Yeah, it's pretty much Yoshi's Tropical Freeze. Excellent level design, fun gameplay, unique level theming, and even down to the most levels having their own assigned music. It's probably yoshi's best, in my opinion. Island is nostalgic, but it can be absolutely brutal at times, especially when 100%ing it

Yoshi's Story gets unfairly compared to Yoshi's Island when it wasn't even trying to be a direct sequel. one small correction, but in Yoshi's story the number of levels available in a page is dependant on how many big hearts you find in the previous page, so if you find none it's only level 1 of the next page, if you find 1 heart 1 and 2 are open etc.
Great video! I appreciate the more positive outlook on Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's New Island. Those games aren't nearly as bad as most people seem to think.
interesting to see how slightly experimental they did with Yoshi only to try to keep the Island/Story adventure be it's main stick. I remember when I got Yoshi’s Island DS I stayed up all night playing that game. In fact the first time I lost a life was on either world 5 or 6, whichever one had that vertical scrolling section with the falling blocks. It also has my favorite title theme out of the Yoshi games so far.
Yoshi's Island DS is so underrated. I'm glad someone is actually saying good things about it. I did find New to be really boring tho. It's not the worst game ever, but I really didn't enjoy my playthrough

I remember getting yoshi's touch and go for my birthday when i was a kid, and yes i was in fact pissed, when i played it as a kid i couldn't believe that was all there was to it.
Completing OG Yoshi’s island literally gives you hidden levels. Idk I love your videos. But I think the reason people think the OG game is the best isn’t that confusing. It’s the fact making a game that good with nothing to go off of goes to show how dominant Nintendo was as a company in the 90’s literally making the best games of many of their franchises to this day with taking so many risks and making crazy decisions (ala dkc’s graphic design, or starfox’s chip, or super fucking Metroid). Yoshis island not only is by far the best yoshi game but arguably one of the best games of all time. I remember watching a dunkey video the other week where a split second slide showed it when he mentioned greatest games ever along w games like halo and others. It def aged that well.
I remember beating Yoshi's Story in one sitting and being absolutely pissed, I wasted $60 on something I could've rented for a $1 or $2 and that was me as a child thinking this.
32:09 *Yoshi's Story It's a little confusing because Nintendo actually did release a port of Yoshi's Island to GBA. By the way, you forgot to mention it. Apparently, it added a small amount of new content, which is kinda interesting. It's also the version of Yoshi's Island Nintendo wanted to re-release the most for some reason.

I'm glad as well I tried out the demo and really enjoyed but was really put off when people said the game was bad. Now that I know it was because of high expectations I might try out this game soon.
Give it 10 more years or so when it becomes old and people will start praising it all of sudden and calling it an “underrated gem” or some shit. I call it the Nintendo fanboy cycle where Nintendo fans start universally appreciating a game for what it is ONLY once it becomes old and then will start hating and bashing on the newest game in the series at the time. It’s sad, but that’s just how the Nintendo fanbase is like nowadays I’m afraid.

Kinda curious to replay Crafted World now. I didn't like it a whole bunch at launch but maybe I'll feel differently about it now... Maybe after Woolly World though lol, I absolutely adore that game
The GBA Prototype was part of the dev kits for the GBA, to show off how it worked and give code examples. (Or, if I'm misremembering, then it'd be like Mario 128 or Meowths' Party - tech demos!)
I had Yoshi's Safari as a kid from some box of SNES games my dad bought on clearance, but I never had a super scope to actually be able to play it. I begged him for months to get me one so I could finally play through this mystery Yoshi game, but he never did (probably couldn't find one by that point tbh, this was somewhere around the point that the n64 was transitioning to the gamecube). I've still never played it to this day.
tbh the only problems i have with new island are the lack of unique mid world bosses and baby mario's crying sound effect somehow being the worst it's ever been. Otherwise it's a fun charming little game that's really fun in short bursts
That Gameboy Camera story brought back memories of trading Gameboy games at school like it was the black market. I remember training one Pokemon game for all three Donkey Kong Lands.
