As an FJR and ST1300 fan this definitely does appeal to me. It looks more like a street glide than a sport tourer.

Dubbs, I want to thank you for all your videos. I did get a good deal on the base blue model this spring (2016). I bought it in great part to the "feel" I got from watching you ride yours and tell me all about it. Your Vlogs are awesome! I totally understand your feelings about the big H. I continue to follow you and wish you the best on your next bike!

You hit the nail on the head with the cons. Especially the warranty and the lack of knowledge of the bike from Honda dealers. I bought a standard being told it had audio and went and bought the audio for exorbant price. And the aftermarket is nihil. I too was pissed at the resale value. But I still love mine especially after adding all the upgrades like fogs, grips, luggage and audio. Good luck with the darkside, Dubbs.

    Heartfelt farewell to CTX1300,
Wondered about these facts with this bike, but due to body injuries, job injuries. I have to use what's out there for guys like myself.

It sucks that you bought into something that just didn't meet the market. I nearly bought one after having the CTX700, but being completely unsupported by the aftermarket tuned me into the fact that they were going to not carry it through 2016. It really appealed to me, but ultimately I settled on something else.

Awesome video, one of the reasons I was even looking at getting one of these (and 'almost' did) was due to your videos. The same reasons you mentioned here though, were the reasons I didn't because I did extensive research and test-rode the bike at different locations at least 3 times (with extended test rides). In the end, it just wasn't going to work for me and I actually wanted to really love the bike - I love the looks and overall thought behind it, Honda just didn't execute it correctly in my opinion and it just got lost in its purpose and target audience.
I've ridden many bikes and I ended up getting my 3rd FJR1300, which I didn't expect to go after but it just fits my needs. I had a 2007 Goldwing in between the FJR's, but then again I love the Yamaha FJR1300 and I just got through getting mine altogether. with the way I wanted to set it up. I don't have the patience to make vlogs, so my hat's off to you.
When I was looking at the CTX1300, I had the blue deluxe version all lined up and at about $9k and all was set. I just had a lot of the issues that you mentioned here and I couldn't see how it was going to work for me. Love your videos though and wish you were closer to my area because I think you'd be good to have a group ride with, definitely keep up the great work and I'll keep checking in what bike you got (regardless of what you got). I really do think Honda owes you for just driving the value of the bike down the way they did so quickly, that was ridiculous and painful for those that bought it in good faith at or near full price. They should have sent all of you a discount offer for your next bike in order to keep the faith. Unfortunately life just doesn't work that way, but trust me you are fully entitled to feeling burned by Honda in that respect.
Great job and keep it up!!!

DubbsRider, You have great videos and it's always good to hear the true reviews of all levels of riders for all types of bikes. Your honest opinions will help others in their decisions to purchase the bike that is right for them. It was your test ride video of the Honda F6B that sold me in my decision between the CTX1300 and the F6B. I live in Maine and also have a limited riding season but the bike with the right riding gear will give me a good shot at 7-8 months of riding (if I'm lucky :)
Good luck to you in your decision and I hope to see some future videos from you! Stay safe and keep riding!

Here, in Estonia (and I think in EU general), if dealer (or seller) tells you a "fact" and that ends up being false, you can take the merchandise back. One of the car manufacturers (Citroen) suddenly shortened warranty from 3 years to 2 (in EU, most things have 2 year warranty, because most manufacturers don't want any hassle, I'm not sure how to translate it, but if the product has fault within 2 years, manufacturer can be responsible, if you can prove it. First 6 months seller has to pay for the expertise, then 1,5 years the buyer. This is not a warranty, but most manufacturers don't want the hassle, so they give 2 years of warranty). Citroen failed to tell this to their dealers so dealers still sold cars with "3" years of warranty. It all came out out when car broke down and dealer asked factory for parts and factory said "pay first". Then Citroen told to dealers "sorry, all the cars you sold past 6 months have 2 years of warranty". Dealers then had to give warranty for the cars out of their own "pocket".
Hondas here have a really good warranty. My car had a fault (I actually jumped with a car... ) and warranty was over for years. Then I told Honda that I have a problem, Honda made an inquiry and factory said that its their fault, they cave me a new part (which cost more than I made in a month) for free. Few years later I discovered rust on my car, Honda then replaced the rusty door. I trust Honda because of that...

