I have a 2021 Audi S5 Cab and the ipad like screen is the same as this RS5's. I have to say I was not enamored with the tacked on screen looks, but it has me liking it much more than the screen in my Porsche. In the Porsche I have to look down (while driving) to adjust anything on the screen and my eyes leave the road. Adjusting the screen in the Audi, it's just a sideways glance and I do not have to remove my eye from the road. So in my case practicality outweighs the appearance. Love the videos.
I agree with you but I wonder why Audi ditched the retractable screen that came out of the dash. It was really cool to be honest and it was classic Audi. It's a shame they got rid of it.
@@dylanw890 I totally agree, also the touchscreen can sometimes be difficult to use on bumpy roads, makes me choose the wrong icon if I hit a bump. My son owns a 2018 A6 SLine and his car has the retractable screen and I really, really like it better than the "tack on" screen in my RS5. I'd be happier if they'd put the little touchpad or touchwheel on the center console for use while driving instead of the touchscreen only.
I always feel like the RS5 is the underdog in its class and is often looked over bc the C63 and M4 are better drivers cars. A lot of the owners of these cars aren’t pulling these cars out on a Sunday morning to go drive down their favourite road only once a week, they’re daily driving them and that’s where the RS5 shines. It trades some driving dynamics and driver engagement for a more comfortable drive. The RS5 mostly fixes the huge lag issues in the B9 platform, both the A5 and S5 use single turbo engines and paired with the Audi programmed ZF 8 spd the lag on those engines was horrible (I owned 2 with the same platform). At least the twin turbo aids the engine side of things but the transmission still needs work. Next gen RS5 will most likely be electrified to some degree so that should help, I see it becoming a 4 cylinder which is going to be a sad day. Great review!

After the late-night prep & early-morning starts to events, I'm pretty comfortable putting the Audi into sleep mode & just cruising home.
Going to buy an Audi RS 5 in the very near future. Love the car. Also, noticed the Yaks in the hanger. I drove F-4 Phantoms and FA-18 Hornets for the USMC. Good review of the Audi. Keep up the good work and watch your six. Thanks.
Well Brother, it's been a full year, just checking SITREP on current phase line & ETA? Picked up my RS5 & if you ever wind up in TX, we could head out to the old airfields for ol' time's sake. Semper Fi, my good man. Keep it up...🤙
I love the grey rs5. I don't know what he's talking about. I do agree with him regarding the screen sticking out as opposed to blending in with the rest of the interior. looks like it was a last minute addition to the interior.
They had to bring it out to make it easier to reach since it's touch. The old screen looked better, it had a metal trim around it that matched other trim on the dash, and it was small enough that when you turned it off you could easily just ignore it and concentrate on the virtual cockpit.

Couldn’t disagree more. That Daytona grey and black optics package is stunning. I have this exact color combo on my S5 and this is by far the best daily I’ve ever had. The trunk space is enormous and you can sit 4. Arguably the most practical sports car out there and you don’t see them often. Interior seems outdated? As opposed to what? Manufacturers going cheap and replacing the dash with a giant ugly iPad? That Audi MMI is a masterpiece. I can’t wait to get an RS5, the S5 is already fast but this seems amazing and the way the power is translated to the road is phenomenal. Oh YEAH! You are SO RIGHT there lol. I traded my S5 in on an RS5 & can't imagine a road ever built where the RS5's "present"/full-on stiff suspension can seem smooth. Idk maybe Ingolstadt was thinking ahead to how the roads on Mars would be, but it's not like that anywhere I've been. Then again, I've never driven a freshly-paved, diamond-cut Indy Motor Speedway lol. I will say this: my Guilia QV was a far better-handling car and it was pretty rough too... but not this bad, which makes me wonder about the engineering tradeoff of "stiffer is better" without ado to general ride characteristics. I set both RS modes into lower levels of suspension because it's just flat too much, even on a generally-good road. Also, my RS5 color combo completely matches what OP hates lmao. ;-)
Though we don't have the mountain views like out west, Ohio does have triple-digit roads in the southeast near WV state line. There is only so much elevation changes they can physically do with the roads and I guarantee you'll be throughly impressed with blind, off camber turns along with some switch backs too!