Yoshi's "New" Island and Yoshi's Crafted World falls under what I call "the Uncharted Effect", where if an original game that had huge success in the past has sequels, it has to have a striking resemblance to it. This makes a lot of great games mediocre as people set the bar too high for such titles, any drastic changes to the formula or major deviation could very well break a game's reception, granted some criticism is warranted a bit more comes from those hanging on to the past looking for that "true" Yoshi's Island sequel (which will probably never come). This is why most games turn into the same cookie cutter projects that we seen time and again. P.s. Great video, enjoyed the nostalgia of seeing Yoshi Story again, my favorite one as well as Wooly World, The best one. 😅My apologies for the rant.
So I'm not gonna lie the title theme of Yoshi's New Island did legit scare me away from wanting to get the game when it was new and not really because I heard anything bad yet. If anything just the "New" Moniker was more of the killer since I was definitely jaded about the moniker at that point. Otherwise I never really thought it being super bad was accurate but because I associate Nintendo's "New" with milquetoast basicness I never felt compelled to get it and try. Also again that title theme definitely scared me for the OST. Thanks Sakurai for putting in Bandit Valley in Smash.
I remembered owning Topsy Turvy when I was young, and I don't recall it being bad. No one seems to be mentioning it in the chat so idk if what Gilly said is true
I loved that game as a kid and I still do. The tilting mechanics are just fine. If Gilly can't get a handle on them... well I don't know what to say, I personally have no problem using them.
I was probably just barely a teenager when Yoshi Touch and Go came out and bought it. I was so confused and then pissed off when I figured out the game was basically only a single level lol. Sold it back to Game Crazy for a few cents. Great video!
Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only person on this planet who likes Crafted World. It's pretty sad how a lot people hate on it for it's soundtrack alone. I'm not calling it a masterpiece or anything, Woolly World definitely had better music, but it's not worth getting upset about. I just simply turn the volume down and enjoy walking through the Cardboard World. They took a simple idea of an Arts-and-Craft environment that you would find in a Kindergarten Classroom, and made it look like something worthy of being in a Museum.
21:30 I would just like to add to what Gilly is saying. If you get 100s on all 8 levels of each world, you get two new levels: a harder bonus stage and a bonus challenge. The bonus challenges can also be played when you land on a flower on the roulette goal ring at the end of the stage (an incentive to find all 5 flowers). The challenges either give you items (accessed via the pause menu) or lives.
@@Hyper_Drud Yes. You unlock one new stage for each world simply by beating the game, no matter what the percent. The new stages are generally long and intensive, and really good, getting mileage out of some mechanics/enemies that are underused in the main game. Also, this gives a bit of margin for error when unlocking the original extra stages, since the game still requires 800 total points per world, but with the GBA-exclusive stages, that's now 800/900 instead of 800/800.
I agree 100% that Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island are overhated. I never understood why people hated them so much, because I personally really liked both of them.
i wonder if they will ever attempt to make Yoshi games jump into the 3rd dimension. they finally did it with Kirby recently, they did it with.. Wario on the gamecube (kinda)
For posterity, Pizza Boy GBA Pro on Android supports gyro for Yoshi Topsy Turvy, so that should make it a lot easier to play while capturing footage, especially if you have an Android-based retro handheld.
I loved Topsy Turvy and I have a good handle on the tilting mechanic, so I usually don't say that to anyone, but here I don't see what else it could be. A skill issue.
It would be really cool if one day a 3D Yoshi game was made and they included the early puzzle games maybe safari too using motion controls as side modes kind of like Kirby games mini games
I have heard your opinion on Yoshi's new island and have played it myself. While I don't normally agree, I do however respect your opinion and am happy you enjoyed the game more then others.
If it helps for future stuff, you can use mGBA on a 3DS or even a Vita(modded, of course) to emulate the motion control gimmick for games like Tilt n Tumble and I'm assuming Topsy Turvy, too.
The reason people, like me, don't like Crafted World because 100%ing it is hard is because it's a Yoshi game, a series of games that are designed for you to explore and try to 100% to get the most enjoyment out of them. If you played Wolly World, Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island, etc. without exploring and just making it to the end as fast as possible as if you were playing a Super Mario Bros. game, you'd be missing the point of the game, which is to explore and find secrets; it would make the game come off as empty if you played it like that. When the game fails at that core aspect of what is typically seen in a Yoshi game, then the game itself comes off as flawed to Yoshi fans. Furthermore, it feels like the level design is a missed opportunity, not being nearly as open and not taking advantage of the fact that both sides of the stage are completely viewable. The music and costumes are way worse than they were in Wolly World. All of these issues together makes for a very disappointing experience, one that I couldn't bare continuing after 15 hours or so.
