    She strikes me as someone who just doesn't work obsessively hard to hone her craft. When you're competing against those who are absolutely obsessed, they're going to look better and more polished and the quality of their presentation is just going to be higher more often.

      Artistry Artistry this is exactly what I think too and it drives me insane. I feel like she never practices other than rehearsals and sound check and maybe lessons. It’s so frustrating as someone who practices any time I can.
      Also it’s beyond obvious she only ever practices with tracks with singing in the background. I don’t think she ever hears herself just a capella. Her breath control is non existent. She makes the same mistakes I work on getting rid of and she’s been a professional singer for over 10 years.

    • @AdaVox
      @AdaVox 5 років тому +121

      Artistry Artistry I think the big thing is that she probably doesn’t consider herself a “singer”. She’s primarily an actress. Music is just kind of her “hobby”.

    I'm seeing a massive difference between live concerts that are the "worst" and the more live studio performances for the "best". To me part of it is the mixing of the instruments with her vocals and seems more relaxed when not perforoming at a concert, as well as some songs are sung differently (like you said with the last one, the key was different) and also different backing intruments. I'm not in the know with the right words for this as I'm not experienced at all - but its just my observation.

    • @perwestermark8920
      @perwestermark8920 5 років тому +23

      Might be a question of stamina. For the concerts she has to sing for a long time and also dance.

    • @buddybleeyes
      @buddybleeyes 5 років тому +8

      You could be quite right there, especially with dancing on stage. From what I've gathered, tours are also very exhausting so it would make a lot of sense :)

    • @buddybleeyes
      @buddybleeyes 5 років тому +8

      @@Nissl61 Now you mention it, it is quite obvious about splitting attention. It's not about the singing anymore, it's about the entire performance with alot of complicated dancing sometimes- it's no wonder why someone would struggle with that :) and that's very true, anxiety on a big stage compared to the more relaxed smaller studio performances is a massive gap :)

    Theres a video of Selena Gomez as a teenager/in her early 20s someone on youtube during a voice lesson and she is receiving TERRIBLE advice from a vocal coach. I believe Tristan Paredes reacted to it. She has been taught so poorly and uses techniques that are not in anyways sustainable. Selena can certainly sing, she just hasnt received the correct tutoring. I think if she was to work with someone kind and constructive and knowledgeable like Sam it would do her the world of good.

    This is just my opinion but it sounds to me that she lacks the training that would be needed to hit certain note's and phrase's. I think she would benefit from a vocal coach/teacher, if she has one she needs to get a new one! These aren't terrible performances, (I've heard worse) they just lack control & power. If she put the work in she could be a good singer. I'm not Selena bashing because she does have a few song I like, I guess I just want to see her try a little bit. She's blessed with status and money, put some work in it little love, don't your listeners deserve that much? Even if she is having a Lupus flare up (if she's not in to much pain) she could still be learning from the abundant amount of coach's/teacher's on UA-cam. It seems like she has lost her desire to sing. 🤔

    • @DMThisIsPam
      @DMThisIsPam 5 років тому +42

      I agree wholeheartedly. She could be a much better singer with the right guidance, but whoever's doing it now is not doing a very good job. You'd think with her financial position and her connections she'd have access to the very best, so why hasn't she?

    it's so nice to see someone reacting and analyzing Selena Gomez's singing with an unbiased opinion. a lot of other reactions have been ruined for me because they would rather focus on the bad singing than to give constructive criticism. personally, i don't think she's a bad singer, but i think a lot of the songs she sings don't suit her voice. i think she's suited for slower acoustic songs rather than the mainstream pop songs she usually puts out. i would rather listen to songs that showcased her vocals and hear her sing in a comfortable register than songs where i can feel the tension in her voice. there's a video of Selena in a singing lesson with her vocal coach, and i've seen another voice teacher react to it and disagree with many of what he was teaching and correcting her. i would love to hear your opinion on it as well!

      I think she’s an alto singing above her bridge. When she pulls head voice it goes falsetto 99% of the time (live). But that’s not to say she’s not a good singer. I think she’s got a wonderful voice. The last clip where the arrangement was altered everything was lower and it sounded fantastic. I just hope she focuses on getting well right now.

      Izzy Prodution aside, she’s not dancing around so she’s not having her breathing issue be exaggerated. And she does seem like she is singing better, so maybe her confidence up because she knows it’s going to be produced and sound good anyway. Already the biggest two things holding her back are taken care of in one fell swoop.

