Hi Steven, just watched 3 of the series and returned to the first as you said the bike had ABS and traction. But your bike is not the Delux with the blacked out wheels and footrest panels. I could not find a comment on this....it maybe a regional variation, I am in Australia, the bike was only available in 2014 and only the Delux had ABS. A hard bike to find in Perth WA....but luckily found one for sale, I will test ride. They were apparently massively discounted before being unavailable....!
I think that handle is on the top box because it does come off. I had a Givi top box and the same arrangement of having a handle. The box popped off with the handle out and a button pushed I bet the box will pop off as if it is a piece of luggage.
Mr Steve, A+ commentary on the CTX1300. I didn’t know this bike existed By chance, I came across a used CTX1300 at my local California dealer. I thought ADV bikes were comfortable with their upright riding position, but the CTX1300 Seat and forward pegs was incredibly more comfortable. Your review was spot on, at 6’1” I also experienced slightly inadequate windscreen protection at 70+ mph. I hope to buy this fine machine in lieu of a 1000-1200 cc ADV motorcycle.
I have a CB1100 as well and love it. I'm in Los Angeles and also need a getaway bike for 200 or 300 mile comfortable runs, and occasional business trips/commuting. I'm 6'-2". I'm not excited about Goldwings, unless the 2018 feels slimmer. Does this sound like a good fit?
Thank you for watching. I have had 3 Gold Wings, a 1200 and 2 x 1500's. They are big compared to the CTX. If you are going on holiday for 2 weeks, then get a Wing; however, for day trips or a few days away the CTX is great. But specify the touring pack. Otherwise you do not get the topbox and tall screen. The CTX is also considerably cheaper than a Wing. In the UK about £10,000 cheaper! And that's the price of another CB1100.
thanks for this insight Steve and yes I agree, very handsome bike. For your 3rd bike, how about a late first gen V-strom 650 for running in and out of town ! Cheap as chips these days, good seating position, tall enough for good vis and easy on the knees . .
Nice bikes overall but I wish it had better mirrors as the ones on the bike are only good for blocking the wind off of your hands! .Since you are in the UK do you have a proper Bowler Hat helmet? Nice bike . Cheers!
Awesome video, thanks for sharing your insights into the bike. I will watch the other parts post haste. For a third bike, consider a BMW GS650/700GS. Light, fun, extremely efficient.
Thanks Steven you very well pointed out the discrepancy between mechanical excellence and cheapness of bags, topcase. That does seem quite a shame - is there an aftermarket for upscaling these items ? Loved the ride-along ! Great video sir! -oh, and you sometimes sound exactly like Sir Alfred Hitchcock.~!
Thanks for watching, and your comments. I am not aware of any after-market replacement bags. You kind of get used to them the more you use it. considering the cost of the bike Honda could have done better. Having said that, the more I ride it, the more I like it.
manseated I have some saddlebag bags that I got from the Honda dealership . I talk about it on my channel under the playlist of "Motorcycle Gear Reviews". It should be labeled " Unboxing of the Hopnel Saddlebag Liner". That is the bag that I use on long trips, like I was on recently to Lawton, Oklahoma.
Hi. How do you find the power delivery on the CTX? I have always mainly had powerful bikes but last cruiser I had was a Harley V rod muscle with 120 BHP . I loved the cruiser aspect of the bike and would like another cruiser as I’m nearing 60. What’s it like at getting up to motorway speeds?
Thank you for watching. I am not someone who red-lines engines.I tent to change up at just over 3k rpm. Sometime up to 4k. On that basis, it is very smooth acceleration as you go up though the gears. I would call the bike quick, not fast. With this style of riding I tent to get the best mpg out of it. The CTX regularly returns 60 mpg on A roads and 55 on motorways. Having said all that, if you wanted it to, I am sure it would be a lot faster if you revved it higher, perhaps to 6k or 7k. You would be up to 70 mph in a few seconds. For me, it a cruising tourer, not a sport tourer. It suits my style and I like it.
Hi Steve . Thanks for reply. I guess on any bike it’s how far you want to twist the throttle but I prefer comfort these days than speed . I think best thing is maybe to test ride one of these and see how it feels .
Hi Steve well I’ve took the plunge and going to change my ZZR for the CTX. I went to work recently on my ZZR and really am struggling now with the riding position. I’ve just got a good deal on a white one that’s on a 16 plate with 1500 miles on clock so I am trading in . Have you looked into the luggage protectors ? They are like a “D” lock shape and bolt on just in front of the hard luggage. Hopefully will get it over this next week.