I feel bad that you just bought a bike that didn't sell well so corporate decided to unvalue the bike to get it off the show room floor . Now your bigger problem is trying to unload your bike. Or roll the existing loan onto a other bike . Pick wisely my brother in the wind

First let me say you did an excellent job on this video for that I say thank you. You hit the nail right on the head. I watched your blog all last winter just after I purchased my 1300CTX. I enjoyed every one of them. But after putting 7000 kms I felt the exact same way as you about the bike. When Honda drove down the price that was the last straw. I had the heated grips but no cruise sucked out loud. Anyway I look forward to seeing what your next bike will be...me I dealt the CTX In for a BMW K1600 GTL. Love it. All the best my friend... ..If you liked the CtX why would you get rid of it just because the prices dropped. It's not like your getting your money back. Just ride it and enjoy! obviously the bike is lacking somewhere to want to go in a different direction. Maybe it's the sucky suspension?

@@340rps I agree. I have heard a lot of positive comments about the CTX 1300 deluxe. However it does seem that people get rid of them after having them for a few thousand miles. One needs to try a bike out before purchasing it, one year warrantee on CTX700DX, 2016 MODEL, but found a lot that needed to be done to personalize it for myself.
I will keep it, but am looking for larger bike and is for North West Washinton State to North Carolina to visit family and visit family in other state on way back home, but it has to be a bike that I can handle and not be told by other people that because of my size can operate anything, which I cannot.

Daniel I still have my CTX 1300, but I have had some issues with it recently from a license plate falling off, in which I am going to get that fixed soon, to a problem with the top latch vibrating loose on roads like I-40 west in Oklahoma, and opening while underway, to how the suspension shocks were set to 1 as a default from the factory , that is the stiffest part of the suspension , and makes it rough to ride on bumpy roads, but not knowing that at first, made me question if it was really for me, aside from how I got screwed on the initial MSRP, in which pissed me off, and when I asked for a rebate from Honda America, the guy laughed at me on the phone, even when I asked for a rebate, but, I was told that the rebates were given randomly every other month, both before and after they had discontinued the bike.I am now trying to work with my dealership where I got it, to see what they can do.
When I first got it, I was told that I was the first in Northwest Arkansas to own it. Little did I know, at the time, that I was maybe one of the first "suckers" who got screwed over by the poor marketing. I still have my bike, but every day that goes by, I start thinking that I made a BIG mistake in getting it, and the CTX 1300 forum even made me mad with some members who could care less, and so I stopped going to the forum.

+DubbsRider , I completely understand on your decision to trade in your CTX 1300. I love my bike, but sometimes it bugs me about the low resale value of the bike. I should have waited too before I got mine because of the price. It made me think twice about the way Honda markets the bike. When I am able to, I am thinking about trading in my bike for either a Harley Davidson or a Victory because of the resale value as part of the reason, but until then, I will keep it. I think that Honda made a mistake on the Saddlebags. The no cruise control is something that I had gotten used to not having, but then again, all the cruise control is, is a Throttle Lock, that I can get after market at my local dealer. I guess the seating for me is fine. I do wish that there was a better way of putting floorboards as standard equipment.

Hi Dubbs, this was a very good video. You did great in front of the camera. A lot better than most. I have been following your videos on and off and was really interested in the CTX myself for a while, but couldn't afford one. I have since picked up a used 2006 ST1300 last fall with only 6800km / 4300 miles. I love the V4 and the Sport Touring bike. I agree with you on a lot of points. The bike was priced to high and sold poorly because of it. Honda dropping the price on it so quickly certainly didn't inspire confidence (investment wise) in riders either. What a shame. I also think because of the price point it was to close to in both price & feel to the F6B. Anyway, just rambling here. I hope you are happy with your new bike and keep up the "in front of the camera" videos. Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada

