  • This episode we are down in the Bay of Plenty in some beautiful blue water. We were fortunate enough to encounter plenty of fish such as, Kingfish, pink Mao mao, big Trevally, Tarakihi and more. Along the way we try to help with some tips and techniques we use to increase breath hold and Spearfish deeper.

Wow…so nice. I am heading back to NZ after a lot of years and am looking forward to getting out in the water again in my home waters of the far north. Will probably pop in as I’m going to need a new wetsuit to prepare for winter dives. So excited.

Hi, can you tell me how to calculate the length of bands for a spear gun? It's 95 cm

At 2:26 it looks like you have a little rubber band holding the flopper flush. Whats the thinking there mate?

I often use flopper rings on my spear to improve shaft flight, accuracy and line of sight. Works really well. The Flopper ring with come off the flopper down the shaft when spearing the fish so doesn't impede flopper engaging.

Your breath holds are so long!!! I dive to 5m and my diaphragm starts to spasm. I'd say about a 5th of what I can do on the couch. Also, diving without your snorkel is interesting. When I've tried this, I feel I need to come up earlier because I don't want to breath out until I'm above water again. And then I need to find the snorkel and empty it. With the snorkel in, I breathe out half of my lung contents on the way up (near the surface) and then a short sharp blow to empty the rest f my lungs and the snorkel. Is it bad to dive with the snorkel in?

Try relax and take your time. Make small progressions and be patient. When you are doing a strenuous/deeper dive it can be more comfortable to have snorkel out, as your body will relax more with your mouth closed. As well as other safety reasons. I would suggest not to blow your air out before getting to surface, I know plenty of people that do what you do, but it is not particularly safe practice.

Once during pool training, I’d have a pretty bad day but, I pushed it too far in the pool doing a dynamic. This was with no snorkel. As I exhaled my lungs when I popped my head up, I blacked out.
Imagine if that happened to you one day while you were exhaling on the way back up, before even breaching the surface?