I believe it does charge a phone but I also have a 12v accessory near the handlebars for satnav. The plug has 2 USB sockets so could use the other for charging while on the move.
Thank you for watching. The mirrors were never an issue until I fitted a Sat-nav on the handle bars and then could not see that sides mirror. When I moved it to a more central position it was not a problem.
Thank you for watching. I do think the bike could benefit from an extra gear for motorway, 70 mph, cruising. This bike was made for one year to use up parts off the shelf. Honda simply used the gearbox they had in stock at the time. Having said that, it only has 5 gears and it seems fine when riding.
Thanks for watching. So far I've not had to do any emergency braking where you just give it everything, so not noticed touching the engine. I am 6' 1" with quite long legs, seems to be okay so far.

Steve i have an ST1100, that turns 3000rpm at 60 mph in 5th gear. What is the gearing on this please? Can you adjust the handlebars somthat you can actually see something out of the mirrors? Kind regards john
Thank you for watching. I have no idea what the gear ratio is, but sounds similar to your ST1100. You can definitely alter the angle of the handlebars as I have done it. They were far too high when delivered and I had to lower them.
The CTX has the same engine and drive train as the Pan, but its lost about 20 bhp. Whilst the Pan is a sport tourer, I would class the CTX as a cruise tourer. You sit more upright and your feet are in front of you rather than beneath. I have never ridden a Pan, so I can't make the comparison. What I can say is that I like the CTX. Just taken it to Germany for two weeks (on a trailer) and did about 1800 miles on some of the best biking roads in Europe. First time I have been on it for 14 consecutive days. No problems and very comfortable.
Thank you for watching. I changed it two years ago for a BMW K1600. I wanted more luggage space to get back to continental touring. The CTX was good for day trips, but not for two week holidays.
Thank you for watching. Carrying a pillow is no different to riding solo. Having said that, I do not race around; I cruise. This bike has plenty of power for two-up with luggage for cursing around.
I am not a particularly fast rider and tend to let gravity do much of my braking. So, have not really noticed this. By habit I use both brake lever and pedal at the same time without thinking, so have not really tried to see how well the split braking works. Must give it a go and see if it is weak.
Finally something new about this model with decent video quality. When you have the time can you please tell us how is the suspension? I've heard some negative input about this... Thank you for the review! Enjoy the ride!
Thank you for watching. I have had problems with the suspension being quite hard and have solved it. I will do a part 3 video showing this and I also discovered how the top box just comes off.
I love the Cruise Control on some bikes .The palm grip is nice however .I crushed my wrist in the 80's and get bad bad cramps so I have to use the palm grip thing .
The CTX has the engine and drive train from the Pan European. The gold Wing is a six cylinder 1800 cc, whilst the CTX is four cylinder, 1260 cc. GW has cruise control and adjustable air suspension. Its also quite a bit bigger and offers far more luggage space. You also get other stuff on the GW such as GPS, integrated sound system etc. You could say that the CTX is a smaller and cheaper little brother to the GW.
I have had three Gold Wings, a 1200 and two 1500's, but never an 1800. The one thing that the CTX does not have that I would like is the cruise control. Otherwise similar in comfort and riding position. However, Honda does not make the CTX anymore. It had a very short production run to use up surplus Pan European engines.
Tried it, and it works! I am moving the GPS down to the centre of the bars and when I have done that I will make a part 3 video and include the top box removal. Thank you.
David - Thank's for watching. Since getting a Corbin saddle (see part 2 video) I am sitting slightly lower and no longer get any buffeting around my head.
I reckon a sports bike or vt 1000 firestorm or even a nc 750 for around town or big scotter I have Suzuki burgman 650 and Honda nss 250 love scooters so diffrent
I cringe a bit every time I find a British motovlogger. "OMG YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SI... oh wait you're in the UK. Carry on." Anyway, excellent video on the bike. Looking at getting one of these myself.
thats my next bike..but thatll be 5 years time, what £12.000 new.But trouble his when you do pay the finances off.whos got £9.000 cash..you got to keep it for life at least 10 years.
Thank you for watching. I have owned a FJR1300. Great bike; however, killed my back with having to lean forward. I changed it for a BMW K1600 which has a more upright sitting position.