I sold a Goldwing 1800, a ST1300, a Street Glide and an FJR to scale back to only two bikes. One was a CTX1300. Thankfully I was able to get the CTX for about 5 grand less than list price.
IMO Honda completely marketed it wrong. They should have never tried to chase the Harley market trying to copy the style of the Street Glide. They could have put it out there like they did but at a more realistic price and then offered the bike with the touring windshield and tour box and asked the price they were trying to get. Not making cruise available was a BIG mistake. They did the same with the F6B but later wised up and offered cruise on it.
Had they offered the CTX in full tour mode they would have drawn many of the senior crowd that can no longer deal with the weight of the Goldwing and I think they were scared that might possibly hurt the sales of their flagship bike, the Wing.
I know you spoke of having lost so much value that it left a bad taste for the deal you got on the CTX but fact is the value has dropped to a point that I don't think it will fall much farther if any. It will just float around the area it is at and the fact that it is now a one year only model could probably cause the market to hold firm or begin to slightly rise as less and less are available.

I rode a CTX1300 for a day and have some observations good and bad. Starting with the bad, the riding position caused lower bad soreness and slight leg fatigue after a few hours. The handling feels really top heavy and in the corners I really had to work the counter steering to the point my arms got fatigued. I think the weight of the motor and the geometry of the bike is not conducive for easy handling. The whine from the motor was annoying. Positives were the braking and suspension. The ABS braking was really impressive. The suspension reminded me of a touring bike but was stiff enough in the corners. The bike is very quick out of the gate and the power bands are really even. Not much shifting which is really nice. Overall I have mixed feelings about this bike. I don't think it's a bad bike just not a bike I would choose.

Hi Dubbs, First off I need to thank you for all your helpful videos on how to install stuff. You walked me through things more times then you know. Also thank you for answering my fb messages. I ended up trading mine out for a Road glide 2016.. they gave me 12.5 for the CTX and yes it put me 5 grand in the hole. Funny thing is now with the Milwaukee 8 coming out it has beaten down the value of everything prior. So now that I’m ahead , I’m upside down again !! Damn Harley.. anyway I truly miss my CTX .. I think the bike is a great secondary bike .. I loved the look and the ride.. it turned many heads. One thing for me was the gear ratio sucked on the CTX .. you didn’t mention that in your video. I was following this bike when they came out, but didn't like that there wasn't much aftermarket, and a high price tag to boot. Now I'll be waiting to see your new bike reveal.. I agree with much of what you said, but I picked one up about a month ago for much less than what the original people paid. But I question Honda asking so much money when the saddlebags and the plastic storage areas are fairly cheaply made, etc. Much of the bike is plastic, but made to look like metal, one of the reasons Harleys sell for the prices they sell for is because they are metal, which gives a better perception of quality than cheap plastic. I just bought the trunk on eBay, it is cheap plastic too, and it cost me $600, $100 dollars cheaper than what it costs at a dealer, they're asking for more than what things are worth. Having said that, as I have gotten used to the bike over the last month or so, I really love it, and I think I got a good value for what I paid, but I wouldn't consider buying it for what they sell for new.

I am in the UK and currently looking at some very good used models with low mileage at very reasonable prices. I am hesitating though over the lack of a cruise control to the extent that I might well go for a slightly older, but good used gl1800 GoldWing which has everything. Having just sold my 2018 Harley Ultra Limited, the original idea was to get something a little bit cheaper, smaller, and lighter, and the CTX seemed to fit the bill. You went from a GoldWing to the CTX - how did you find that? Did you miss the extras you get with a Wing?

You have to expect to pay a premium for being an early adopter for anything (except big name supercars, they go up in value). If you want to be first you pay more and act as a kind of test market to expose any unknown faults etc. Sounds like you should have got a newer Goldwing or kept the one u had but watching the vid when u first got the CTX home, u were really happy and that's worth something, and it's still a good bike plus you learnt from it. Personly I'd never buy a brand new vehicle, better to wait 6-12 months and pay half the price with all the running in and initial servicing taken care of but then being the 1st owner has no value to me whereas others value it a lot and it makes them happy. Liked you easy honest style in your vid though.

