    Mega Man, specifically classic, is my favorite video game series ever. I've never taken a proper look at them on the channel, so let's fix that today.

      Yeah that definitely kind of weirded me out. All of the three is good despite its flaws and three is good despite being unfinished and growing up I always liked it better than two. To each their own I guess. Two seemed kind of aged and underdeveloped to me. Maybe it was because I didn't really play them until after right was out on PS1. So to me the extra attachments were just kind of random machines instead of being their own character in Rush. And the boss fight doc robot seemed more like fun throwbacks than padding. The different boss weapons we're also kind of nice and I thought added better balance instead of just metal blade everything. So to me hearing that the game was rushed and unfinished just seems weird that it came out personally still better than its predecessor

      Mega Man 3 is to me, as a long time fan, my favorite in the series. It may have been rushed, but even so, it's the only game in the series to recognize it's predecessor directly which was groundbreaking. Though some say padding, as a kid enveloped in the series, I was amazed at having all the robot masters return in the sequel! It was the first game I ever felt recognized it's fanbase and attempted to make a game worthy of a true franchise prospect on caliber with the likes of Nintendo's own Mario Bros.

    Even though it's been nearly 4 years since Mega Man 11, I don't really think Capcom has necessarily been neglectful towards the franchise in recent memory, thanks to the recent collections we've been getting. Sure they've been busy with Monster Hunter and especially Resident Evil, but I think it's a safe assumption that they know how much Mega Man's popularity is slowly regrowing. Here's hoping we see a Mega Man 12 and Mega Man X9 in the future!

      @@Gatorade69 Personally, I think that's the only way for the franchise to survive. Imagine telling the future gamers of today, the children, that to get into this series you have to know the lore from 1987. Nah. Mario, Zelda, and Kirby have survived this long because their games all stand alone. To really get Mega Man going again, I think Capcom needs to scrap everything, and start almost completely over.

    • @Gatorade69
      @Gatorade69 Рік тому +7

      @@personmcdudeguy I mean they kind of did that with X and Battle network. The problem is besides legends most of the 3d MegaMan games aren't remembered quite as fondly as the 2d/2.5d titles. There's always going to be a section of fans who want the same thing and whine when they don't get it. Game tries to do something new and it's "Game isn't like the older titles !" and when it does the same thing you have people saying "This series is getting tired and not doing anything new." Lol. @@jayt2917 I wholeheartedly disagree. In fact I'd argue that 3 is one of the worst ones, not just on the NES but of the whole series
      The weapons are among the worst in the series with the Magnet Missile, Search Snake, and Shadow Blade being the only good ones while the Hard Knuckle, Spark Shock, and Gemini Laser are borderline garbage and the Top Spin is just straight up trash, being arguably the worst weapon in the entire franchise. The Doc Robot execution was abysmal. The final castle stages are among the most boring in the series because they're so easy. And lastly, the game is just buggier than any other game because of Capcom higher ups wanting the devs to push the game out as quickly as possible, and it shows. From small stuff like little graphical hiccups to actual in game problems like just falling through the moving platforms at the end of Snake Man's stage.
      MM3 is far from unplayable, don't get me wrong. However it's easily the one I go back to the least. Yes, I'd even go back to the first game before MM3, because even though there is an easy case to be made that the first game is "objectively" worse than MM3, being in the mindset of "it *IS* the first game" helps me to excuse most of the jank.

    Mega Man 9 is still my favorite in the series. Even though it doesn't innovate, it has by far the best soundtrack, by *far* the best selection of weapons, and easily the best level and boss design.
    The boss weaknesses in 9 are made so that weapon weaknesses not only deal more damage, but also are more effective at *hitting* bosses because they're designed in a way to exploit their attack patterns. Galaxy Man is easier to hit with the short-ranged Concrete Shot due to his habit of standing still, the Black Hole Bomb removes Jewel Man's shield, the Hornet Chaser is one of the only weapons that can reliably hit Splash Woman while she's swimming above you, etc.

It wasn't until I saw EPG's RoR episode on MM&B that I decided to give it a shot and holy hell did I love it.

    8 objectively suffers from frustrating difficulty spikes and intrusive gimmicks, but it also has some of the best secondary uses of the boss weapons in any Mega Man game. Since the second half of the game is only unlocked after beating the first four robot masters, the second set of levels all have challenges or alternate paths that require you to use the four weapons you already have, like using the Thunder Clad as a grappling hook.

