I think Yoshi’s a dinosaur, and the whole thing is just a play on words. As, you’ve said, the Japanese word for “dinosaur” is “kyoryu”. “Kyo” can mean “giant” (as seen in “kyojin”, “giant person”, like Goliath), “great”, or “fear”. Parenthetically, if you go with the “fear” definition, it’s actually a pretty close translation of the original Latin meaning of “dinosaur”, “terrible lizard”. Anyway, remember the letter that was mentioned in the previous video, the one that Yoshi (in the original Japanese) signed as “Super Dragon Yoshi”? If we’re going with the “giant”/“great” definition of “kyo”, “Super Dragon” (or rather, “supa doragon”, as it’s rendered in katakana) can be seen as a sort of Anglicization of the root words of “kyoryu”, and a play on the Super Mario Brothers themselves.
I don’t think a turtle shell really discounts Yoshi from being a dragon. Dragons are really just a mixture of various animals and turtle shells can sometimes be added to the mix. One notable example is the Tarasque from a myth in southern France which is depicted as having Turtle shell.
@@Mendoza-yi6qk Nope, it a regional myth in France. While it’s called a dragon it has Lion’s head, 6 bear limbs, a serpent tail, and the aforementioned turtle shell. It featured in a myth where the Saint Martha was able to subdue it with prayer and holy water. It supposedly the namesake of the French town Tarascon who gets its name from this myth.
Both, considering folklore and dinosaur fossils. Alternatively, he's an animal that, in Mario lore, evolutionarily predates dinosaurs, koopas, and dragons, thus he'd have traits of all three.
I think "Plessie" is more a reference to "Nessie", the Loch Ness monster, rather than a reference to the plesiosaur. Which would somewhat resemble a Nothosaur, according to legend anyway.
Just as an aside, if yoshi is a dinosaur I would propose that he might be some kind of ceratosaurian - maybe a noasaur if I had to get specific - based on not only the back plates (similar to ceratosaurus itself) but also having 4 fingers, which is very uncommon in theropods outside of early groups and ceratosaurians.
Here's the ultimate cop-out. Yoshi is actually an artificial lifeform with the DNA of dragons, dinosaurs and turtles mixed in. Probably chameleon given his tongue.
Well, seeing as Yoshi is a dinosaur/dragon-looking creature that has a unique ability to extend his tongue to eat just about anything and spit it back out (depending on what it is) AND he can pretty much only say his own name (besides grunting noises when he does that jump/fly thing) I’d say he’s a species of Pokémon that has yet been discovered.
Yoshi has Osteoderms. That's what the "shell" is on his back and explains the red plates running down his back. Just like Ankylosaurs with an adapted set of Osteoderms that form the club, Yoshi has surface formations that help protect his vulnerable back. Would develop similarly to a Pachycephalosaurus skull. Dragons were based on dinosaurs so it makes sense that they'd have similar traits
13:19 Fun fact: We actually got really close to having an evil Yoshi in the form of Boshi, a character from Super Mario RPG who is stated as being Yoshi’s rival.
this theory has been in the works even before this video came out, and i am so exited to finally share it with you. here is my proposal for you: some koopas got stranded on what will later be know as Yoshi's island. on that island, there wasn't enough meat (i assume that is what koopas eat, they seem very hostile) to go around, so some of the koopas began to stave. in desperation, they tried the fruit that is abundant around the island. it wasn't what their bodies where made for, so they couldn't break down the fruit, and so they had to eat way more fruit to stay alive. but then, a mutation occurred. a koopa whose body could break down plants, a koopa who was an omnivore, meaning they had to eat less to stay alive, meaning they got into less food shenanigans, meaning, they lived longer. and then its kids lived longer, and then their kids lived longer, and eventually that koopa, no, ancient Yoshi, was a common ancestor. other thing evolved too. they no longer needed their hard beaks, so it evolved into a bulbous nose also, their is fruit in tall trees. these trees are to high up to reach. so, some evolved to have longer and sturdier tongues, to reach and pluck the fruit out of the trees. overs evolved to "flutter" up and grab them. and a few grew bigger to just grab it (these would be the ancestors of Dorrie and plessie). however all of them had begun leaning to swim to catch fish. dorrie acquired a taste for fish, and so became all aquatic. plessie remained on land and in the water, while the yoshis remained on their island, eating fruit until a fateful baby falls into their home. but hey, that's just a theory, a fan theory, thanks for reading.
literally so many animals with beaks eat vegetation. Most turtles and tortoises use their beaks to eat plants, and many birds as well use their beaks to eat seeds and nuts.
I had a small theory that Yoshi doesn't die when dropped into a pit but gets transported back into a egg thanks to a curse place on him by Bowser. Immortality is a side effect to the Egg Curse imprisoning him.
Main issue, Yoshi is part of a species called Yoshi, or also known as T-Yoshisaurus Koopamunchus. Its likely the initial one did, in fact, die in that pit. The one we see accompanying him in his Mario Kart/Party/Galaxy/etc games from these past two decades however, maybe excluding some titles, is likely the same one however.