I love your channel! My favorite automotive reviewer in the USA!!! I have the 2019 RS5 Sportback in Glacier White Pearl Metallic exterior with the full Carbon and blackout exterior trim package. I added the AWE TUNING, AIRGATE CARBON FIBER INTAKE...instant improvement in throttle response from low revs to upper mid. I improved the looks further with 20" Abt GR wheels in black with the machined lip. Shazam!!!!
I have the 2019 white SB too! I just trimmed the rear diffuser in red 3M tape and it looks so good. You only did the intake for a performance upgrade and noticed a difference? I got the AWE Touring exhaust on mine
@@tomacandelara Yes! Initial throttle response is greatly improved over the stock setup. Virtually gone is the perception of turbo lag. However, a new personality trait emerges. Because of the effortless induction of air through the throttle body, the engine computer now needs APR SOFTWARE to recalibrate the conversation between the ECU and the TCU. I find that driving in fully automatic mode, especially part-throttle while rolling can really confuse the transmission. Shifting with the paddles=non-issue. Also, the AWE TUNING AIRGATE CARBON FIBER INTAKE has a removable lid that, if removed helps produce some of the sexiest intake/turbo music I've ever heard.
@@tomacandelara Absolutely. Also, I'm going to purchase APR High-Flow Catalysts so that the engine can exhale as easily as she inhales. After the cats are replaced, Stage 2 APR Software is required. That sweet 2.9TT will produce over 550 HP. The next logical step for improvement is the suspension.
@@user-wz4ei2iu6w love it. I’m thinking about getting the high flow cats and my Audi guy said to start with the intercooler, that it’s the most restrictive part of this car
Audi nailed this car except for that stuck on ipad tablet. This would be a great DD that’s actually fun to drive. Audi just needs to fix that flat spot low in the torque curve. Spot on review as always MM!
Strange question but now that you’ve driven both: which is more fun? This or the base taycan cross turismo? By the time I option both, take into account tax incentives and gas savings the taycan appears to have a very similar cost of ownership
This is a great review of the RS5 couldn't agree more with what was said. I myself love this car but cant help but wonder what it would be like with a V8 maybe even the sweet V8 in the RS6/7!
Weeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllll.... even more front-end heavy, I assume lol. I haven't driven a V8 Audi in over a decade & haven't even driven a V8 since... 2019? Pre-covid I think but idk if one of the German brands snuck a V8 in me on a test drive 🤷♂. But even that lack of recall alone tells you how my pages have turned lol.
So I found it & tried to tag you, but wasn't happening. He's a wagon guy (I don't disagree), so the RS6 Avant is his car. The model is confirmed, though he didn't clarify the trim / configuration.
So regarding the options game I completely agree that it would be better in a color. Thing is that if you opt for Ascari blue that is only contained in a package which, answering your question as to if you can opt for ceramics, is the ONLY way you can get ceramics fitted. Funny Audi is funny.
Great Review as always. Love this car color and all... Comparing it to the M3 Competition. I have owned more Audi's than BMW's but very hard to pick between the 2. Which do you prefer.
I agree with many of the comments here. Audi's interior design language is a bit off the rails IMO. Going to the larger screen in this refresh was a bad decision and made the screen far more of an eyesore. It was Ok pre-refresh, but now it's just too big and it looks terrible. The use of gloss black was also a step backward. The A6 and higher are even worse. Don't even get me started on the lack of color choices. The transmission is also an issue because Audi has never been able to tune the ZF8 as well as BMW. At the end of the day, this car leaves me wanting. At the end of the day, it's a high-end GT car with performance that approaches that of sports cars. This car isn't sharp enough to be a sports car and it weighs too much. Why Audi refuses to embrace what its S and RS cars are is beyond me. If they did, maybe they would become better products.
That's why I love the pre-refresh 2019 with the smaller more integrated screen with the satisfying rotary knob, and no piano-black whatsoever! Also the exterior styling was fine before they tarted it up with unnecessary extra bling. The 2019 RS5 Sportback was already perfect. Really the only drawback are the dated graphics in the MMI, because simpler more monochromatic graphics have become trendier in newer UIs. But all graphics are going to get outdated sooner or later no matter how cool they look when the car is new.
