( foundation, blush, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss or lipstick). However, eyeshadow is where I am so clueless and fear I will (without realizing) look like a clown by incorrect application or wrong color choices. Please continue this series with a few more videos on eyeshadow application, etc......!!!!
You have changed the way I wear my makeup at 36 and Caroline Hirons has changed my beauty routine you two together have given me the best skin I have had and hope I have forever Thanks
As a 44 year old 'grown-arse' woman, I was very excited about this series of videos. After being told one too many times recently that I looked 'tired', I decided to turn to UA-cam for some advice on makeup. I have never really worn anything other than mascara on my eyes. The advice and swatches that you provide are fantastic. Living in Australia, I can only buy a lot of these great palettes online and are not able to test in person. Thank you and I look forward to the rest of the videos in this series.
Fantastic idea for a video series. As someone that was never allowed to wear makeup in university or my job (as a chemist in a pharma lab it was deemed 'unsafe'), I didn't get into makeup until later in my life. I really liked how you included drugstore, high end and everything in between. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I have been a subscriber for awhile. Having just turned 38 I immediately began paying attention when you said "advanced age". Working in the IT industry I used to be the "young one", now I am "advanced aged". I like to feel seasoned but also in tune with the youngsters coming into the industry. I love the selection you suggested and look forward to trying it to try to boost my confidence amongst the young folk I work with.
I wanted to recommend a drugstore pallette, the Wet-n-Wild Vanity Pallette. It has 3 matte shades and 3 shimmer shades. It's great for everything you described in the video plus it's like $4.
A very inexpensive option people might want to try is the Essence "to die for" quad. It has a sheen in the peach colour - perfect for the lid - and matte browns. It works well with a primer.
I have to say as a "grown ass woman" I love the title of your new series! I have always loved makeup but since I really started watching beauty videos on You Tube about a year ago, I have been playing a lot more and trying new products. At any age, beauty is important to most women. I appreciate your suggestions and recommendations and honesty. Thank you for hosting such a great giveaway!
Great video! Although I have worn makeup for at least 35 years now ,I never knew quite how to apply it correctly. I tended to only do neutral colors and only a few at that because it was overwhelming! I have only just started watching UA-cam videos for makeup last year and have really picked up a lot of techniques. Although I really enjoy most of the tutorials, I found that I still was searching for something a little more in my general age group. So happy to have found you and look forward to your tutorials!!!! The colors you have chosen for your give away are beautiful !!! Good luck to all!
No matter how long your videos are, I never seem to lose interest! This is such a great and unique idea! I am looking forward to the rest of the series! :)
I love this series idea. I am in my 30s and didn't get into makeup until about two years ago. There is a definite need for beauty videos geared for more wearable and mature looks. I cannot wait to see what else you have in store
I love the title of the video! I am so glad you are doing this series. After my son was born I found myself not wearing makeup as often. I find your product recommendations very useful. I can't wait to see your next video.
I love this GAW series! I have always been into "very basic" makeup like mascara, lip, a blush and maybe some liner. Only have eyeshadow that I received for free from the Lancôme gift w purchase that I rarely used. I got some items from Sephora for Christmas and had no idea what to do. UA-cam has been amazing! Thank you thank you!!!
This is a great platform for us "older women" to sit and watch and learn something more about make up! I also was stuck with Clinique and maybe Estée Lauder or Lancôme if I felt like splurging. I mean I didn't even own a make up brush until a couple of years ago! I am so happy to you initiated this concept and love your delivery. Thank you for this!
It is so nice to have a you tubers that shows a more mature's way to do makeup. I never worn makeup, but now I would like to start getting into it and these would be a great start. Thanks
Marnie, I am probably one of the view watchers that isn't a pro makeup wearer. I like the fact that you give your honest opinions and share the color choices because it is sometimes really hard for me to pick the right shade. I am very excited to see more of the same! I have never worn MAC eyeshadow before but like that you can make your own palette. Keep the great videos coming!
I am just getting into my 30's and I love the idea of this video series. As soon as you mentioned Covergirl in shimmering sands I had to subscribe. It's something I have been using for many years and it's one of my favourites. I know I'm not that old but I have never worn much makeup and I would like to start so I will continue to watch!
I absolutely agree with your MAC choices. I keep a 4 palette of my most used shadows and they include Blanc type, wedge, grain and sable. I am 58 and agree that, while glitters are out, a slight shimmer shadow right in the center of the lid adds dimension and lightens the eye! Great suggestions and I wouldn't mind winning some of those shadows since I am close to hitting pan on my favorites!
I can't wait to see more of this series. You put a lot of thought into this video. I see a lot of videos that are overwhelming and it is nice to see something more basic.
I'm turning 40 this year and I'm a lot into beauty stuff...I always look for tips from more grown ass women because they are more useful for me than those from the younger experts...I love your videos, you are a beautiful clever woman! Hugs! XO
I realize that this comment is on a very old video, but I wanted to tell you that it's how I discovered you.....and the title cracked me up because I am amazed at the 20 year old you tubers who tell me (I'm 50) about wrinkles. LMAO. I love watching women in my age range because I do think our needs and styles do change as we age. Obviously makeup a 25 year old wears is NOT going to be flattering on my 50 year old skin! My skin care and makeup routine has changed throughout the years, and I see it as evolution......not a negative thing. I DO think women of any age should wear what they are comfortable with, and what they like. I'm also a firm believer that no makeup is going to look good without good skin care which should begin early on.So.......I'm so glad I found you!
This is a great series. I am 34 with hooded eyes and can admit that eye shadows still baffle me a bit so I am glad to see you make all these suggestions. Those MAC colors are beautiful and look perfect for everyday wear.
thank you for this wonderful video! I am a grown ass woman myself and all I can say is you hit the nail on the bud on so many levels in this video! I am 41 and only discovered youtube in the last couple of years. I wish I would have found this fountain of information years ago because I am still applying eyeshadow like a teenager! I am totally looking forward to your new series because while I love all the beautiful youtubers in their 20s and 30s, I want to see beautiful women (like yourself) my own age. I love your videos, I can so relate. keep up the good work!:-)
Yes Clinique was where I started too! With the skincare and then into a few makeup items. Marnie! I love this series! How fun, and you're doing great with the basic explanations and direction for people new to makeup.
Ooh I was so looking forward to seeing this and it definitely did NOT disappoint. Thank you for your hard work! I also am a grown-ass woman and I did learn a lot. I have been eyeing that Lorac pro quite a lot... I decided to get the Naked 3 because I have strong colors already, so I needed a bit more neutral. But who am I kidding... I am just waiting to "need" something from Ulta and then I will roll this palette in the purchase... for good measure.... and for the purposes of not raising the eyebrows of my dear husband, who has not yet said anything and has kindly relinquished any use of the master bathroom since the counters are chalk full of my "hobby". :-) I have never had MAC eyeshadows. But I hear so much about wedge... I will have to swing by a Mac counter one of these days... Thank you again and I can't wait for the next installment! Your excitement is contagious! Great video!!!
Love the idea of this series. Great work. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your research to guide us grown ass women into the right path. Look forward to the next video.

