Nice one, thanks. I've had this problem a little and thought it was due to the lack of light, I'm not lacking in reasons to put the kettle on but this one gose up to the top ten. Cheers.
Nice David, be sure to check back and let us know how you get on :-) chamomile tea can be used also to prevent damping off and also great to treat fungus issues like mildew.
this is a great tip alex thank you for that i was having this problem and the main reason i waited to start seeds. im feeling way more confident after seeing this video cheers mate
For those struggling with the Patric Moore reference... 🤣he's a Monsanto lobbyist that said in an interview that glyphosate in Roundup a herbicide was safe to drink and isn't causing cancer... when the interviewer offered him a quart to drink, he was not happy let's just say . here's the link ua-cam.com/video/7jWyrbP0TJQ/v-deo.html
Hi Alex! Thank you so much for this vid, as I was dealing with damping off issues. Every day I would find several of my seedling starts had flopped over. I followed your suggestion and brewed some horsetail tea, and then folliar sprayed and bottom watered with it also. Next day, not one more loss…is a week now and still all good😊 Awesome! My question now is regarding the cucumber beatle! Do you have any thoughts on that garden problem? I had no issue for years, but last year lost many direct sown cucumber seedlings and established ones also. Was a new pest in my garden suddenly. So disheartening and frustrating to watch plants wilting from this pest! I picked them off as best I could early mornings. I understand from research that they live on in the soil over winter….just thinking that the horsetail tea may help with this also? Any thoughts on this? Perhaps drenching the outdoor soil now, in early spring, may kill off the eggs of the cucumber beatle?
Hi Alex! For fungus gnats: Buy a package of "Mosquito dunks" or “Mosquito bits” at the garden center or order it online. It is BT. Put one quarter of one in your watering can (or a small chunk in the water trays if it's a carnivorous plant). This will kill the larvae in the soil and stop future generations. It is all natural and safe. But give it some time to work and keep using it even after your problem is gone. Use sticky traps and manually kill the adults. Continue using even after they are all gone.
Yes BT is a great option. I want to buy some to put a little in my nepenthes pitchers as they've become home and a breading ground for mosquitos lol. There's blooming loads coming out of those larges jugs. Ill have to look online as they don't seem to sell it anymore in the local garden centres.
you can boil for several minutes and leave to cool, in the same proportions, 1 teaspoon to a cup of water then dilute by adding 3 more cups. I find it easier to just brew it like a cup of tea for 5min.
Ridomil Gold is a game-changer for damping off. Regalia is Japanese Knott weed and works excellently! There is another version cheaper version of Regalia, Arbor bioprotectant
For measurement sake what does "1 part horsetail and 4 parts water" come out to? I don't want to over or under do it because I have a white oak acorn planted and I want to get it right when it sprouts.
hey Hunter, parts can be applied to any measurement. For example if you have a glass full of horse tail tea then add 4 glasses of water to it to dilute and its ready. Or, 250Ml Horsetail tea to 1 litre of water. Don't be worried, it don't need to be exact.
thanks Alex , very upsetting to see the seedlings come through the seed raising mixture to see them flopping over 😢 waiting for the horsetail to come . Do I have to throw away the soil for the ones that have perished or can I replant the seeds once soil is sprayed ???
It is Suzan, I had many a times lost whole trays of lovely seedlings coming on. Since using the horsetail tea and not keeping them too damp, a little air flow, not one has perished. I'm pretty frugal and hate wastage, so I would reuse the soil, or use it for mature plants and wash the trays. But it's so hard to completely get rid of the pathogen. I recon with horsetail it will do the job. Please keep me up to date 😊
HI Alex , my horsetail turned up today , will mix some up and try it on the seedlings ,do I water ever day with this mixture ? How long for will it kill the nats ? Thanks .
hello Sue, no it will not kill fungus gnats. For that you want bacillus thuringiensis or nematodes (steinernema feltiae) ua-cam.com/video/s7Stw0aPykw/v-deo.html Horsetail is great as a anti fungicide or anti microbial, so is a good dampening off prevention. I would just water weekly with that, it should be enough :-)
🤣 maybe too obscure, he's a Monsanto lobbyist that said in an interview that glyphosate in Roundup a herbicide was safe to drink and isn't causing cancer... when the interviewer offered to give him a quart to drink... it didn't go down well...lol ua-cam.com/video/7jWyrbP0TJQ/v-deo.html

Adding this to a compost tea would be really good. Thank you.
Nice Idea! Your welcome :-)
I just lost a bunch of seedlings last week. Definitely gonna try this.

I already have horsetail for myself for tea. Nice to know i can use it for my plants as well!
Im about to try starting a quartered pineapple top.

Wow definetly I want to get it but I can buy it or I got to harvest
Horse tail can be found sold as a tea in some supermarkets and most herbal shops.
Thanks so much for introducing me to horsetail tea.
You're welcome, glad you enjoy the content @cookied4998 😀 Happy growing!! 🌱

Just dont grow horsetail or mares tail as it's highly invasive and extremely difficult to get rid of 😉😁🌱☀️
Yes I have read this 😬
chamomile
That is very good too!
I had to google Patrick Moore and still don't get the reference :(