Mirrors on this bike is for nothing, because you can not see nothing on your back:handle bar with accessories stay direct between your eyes and mirrors.Engine on this bike is enforced from 120 HP ST1300 to 70 HP and I dont understand, why. Honda made big mistake with CTX1300,because this bike was made in 2014 and in 2015 was discontinued. I tested CTX1300 and I bought original model Honda ST1300. And I love ST1300 a lot.
Thanks for watching. Whilst the mirrors are not ideal, I can see behind me, which is the object. By retuning the engine they have given it more torque at lower revs. It is a cruiser not a sport tourer. It suits my style of riding. I agree that if you want faster, get the Pan European. If you want to carry more luggage, get the Gold Wing. For cruising around in a relaxed style, sitting upright with no backache, the CTX does it for me.
I don't have a problem with the mirrors at all but I know it's a common complaint for shorter people although I'm only 5' 10". Some have just dropped the handlebars a little to overcome this and other have added after market mirrors to the bars which looks to be very easy to do. As to the short production run I think the CTX was more to do with a design concept for the 2018 Goldwings. The GL1800 without the armchair on the back looks very like the CTX, or the older F6B. The engine was developed from the ST1300 engine but modified cam, altered compression ratios, valve timing improvements, air intake and exhaust settings altered for low and mid range speeds giving better efficiency with combustion. So yes, it is the 'same' engine but much improved. ST1300 owners reckon there are pluses and minuses on both sides but the CTX is a more comfortable ride for long journeys.
I have had it for over two years now and still not bored. On a Pan I lean forward too much. On the CTX I sit upright. It's better for my back as I get chronic pain if have to lean forward.
Nice video! What kind of cam are you using while riding? If you aren't already a member, come check out our forum - lots of great info for CTX people. www.ctx1300forum.com
@@brabus8317 You may very well be correct. I thought I had read it somewhere. I do think it a shame they did not develop the concept over a few years. If they had added the DCT transmission and a cruise control I would have bought one. It would be about half the price of the new Gold Wing.

Thank you for watching. I have only touched ground a couple of times. Therefore, I would say it has good ground clearance.
Thanks for this video, I want to know if you brake hard...did your knees hit the engine? Thanks
Thanks for watching. So far I've not had to do any emergency braking where you just give it everything, so not noticed touching the engine. I am 6' 1" with quite long legs, seems to be okay so far.
I love that bike, great choice!
@@georgecostanza2695 - Thank you for watching.

Thanks Steve. Cant find or certainly havent ridden anything yet to beat my old Pan. I like the look of the CTX so maybe this could be worth a try?
The CTX has the same engine and drive train as the Pan, but its lost about 20 bhp. Whilst the Pan is a sport tourer, I would class the CTX as a cruise tourer. You sit more upright and your feet are in front of you rather than beneath.
I have never ridden a Pan, so I can't make the comparison. What I can say is that I like the CTX. Just taken it to Germany for two weeks (on a trailer) and did about 1800 miles on some of the best biking roads in Europe. First time I have been on it for 14 consecutive days. No problems and very comfortable.
I think i will try grab a test ride on one and take it from there. Glad you enjoyed your trip!
Hi Steve. Any vibration???
Not that I remember.
Thanks for the info and opinion. Well done. You've got great music tastes, too, my man! 😊👍
Thank you fror watching.
Led and the lads rocking the CTX.
Thank you for watching.
Steve were you ever a drummer for Wishbone Ash
Thank you for watching. No, I cannot play any musical instruments.
Thinking of getting one rare in the uk I have a vtx custom 1300 but its loud and horrible on the motorway.
Thank you for watching. The CTX is a very nice cruiser.
God, do you look majestic on that ride good sir.
Thank you for watching.
As a 3rd bike what you need is a dirt bike. Mine's a DR650 because it's stone-axe simple and a lot of fun, but there are many choices.
Thanks for watching and advice on that elusive 3rd bike.
Do you still have the bike or have you changed it
Thank you for watching. I changed it two years ago for a BMW K1600. I wanted more luggage space to get back to continental touring. The CTX was good for day trips, but not for two week holidays.
@@StevenUpton14-18 what a bike the BMW is , wish you all the best both with the bike and the channel, thanks again for the reply
@@pureloyalist9277 and thank you for taking an interest.
Assuming from your license plate you are a resident of Upton Terrycloth ! Had to say it . Ripper ! Giggles from across the Pond in Cali.! Cheerio!
Thank you for watching and posting. It was a microfibre cloth, nothing as common as a Terrycloth.
