  • This video explains Meralgia Paresthetica, a compression neuropathy of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve of the Thigh. There are a number of clinical tests described as well as supportive investogations such as USS and MRI scans, and of course, Neuriophysiology. Evidence based treatment is somewhat sparse, but the outcomes from a Cochrane review are presented including neurolysis and neurectomy. I am 65 and have had this for about four years. One tip, use a rolling pin to roll the thigh to loosen up tightness of the tissue.

Extremely well explained, thank you. I have, like many other ppl on here, have suffered with this for some 15 years. It has now impacted on my quality of life, e.g. not being able to enjoy country walks, unable to stand for long etc. I don't want to go down the surgical route as it's not successful enough for my liking and, for me at this stage, the risks outweigh the benefit/s. I have been prescribed the neuro medications, lost weight etc. to no effect the only thing that works are painkillers, Tramadol in particular. I am well aware of the downsides of Tramadol and GP's are increasingly reluctant to prescribe them. Speaking personally I would rather run the risk of addiction than continue to suffer. I do not use that word (suffer) lightly. Those with this chronic condition will understand! However, thanks once again.

I started experiencing this kind of pain after I was given a diclofenac injection on my left thigh.Initially I was only feeling numb, loss of sensation in some portion of my outer thigh, then a week later this scorching pain that feels like as if something is biting inside of my thigh came up. No swollen,no redness for me to worry that it could be abscess. Been rubbing diclofenac gel for weeks now yet this pain ain't going away! It's frustrating!

Im pretty sure I have this. My left outer thigh started hurting a few days ago. Not burning just shooting pain. No relief when stretching out the quad. My jobs have me standing for quite some time 7 days a week. And I also have an inguinal hernia on my left side close to my groin. Hernia repair is the end of this month so hopefully that stops the pain. Although I haven’t had a doctor/physiotherapists opinion yet either.

I have been suffering from this symptoms for past 22 years.for past one year I feel the area of numbness has spread a bit. I was unable to pin point what was causing it. Initially I suspected that the cause could be leprosy or something. But I now know it is not. The problem aggravates when I am sitting on a chair for a long time or standing. Physically I am stout. During winter I feel the problem aggravates. I get tingling sensation, sometimes I feel ants crawling or something and at times I feel skin is stretching causing pain. The surface of the skin feels dull having little sensation.

Hi. Very good explanation of this condition. I am a 58 yo male who is still actively playing football and badminton. I am of average build and good bmi. I have had this condition for 12 months now and only just self diagnosed. I’ve just been to the doctors who sent me for a back X-ray and am awaiting a nerve clinic appointment. Not looking forward to the injection side of it but if it helps to stop the pain that would be great. It is getting worse now as almost the whole side and front of my thigh from knee to hip is numb with shooting pains now and again. At night it feels like boiling water is being poured over it. I shall certainly be glad if I can be cured from this.

This is the best and most complete information I have found. I suffer from this condition on my Left thigh. My doctor said it was because of my fat belly and did nothing about it. Recently I had Left Knee Monocondyl Arthroplasty (partial knee replacement surgery). I forgot to mention this condition. They used nerve blocks in combination with an epidural and I believe they may have blocked this nerve at the knee. My symptoms on this thigh after surgery have been worse on the neuropathy. A doctor I saw thought it came from my spine and has prescribed a massive dose of muscle relaxant four times a day for a month. But I never knew this could stem from the uterine fibroid. What specialist can I seek to see for this condition, a neurologist, general practitioner, who? Any thoughts or suggestions? I hope you can respond.

Crickets in reply for two years running as of this writing. I was impressed by their presentation, but took off massive points because your question was ignored. Well, this is two years later and I'm medical laity, but I'm going to take a crack at answering based on the fact that I see a neurologist because of neuropathy. If you were experiencing neuropathic pain, I would venture a guess that you needed a neurologist. I hope your pain has resolved by this point.

After a scyatica attack triggered by lifting a big and heavy furnace and a wrong stepping to avoid a really bad falling on the floor, I started to feel this strange prickling on my leg. I enjoy exercising like Long Walks and sadly this has been somewhat affecting me from doing consistent long walks like I use to do in my mid 20's to early 40's it's when my right-side thigh would get warm and now i get a tingly sensation when Im trying to go to sleep and i get the sensation and I must raise my Right Let with a small pillow to neutralize the tingly and somewhat light inflammation that goes away in a minute before I fall asleep.

Believe me ,this is a bloody painful thing to have. I started with a little numbness and feeling of ice being placed upon my thigh when standing for a long period , it has developed into a feeling that I'm being stung by a 100 bees or being bitten by a deadly snake , just by walking about. Only down my right hand side. No painkillers work . Need some info to go to my DR and say this painkiller will help. I will obviously work on weight loss etc. and wearing loose clothing myself but in the meantime I need something to alleviate the incredible pain.

can the pain radiate up to the torso? And groin area ? The pain is just burning there’s no numbness nothing. I just have it on my left thigh and it radiates to my leg and knee and my entire torso feels like it’s on fire as well. Walking and moving doesn’t make a difference. The doctor suspects anxiety ..

Appreciate you taking the time to explain this. Quite technical, but my takeaways are that a) my condition if fairly benign (although a little painful at times) and b) has a good chance of resolving itself over time. My main concern is the risk factors. Since I'm a 59 y/o male, within my normal BMI, don't wear tight clothing, I'm now wondering if I'm diabetic or am unknowingly being exposed to lead - both seem unlikely. Since I don't own a car, I walk and cycle everywhere, maybe this is the key factor. Any thoughts?

I had hernia surgery 1+ yrs ago. All of a sudden thigh pain lasted 2 weeks then went away, then a few months later a patch of skin that felt sunburned but showed nothing externally, went away. That sunburned feeling came back 2 weeks ago along with a rythmic (and sometimes random) buzzing sensation like a cell phone in my leg. No muscle weakness. Is this consistent with this condition???? Thanks, good video.

Thank you for the video Sir. I seem to have recently developed MP (my diagnosis only) but it only affects me when in bed (so it has the bonus of getting me up and out!) I have myelomeningocele so attributed the burning sensation to that at first - albeit a very late onset after 60+ years but now think it may be due to weight gain as a result of Metazapine therapy. However at present it is not too bothersome.

Anyone suggesting neurolysis of a somatic sensory nerve clearly has insufficient experience in pain management. Neurolytic destruction of the LFCN will very likely produce horrible anesthesia dolorosa. Ignore this recommendation. Pulsed RF, well, maybe. But full neurolysis.... don't do it.

Mine started at about 23 in my left thigh, just a small patch... I'm 59 now and have it in both thighs. The right side is worse than my left and it drives me crazy.

It is a very painful condition, my left outer thigh burning standing/walking to long. Does not go past the knee. Once I sit its fine. Its horrible and hopefully it resolves in time..
