Here's a quote from her about the switch of location from Iceland to the Mojave desert: - 'You know what, I'm going to be freezing. I'm going to be miserable, I'll be complaining all day, I'll be sorry that I ever chose a cold place. So I said, 'Let's do it in the desert, it'll be warm,' and it would be sort of the opposite, because even though you think of deserts as being hot, they're still sort of frozen in terms of there's no vegetation and they're very desolate. I thought that that would still work as a visual, but then we got there and it was like 20 degrees below zero, it was bitterly cold, and I was barefoot. I was barefoot for the entire video, and then it started pouring rain and everyone got really sick, and it just actually turned out to be a really miserable experience

Before this, Madonna had been on a bit of a hiatus following the Evita film, the birth of her first child and this was the very first release from the Ray of Light album. Her last complete studio album before this was 1995's Bedtime Story which was great in its own right but very R&B influenced, and then she came out with Evita and then the Something to Remember compilation, which was largely ballads. Coupled with her motherhood and more serious work, there was a sense that perhaps Madonna was starting to wind down, to grow old and to fade away... ...and then she came out with Frozen and the rest of the Ray of Light album, which completely flipped that perception onto its head. It was a real rennaissance for Madonna, especially with the new William Orbit-produced music. To see Madonna come out with something so artistic, so different, so beautifully understated was quite startling. It was also the first time that we had heard Madonna's post-Evita trained voice in something other that straightforward ballads. As for the video, this particular gothic witch like appearance is especially memorable, and the symbolism of being frozen by her love interest's lack of emotional availability is there to see - the song is essentially one of extreme female angst, longing and heartbreak. I love the imagery of the magic of the earth flowing into her hands, empowering her. The dancing style is inspired by Indian classical dance, with all the intricate and graceful hand movements (called 'hasta' in the Bharatanatyam dance style), and by her past as a protege of Martha Graham. You can also see use the mehndi (henna) artwork on her hands, and the Hindu sacred 'Om' symbol on her palm (that's the symbol that looks like a '3' with an extra tail added on). They had to have two lookalike dancers to do the other two figures, hence you can't see their faces clearly. It's bleakly gorgeous, it's spiritual and transcendential, and I love it.
