    I would genuinely cherish an Autograph from mark, he’s been a huge inspiration to me throughout my reefing experience!

    I got my first reef tank when I was eight years old, it was a ~3 gallon gimmick tank called the "bio bubble". It was one of those acrylic dome tanks that you keep jellyfish in. It had accordion-folded walls that would stretch up to the water level so the dome could be removed for maintenance. Needless, to say, I had a lot of fun with that tank. I read and re-read all of my reefing magazines and books every day, and the highlight of my week was when I went to the aquarium store to get something new. The same exact fun followed me from the 3g to the 24g, I was loving it.
    Then I started doing things on R2R, posted a build thread, and my bubble broke. My perfect little tank was a 'newbie tank' because I wasn't growing $1000 acros or keeping candy basslets. I was embarrassed, and started buying things that the 'popular' reefers had, despite not liking them. Bigger and bigger tanks, but I never sought my vision in full.
    I've begun to return to my roots, I think. I spend far more time reading than I did before, and though I do use Instagram from time to time, those tanks are their tanks, not mine. I'm more than happy collecting weirdo inverts and 'ugly' brown fish because they are what keep me intrigued.
    Can't wait for Reefstock TN! Love the Chattanooga aquarium, used to go all the time as a kid. It's so incredibly magical.

    Enjoyed the show. I've been in the hobby for 30 years. For me, it's way more fun now than in the past. With today's technology, much more information and connections. Only con for me is the elevated prices on some of the hottest coral but if you wait a couple of years you can still have them. I don't need to flex by buying $1000 polyps.

    Great chat fellas! I guess if you pay attention to forums and certain content creators, it’s not as fun, but then there are shows like RT and Reef Beef that keep you engaged and feed your nostalgic mind. I love oddball corals and animals, but I also love the “simple” corals too. The fact that we can keep these animals in glass boxes in our homes is still fucking cool. I love face to face interactions with fellow hobbyists, it’s what keeps me engaged and hopefully keep others passionate about the hobby. Cheers!

    Thank you Raj. I really needed that. I get to comparing my tank to others and all these great tanks on the socials.
    Only been in hobby for just over a year. Getting first split on my frogspawn ever. My mushrooms r splitting, everything is starting to grow (don’t got a lot of coral yet) but comparing to last year me I’m doing great and learned a lot.

    I’ve been in the hobby for 45 years. I’m proud of being an old time reefer and hobbyist. I’m proud of my achievements over the years.
    I sometimes feel it isn’t as fun as it once was. Why? social media. Times change, I get it, however, there use to be more mutual respect among our community before social media platforms. It’s changed. You can learn more in an hour buy reading an article in coral magazine than watching alot of content creators online.
    I have a great deal of knowledge from my years of keeping fish and coral, but I rarely post or share as I don’t have time to deal with uranus reef keepers.

      I started in the hobby around 5 years now. I started off learning from forums, and youtube videos mainly. Looking back, the more I was on social media the more I found myself focusing on the wrong things and was not getting good, vital information I needed. Reef2reef didn't teach me anything besides to stay away from forums. I learned so much from making mistakes and turned to buying books for the questions I had. I wish I did that when I bought my first fish and coral.

  • @dusk1947
    @dusk1947 Рік тому

    "Just as much fun", really depends on personal goals and proficiency level.
    I know, I have the most fun setting up a new system, or when I'm diving in and learning about a new aspect. That is the point where I am most engaged as a hobbyist. But, that's not everyday.
    And I am the least enthusiastic when I'm managing pests or quarantining new livestock. Which is critical, but it's also tedious and puts me off as a reef keeper.
    For the most part, this hobby is really about watching what you've built grow; and I think too many of us forget that: Letting your box of water become it's own partial ecosystem. Watching juvenile fish mature. Seeing a coral frag reach colony size. Seeing an invert spawn and watching the second or third generation establish. It is always enjoyable, and that is the core of reefing.

