You know something is terribly wrong when Russia and Poland fight on the same side.
They have always fought on the same side, you can take the example of the Holy Alliance against Ottoman Empire.
@@na3x472 that's the point. The ottomans were the something terribly wrong. In the past, have a neighbour of different religion was, to say it lightly, unfavorable
@@arch3978 which is why russia and poland fought to begin with (different sects of faith)
Poland and Russia often united against a common enemy. For example, against the Ottoman Empire and Sweden. Often Sweden and Poland united against Russia
Meh. For the century following this war, Poland was essentially a military dependency of Russia. They [by necessity] moved pretty much in lock step.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Also, *embarassing cough* please pay no attention to the horrible mistake of me forgetting to show the UK as united between 1707 and 1716. Just pretend it's before 1801 so for some reason it doesn't count? Eh, I got nothing. I goofed. XD
If I remember right didn't Transylvania attempt to invade Poland from the south as well? I am pretty sure they tried to siege Krakow
Edit: Nevermind that was the 1660 Northern War
Also, didn't the Russians have the port of Azov up until 1711? or am I wrong about that?

Danskejävlarna have no honor!
Denmark has been always raped by Sweden.
what? nah so what about the kalmar union?
oh when Sweden wasnt at its full size and was rising to a great power?
Wait, an european war without France in it ? Wow
France was fighting in the war of the Spanish succession at the time of this war.
Why would France care about Sweden, other than their having similar flags/crests? Looks like the farthest west this extended was what is now Germany, not counting GB who joined because of Hannover.
Tundra I said that because France joined pretty much all european wars since the 1600's
kreeper face I guess, if by "european wars" you mean major wars involving most of Europe. I just feel like there was no reason for France to join this, as it was a coalition war, which usually only involves countries near the coalition's target, so it shouldn't be that surprising.
In fact, France was too occupied in the Spanish succession war, I know that some french officers were in the swedish major state during the batlle of Narva, but that was all.
Great Northern War actually the coolest sounding name thought of for any war ever
The Great Patriotic War sounds good too.
The War of the Wooden Bucket trumps both of those.
Come on, The goat war sounds way cooler if you were to ask me
@@seneca983 I had to google this one. I was slightly surprised it was a thing
100 year war sounds better.
Peter the Great started building St. Petersburg on Swedish territory before the war was even close to over.

Poor Sweden got attacked from all sides. This thus ended the legacy of the great Swedish empire, so little known outside of Scandinavia.
To put it in EU4 terms: They didn't manage their AE and got coalitioned by all their neighbours. We were to greedy. Russia did much the same but slower. and managed their Aggressive expansion.

They were the ones that betrayed us in 1795, just after we saved Vienna in 1683.
1705: Charles XII leg was injured. During battle of Poltava, 25 men carried Charles but 3 remained as guns fired. Then, Charles collapsed but Swedes protected the king. One cavalry man saved Charles by dismounting his horse and leaving himself behind. The one who save Charles was a hero to Charles. Then he died at the end of this war.

