  • What is Meralgia Paresthetica? Neurosurgeon Dr Arun L Naik explains this recurring condition. Meralgia Paresthetica is thigh pain caused by tight jeans, clothing, belts and corsets. Meralgia Paresthetica symptoms are pain and numbness. Meralgia Paresthetica signs are thigh pain. Meralgia Paresthetica treatment is by medications and lifestyle modification. Meralgia Paresthetica relief is by proper treatment. Meralgia Paresthetica exercises helps in these patients. Meralgia Paresthetica stretches are explained.
    #meralgiaparesthetica #thighpain #meralgiaparestheticatreatment
This causes intense tingling, numbness and burning pain in ones outer thigh. Often seen in teenagers wearing tight jeans, this condition makes them miserable.
Meralgia parasthetica is the classical thigh pain caused by compression of your lateral femoral cutaneous nerve which supplies sensation to your thigh. This nerve runs under the inguinal ligament, which runs along your groin. So when you wear tight fitting trousers, Tight clothing, belts or corsets you can get this condition. Other conditions causing MP are Pregnancy, Obesity and diabetes.
The commonest Symptom of MP is intense Tingling and numbness in the outer part of your thigh. Burning pain also is seen in between episodes of tingling. Mostly it will be on one side only and never crosses your knee joint. The pain starts gradually and progresses slowly. The pain comes in episodes and may vanish for a few months and recur again. The pain is very unpredictable.
How to make a diagnosis of MP?
When i see any patient with thigh pain, i take the history of their lifestyle, clothing and profession. I do a detailed physical exam. I make the diagnosis of MP based on clinical details only. Nerve conduction tests help us diagnose the condition in doubtful cases. Very rarely, if I am in doubt, I may ask for an MRI scan to rule out any other cause of MP.
Treatment: lifestyle changes improve the pain very much. I always advise them to wear loose clothes and avoid tight belts and corsets. Diabetics should control their blood sugar levels. Obese persons will get relief with reducing their weight. As a home remedy, i advise them to apply ice packs to their groin to relieve pain. IN the long term, i advise my patients to perform yoga which helps many patients. Finally I prescribe medications to control the pain. In acute pain, i advise Physical therapy, specialized exercises and stretches. Many patients get relief with ultrasound treatment. In severe cases, i give Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to provide symptom relief. Rarely, surgery is necessary to correct any compression on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Surgery is only recommended for people who try other treatments with no relief.
    Diseases similar to MP are:
Spinal disc prolapse, Intervertebral disc prolapse, Intervertebral disc herniation, Disc bulge, Spinal canal stenosis, Spinal myelopathy, Compressive myelopathy, Pinched nerves in the neck, Pinched nerves in the back, Pinched nerves in the lower back, Spinal stenosis, Spinal arthritis, Spinal fractures, Spinal osteoporosis, Spondylitis,
Spondylosis, Spinal degeneration, Spondylolisthesis, Tethered cord syndrome, Spinal dysraphism, Spinal myelomeningocele, Spinal bifida, Spinal cord injury, Spinal degeneration, Spinal tumors and Spinal infections.

I always thought my pain was caused due to pain from my sciatica, but after watching a few videos about sciatic nerve pain I realized that’s not what my pain was at all! This video says exactly what is going on with me and I am so glad to finally know what’s causing my pain. Thank you for putting out this video I now have hope and realize this is not necessarily a lifelong issue that I will have to deal with. i’ll be looking for your other video that shows exercises that I can do. Thank you for helping me understand what is causing my pain.

I am so glad I came across your video. I have been suffering from this type of pain for a year. I don’t wear tight clothing, so that is not the cause. However I have had 3 back surgeries, 2 spinal fusions, (L4 region) a laminectomy, and a bundle of nerves rerouted. Maybe this could be causing the issue. I also lose my balance some times going from a sitting position to a standing position. I don’t want more surgery. I see the doctor next week. I am hoping PT will help. I don’t like taking medication. But, I can’t lay on my right side and have a hard time sleeping

I have had this for almost 40 years and it's no joke. Comes and goes? I wish, for me it's been progressive. I can't walk but a mile and it hurts, pain dissipates when I sit for a couple minutes but the numbness is forever.

This is the best explanation I have ever heard about my pain! This doctor has hit the nail directly on the head. He has described my pain exactly. I have been dealing with this for several years and no doctor has ever mentioned this condition as the cause of my pain. I am so thankful that I happened upon this video. I wish this doctor was in my area. I would rush out to him right away. How can I get my neurologist to embrace this fact and start treatment for me on this condition?

    • @BethVonBlack

I literally sat down with a consultant neurologist yesterday and said 'I think I have meralgia paresthetica - the issue started when I began lifting heavy in the gym, putting the weight across my groin' and she said I was spot on. I'll be having a steroid injection into the groin in due course. It's really helpful to sound like you know what you're talking about - usuing clinical terms and such. It shows you've done your research! good luck :)

Sir , I rarely use jeans/ I don't belong to the categories causing meralgia parasthetica.
An year back I got severe back pain and after 6 months when pain is not reducing and when my right tigh used to feel senseless and pinching pain I went for mri and diagnosed disc bulge in L 4-L5.
    Which doesn't cause meralgia.
No one is able to diagnose it.
    What can I do now.