    But, it's not always the main points of discussion in this hobby. Content creators tend to focus on new set-up's, or new equipment, or new coral; because that change and debate drives interest and generates new content. And frankly it's more exciting. But that content inundated us (as content creators drive most of the discussion), and that feeling of New-new-new starts to become the perception. Browsing social media and seeing jaw dropping photos of corals imparts nothing about that path taken to reach it. Photo-editing? Year's spent managing pests? Tedious hours into nutrient management, spot-feedings, & water quality? Let along waiting for the coral to grow? We just see a photo and think that's were we're supposed to be.
    Yet the best content is still an overview of a 10 year or 15 year old thriving tank, and understanding how that hobbyist did it, knowing how long it took them. It's not a video that can be cranked out each week, as it takes 10 or 15 years of prep. And it's also one of the things Jake did so well, he'd put out a video on nothing more than periodic maintenance and coral trimming. Because he never lost sight of the core hobby. He'd just take viewers on a journey of those in-between years, watching the tanks grow. That's one of the reason the Reef Builders studio is so awesome, you can capture the less exciting but foundational part of the hobby on a multitude of tanks. And it has a grounding effect.
    And on the flip side, do I really want “excitement” to be the main goal? Mark hits it on the head at around 47:00. Is my goal a dopamine hit??? For some, maybe. But for me, no.
    I personally prefer “relaxation” over excitement. I love this hobby most when I can walk up to my tank, sit in my recliner, and get lost watching it. It’s meditative and helps me manage stress. And that optimal point is somewhere in-between. There’s not much new going on, just growth. And yet, they're aren’t many problems either. It’s just stable. Which sounds completely boring, but it’s by far the most relaxing point of my reefing hobby. And that is when I enjoy it most.

    This is why i joined local clubs, In person meet up is so much better than social media, i love my freshwater club and reef club, going to other club members houses and seeing their fishroom in person, asking questions and just having a good time.
    Our freshwater club started a local yearly event, this year is our 3rd year. We weren't sure what the turnout would be, but were blown away by the turnout, I can't remember the exact number but over 1,000 people showed up on our first year, for a one day event. Last year we did 2 days and right now it's 100% freshwater.
    I did ask some of the local saltwater shops, I'm very hopeful for one to be a vendor!! I know last year i had alot of people asking to see saltwater but were disappointed its all freshwater. So I'm trying to bring all of the aquarium lovers together, It's not easy but I'm not going down quietly!!
    Love the session guys!!

    I find Dark Mark entertaining, I appreciate his point of view. Actually he and Jake where the first Utube/pod cast talks that really resonated with me. I was heavily involved in the hobby from 1985-1997 when I moved across country and then life got in the way of starting up again. The bug has hit me in my old age and I have the added incentive that my 9 yo grandson is interested in learning and helping me. It’s been interesting catching up with what I have missed in the last 25 years, guess I won’t be building anymore 5’ counter current air stone protien skimmers 😂

    It’s definitely all hobbies , like Mark said stepping back from social media getting mindful with your aquarium , being curious and grateful is the antidote to burnout. Personal goals also help but you can only setup so many tanks.
    I’m a new reef hobbiest and I can say I have LOVED the last 9 months of reefing. I am so grateful for Jake ,reef builders, and reef therapy for slicing through all the online bullshit and getting me to the fundamentals of reef keeping.

    I wish there was an actual reefing club nearby that actually met or did activities. Clubs and social groups of all types have been on the decline since the 60's. The book 'Bowling Alone' by Robert Putnam is all about this, and is an extremely sobering read.

    It seems to me that the hobby is mainly about creating. Making something beautiful or unique or successful, not necessarily keeping that creation static or keeping it going once successful.

    • @dusk1947
      @dusk1947 Рік тому

      I'd agree entirely. Or at least, I'd agree it's the focus of content creators, and those who post on media. In other words, you nailed the focus of those who drive the public conversation.
      However, for many, this hobby is about keeping these animals thriving long-term. That just doesn't seem to be a sexy conversation to drive interest....
      How's your tank? "oh great. no changes, same corals as last time. They've just grown another 6 inches"... That's a dream answer for many, but it doesn't make viral video's week after week.

    I think the Hobby is much better since the knowledge of keeping stuff alive is so much better than when I started back in 1988. Yes I agree that the social media ball busters are a drag but I just ignore and block that stuff. People tend to grow balls behind the keyboard and don't necessarily say stuff if they were in person. This is probably why things seemed better IRL club meetings.
    As far as topics I have always been trying to create a dedicated clam tank and use it as a filter for my system but is it me or clams are just not as hardy as they used to be? I used to keep clams for over 10 years in a low tech deep sand bed tank with metal halides doing absolutely no water changes and no water testing. Now I have auto water testing and better filters they just don't last as long or they tend to be super sensitive.
    I have a lot of hobbies too including building guitars and figure painting. I'm just a collector I guess.