I agree with most of what you said about the gloss black and the screens on the refreshed models. In terms of driving dynamics a lot of people don’t understand the purpose of RS/S models they’re not trying to be the sharpest, most dynamic cars in the segment they’re trying to be the best at balancing comfort of with dynamic driving. If you want something dynamic get an E63 or M5 both of those are more engaging to drive when driven hard but when they’re driven normally they can’t match the comfort of the RS6. I could have a biased opinion being that I’ve owned many audis in the past, but these sub 150k cars are being daily driven for the most part so people aren’t driving them hard all the time. Even then Audi’s aren’t horrible when driven hard either. The ZF8 speeds though definitely needs some work, audis suffer from so much lag it’s one of the worst things about the brand.
@@Pabla98 You echoed my point exactly. It's as if Audi doesn't even understand that given the lack of features one expects in this price category. MB has the same problem with the E53. A GT car they are trying to market as a high performance sports car which it isn't.
@@darrell9616 well not exactly, I see that Audi is trying fill a niche that BMW and Mercedes don’t fill. Both those cars fighting to be the most dynamic, visceral and engaging cars, while Audi is choosing to give up some of that in turn for some comfort. RS for the most part does mean a sportier car it also means a more prestigious car, aka one step above in terms of luxury above the S models. It gives buyers the option who don’t want a super sporty, uncomfortable car something that’s still very fun to drive but a little more attainable to drive daily.
@@Pabla98 You are misunderstanding me. I know what the S and RS cars are and what they are not. What I'm saying is that Audi doesn't know what they want those cars to be. There is no excuse for the lack of color choices and restricted heated wheel options in these cars when they are obviously more comfort oriented: GT not sports. S and RS are GT cars. Nothing wrong with that. Audi seems to be ashamed to admit it.
I really hope this is one those vehicles that can last. It’s an Audi so I won’t hold my breath but it would be lovely if it could since I would like one
Modern day Audis are very reliable, obviously not Toyota level reliable but still good. I’ve owned 5 since 2013 and they’ve all been rock solid. A lot of people mistake expensive fixes with poor reliability, these cars are expensive to fix when they break but they don’t break as often as you’d think.
@@Pabla98 That's been my experience as well Arman, especially with the newer Audis. I've owned a 2013 Q7, 2014 A4, 2015 S5, 2018 A6 (current), and 2021 RS5 (current). Only problem I had on any of these vehicles was the thermostat on the Q7 went out at around 90k miles. Was around $1200 to fix but the Q7 was CPO, so it ended up being about $85 out of pocket. I'd for sure by a certified pre-owned (CPO) Audi if you get a used one as the repairs are expensive, just like any other German car.
We have a RS4 B9 (2019, my wife's car), same engine. Well, the QUATTRO traction is unrivaled, but the brake pedal is strange, the steel brake discs overheat quickly, the gearbox is not very fast (especially the downshifts) and the steering a bit rough. Nothing to do with the C63 (that I own too): the AMGs have top brakes, steering and gearbox. I prefer to drive an AMG.
Couldn't believe this was the lightest RS car you've driven until I searched your channel. Either go drive the TT-RS before it's gone, or get into the new RS3 as soon as they allow you. Don't you know the best Audis are hopped up VWs?
Lol I mean I liked your comment, but still kind "meh" here haha. I'm not an Audifista, yet I've somehow now owned 3 (S4, S5 SB, RS5 SB). But your comment reminded me of the Germ on D-Day "if you see green planes in the sky, they're American, if you see silver planes in the sky, they're Brit, and if you see NO planes in the sky, they're German." 🤣 I know it's not car-related, so I ask for your pardon lol.
So much of that horrid ‘soft-touch’ material everywhere. Thought about moving to the RS5 after my C63S (which was after my S5)…but just couldn’t with the exhaust sound, interior quality and nearly double the monthly lease payment. Oh well. That’s why I’m on my second F-Pace SVR haha
You're not wrong, but also this: he didn't wait for the "is it/isn't it" launch control to take effect. Boost by nature needs to build, so to pull out, throttle-brake it, then let off the brake isn't a proper attempt in any car, let alone one that has million computations per second measuring the variables to keep the power- and driveline "safe" for us and "lower warranty work" for OEM.
