    I don’t really view this as an apology, it’s apparent this was the bare minimum action they needed to take to hopefully not end up ruining their business. I’m glad they did it but it doesn’t absolve them of the choices, words they used, or actions they made in the lead up to and during the announcement video. I’m willing to give them a second chance, but an “apology” with no meaningful long term actions is meaningless, and people are going to be rightfully wary of their motivations now. This is just the first step in the right direction after the damage they caused themselves.

  • @TimothyCollins
    @TimothyCollins Місяць тому +73

    Here is the thing - if they cannot make ends meet with a channel that gets millions upon millions of views plus ad placement plus special videos for games and such plus 6k playing patreon members then they are managing that business badly. This is what happened to buzzfeed. Instead of buying a cheap tripod for a second camera angle they hired 3 more people to hold the camera and the lighting and cur cards and such. It was a mindset of "Just throw money at the problem, do bother being at all creative in solving these things."
    Watcher could be a channel with 10 employees. They don't need close to 30 to do that. And it's not like they don't know the tricks. They have been doing this for awhile now - they know how to do things in a cheaper way.
    I refer back to other channels - Scott the Woz. He makes a video with just as high production value that is feature length and then disappears for months while making the next. I am 100% sure he makes ends meet by reducing his output to match the money he has and the quality he wants it to be at. Yet Watcher had the idea they need 12 episodes released weekly to be a TV show - a model that stopped being relevant years ago.

    • @sarahmayer7026
      @sarahmayer7026 Місяць тому +2

      Exactly, the technical equipment that is affordable these days will produce high quality content if you are willing to use it and come up with creative ideas.

    • @TimothyCollins
      @TimothyCollins Місяць тому

      @@sarahmayer7026 That's what strikes me - at the low end Watcher is making $100k/month. Probably double that but we will go with that.
      Their most expensive show is Ghost files (Travel and such). I can't see how an episode of that ought to cost more than $50k per episode. They make 6 per season. So that eats up 3 months of revenue for the company. And leaves at least $900k left over.
      So if this is about money... either they are very very poorly managed or someone is soaking up money on the side.
      Or the reference to money is a lie.

    You have to work within your means. Its good to have ideas but you can't overstep. It doesn't matter if youre on TV/Netflix or whatever you have to stay in budget. By the sounds of things they spend more on their productions than a lot of TV companies. If they want to make it work they have to start cutting the fat and excess. I mean their streaming membership was close to Amazon Prime cost and look at all you get from that. They'd be providing a fraction of the programs and no additional benefits for near the same price? Whats the current benefits of their Patron? I think they've lost all perspective of money. Yeah, I get that. We all understand UA-camrs trying to figure out better ways of monetizing their content, I think we all get it and are cool with that. However, it was a complete paywall they were planning on doing. It does feel like they showed a side of themselves that think that people who can’t or won’t pay are beneath them. I don’t want to feel that sort of resentment seeping through their future work now that their hand was forced because of the reality of the market. I pay for youtube because I watch a ton on content on here, they were only one creator of a hundred that I follow. I wasn’t about to pay half as much again for the 3 or 4 series they do that I enjoy. They aren’t that amazing. The announcement was arrogant and untactful; it was rude to their patreons, their international viewers whose dollar doesn’t not convert well to USD, and their impoverished viewers. @Aurelius-bf3yx it's not that they didn't have things written down. It's just something about the whole thing. They rode a LOT on an eat the rich Indy artist image but, lo and behold, that spirit is tossed under the bus because their 'life dreams' MUST involve international luxury travel and big production teams. Their tactic is working well though because plenty of fans are accepting this 'apology' as if it was a huge favour and they were in the wrong for getting upset. It's about the best they could do. I appreciate the courage it takes to stand up (or indeed sit down) and say we did this wrong and this wrong and we hear you were hurt by this and we are so sorry. To make the changes people were asking for. It couldn't have been easy. I will always respect someone who just says "I admit I made a mistake" more than someone who tries to weasel out of it. Putting it on main is so much braver than the classic Notes Apology we usually see.
    However they REALLY need to put the work in on their Patreon to get it making "enough" money for what they want to do. Most people reacting on Reddit didn't even know they had one. It's going to take a lot to bring people back after all this. Maybe they might consider, I dunno, moving OUT of one of the most expensive cities in the world? Rent studio space elsewhere instead of trying to pass the cost on to fans. Use freelancers instead of staff until you have it all sorted out.
    They desperately need to pay for a consultant of some kind to avoid this in the future and learn how to get their Patreon making money for them. It's severely under-utilized right now.

