Excellent review, Jimmy! The Broken Earth Trilogy is among my top five fantasy stories of all time. Jemisin masterfully incorporates themes of oppression and resilience into the three books. I actually like each succeeding book a little more than the previous one. I still remember having to pick my jaw off the floor after finishing book three.
Started reading today: the second person perspective is so unique it’s actually thrilling. I’m about a third of the way through and can’t wait to keep going!
This review feels like I got a Christmas present early! Fantastic review - you did an amazing job summarizing the beginning of this amazing story. Jamison has a gift for delivering a huge emotional impact with one simple sentence. I love the magic system - Earth magic, nature - seems so logical for a magic system and is my favorite. I know a while back all of her work has been sold as far as movie/tv rights - so some film adaptations are on the way! Absolutely agree on this story’s uniqueness.
I'm similar in that when I returned to reading SFF I made sure to pick up this trilogy but haven't taken the plunge yet. Love the style of your non spoiler reviews, definitely makes me want to get to this next year.
I remember the Chatting With Nutts you were talking about. I asked you to say what The Fifth Season was about without using the word second person. The actual answer made me want to read it way more
One of the first adult fantasy books I’ve ever read 😭 after this, I feel like I’m forever going to be chasing another book that is as gorgeous as this one
Just finished the whole trilogy a few days ago. Fantastic stuff! Didn't crack my personal all time favorite series list, but this is one I will be thinking of for a while. I will read more of the author's work in the future
Thanks for the review. I've been considering picking this up soon since I've heard so much about it. I was in the same boat as you though that I hadn't heard about the premise of the book. Loved the review!
No idea when I'll get to these, 2022, Fantasy wise, will largely be me prioritising finishing/caught up on Malazan BoTF and Dresden Files after which I'll be taking a hiatus from Fantasty for a bit but maybe I'll make this a priority post hiatus.
"The Fifth Season" is a beloved book for me as well. Because I was not familiar with SF elements, the other two books in "The Broken Earth" felt more challenging for me. I am hoping The Broken Binding will do them a SE for their subscription so I can read them again, this time in the original language.
You did such a great job describing your experience with this book. I always struggle with recommending it to people because it's so out there in every way, from the story structure to the plot to the second person perspective. Kind of like recommending an 'artsy' film: it's great but not what most people expect so not everyone will vibe with it. But I agree it's a book that provokes great discussions! The first book was definitely my favorite just because some of the revelations made my jaw drop but I also really enjoyed the end of the entire trilogy.
Great review! Just found your videos and I really enjoy how you articulate your thoughts and opinions. I had this book spoiled for me a while back so I never read it but this has me thinking I'll still enjoy it
That’s high praise. I’ll be going in with high expectations; I’m finishing Ship of Destiny right now. At the end, you said you would put it at the top with your other favorite trilogies such as MST, Hobb, etc. I’m curious, has your opinion on Realm of the Elderlings changed, raised, or lowered at all since finishing it?
@@thefantasynuttwork Thank you for answering! As I finish Liveships, I’ve found I’ve changed my mind on the small problems I initially had with Farseer. That one trilogy has only gotten better for me. I’ve been rewatching all of the Chatting with Nutts episodes; hopefully I’ll finally be able to catch the next one live. I hope you’ve had a great weekend, thanks for the content!😄
Yeah it’s where I started, haven’t read anything else from her though. The trilogy is great and I think book one is still one of the best fantasy books I’ve read
I'd like to but not sure when. There's a chance I do a "why you should read" or something too. I have a lot of reviews to do that I've been putting off 😅
@@thefantasynuttwork cool, if you decide to do a spoiler discussion slowly red would be a great guest if you can get him. Thanks for watching!

They're all three great! I just found book 1 ending to be an OMG moment, my wife loves book three the most!
Appreciate the compliment friend 😊
I was blown away after finishing book three as well. Such a powerful, yet bittersweet ending.

Love to see it
Man I’m so glad you enjoyed the Fifth Season, and the series as well. It’s one of my favorites. I plan to read everything she’s written too.
Thanks man, me too!

Thank you so much. If this were to be adapted I'd be very interested to see how they pull off the twist. I'm all for it!!!
I just started this book. Having NO IDEA about the second person. But I’m LOVING it.

@@thefantasynuttwork Hopefully! I love that feeling. That’s why we read haha
Awesome review! I’ve had these in my audio library for a long time and was hesitant to pick them up, so this was the impetus I needed!
Thanks man, I'm glad it may encourage you to begin. It's definitely a polarizing book but it resonates with me!
Well said. Gonna read more Jemisin soon. Will probably start her Inheritance trilogy some time next year.
I definitely wanna get to it soon!
I’m currently reading The Wretched of Muirwood. Fabulous page turner by Jeff wheeler. Fifth season sounds great
Just finished book 1 and it blew. my. mind.
Definitely a defining work in the sci fantasy genre. Masterpiece.
Agreed!

You perfectly captured/explained all the best parts of this book (so far) 🙏 Right, stop distracting me, back to it
Finish it!!!
I just ordered the trilogy. I don’t know when I’ll get to read it, I’ve got over 60 books in my TBR. But I’ll add this to the list.
The list only seems to grow haha
The ones you want to talk about and that stick in your head are the best! Going to keep this one high on the list
I hope you enjoy 🤘

RotE has only improved with time. It's either my 1st or 2nd favorite series of all time and I think Hobb is the best fantasy author ever
