- A playthrough of a 21-question episode from Berkeley Systems' 1995 game show trivia game for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, You Don't Know Jack!
The majority of modern trivia games in video game form have YDKJ! to thank for many things. It single-handedly established the format that nearly every other game in the genre followed (and many still do, including its own multitude of sequels and updates), and this is for very good reason.
Jellyvision seemed to just get it. Trivial Pursuit is a board game and requires no electricity. How can a video game do something similar in a whole new way to justify itself? How do you make it appeal to a younger generation, and make it sell?
The answer? Humor, writing, and money. Simple, right?
It's obvious in hindsight, but the YDKJ!'s production was a real revelation at the time. It had TONS of commentary and quips from the chatterbox of a host, and it wasn't throwaway fluff. Nearly all of it had some layer or allusion, innuendo, intimation... whatever you want to call it. It's unapologetically 'adult' in its presentation, but it's never gross or embarrassingly inappropriate. It's just clever and witty, and it's all well delivered. I'm sure it was not cheap to develop, given the staggering amount of prescripted content on offer.
Even though there are virtually no graphics, don't judge it too quickly. This package is the real deal, and makes for a killer time with a group of friends around the keyboard.
And when you end the game, don't touch anything! Those commercial breaks are some of the best jokes! So much so that I compiled all of the commercials from the first four games in the series into a single video, which may watch here: • You Don't Know Jack! V...
And for the PS1 version of the game:

if you had a Windows 95 PC, you had this game. And it was glorious. So, so, so good. This paired nicely with Grim Fandango.
Was great to play with family too.
4:12 I’ve loved question 4 for 20 years ❤️. It’s the question that cares 😊
Don't play you Don't know Jack 2011 then
dont play the 2011 version if you love 4our that much
Question 4 is why I’m here 😂
Of all the jingles for each question number in YDKJ 1 question 4 has the best one! It’s definitely among the best question jingles across the whole series!
Spoiler: 4our dies in YDKJ 2011.
The very first game in the now prolific trivia series, this 1995 introduction to YDKJ was so far beyond anything else out at the time, and is still just as good as it ever was. It's pretty plain to see where many modern trivia/game show games get their "inspiration" from! ;)
A trivia game created by people who didn't like trivia games. (They did an epic job.)
Plus, Nate Shapiro is an icon. So is Cookie.
Before you play this again, you might want to Google a few things!!!
This was one of the coolest trivia games around. I miss it :(
I recommend the jackbox party pack games
You’ve never heard of jackbox then
@@Hey_Jamie just recently I did
@@crabstubular3251Yeah
What you mean you miss it? Isn't it still available
So many great memories of this game and Space Cadet Pinball!
I remember Space Cadet Pinball and a peculiar Jimmy Neutron game in a before-school program.
@@lanceminecraftzplazutub2604 Are you me? Same lol
Fun fact!
The "giberish" question music from "YDKJ Full Stream" (2018,) is an updated version of said music in this game.
I had no business playing this at 9 years old....oh well, blame my parents🤷♀️😂
Tom Gottlieb, the voice of 🍪 Masterson, is best known as the voice of Whacked-Out Sports.
Dana Long Wait seriously? I like that show
Well, this host is Nate Shapiro.
@@midston5843 cookie’s the sign in host

Ah memories LUL They just released YDKJ again with jackbox 5. What a time to be alive.
yeah
Lmao why was I yelling “Yankee doodle went to town!” Like I’m the one who’s playing?😂
Where’s question six
@@aiden_gameplayThe gibberish question was apparently question 6ix
CHILDHOOD!
At 6:48, the host wonders about the song Yankee Doodle. Well, the lyrics make no sense without a quick vocab lesson. It was a British pub song that belittled America.
Yankee - Unsophisticated colonist
Doodle - Scatterbrained goofball, like some doodling through life
Dandy - Someone who adopted the flamboyant clothing and hairdos of British aristocrats
Macaroni - A wild hair style worn by some young British trendsetters at the time
So Yankee Doodle depicts a dimwitted American colonist trying to pass himself off as rich and trendy by sticking a feather in his cap and calling it macaroni. An insult, right? But when the underdog American colonists booted the Redcoats back to England, the song became an ironic American anthem of sorts,
This was *SUCH* a great game, but... unfortunately, nearly all of my friends (and girlfriends) hated playing it because they hated losing. 🙄
I lost plenty of times, and that was half the fun! Not to mention when you 'screwed' another player to force them to answer, hahahaha! 😁
“Question Number 16! (And I like it too!)”
"Hear me go pound the pull very tush. The monkey isn't legal" LOL.
(waits to enter name)
"Hey, player-"
(enters name)
"Ah! ...Thank you."
Oh man I remember playing this with my family, ah the memories😊
Wow, it’s actually surreal seeing the gibberish question being hosted by Nate.
This is one of the first games I ever played and I’m so in love with it
An encapsulation of my childhood. Thanks for posting!
Wish they would make it an app!! Would love to play it again 😭