@@Rediscool9 That’s simply not true. I just find many Switch games Nintendo releases to be fine quality, but are oftentimes dull, uninspired/derivative, poorly designed, and/or disappointing.
For instance, I think games like Club House Games, 1-2 Switch, and Arms are dull. I think games like Super Mario Maker 2, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 3 to be uninspired because they play it very safe as sequels to very unique Wii U games. I think Animal Crossing New Horizons, Yoshi’s Crafted World, and even Super Mario Odyssey and Luigi’s Mansion 3 are poorly designed. I think games like Kirby, Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis all are lacking in content. I can continue, but you get the gist.
@@nickk3077 You’re also always following TheBitBlock/Demeech so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you’re so hyper-critical about everything on the Switch. Im gonna assume you act like every GameCube game is an untouchable masterpiece just because they’re old games that you grew up with? Yes because Mario Sunshine isn’t poorly designed in the fucking slightest and works perfectly fucking fine.
@@nickk3077 Also, you say just Kirby as in all Kirby games on the Switch are lacking in content when it’s just Star Allies which is just one out of what five Kirby games on the Switch that had that problem and even then the free updates actually drastically helped Star Allies and gave the game a lot of content regardless. You’re bias against the Switch is so fucking obvious.
One of the reasons why people might hate the soundtrack of the new Yoshi's Island was best summed-up by Proton Jon. He started playing Yoshi's Island DS and found it very boring to play, but out of curiosity he decided to play the SNES Yoshi's Island OST on top of it and he immediately started enjoying it. Although the other Yoshi's Island OSTs are decent listens they tend to be a little too laid back to the point of where you feel sleepy. the SNES soundtrack for comparison had a lot more energetic pieces that made you feel like there might be an actual threat if you don't move, or was more playful in general tldr: The new OSTs are decent, but they put you to sleep.
Yoshi's Island DS using both the top and bottom screen for gameplay definitely hurt it when trying to play it on the Wii U Virtual Console. Though that was more so down to the DS Virtual Console's bad display options and the fact that approximately zero of them actually benefited this game in particular.
Yoshis safari shoulda been a pack In Game with the Wii zapper. Woulda been perfect and I actually thought they might have done a re release for the Wii. But nope.
The problem with the Yoshi series is that it hasn't really felt inspired, the only true masterpiece was Island for the SNES, because while DS wasn't that bad it didn't really feel very polished, then the 3DS one just felt lazy mostly because of the repetitive music, uninspired levels and very gimicky transformations, as the transformations for the SNES one didn't feel gimicky they were actually fun. My opinion on Wooly World is that it came out too late in the Wii U's life, so nobody really played it and the few people that did play it, did not stick around to finish it, since there had been better games released at that time which took the attention and time away from it. I don't really have any thoughts on Crafted World as I don't own it, and after what happened with Wooly World for me where I never finished it, I'm not going to purchase it anytime soon. I once asked one of my friends who loved the SNES game, what he thought of the other games after letting him play DS then 3DS and even Wooly World, and what he told me was that he didn't really like the art styles, and aside from that he just wasn't really into platformers anymore.
The non-stop Baby Mario crying in Yoshi's Island reminds me of the low HP warning from the early Pokemon games. It's meant to keep you alert but just comes off as annoying.
I’d imagine switch could control topsy turvy easier than the original hardware. Well once Nintendo online makes gb, gbc, and gba a thing in another expensive expansion pass.

Everyones favorite green dinosaur
Rex and Earl Sinclair says hi.

Yes, is why I do when I start Yoshi's Story
The original Yoshi’s Island is by far the best Yoshi game for me. And I have played every Yoshi games.
51:50 As a Kirby fan, I felt this
I bought Yoshi Touch & Go as a kid stupidly thinking it was a port of Yoshi’s Island or something similar to that. I was pissed.
I never want to hear that Astro’s Playroom is a glorified tech demo when Yoshi Touch and Go exists.
Yoshi Topsy Turvy wasn’t that bad, a 3/5 to me. Only time it got frustrating was any of the ball yoshi parts and the 2nd half of 6-5.
touch & go is great. i wish it had more content though but it's a great arcade game
Didn’t the GBA port also have its own extra stages on top of the initial ones?
Am I the only one who actually loves Yoshi's Island DS?
