It was not a communist revolt either. A good portion if not a majority were centre left voters and conservatives. We could’ve became a capitalist nation afterwards, but the key would’ve been free elections that both moderate communists and conservatives would’ve accepted the results of.

The problem with the West's behavior wasn't that, that they did not help. The problem was that in all the propaganda tools they had (like the CIA-run Radio Free Europe), they promised help to the Hungarians, thus the rebels kept on fighting despite the hopeless situation, in the hope that the US will come and help. Many young lives were lost for no reason, just so that America could have a little more anti-Soviet propaganda.

Only Spain wanted to help us, but the americans convinced them to not to do, so we had just rebellion students, and other armed citizens, who had no experience in the combat. The Hungarian military could not be organized for this short time. It was clearly we were going to lose.

The Soviets would’ve been a lot more hostile to this approach. Hungary is much closer to important cities in Russia then Vietnam or Korea. Intervention in Hungary would’ve escalated things a lot more