    I think someone at the company, whether it was Steven, Ryan, Shane, all three of them, or someone in a dedicated management position, badly misread why their fans watch their channel. I think people would still be perfectly happy if they cut the budget for their shows in half. We started out watching them basically talking in an office with a fold-out table and sleeping on the floor in a haunted house, and that's what people were there for. I can't blame anyone for not going back to the channel, I'm willing to give them a second chance because I love Ghost Files, Mystery Files, Puppet History, Too Many Spirits, Top 5 Beatdown and other shows they do, but I think they have lost a lot of goodwill, and I hope they take to heart why exactly that was.

I only know them through you talking about them in the past but haven’t watched them as I’m always behind in keeping up with the channels I’m already following. I was just catching up on your content when I noticed this update. With luck this will be a lesson and a warning to others. They trampled on their fans and patreons, but thought the fans would follow them as before. I hope this got them down from the high horses .

Im currently watching a few content creators on tiktok getting demonetized and understand not wanting to spend hundreds of thouaands investing into a business only to rely soley on someone elses platform. If they go down you have nothing left! Screw that. And not only that but if for some reason youtube or advertisers decides they dont like you anymore, youre screwed too.
    The new idea about still bringing video's to youtube is good. If anything happens to youtube, theyll still be fine, people who cant afford to pay can still watch, works out for everyone!

If that's the case, wouldn't br easier to focus their energy and income to create one or two "highly quality" pilots and try to sell it to Netflix, Amazon or a TV network and continue to create UA-cam, that clearly is crearly not necessary to be on 4K. If they choose to burn money, they can't make their audience responsable for it.

    I can imagine that they were so deep into their own reality with struggling with sponsors' demands and possibly also a certain number of fans who complained about the amount of ads they weaved into their videos, that they genuinely thought everybody would cheer for not having to deal with both their product placements as well as UA-cam's ad breaks any longer. Add to that a bit of pride and perhaps bad financial handling. Also, I believe they genuinely don't like Patreon, which is why they kinda overlooked the support they got from the people there.
    That's my way of rationalizing it. I still don't believe they are inherently evil or greedy. Let's hope they've learned their lesson.

I don't mind waiting a month (I only watch 2 or 3 things anyway), and those shows are kinda far between. But they did exactly what I'd said they had to. im glad they came out and apologized. it was a good apology. but after a massive screw up like that, you have mere hours to stop the bleeding before the fans go through the five stages of grief and decides to move on and they may have waited too long to say anything. people turned bitter. if they had gone with the plan outlined in their second vid from the get-go they would have been fine. hell, if they had come out and said directly to their viewers :"guys, we are struggling. we need your help. we will poll the audience and work on figuring out ways to bring in more income" they likely would have seen an outpouring of fan support and an increased subs. For me the worst part was honestly just trying to wrap my mind around the sheer number of illogical choices they opted for one after another. they somehow managed to confidently choose the "worst possible secret third option" at every turn. it dose not give me faith they can manage a business. i like their stuff and will warily give them a second chance but time will tell if they can save themselves from the hole. they lost a lot of monetary support by pulling this and a lot of burned people wont come back. which can very easily be a death sentence if they were already operating beyond their means.