    I mostly got the feeling that a lot of the "worst" ones were in big live concerts, where it's much harder to hear yourself, compared to the "best" that was mostly small studio or acoustic settings in a small room without a huge cheering audience.
    Also, it sounded like alot of the "worst" had a massively filtered audio to bring out the voice. I understand why they did it, but it makes the entire sound a bit weird.

    I'm not exactly a fan of Selena, tbh, I don't think she's particularly outstanding... but what I haven't seen mentioned is that this young woman is dealing with severe health issues - she has a severe (and often fatal) autoimmune condition called SLE (Lupus for short) and that has already resulted in her needing a kidney transplant, she's currently fighting with leukopenia (low white blood cell count) which again, can be incredibly serious. And considering the treatments for SLE and the drugs she must be on to prevent rejection of her transplanted kidney, there's a good chance that at least some of her inconsistency and changes in her singing style are a result of the health issues she's fighting. Sadly, when you're feeling like utter crud all the time, you sometimes lose a little of that polish compared to other, more healthy, contemporaries.

    I was going to request this exact video! Loved hearing your thoughts on this. I feel like Selena Gomez seems to get in her head a lot and doesn’t seem very confident singing live (maybe because people are pretty harsh on her). It’s very interesting that you say the worst ones seem like an energy thing!
    I really like her and her voice so I feel bad that sometimes it seems like her confidence is pretty low. I know when I get nervous singing live, my breath support can get wonky. I would love if you reacted to the video of her with her voice teacher! I have some thoughts on him... lol... but I’d love to hear yours.

    I agree with those saying she needs a new vocal coach, for sure. If I recall correctly, she has lupus and has gone through a kidney transplant, and I have to wonder about the timing of “bad” performances and how all of that has affected her. ❤️

    I’ve known her for a long time (maybe more than 10 years?) and her advantage in this music industry is mainly a beautiful unique vocal tone, and a likeable girl-next-door personality.
    But that being that, her vocal ability is really not very good. I would say slightly below average. It tends to be so unstable, pitchy and overall problematic to the point of impacting on her ability to convey emotion/message of the song she’s singing.
    I went to her concert once and...let’s just say she really needed her band. And poor girl, in some places even the band couldn’t save her from her noticeable unstableness. It was a struggle for me as an audience because I could clearly hear the struggle in her voice and her body.
    And I know it definitely has something major to do with her health condition. But in the end, she is still a singer and it is only respectful to judge her singing ability in a professional way.
    The most important thing for her to do now is definitely managing her illness, and finding ways to balance her health with her professional career. Because as she gets older, I’m afraid that her health would suffer even more, which would also impact on her singing even more severely.

      eon star She has lupus and, from what I know (not very much) is a serious, sometimes life-threatening illness which affects the organ systems in a person’s body. Selena even got kidney failing and went through a kidney transplant surgery. Very unfortunate.

      yeah, it’s actually true that lupus can affect your singing. Lupus causes inflammation that affects the synovial lining, in which return, puts pressure on the vocal cords. it’s probably the swelling that causes voice issues with lupus. my mom (who’s a doctor) even told me.

      I think she's not great at singing as far as skill and in her genre I think it’s so easy to be lazy but in some notes her voice takes my breath away. Maybe when she's feeling better she can take some lessons with Sam. I like her and I’d like to see her stick around in her industry.

      She just isn't a shouty belter with 500 octaves who wants to show off like many others. Nothing wrong with having a light voice. Her problem is that she is off key a lot. She needs to work on her technique.

    just an unpopular opinion "just because she can't sing high notes, doesn't mean that she's not a great singer" people nowadays only appreciate and recognize singers when they can belt and sing really high. Singing is an art not a wrestling competition.

      She's still can't support a basic note , just look at Lana and Billie they have the same singing style as her but Selena is not even close to them both (Lana and Billie ) are great singers they have good vocals they sound good unlike Selena , she is not a good singer , she's under average just be realist I'm not a hater I love Selena as a person I think she's a precious human but when it comes to vocals and singing it's not her thing she has good studio songs but live just no

    I kinda hate this trend of dragging artists because everything is filmed these days. Every artist in every single arena has off days. I love Amy Lee, but I saw her and she was terrible because.... She. Is. Human. Touring is hard, performing is hard. Give these stars a break. I still own every single work that Amy Lee has put out, even her torturing my fave Muppets song of all time.... It's called being a fan! ♥ ♥ Thanks Sam for another great honest video! I still would love to see you and Melissa Cross together ♥!