Yep
You could have mentioned the Yoshi island and super donkey protos since you mentioned the gba prototype
finally, another yoshi’s story fan!!
i wonder if they will ever attempt to make Yoshi games jump into the 3rd dimension.
they finally did it with Kirby recently, they did it with.. Wario on the gamecube (kinda)
This is raising my spirits
Not a RAID sponsorship in 2023 😭
Yoshis Story IS actually a sequel to YI. Baby Bowser is clearly a bit older in this game and he refers to Yoshi as Marios little pet.
Holy crap is that Figment in the background?
For posterity, Pizza Boy GBA Pro on Android supports gyro for Yoshi Topsy Turvy, so that should make it a lot easier to play while capturing footage, especially if you have an Android-based retro handheld.
Yoshi is my favorite mario character
Tetris Attack was one of my most played SNES games
They need to make a game like Yoshi's island but with zero babies in it, also they need to bring Brown Yoshi back
I can’t look at the Yoshi’s Cookie multiplayer without thinking of an egotistical raptor’s life story…
“At age 6 I was born without a face”
I loved yoshi safari as a young lad
I loved Topsy Turvy and I have a good handle on the tilting mechanic, so I usually don't say that to anyone, but here I don't see what else it could be. A skill issue.
It would be really cool if one day a 3D Yoshi game was made and they included the early puzzle games maybe safari too using motion controls as side modes kind of like Kirby games mini games
The handled Yoshi's Island sequels flesh out the story of the snes original.
I approve.
20:05 Everyone hated that baby.
And then Baby Wario showed up a couple years later.
Meanwhile, everyone loved Baby DK because his crying is the softest of them all~.
I like to think that Baby Bowser on Yoshi only exists due to the 'green donkey' joke at the end of the first game
I've tried a similar setup for the Analogue Pocket to play WarioWare Twisted but could never get it working, what extension cable are you using?
I got the yoshi touch and go as a kid, not knowing what it was. I only played it once and never again. Lol
Good shit!
Wario platformers Are the goat tho
I was on the nose of getting crafted world but I might get it if it's on sale
its ya boi, RRRRAAAID SHAADOW LEEGENDS
BRRRING~
Aren’t you the guy who basically hates almost every first-party Switch game?
Yoshi nes is one of my most played games on nso
My cousin actually got me that big wooly amiibo for 5 € 😂
I think you were a tad harsh on Yoshi's Universal Gravitation.
Woolly world > yoshi's island
Both are amazing, but nothing has beaten Yoshi's Island for me so far. Still one of my all-time favorite platformers.
NICE
i sometimes go back to yoshis wolly world
One of the reasons why people might hate the soundtrack of the new Yoshi's Island was best summed-up by Proton Jon.
He started playing Yoshi's Island DS and found it very boring to play, but out of curiosity he decided to play the SNES Yoshi's Island OST on top of it and he immediately started enjoying it.
Although the other Yoshi's Island OSTs are decent listens they tend to be a little too laid back to the point of where you feel sleepy. the SNES soundtrack for comparison had a lot more energetic pieces that made you feel like there might be an actual threat if you don't move, or was more playful in general
tldr: The new OSTs are decent, but they put you to sleep.
Can't believe Yoshi's Topsy Turvy got you to use your Analogue Pocket smh.
Forgot to add gba port of yoshi island ? Had extra content and some little changes
Yoshi's Island DS using both the top and bottom screen for gameplay definitely hurt it when trying to play it on the Wii U Virtual Console.
Though that was more so down to the DS Virtual Console's bad display options and the fact that approximately zero of them actually benefited this game in particular.
Been a minute since I’ve seen a Raid Shadow Legends ad. I was worried they might’ve stopped advertising on UA-cam.
Great video, as always
Yoshis safari shoulda been a pack In Game with the Wii zapper. Woulda been perfect and I actually thought they might have done a re release for the Wii. But nope.
yoshi's new island isn't the best but imo the way it looks is super pretty
Nice video
Eggs. Eggs! E-double G-S, Eggs!
The non-stop Baby Mario crying in Yoshi's Island reminds me of the low HP warning from the early Pokemon games. It's meant to keep you alert but just comes off as annoying.
Thoughts on Sonic Lost World’s Yoshi DLC?
I’d imagine switch could control topsy turvy easier than the original hardware. Well once Nintendo online makes gb, gbc, and gba a thing in another expensive expansion pass.