Hi Mat, great theory! That being said, there still is a ton of dragon symbolism with Yoshi as you expertly laid out here! Just a fun little detail about the kanji for dinosaur.
This is probably my favorite sponsor of Game Theory so far! I've never seen a PSA as a sponsorship before, but I hope it continues because that stuff matters sm. If I didn't buckle my seatbelt before my accident, my whiplash would've turned into a fatal neck snap. Buckle up folks!

U know bahamut originates from the name of giant fish in Arabian myth that helps hold up the world right. FF didn’t make bahamut and if it did that’d be like the equivalent of saying Greek mythology was made by the Percy Jackson series
Wrong. Yoshi is a Pokémon. He says his own name, he has magic powers, he is full sized when hatched from eggs, very loyal even after abuse from Mario, has shoes. SHOES. No dragon hatches from an egg with shoes… buuuut some Pokémon hatch with clothes (Though typically the clothes are a part of them).
@@ruthdeckman9781 Not all dragon types are dragons. Take the Tyrantrum line, for example. It’s actually a dinosaur. Alolan Exegutor is a dragon for some stupid reason. Altaria shouldn’t be, it’s a cloud bird thing. Guzzlord isn’t a dragon at all, yet is still a dragon type. The Dragon typing is just the arcane magic type… unless it actually is a dragon.
You know, *ALL* of these theories may be correct. Yoshis reproduce and grow up ridiculously fast (you can't go ten feet without stumbling into a Yoshi egg sometimes) to the point that they're essentially disposable with no regard for their own existence. Canonically, they come in several varieties with different innate abilities. So they probably evolve very quickly. And if they hybridize well, that would mean that they can be Dragon, Dinosaur, and Koopa (and much more), and change in fundamental ways very fast depending on conditions.
I believe sometimes hybrids can still have offspring. It is just very rare. An example is Grolar/Pizzly bears. Overall hybrids cannot produce fertile offspring but sometimes you have some that can.
Sometimes I wish these types of characters could have kept their original Japanese names - they just sound so nice :D Also, love the message of making sure you use a seatbelt! It is super important. There would ne whole sessions we'd spend without getting a single star because we were making up our own little storylines in the overworld. One of them was that Yoshi was the baby of the big grumpy dad Bowser and the nice mama Loch Ness Monster you ride on. He was grounded by Bowser, that's why he was hard to get to. I miss being a kid.
playing along here, i think the shell could be a genetic trait that somehow expressed itself when the hybridization occured and koopas, dinosaurs and dragons all come from the same stock. maybe the ancestral koopa came first and the other two branches shed the shell for whatever reason. no i'm not reading too much into yoshi. no i'm NOT

I don’t think a turtle shell really discounts Yoshi from being a dragon. Dragons are really just a mixture of various animals and turtle shells can sometimes be added to the mix. One notable example is the Tarasque from a myth in southern France which is depicted as having Turtle shell.
Never heard about this creature. Thank you for sharing!
there's also the dragon turtle
Wait I thought the Tarasque is just a creature from DnD not from a myth
@@Mendoza-yi6qk most of the fantasy genre is inspired by mythology