Great video once again. I have been torn between the Navarre blue S5 / RS 5 coupes and a 911. Obviously the 911 is the best and ideal car, but from a price conscious buyer, to me it seems that you either save $$ and go with the S5 or you go all the way and get a base 911 optioned the way you want it. Any thoughts on the S5, RS 5 vs 911 decision??
@@MotoManTV wow ok I had you figured for an R8 LeMans Special Edition or whatever, but I"m glad I found this (a year later lol). I traveled 3 hrs to pick up my Boxter & it took me so much time to sign, the salesman had to kindly call me out: "I don't understand. You came here for a 2-seat Porsche, but now you're on the fence for an Audi wagon??" You BET I am! lol
I own a 2021 RS5 (Nardo gray with black optics (looks much better and I get many great comments on this color combo). Audi discontinued the more aesthetic retractable screen design probably for safety/reliability reasons. Agree it has a tacked-on ipad look -- so do a lot of pad-centric EVs -- but agree strongly with another who commented that when driving, the line-of-site position is definitely an advantage. With most touchscreen cars you have to look down. I really like the easy of getting to this screen. All touchscreens are more difficult to use on bumpy roads, since it becomes easier to misplace your finger. That being said, the icons on the RS5 screen are large, very responsive, and have haptic feedback. The screen will likely be more integrated into the dash in the forthcoming B10 series, but I hope they do not move it down too much. Industry also seems to be heading in this segment to hybrid 4-pot ICE engines with electric motors along to help boost power. Will be interesting to see how that works out.
I had a 2018 RS5 -2 door and traded for a 2018 Panamera 4S, engine wise very similar, I put a Sprint Booster on both and it fixed the 0-3k lack of boost completely. The biggest difference by far is the PDK, it is so much better, the exhaust note in the Panamera (had sport exhaust in both) sounds better as well. RS5 was more nimble but not by as much as you would think based on size. Both great cars. The stuck on infotainment in the Rs5 drags down the interior in a big way.
RS5 is def faster in the coup version and reacts better to the APR tune for some reason. I can do 0-60 in 3.2 secs consistently where spas the Panamera S feels like a boat …similar to the Dodge Charger but with a better drivetrain and transmission
I'm gonna miss this generation of Audi designs when the 5 bow out. The new stuff can't hit the right note anymore, they're either too bland or too aggressive ... The understated elegance is sadly no more.
Thought that about the one before this . . . but got a good look at this one after shooting it and there are some delicious details throughout. Not as organic as the original but at least I don't have to argue about the nose:)
@@robertgordon5956 Porsche definitely massaged their version of it. Audi is the R&D powerhouse of the entire VW group, so I am sure they had some requirement to make sure it is Porsche-able in whatever way that meant.
@@MotoManTV It doesn't look too bad in that application, but I'm a black everywhere apart from wheels kinda guy. I think the chrome looks OK on the new Minis though (and others) but as a rule of thumb, not so good on performance models. It's less aggressive than black I guess is the point.
This is just my opinion, but Audi have totaled ruined the look of the RS5. The 2013~15 models were perfect, offering a good balance of subtlety mixed in with aggression. The new versions look like the designers have gone overboard with trying to make the car stand out. No longer does the career exude elegance with beautiful styling; but rather, it’s something that maybe a teen high strung on gushers would draw up. Why would Audi mess up a classic like this is something I always ponder when I see the new ones on the street 🤦🏽

@@user-wz4ei2iu6w interesting. So would an APR tune help that issue? I don’t drive using the paddles often so I could see that becoming a bit annoying
I am sure glad that you alluded to the lag. Hardly anyone else speaks of that elephant. Low torque used to be ubiquitous to Audi.
I love the exterior design.
Now when the 2022 RS3 comes to the US, that should be a fun review as well!
I agree!
These B9 AWD cars respond well to a larger rear sway bar for tuning out some understeer.
Audi nailed this car except for that stuck on ipad tablet. This would be a great DD that’s actually fun to drive. Audi just needs to fix that flat spot low in the torque curve. Spot on review as always MM!
With the virtual cockpit, they could "virtually" dump the second screen.
