  • This 1985 John Deere 750 sat in a barn for 20-30 years. Only 166 original hours. Changed fluids, few small parts, fixed tires, and bleed diesel fuel lines, and then it fired right up!

    I have one with a loader on it. It’s my prime mover . Tough little machine . They are big enough to do real work and small enough that one man can Handle most trouble it might get into. Parts on line are not really a problem yet. Then again I haven’t had to get that much. I did put in anew clutch after moving a 2.5 ton rock....my bad. Keep up on the fluids and filters and they are very dependable.

    Wow! Lucky you! I have a 650 that my dad bought used about 30 years ago. Yep. The plastic sediment bowl will crack and leak. Had that happen. Also had to replace the fuel cap/gauge assembly because water was getting in the fuel. So I got good a bleeding lines until I figured that out.
    I saw another one once on FB Marketplace they couldn’t crank. And sure enough there was an oily spot right beneath the sediment bowl.
    Only problem with these is they’re discontinuing some of the parts. I really need a new hydraulic fluid cap but they’re discontinued. Also watch the boot around the shifter. It may dry rot and leak water into the hydraulic fluid.

    You're very lucky in 3 ways. One, finding that tractor in the first place. 2nd, very lucky you didn't blow that diesel because it can NOT handle starting fluid and 3rd lucky you didn't have the huge mouse nest catch on fire with the wires chewed through. Very lucky on all 3. You should have fixed the tires so you could load it on the trailer and checked everything out before attempting to start. If a diesel doesn't start right up there is something wrong, find and fix the problem. Glad to see you did find out how to correctly bleed the system but that busted clear fuel guage is a good indication that the fuel tank probably needs to be cleaned. Yes, I do have a nice 1984 750, 4 wd, with power steering and the turf tires. Love it. Hopefully you picked up the 3 pt. cutter and what was the green thing by the front door?

    • @ptnelsonster
      @ptnelsonster  3 роки тому +3

      Yes on all three! 1) Extremely lucky to find it. 2) This is my first experience with a diesel, so I just didn't know. And 3) I had cleaned most of the mouse nest out, it wasn't until I dug deeper that I discovered how much was still in there - mouse nest + diesel fuel (from leaky return line) + exposed wires.... very lucky indeed!! This is why I keep going to church... :)

    I owned one a few years ago. Seat is tiny and the place for your feet is really small. Tough to work clutch and brakes with size 13 feet. I put a lot of weight on front end to use a shredder. Sold it for $5,000 to a guy who put on a rototiller. Since low 1st gear is so slow, it should work ok for that.

    • @ptnelsonster
      @ptnelsonster  3 роки тому

      Yeah, it’s tough to get on and off of cause foot space is so small. Plus the clutch is too close to the steering arm that it’s easy to miss the clutch sometimes.
      I’ve been rototilling with it this week and it handles a 50” tiller without any trouble in 2nd gear.

    • @ptnelsonster
      @ptnelsonster  3 роки тому +1

      This is what the owner told me. But it clearly didn't sit in that exact spot for 30 years; it had to have sat outside for a decade or so, by the looks of the rust and sun-bleaching. If it had sat in that barn the entire time then it would have been in much better shape.

      @@thepitpatrol You are absolutely wrong there buddy. You must be careful using starting fluid on all diesels but this engine cannot handle it at all. It's the design of this diesel. This is a precombustion chamber design. Some diesels even come with remote starting fluid assist from the factory including John Deere equipment. Says right here in my original John Deere 750 owners manual. Page 18, "Do Not Use Starting Fluid in this engine." Even has a slash through a can of John Deeres fluid. Talks about using the Thermo-Start which is standard equipment and/or using coolant heater that I installed and using booster battery. So you go ahead and use the starting fluid on your Yanmar diesels but I'm not willing to explode mine. I'll plug it in for 2 hrs and have it start like summer time and avoid a major bill.