Wait but since Yoshi was originally meant to "Eat Bowser's minions", if Yoshi is a Koopa, doesn't that mean he's a cannibal?
👀
O0O
Ooh it's more interesting now
Considering the diversity of Koopas, they're likely not one species
Pretty much all characters that can eat others in the Nintendo games were cannibals at some point or another, like Kirby eating Meta Knight
Which would somewhat resemble a Nothosaur, according to legend anyway.
it's obvious
nessie is widely believed to be a plesiosaur, so a reference to nessie is a reference to plesiosaurs essentially
Probably both
Theory:
Yoshi's father is a dragon and dinossaur hybrid while his mom is a turtle.
Most hybrids are infertile
Must be a pretty complicated family get together.
okay how would that massive Dino-dragon... fit.... in his mother then
His dad is a dragon and his mum is a Koopa troopa
@@ChangeNameEdits in real life, yes. But this is a video game, and this video has proved that they don't usually follow logic.
The: "Yoshi is evil don't forget" quote makes more sense now
Here's the ultimate cop-out. Yoshi is actually an artificial lifeform with the DNA of dragons, dinosaurs and turtles mixed in. Probably chameleon given his tongue.

Jurassic World 3 sounds lit
That leaves the question of who made it and why

Well, seeing as Yoshi is a dinosaur/dragon-looking creature that has a unique ability to extend his tongue to eat just about anything and spit it back out (depending on what it is) AND he can pretty much only say his own name (besides grunting noises when he does that jump/fly thing) I’d say he’s a species of Pokémon that has yet been discovered.
But on yoshi’s island for game boy yoshi also says Nintendo
if we’re going by the Mario movie and pretty sure he’s just a turtle or what they call a turtle at least

Yoshi has Osteoderms.

13:19 Fun fact: We actually got really close to having an evil Yoshi in the form of Boshi, a character from Super Mario RPG who is stated as being Yoshi’s rival.
Who shares even more similarities with Bahamut
there is too much bots here
this theory has been in the works even before this video came out, and i am so exited to finally share it with you.
here is my proposal for you: some koopas got stranded on what will later be know as Yoshi's island. on that island, there wasn't enough meat (i assume that is what koopas eat, they seem very hostile) to go around, so some of the koopas began to stave. in desperation, they tried the fruit that is abundant around the island. it wasn't what their bodies where made for, so they couldn't break down the fruit, and so they had to eat way more fruit to stay alive. but then, a mutation occurred. a koopa whose body could break down plants, a koopa who was an omnivore, meaning they had to eat less to stay alive, meaning they got into less food shenanigans, meaning, they lived longer. and then its kids lived longer, and then their kids lived longer, and eventually that koopa, no, ancient Yoshi, was a common ancestor. other thing evolved too. they no longer needed their hard beaks, so it evolved into a bulbous nose also, their is fruit in tall trees. these trees are to high up to reach. so, some evolved to have longer and sturdier tongues, to reach and pluck the fruit out of the trees. overs evolved to "flutter" up and grab them. and a few grew bigger to just grab it (these would be the ancestors of Dorrie and plessie). however all of them had begun leaning to swim to catch fish. dorrie acquired a taste for fish, and so became all aquatic. plessie remained on land and in the water, while the yoshis remained on their island, eating fruit until a fateful baby falls into their home.
but hey, that's just a theory, a fan theory, thanks for reading.
That’s an amazing theory!
This was a great theory! I hope MatPat sees this and contemplates it.
Having a beak is not a sign of a carnivorous diet. Some turtles in real life have beaks and some are completely herbivorous.
literally so many animals with beaks eat vegetation. Most turtles and tortoises use their beaks to eat plants, and many birds as well use their beaks to eat seeds and nuts.
This feels like a concept that would've been covered in 2013

I had a small theory that Yoshi doesn't die when dropped into a pit but gets transported back into a egg thanks to a curse place on him by Bowser. Immortality is a side effect to the Egg Curse imprisoning him.
Main issue, Yoshi is part of a species called Yoshi, or also known as T-Yoshisaurus Koopamunchus. Its likely the initial one did, in fact, die in that pit. The one we see accompanying him in his Mario Kart/Party/Galaxy/etc games from these past two decades however, maybe excluding some titles, is likely the same one however.

I'm by no means a Japanese expert, but I remember learning that the Japanese word for dinosaur is 恐竜 which more literally translates to "fear/dread" "dragon" which would explain why some guides may have translated Yoshi's species between both a dinosaur and a dragon.
No they aren't. Yoshi is old enough to be bowsers father
evolve quickly like Pokémon
I believe sometimes hybrids can still have offspring. It is just very rare. An example is Grolar/Pizzly bears.
Overall hybrids cannot produce fertile offspring but sometimes you have some that can.