I have cruise, it's great. $500+ fitting. Otherwise throttle locks. BTW, don't really need cruise control. The throttle is very plush. Input is minimal spring tension well weighted grip position near on ideal. Just get up to hway speeds. Adjust wrist to position. Then hang off the bars. You won't deviate greatly off speed, you'll be comfortable for awhile. You might readjust here and there but it's a very comfy bike in all regards. Sometimes I forget to even put it on cruise😉😂

I would really like to know as well. Obviously the bike must not be a really good bike but maybe a good bike. Maybe in fact it does not have that wall effect with the engine and may be boring to ride. I just don't know because I have not heard of me comments about it directly.

Sorry to see that you lost out on your investment. However this shows that, as a general rule, one should NEVER purchase a motorcycle in its first year of release. You were just asking to take a bath on the resale. Regarding the shortcomings of the CTX 1300, I have to say those failings should have been obvious to any experienced motorcyclist. I sat on the bike at the Progressive motorcycle show in late 2014. Within a couple minutes I had identified some glaring flaws even without putting the bike on the road. I could tell that the windscreen was way too low. I could tell that the storage compartments in the fairing were useless. I could see that the access to the panniers was poor and the bags were too narrow to fit a helmet. In addition, I could feel a hard spot at the rear of the seat and could see that the step in the seat locked you in place -- not good. I should say that I am the owner of an ST 1100, one of the predecessors of the CTX 1300. In almost every respect my 17-year-old ST 1100 is a better machine. It has more power. It handles better. It has much better wind protection. It has a better seat for the passenger. It has better mirrors. It has better bags, an optional top case. It has more fuel capacity. And it's easier to work on. That just shows you how much Honda screwed up when they made the CTX 1300.
FWIW, at that same trade show I met a Honda executive and told him exactly what was wrong with the bike. I even wrote it down, point by point, on a note and handed it to him. I attended the 2016 Moto show a few days ago. I happened to see the same Honda exec. I reminded him about that note. His face turned white, he shook his head and said "I'm afraid to say you were right on every one of those points. Japan really missed the mark with the CTX 1300. Our designers thought it was good enough to make it sort of look like a bagger, without getting the fine points right."
Honda needs to get some new executives and new designers if they want to avoid this kind of mistake in the future. It is unfortunate that Honda expects customers to pay too much for products that are not designed intelligently and not sorted out before they were released to the marketplace

Wow. I demo-ed one as I was looking for a replacement for my 91 ST. I was intrigued by the cruiser/tourer fusion with showcasing the engine. I also found the same flaws as you but also found the seat uncomfortable. There was no way I was paying for a new one. I thought Honda did a half Ass job with it. As usual Honda just discontinues instead of fixing the flaws. I am not surprised about the bad resale maybe some day I'll find one cheap.

    • @340rps
      @340rps 7 років тому

Just bought one of these used and sorry I did not insist on a test drive as now have buyers remorse. Coming off a Kingpin, cruiser is the last thing the CTX is. The horrible suspension is probably my biggest gripe, then there is all the other little things. If I don't grow to love it, it will be going soon. I think the latter will be the case .

I left video after sport touring market comment 3:08 (IT IS NO ST1300!!!!) That's why the bike flopped in US. You guys marketed & reviewed it way off the mark. It is a baby goldwing, particularly the F6B. One is 1800cc & boxxer 6, the other cheaper and 130cc & V4. Think that way and you will get a cheaper(2020) bike, a lighter bike and be very happy with what you have. Think "sports tourer" and you are fucked! Granted this is 3yrs old as a post, but in 2020 surely a bagger is well known. No one would call a bagger a sports tourer. I love mine, I too baught it to learn how to ride a bigger bike, I will be going the boxxer 6 in due course. My other bike is a VFR1200F DCT. Chalk & cheese. One zippy, one lazy. But 2x sweet V4s!
Think entry level GL1800(F6B) and you WILL NOT be disappointed.

After watching most of your ctx1300 vids it seems that your delusion with your bike came from Honda's failed attempt with the ctx1300 rather than actual shortcomings with the bike itself. This isn't Honda's first failed rodeo and a little more comparative research before jumping on a $17k bike would've shown you some alternatives on the same class. BMW for example, the R1200RT which has features Honda will never build on their motorcycles.
