Blacktongue Thief by the same author is also good, although definitely more fantasy. If you want great horror/fantasy/sci-fi recommendations, Shades Of Orange channel on UA-cam is the place, she reads everything!
Vorrh by Brian Catling. Trilogy but Book 1 could work as a standalone. The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. And to some extent Vita Nostra by Sergei and Marina Dyachenko. NB I did not personally like Vorrh or Vita Nostra.
Chaosmage by yours truly. However, it is the third in a trilogy. It's a....sort of post apocalyptic horror thriller, in an abandoned city, on the edge of nowhere, where's there a mystery that needs investigating and there are things that go bump in the night...and the day.
Amazon is basically giving this series away right now...99 cents per book if you get the Kindle editions. I snagged the trilogy. Very excited to give it a go.
Really happy to hear that you had a good time with this one. It's interesting to hear your thoughts, because for me it was the characters that pulled me through, haha. I can totally see why their dynamic might not work that well for everyone, but it was exactly the type of light-hearted banter that I needed at the time. The worldbuilding is indeed outstanding though. I think you will really enjoy the direction this series takes over the next two books, because they have more depth and nuance imo! Great review as always!!
Fantastic review, Jimmy. I read this early this year and thought I would love it. Even listening to you talk about the elements, I’m once again convinced that this is something I should love. Sadly, the characters didn’t click with me and I found some of the plotting to be a smidge too convenient. I haven’t picked up book 2, but maybe I’ll grab it when you decide to pick it up!
Man this review is so we'll thought out, so clearly exposed! That's why you're my favorite booktuber. You touch and discuss points that most reviewers don't even bother to mention (if they even see those). And you're able to give us a clear picture of the book without spoiling it. A applaude your craftsmanship. And you're going better and better. Yes I have this book on my wishlist but after this review I'll make sure to buy it sooner 💞
Great review and so far this is a awesome book great world building awesome characters in the pacing is not slow at all I love the different mashups horror sci-fi fantasy everything you want here I started it yesterday and I'm about 60% done I usually don't read this fast but this one's been excellent
This book didn't click for me, but good news for kindle users in the US, they are available for very cheap now, so definitely worth to give it a try now at least.
Great review! i was eyeing this one the other day on Kobo, and another one that caught my eye was Shadow of the Gods by John Gywnn, have you reviewed that one? i love some of the international books, i need something fresh after i finish Fire & Blood GoT.
Thanks for the review, sir Jimmy. It's always fun to see what others think of a book I read. 🥰 I loved this trilogy. Especially because of the world building and the horror elements. And I was very attached to Noon by the end of the trilogy. 😊 But I agree with you that the characters are not completely fleshed out enough. I think this was only her second trilogy, so she can still grow. 😊 I will definitely pick up her next work.
I feel the same way about the first book as you did. I really liked the world building but the characters weren't a favorite. I really liked the first book though, and then I read the second book, and didn't like it at all. I felt the characters were only there to move the plot, and weren't actually characters with motivations that made sense. The world building that I loved in the first book, wasn't in the second book. I'm trying to decide whether to read the third just to finish the trilogy or not.
Liked the book and the ideas. Didn't love the characters I dont think I'll remember any of them after I'm done. But yes I enjoy reading it. Is it being nitpicky that it really bothers me that there's not a map? I'm almost done with book too. Feels like a very easy read for me.
I liked books 1 and 2 just fine, like you, but book 3 was really special. I loved it. Also, in book 2 some of my favorite characters in the trilogy get introduced, plus some other characters get expanded. Overall I thought it was a good series, with an OK beginning and a great conclusion.
Bobby B is back behind bellowing at me, and I feel uncomfortable. I've heard such mixed things about this series haha, I will definitely be checking it out because it sounds so weird, which I respect regardless.
Just finished this book and it was great! I’m just confused by the cover…seems like the cover for the second book should be the cover of the first. It’s very confusing what is even on the cover of the first book. Can anybody explain??
@@thefantasynuttwork I started the second book, and it’s a war beast from the second book. Sure seems like somebody screwed up the covers for 1 and 2 😂
Thanks for the amazing review, Jimmy! I’m also into slower paced, more stylized, more character-driven fantasy, so I think I’ll pass on this one for now.
I have all three books in paperback. I live in Ohio. I got them on Amazon, I think last year. It’s been a while since I read them. But they were awesome.
I love this series but I see how it could hit some the same way it did you. Personally, I practically climbed over dead bodies to get a set of the hard bound edition from The Broken Binding. ;-)
@@thefantasynuttwork I thought you was gonna go off on Terry Goodkind book series and anything he touches. Considering the book community hates him for his ideaological driven fantasy. Lol.