I couldn't say it better

LOL! Actually the shimmery colors can go on the inner corner of the eyes, and I use them right below and or above my eyeliner

What an amazing idea! I love that you did all this research in order to find the ultimate palette for beginners!
Loving this new series idea! Can't wait for more. Thank you so much for sharing your time with us!!!!
I love this video! It is so refreshing to see someone closer to my age talking about grown up makeup! I love watching all if these 20 year olds talk about makeup but being almost 40 myself I look for something a little bit more age appropriate! Big thumbs up!
Love love love this series....no quit making them please.....you are so great!!!!!!
My goodness yes! Finally classy age appropriate help with make up.. for us grown ass women.. I really look forward to your videos! THANK YOU
My perfect palette(s): drugstore, high quality, neutral, only three shades.. the Milani brow kits.
This grown ass woman is loving this series!Looking forward to your next video.
As I'm getting close to 40 I am thankful for this series. Thanks!!!
I love how honest you are and to the point about products. I really enjoyed this video!!
Thank you Marnie!,
Thank u so much for putting together this series!!! It is so hard to find modern makeup tips for GAWs-lol. Love it !!
Thank you for all your suggestions and I love the title of this new series!
Love the Title, and I'm looking forward to future instalments!
What a great series! Looking forward to seeing them all! Have a wonderful week!
It's a great palette, but it's been discontinued for years. :(
A very inexpensive option people might want to try is the Essence "to die for" quad. It has a sheen in the peach colour - perfect for the lid - and matte browns. It works well with a primer.
Fabulous start to your series -- always enjoy your passion, festiisousness and the research you put into making this helpful to everyone!
Thank you so much for making this series!!! It's been very helpful
Thanks for this video series. Can't wait to see them all.
As I'm moving into 40 this year, this is a topic I'm excited to see the rest of the series! Thanks!
I'm ecstatic that you're doing this series! I love your MAC suggestions and I've written them down in case I'm not the lucky winner.
Love this video! So useful for beginners, working ladies, and mature ones! So excited for the rest of the series!
Thanks so much for listing all of the products and linking a source to buy them. It is just so helpful, as are you!
Great idea for a series, I can't wait to start seeing your demonstrations.
What a great series! I had to stop and take notes. Thanks so much for putting this all together!
It is so nice to have a you tubers that shows a more mature's way to do makeup. I never worn makeup, but now I would like to start getting into it and these would be a great start. Thanks
A great brown one highlight to add to any palette is brulle from wet and wild. It's matte and works great
Marnie, I am probably one of the view watchers that isn't a pro makeup wearer.
What a great series! I'm excited to see what's to come, great job Marnie!
What an excellent idea for a series!!!! I can't wait to see the entire thing. I'll be sure to add it to my playlist!
Hugs! XO
I love this series! I can't wait to hear what you have to say about blushes & bronzers, I could use some recommendations.
Love that you are starting this series. Great video!
Love this!!! Your right...I'm 53 and just started wearing makeup. Totally over whelmed!
I'm also a firm believer that no makeup is going to look good without good skin care which should begin early on.So.......I'm so glad I found you!
this was fantastic, thank you for doing this series. very much looking forward to the next parts.
This is a great series. I am 34 with hooded eyes and can admit that eye shadows still baffle me a bit so I am glad to see you make all these suggestions. Those MAC colors are beautiful and look perfect for everyday wear.
Loving this series! While I love all these beauty bloggers who are young 20s I have been lost in how to apply some of their advice!
thank you for this wonderful video!
I have never had MAC eyeshadows. But I hear so much about wedge... I will have to swing by a Mac counter one of these days... Thank you again and I can't wait for the next installment! Your excitement is contagious! Great video!!!
Love this new series you are doing! I can't wait for more from this series!
I am over 50 and love your tips, especially the shimmer along the eyebrow. I so agree with that. Thank you.
Love the idea for this video series. Can't wait to watch the rest of them
Love the idea of this series. Great work. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your research to guide us grown ass women into the right path. Look forward to the next video.
you have the wittiest humor of all the beauty gurus