It's insane to think this was concurrent with the War of Spanish Succession. This, the War of Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years' War. Europe was into wars during the 18th century.
Europe is always into wars. The modern era is simply a short pause.
@@thisisaname5589 70 years (not counting Balkan wars). All thanks to the European Union.
the early 19th century too/Napoleonic Wars
@@tonigym3061 why not count the balkans though (just curious)
@@Cnut_the_grape Well, one argument (and I'm not really an expert on the balkan wars but still) is that it was more like a civil war down there, the aftershock of the fall of Yugoslavia, and not really an inter-state war. The other is that some people view western and central europe as "more europe" than eastern europe, which is treated as a kind of secondary europe, owing to the economic poverty and continental cultural difference caused by the isolationism of the Iron Curtain and the domination of the Soviet Union.
Carolus Rex(or any other song in that album) would be the perfect music to play over this.
Poltava fits perfectly.
POLTAVA... DEATH AND PAIN TO THE SWEDISH EMPIRE RUINI IMPERII
Ahura Mazda MADNESS CURSE YOUR FEEBLE HORDE!
Well Poltava was just a Russian army attacking a very weakend army not much of a fight compared to other Swedish victories against Russia which were far greater.
To some extent true, but still overall Russia managed their campaign much better than the swedes. Charles XII would occasionally get great victories(like the first Narva battle, much of Polish campaign) and then totally squander them in pursuit of stupid unrealistic goals while placing himself in ever deteriorating conditions. On the other hand russians stringed a bunch of small victories(Malatitze, Lesnaya, sack of Baturyn) and even pyrrhic defeats(e.g. Veprik) into something swedes just couldn't survive.
Also notion that it was "not much of a fight" is totally hindsight bias, as during the events themselves it was Charles XII who was attacking eager to fight a decisive battle, while Peter I was quite wary and kept on building fallback positions and redoubts etc.
Brilliant historical work (as always), EmperorTigerstar ;)
Thank you for all your constant, excellent videos :) !
As a Swede this is kinda sad to watch. :/

Really? 30 years war, 80 years war, 100 years war were all before that...
Maybe it's because war becomes more and more advanced that things progress faster one way or another that those older wars lasted for that much longer.
The proper historian term for those wars are "long-ass" wars. This war is just "long".

I was looking for this lol
Why did you put Sweden in red? You've said before that you colour the attacker red and the defender blue, but Sweden was the one being attacked...
The war started with them being attacked. After Sweden had pretty much defeated both Denmark, Poland-Lithuania and Russia, they should have made peace and focused on the Spanish succession. But kept fighting and tried to invade especially Russia, and at last, lost. So for the majority of the war, Sweden was on the offensive side
+The Joker Ah, I see you base your entire history knowledge on Extra Credits
Nope, nope, and no. Sweden was the defender the entire war by the literal definition of what a defender is. The Coalition Forces started the war. They were the aggressors.
Sweden could had done nothing to intervene in the Spanish War of Succession because Sweden and Spain... I mean... Look at a map. They're not next door neighbours. Sweden wasn't in a position to intervene in conflicts on the other side of Europe lol

_Swedish Troops arrive at the Silesian Border_
Saxony : Oh no,Sweden is Coming!
Denmark was pissed over recent losses to Sweden, Poland-Lithuania craved parts of the baltics from Sweden and Russia with it's genious leader wanted a port to the baltic sea to act as a 'window to the west', this was the reason for the coalition against Sweden. And to think Sweden brought Denmark to it's knees, they puppeted Poland after several years of war and they crushed the Russian main army in one battle and Peter The Great wanted peace and give great concessions to Sweden. This is where the war should have ended, but Carolus Rex wanted blood he wanted to beat Russia so bad that they never could come back.. and we know what happened after that.
Odium1981 The russians wanted peace if they got a port to the west.
Yeah the Russians wanted territory despite Sweden not having lost a battle. Charles was confident why cede territory to Russia when we are winning the war.
in a nutshell:

*Peter the Great and reformed russian army* : let us introduce ourselves
The Russian army was reformed already before Peter I.... It's a common myth that the Russian army was inexperienced and backwards at the battle of Narva in 1700; the Russian army was in fact more experienced than their Swedish foes and their army had already gone through modernization. Peter I mostly disbanded more Streltser and recruited more and more dragoon regiments (a lot!) after Narva, but nothing significant apart from that.
@@Leaffordes Actually, the Pre-Peter army was consisting mostly of foreign specialists and levied men, that have shown their ineffectiveness and low morale.

Poland intended to betray Sweden
To think Poland had the winged Hussars that saved Europe only 17 years before. What happened to it?
Poland was ravaged by the Deluge to a degree similar to the Thirty Years' War's devastation to Germany. Its triumph at Vienna was a swan song, and the country spent much of the 18th century subordinated to the interests' of foreign powers. Its involvement in the Great Northern War, and getting nothing but suffering out of it, is one such example. It was brought in by a Saxon king in Saxony's interest rather than its own.
