    Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It was very informative and it's nice how you showed each step and explained it. I've been playing with my laser for about a week so this will be fun to try next.

    This is the BEST lesson of photo engraving on wood. I've watched so many of them, but each one only gave me little information. The wood engraving I had made just like outline not too many details.
    Thanks for your video, I finally can make one like yours.

    Great tutorial! I'm saving this one. I know it's a bit old, but if you are still monitoring your comments, when you apply the treatment after the burn, do you apply within the burn, as well? Any issues with doing that. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for this video mate. I'm gonna experiment with these techniques. I know this video is a little old and my 50W laser is a bit newer than yours. But I'm curious about your distance of the laser head to the wood substrate. Seems so high up, is that something you calibrated manually specifically for doing this type of engraving? Cause it looks so smooth and great, especially for an old photo. I've been adjusting light levels in Gimp, then I sharpen mask, and convert to 1 pixel. The result isnt bad but it can look very pixelated. And ive had bad luck making older photos look good this way. I also always have to sand after i engrave due to resin from the burning. is that because im engraving too close? New to my laser and definitely still learning. havent changed any calibration, was just thrilled that it came to me in working order, lol. It's a lot of fun though. I'm definitely subscribing and checking out your other videos. Again, thanks for sharing!

    The best wood I have used when I want the photo on a white wood is Bass wood. There is almost no grain at all and the blacks come out with great contrast. Hope that helps. This is the same software I use for my laser. Works very well. Make notes about your power and speed for reference. As seen in the video, laser out samples of different power and speeds, especially on different woods.

    great! but you can do it with laser vinyl cutter also.

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому +1

      This wont really help you with a vinyl cutter. Machine works different.
      Also vinyl/leather type materials don't burn the same as wood, so even under a normal laser cutter you need to edit the photos differently.

    • @jjames3793
      @jjames3793 5 років тому

      Careful cutting any sort of Vinyl or pvc with a laser. The fumes contain chlorine gas which combines with h20 in the air and makes nitric acid which can condense on all the metal parts in the machine and can corrode the crap out of everything including all the wiring.

    My Laser inverts the colors. like the black hair it doesn't burn so that stays plain or white and the light areas it burns dark.
    Also when I burn an image it's only got two tones dark ass heck and no burn at all(plain) what could be the reason for these two issues?
    Thanks in advance for any help.

  • @alaa0al0z
    @alaa0al0z 7 років тому

    I tried this with Photoshop instead because I already have it on my laptop and it was pretty good for an newbie!! I have a couple of questions though: can you make a video for the finish process you use? How do you clean the wood after cutting? I didn't change Anything (mirrors, lens, honeycomb) so I wander if I should? cuz I saw you just posted a vid for changing the mirrors!

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому +1

      I'll do videos on specific material soon, but with wood engraving basic process is
      1- sand down to final desired finish as you would with any woodworking project.
      2- apply a small amount of any oil or stains which swell the wood a little.
      3- do the engraving
      4- and any more oils or surface treatments like lacquers or waxes.
      You shouldn't need to change mirrors or lenses from the stock ones provided. Engraving doesn't require a lot of power, and still comes out ok if your laser is a little misaligned. Just make sure your table is flat and level which is a simple job.

    Have you tried Redgum? Curious to see how that would burn with a tight grain

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  3 роки тому

      I have used blue gum which has a very similar looking grain and colour, and it works good. Blackbutt is good as well.
      Spotted gum was a bit oily so wouldnt do different shades of grey very well. Was only good for straight black & white solid text and lines.

    great video Stephen !! you are so clever, would this work on mirror acrylic ?

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  6 років тому

      No, you can't get this level of shading to work well on any type of acrylic.
      I am working on finding the best settings for making a good frosted looking image on acrylics using about 8 shaded of grey.

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому +2

      After tracing out your foreground with the 'free select tool', under the "Select" menu at the top, choose "Invert" (or keyboard control+I).
      This will change the area you can edit to the background. Keep selecting "Invert" to switch between editing the foreground or background while you still have it traced out.

    I noticed you said "50W" at the beginning, would a 2.5W or a 7W, 10W, 15W get the same results?

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  4 роки тому

      In principle the lower powered laser have enough power and tight enough focus the get similar results, maybe not the same levels of shading but something good.
      It will depend on if the other hardware and software is capable of pulsing the laser fast enough at high DPI to get a good result. I don't know anything about those machines to know how good that part is.

    Have you ever engraved Sequoioideae? (redwood)

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  6 років тому

      Don't get any of that here. I guess it might work similar to cedar, which is awful to engrave.
      In some woods with high contrasting growth rings, the light and dark parts burn at different rates and make it hard to get an even image.
      Could try using a lot of oil and burnishing the surface first so it might burn more even. I haven't really tried.

    Where do you source your timber?

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому

      Fortunately where I live there is one timber store that has a whole wall with about 30 racks of different timber species, and you can just go in and pick out a single board of whatever you want.
      This kind of shop is fairly rare. You need to ask local woodwork hobbyist, as supply source vary greatly depending on where you live.
      Also try shops that have recycled home renovation materials. Old door and window frames sometimes have nice hardwood.

      Gimp - photo processing
      Inkscape - text and composing layout
      RDWorks - laser cutting software
      If you use something like photoshop, illustrator, corel draw, etc, all the functions I use should be there with the same (or very similar) names.

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  6 років тому

      Barely a millimeter below the surface. This is a gentle wood-burning process, not relief carving.

      Yes I made it. You can buy the metal opener pieces for a dollar or 2 from ebay.

      Try pressing control instead. Pressing shift will add parts to your current selection, control will remove from your current selection. So if you are trying to select something in the middle of the area already selected, you need to use control to 'remove' it.
      It will make sense when you go try it hopefully.

      No specific brand, just 50W laser cutter off ebay, around $2000.
      But you should be able to achieve the exact same results with any of the smaller/cheaper 30W machines you can find on ebay.

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому +2

      This is one of the very common 50W CO2 Chinese laser cutters you will find on ebay.
      I'm engraving at recommended max speed (200mm/s) and 20-50% power (depends on wood type), so you should be able to achieve the same results with a smaller 30 or 40W machine. Just adjust the speed/power until you get good results.

    What printer are you using?
    And you say your doing the engraving at roughly 8-12mw. If ive got a 1w laser cutter, should i run it at 8-12mw power when engraving?

    • @makestuffnow
      @makestuffnow  7 років тому +2

      8-12W, not mW.
      A 1W laser is a completely different class of machines altogether. You,ll need full power and run it much slower. Probably down to 10mm/s, I don't know. I don't think this video would be very useful for very low power machines unfortunately.
      There's some arsehole named benbox who spams laser cutting videos with his shitty 1W laser machines and forum. Look him up and go ask him about it. And tell him from me he's an arsehole, and if he was living in australia I'd go drive round to his place and punch him in the cock.