    Over the years of hearing about MM&B with the people who like or hate it, to me a lot of the people who like it played the SNES version either first or as their main version vs the people who hate it starting with the GBA version.
    Seeing as how the game requires you to kinda "get good" to enjoy it, having the screen crunch of the GBA version makes that much harder since you can't see what you need to avoid, creating even more difficulty spikes than normal

    Though it is not on the list Mega Man V of the Game Boy series was good as it both have features not included in other games (Mega Arm and Tango), it also is the only Game Boy game that does not use any of the bosses from the NES Titles. In fact the only recycled bosss are the special bosses from all the previous Game Boy games.
    Also I beat Mega Man & Baas by switching Power-Up Parts. In Bass's case I switch to Super Armor when I know I could get hit. since due to his inability to heal during battle, the trick is to use parts carefully to help Bass hold out easier, it is the only way to complete the Bass game. The Wii U release also helped make things easier, though I am one of the players to beat the GBA version.

    I'll be honest, my favorite Mega Man game is 11. I know a lot of people didn't like the Double Gear system, but I thought it was a really awesome edition that swapped up the formula quite well! The ability to slow time with the Speed Gear made for some pretty tense platforming, and the upgrade that made you move normally in Speed Gear makes it all the more fun.
    One of the other reasons I think it's so good is the boss weapons. I'm the kind of person who tries to use the boss weapons as much as possible, and if the boss weapons suck, I'm probably not gonna like it as much. But the boss weapons in 11 are incredible! ALL of them are useful, and the ability to use the Power Gear to amp them to crazy degrees is so much fucking fun. There are some more BS parts of the game, and I REALLY feel like they should have just removed the life system out of 11 (We really don't need lives anymore. It's an archaic system). But overall, I think it's a great game and I do hope that we at least get to keep the weapons being supercharged in future classic games.

    So much of this video was so bizarre for me to hear. I've been playing Megaman games all my life. It's my favorite video game series. And so many of the claims you make about the series, and various entries in it, clash so hard with my knowledge and experience with the series. Like, Megaman 6, 7, and 8 weren't unpopular because people were getting tired of the same old formula. 6 was a NES game in the SNES era, 8 was a Playstation game for a Nintendo series, and 7 wasn't unpopular at all. It was just outshined by the X games.
    I discovered Megaman & Bass same as you, as an emulator when I was a kid. I was surprised when you said it was unpopular, and downright shocked when you said it was because of the difficulty. The game never seemed any more difficult than other Megaman games to me. Saying that playing it with Megaman was hardmode was also weird, Megaman was the easier play for me. I like Bass as a character, but I disliked playing as him. He always felt so weak. The extra mobility, while nice, was never all that useful or necessary when you can just move properly without it.
    It's so weird to hear someone who loves the series as much as I do have such different opinions about much of it. Even different perceptions about popularity and reception than I do. But a Megaman fan is a Megaman fan, and we always need more of those. Different opinions and preferences and all. I appreciate the walk down memory lane, and hope we'll get a real new Megaman game again, someday.

    Wonderful video, Gilly! I'm of the mind that people who poo on Mega Man 4 either never played it or don't really remember it. I never realized how great and important it is until I replayed the Classic series a while back to prepare for Mega Man 11's release.
    Much like Mega Man 7 is the first game in which everything _looks_ like what its creators' intended, Mega Man 4 is the first game to _feel_ like what its creators' intended. As cool as the first three games are, each of them noticeably cut corners to get out the door. Mega Man 4, however, really feels like nothing was compromised, and this definitely shows in its excellent intro, cool levels, and well-tuned bosses.
    The only thing I can knock about Mega Man 4 is the title theme. I wish it was longer! It bangs so hard, but then it's over before you know it.

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 2 місяці тому

      Mega Man 7 is more like more than what the creators intended for better or for worse as the sprite was created before the art. Although if I look at the artwork of Mega Man 4-6 it looks closer to the sprite of Mega Man 8 than Mega Man 7, but at least Mega Man 7 looks like Mega Man on the cover of Mega Man 3.
      Anyways, as far as Mega Man 4 “hate” goes the problem with Mega Man 4 is not the game itself, but that MM5 and MM6 are just the same game as Mega Man 4 so in retrospect Mega Man 4-6 all blur together. Also many people don’t like the charge shot very much as it wasn’t well implemented until Mega Man X so there’s that.

    As a huge fan of the classic series, i honestly always find it a little disappointing to hear when people don't make use of the weapons and only save them for the bosses. Not that i'm judging or anything, because buster-only is a perfectly valid way to play, but in my opinion, assessing every situation and figuring out the best weapon to use is where the classic series is truly at its best. The right weapon lineup can take a game from good to fantastic.
    Fun fact, the "start with four robot masters, then move on to the next four" formula started with the Gameboy games!
    Also, Mega Man 8 having a Special Weapon button AND a regular Mega Buster button is Absolutely HUGE, it was a GREAT change and i'm really sad that it wasn't kept for future games :(
    Thank you for giving Mega Man & Bass a fair shake, it's my personal favorite classic game (tied with Powered Up) but it's the kind of game you REALLY have to warm up to in order to get the most out of it.
    Anyway. This video is a nice overview of the classic series, and i'm happy to hear there will be more Mega Man videos in the future.