Rs5’s and rs4’s have more than 480hp broo, they are fucking beasts
Strange question but now that you’ve driven both: which is more fun? This or the base taycan cross turismo? By the time I option both, take into account tax incentives and gas savings the taycan appears to have a very similar cost of ownership
Size makes them very different experiences.
How is reliability on these compared to Honda and Toyota ?
You are off base on the color - they Daytona Pearl Grey is stunning!
R8 is #1, am I right? The RS5 Sportback has always looked sexy to me. Maybe they should've used that electric motor as torque fill
So I found it & tried to tag you, but wasn't happening. He's a wagon guy (I don't disagree), so the RS6 Avant is his car. The model is confirmed, though he didn't clarify the trim / configuration.
Loved watching you
I have a V8 RS5 and I just can’t get with the new one….. 8250RPM Dual Clutch….
So regarding the options game I completely agree that it would be better in a color. Thing is that if you opt for Ascari blue that is only contained in a package which, answering your question as to if you can opt for ceramics, is the ONLY way you can get ceramics fitted. Funny Audi is funny.
Audi needs to learn how to extract money out of their customers like Porsche does.
I’m thinking 🤔 of buying the S6
Do you think the RS 5 sport back is BETTER
Than the S6??
Can't say. Haven't driven one . . . Only this: ua-cam.com/video/g85q0xhCAQ8/v-deo.html
Great Review as always. Love this car color and all... Comparing it to the M3 Competition. I have owned more Audi's than BMW's but very hard to pick between the 2. Which do you prefer.
RS6 Avant
This is one good looking car
You, sir, have a lovely garage!
@@MotoManTV Thank you George, me and my wife work hard and both love cars!
If you wanna drive/review the coupe variation, I have a nice (lightly modified) green one waiting for you in LA :)
Couldn't believe this was the lightest RS car you've driven until I searched your channel. Either go drive the TT-RS before it's gone, or get into the new RS3 as soon as they allow you. Don't you know the best Audis are hopped up VWs?
Kumo already tried to get a TT-RS . . . not in the fleet anymore.
I like the RS5 sportback but I would go for the RS6 instead
Trying to buy this car used one day
Looking to buy one of these. If you can't beat the Germans, join them lol
Oh well. That’s why I’m on my second F-Pace SVR haha
very good car this rs models from audi.
Is this a prototype? Cuz that screen looks like an afterthought.
Kickdown delay in any rs car is a criminal and bad joke ...
3:09 crossed himself Orthodox
Could the RS3 change your mind of what your favorite Audi is?
Nice socks!
THANK YOU!
You’ve gotta drive the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and compare that to the RS5. Similar size and performance, but the Caddy engine has ridiculous power.
Will do.
You are asking ME if you should choose *anything* over a 911??????
Definitely go 911 no brainer!
@@MotoManTV I know....I figured that would be your response. Thanks
RS6 AVANT is your first best Audi
I don’t know. It’s hard to be proud when you have V6. The BMW straight six is more upper class and special.
I can't really argue with that . . .
What is the best car Audi makes? The RS6?
Yep, but I am biased towards wagons.
You came here for a 2-seat Porsche, but now you're on the fence for an Audi wagon??" You BET I am! lol
It’s a beauty but I do agree on the color
See Acura, that's how you do it!
#perfection
The iPad type screen is truly horrible!
Algorithm? Algorithm.
The Panamera 4S has the same exact engine as the RS5. That's why they feel so similar.
@@MotoManTV hahaha yeah.
Favorite: Audi RS3?
Porsche uses Audi/vw tech stop comparing
No.
@@MotoManTV well 🥸
No, don't make the belt red eww
This is not a Porsche engine stuffed into an Audi, it's very much the other way around. Audi made this engine, Porsche poached it.
Correct, but I suspect Porsche provided some assistance.
@@robertgordon5956 Porsche definitely massaged their version of it. Audi is the R&D powerhouse of the entire VW group, so I am sure they had some requirement to make sure it is Porsche-able in whatever way that meant.
Haha your taste is divisive! Surely hardly anyone else wants chrome on their car?
Satin finish chrome does not equal chrome. Have a look at this car: ua-cam.com/video/TNpOXb--zIQ/v-deo.html
Why would Audi mess up a classic like this is something I always ponder when I see the new ones on the street 🤦🏽
coupe is better..
