What a lovely man , a credit to his family , to boxing and sport in general . No airs and graces with Henry , he never forgot his roots , a thoroughly humble and down to earth man . RIP Henry Cooper .
Sorry Sir Henry, when checking the time elapsed between rounds 4 and 5 on an unedited video of the first Ali fight, the time elapsed was only 1minute 2 seconds. There wasn't anyone running to the locker or anywhere else for a replacement set of gloves. Great left hook though.
Why did cooper feeling like had to lie, and say the split glove gave Ali 2 and a 1/2 mins. The reality was Dundee pointed at the split glove the ref refused to get a new pair and it cost only 5 seconds. The tape shows this
"Lie" is a bit harsh. We know it's not what happened, that it got Ali a few seconds, nothing more. But we can't expect Cooper to be objective about it. My guess is that he was giving his perception, and if it doesn't entirely coincide with reality, well, we can cut him some slack. Harsh reality is that he was a decent but very fragile boxer, with a good left hook but vulnerable chin, leaving aside his tendency to cut.
@@DHTCF There's a massive difference between the reality - the interval being extended by only six seconds - and Cooper's claim that it was extended by ninety seconds. I like Henry Cooper and I agree with your assessment of him as a boxer but he's lying and saying that we can't expect him to be objective is the same as saying we can't expect him to be honest. I expect him to be honest and not perpetuate this absurd myth.
It's not true that clay got a lot of extra time. He got an extra 6s that's all. They didn't get an extra set of gloves. This is a story that had become part of folklore but it's simply not true.
@@ppuh6tfrz646 I've never prepared a list down to 20, but can see that he probably wouldn't be in it. It's easy to think of numerous British boxers better than Cooper. The idea that he was better than, say, Lennox Lewis or Joe Calzaghe is laughable.
@@DHTCF Exactly. People get carried away with Cooper because he was a lovable character and because of the myth surrounding the first Ali fight. I've always found it difficult to think of Lennox Lewis as a British fighter but he was certainly in a completely different league from Cooper. How Cooper is considered by some as the greatest British fighter yet Randolph Turpin is practically forgotten is a mystery to me.
