- What I didn’t catch in the video is another important trick: I hold the backside of the blade against the flat (lateral) side of the stone to make it flat and remove the burr. I use my hands, no jig is needed, 3 seconds are enough, I feel it with my fingers, just a quick touchup of the backside of the blade, which is as important as the grinded side.
Once a year, I sharpen the blade of our lawnmower. It's one of the reasons why I am very happy with the machine for 9 years now. Here I show you how I set up my Tormek T7.
I put the long side of the support bar in the bar holding clamp, this enables a long distance. Then I use the regular knife jig to hold the mower blade in the middle.
I mark the grinding edge with a pen to check if the stone is working evenly on the grinding side.
If the stone grinds too close to the edge, the sharpening angle is too high: The blade would be not as sharp as with a lower angle.
If the stone grinds too far from the edge, the angle is too small: Sharpening (grinding to the edge) would take long, the loss of steel on the blade and wear of the stone would increase and the edge would be initially sharp but not for long, as a small angle edge is more fragile.
If the grinding is too close or too far from the edge, I adjust the distance of the bar to change the grinding angle until my marking is evenly touched by the stone. Then I start to sharpen.
Depending on how blunt the blade is sharpening takes 2 - 5 minutes. If it’s extremely blunt, like sharpening the first time after years of use, it may take up to 12 minutes.
I use the SG-250 wich works welI. If I would sharpen things like that several times a year I would think about buying the blackstone SB-250. (The SJ-250 is fantastic, but of no use in the mower-blade-sharpening-business :-)
When sharpening, an approximately equal amount of steel should be taken off on both edges, otherwise, there would be an imbalance that could cause vibration and strain on the bearing of the mower. One can try to inspect the blade by balancing it on a screwdriver or something like that in the center hole, however, I never needed to do this.
Now our lawnmower works much quieter and uses less fuel. I think this will even add some years of life to the mower, so it’s definitely worth cutting with a sharp edge.
Probably best method for these blades. Minimal material removed seems about right.
I really like the slow speed of your grinder! Seems like it would be easier to make corrections without removing so much metal rather than that wheel turning at a million rpm! 😂😂
YEAH!,...,I ALWAYS wondered why they called him
Looks very dry, you probably want some water on that stone! Great video👍
Stone is running in a water bath.
@@StephenBrewer89observation skills are non existent, you could hear the water
For this 10 second operation, absolutely not required.
Looks good just used a hand operated whee on my blade👍🏾😮
I USED TO WORK
That blade looked pretty well new when you started
Might not be balanced and he's gotta take a little off to get it there.
THAT'S IT!!!...THEY FINNA BUS DEM CHAINS
Nice job!
Using a tormek to sharpen lawn mower blades is equivalent to using a scalpel to cut your steak for dinner..
Lawn mower blades is one of those things it's more needed, it's accurate af because it doesn't take off more than needed. Meaning far less chance of introducing imbalance ^^
EVER WORKED FOR GILLETTE?
Perfect!
Bro you still have sharpie on, you didn’t even take any material off. Wtf did I just watch 😂
Set the angle…grind until sharp…
What’s the name of that wheel? Foot pedal battery operated??
30 degree and you still got pitting in the blade rub a skim on the underside and something ppl are missing to sharp will dull them faster
Nice! What kind of wheel?
Thank you, SG-250 Tormek
Brotha gon cut himseld
Tormek is too slow for that. I use an angle grinder with flap disks, 40 grit.
I hope you didn’t pay alot for that.
Bet you did. 😂
Blades should never be razor sharp, look at brand new ones, never sharp, best thing to sharpen them is flap disc on 4" grinder.
Brand new ones are dull
@@wilburyuencause they last longer with a thicker edge