How is it 2up
Thank you for watching. Carrying a pillow is no different to riding solo. Having said that, I do not race around; I cruise. This bike has plenty of power for two-up with luggage for cursing around.
.. Did you find the rear linked brakes to be fairly week?
I am not a particularly fast rider and tend to let gravity do much of my braking. So, have not really noticed this. By habit I use both brake lever and pedal at the same time without thinking, so have not really tried to see how well the split braking works. Must give it a go and see if it is weak.
Great review and great taste in music !
Thank you for watching.
+1 for Eddie Van Halen playing
Eruption. RIP
Great review on the bike.
Thank you for watching.
Nice ride would love to have one thanks for the look
Thank you for watching. It is a very nice bike to cruise around on. I am taking it to Germany next month for two weeks.
I love the Cruise Control on some bikes .The palm grip is nice however .I crushed my wrist in the 80's and get bad bad cramps so I have to use the palm grip thing .
Thank you for watching. I now have a BMW K1600 with a cruise control. But still have the palm rest.
Good information regarding your bike thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching.
can you fit a full face helmet in the side bags?
No, but you can get two in the topbox.
Great job on the review, oh and excellent choice of music man 👍
Thank you for watching.
What diff between this and a golwing?
The CTX has the engine and drive train from the Pan European. The gold Wing is a six cylinder 1800 cc, whilst the CTX is four cylinder, 1260 cc. GW has cruise control and adjustable air suspension. Its also quite a bit bigger and offers far more luggage space. You also get other stuff on the GW such as GPS, integrated sound system etc.
You could say that the CTX is a smaller and cheaper little brother to the GW.
Steven Upton it will do everything a Goldwing can do
I have had three Gold Wings, a 1200 and two 1500's, but never an 1800. The one thing that the CTX does not have that I would like is the cruise control. Otherwise similar in comfort and riding position.
However, Honda does not make the CTX anymore. It had a very short production run to use up surplus Pan European engines.
Steven Upton looks like you got yourself a great bike. Enjoy
Steven Upton my fav bike is the blackbird although they had braking problems
If you lift the handle on the top box and then lift up and pull back it will disengage the top box and you can carry away.
Really! I have never tried this. Will do so now. I could not understand why it had a handle. Now I know.
Your welcomed.
Tried it, and it works! I am moving the GPS down to the centre of the bars and when I have done that I will make a part 3 video and include the top box removal. Thank you.
Cee Bailey and GIVI make windscreens. I don't know how much of an improvement they are over the Honda windscreen. Cheers !
David - Thank's for watching. Since getting a Corbin saddle (see part 2 video) I am sitting slightly lower and no longer get any buffeting around my head.
You have great taste in music!
Oh thank you!
How many CC’s?
Never mind 1300 or 1261 to be exact
Thank you for watching. The CTX is 1261 cc.

Check out the Yamaha FJR1300
Thank you for watching. I have owned a FJR1300. Great bike; however, killed my back with having to lean forward. I changed it for a BMW K1600 which has a more upright sitting position.
Yea, I had to put risers on mine, same reason. Otherwise...fun bike.
Damm! never thought of risers, they are a lot cheaper than a new bike!
I find the mirrors are useable, but not perfect. But I am 6’ 1”.
@@StevenUpton14-18 It seems a great sunday bike.

I think that this marks the end of Honda being used by Paramedic responders unless they supply detachable panniers.
Thank you for watching. They might switch to BMW or look at the new Honda NT1200.
Just save your money and buy you an ST1300 Pan. Youll get board of this bike in no time.
I have had it for over two years now and still not bored. On a Pan I lean forward too much. On the CTX I sit upright. It's better for my back as I get chronic pain if have to lean forward.
3 years w ctx 1300, still very happy to ride it

ST1300 didn't have all that gear but was a better bike.
Thank you for watching.
Honda doesn't make them anymore.
Thank you for watching. I believe that they were only produced for one year to use up surplus Pan European engines and drive trains.
@@StevenUpton14-18 why do you think so? , i thin they made them for 2 years
@@brabus8317 You may very well be correct. I thought I had read it somewhere. I do think it a shame they did not develop the concept over a few years.
If they had added the DCT transmission and a cruise control I would have bought one. It would be about half the price of the new Gold Wing.
Try a Yamaha tdm 900 for a bit of cheap fun say a 2002 model .
Thank you for watching and your tip.
no cruise control?
No, it would benefit from one. Also a 6th gear would be good.