Loved this game.
Love the Question 4 intro!
9:26 that's a funny jingle
My math teacher does this game with the class.
Lived this game as a kid
its funny until you have to pay $300 for the glass eye xD
Lovely.
The style is so much for me.
4:11 - The Question That Cares
If you like number four do not play you Don't know Jack 2011
The Question That Cared
If anyone is wondering who that is doing the voicing it's Nate Shapero aka Cookie Masterson's brother "yes they're brothers"
Cookie's in the green room in this. For fun, try giving him no name.
Woah woah woah hold on. I know that Nate Shapiro and Buzz Lippman are cousins
When the heck was it said that Nate Shapiro and Cookie Masterson were brothers?
@@MoonlightMirageBecause Nate's and Cookie's voice actors, (Harry and Tom Gottlieb) are brothers.
This was technically the first time I’ve ever sweared since I always watched my mom and dad play it and back when I was 3 I didn’t know what “you don’t know Jack” actually meant. Good times
I had this when I was in college in the mid/late 90s.
This game was ahead of it's time.
OMG. NOST-FUCKING-STALGIA
I remember playing this on a demo CD that had a 3D environment in which you chose the games. I can remember many of the games, just not their titles. Captain Quazar is the only other title I remember.
Was it the full game? Or just a demo?
@@abbycollins I do believe it was a full version of the game, but it's been so long I'm not sure.
Windows games sampler 98. There was a hovering spacecraft in the lobby, and you could "sample" games via terminals in the alien world.
Edit: windows games sampler 95 number 2.
@@diogeneslantern18 That's the one. Thank you so much, I'm going to try and find a copy to download. See if it works lol.
I loved this game
FINALLY! I FOUND A VOL. 1 GAMEPLAY!
Wow the memories 🥲💜
I remember this gam that the announcer sounded like David Spade lol
Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul Reubens, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 70 in late July 2023. He played the host of the game show adaptation which aired in 2001.
2:34 I swear that's a sound effect I've heard before. I didn't know that Sly Cooper of all games used Sound Effects from this game. That sounds exactly the same as the Time Trial Clock Sound Effect. O_O
That's an orchestra hit! Used in pretty much every late 80s/early 90s pop song ever made
I remember this game
I remember this
I dream that those Vietnamese nostalgia posts on Tiktok cover *THIS GAME.*
Ever try more YDKJ games? Supposedly maybe the 2011 or 2015 versions. But it's all up to you.
2011 and 2015 were basically the same thing but 2011 had better questions more fleshed out gameplay and wasn't meant to be shortened for a party pack
Oh yeah and the best questions segways in You Don't know Jack history
I came across my old keyboard with the “buzzer” stickers still on the keys. Might just have to boot the old girl up.
Haha that's awesome! What a throwback.
I had an Apple Mac Performa ! And I played this game
4:12
I recognize this from Full Sream
Watching old JDKJ! is so weird... I remember this game so vividly, but it's just so quaint. They really have improved each game. Well, except for Buzz. No one liked Buzz.
I liked buzz! He certainly improved his line reading once we got to the ride.
Used to to type in swear words as a kid to answer the gibberish questions and the host would always tell me off.
15:15 instantly makes this best game in the world of all time 100/10 i love you wile e coyote
How did you get this to run? I haven't had any luck getting 95/98/XP games to run in a Windows 8.1 Environment
PeteSanctions Install Windows 3.1 in Dosbox, it runs perfectly from there
What's the best way to go about doing that?
ALL. THE. FEELS.
Lol ditto girl xD
Lmaooo heyy
I don't remember watching this 5 months ago 😂
Nice
I spent waaaay to many hours playing this game. Only reason (among others) to have a pc.
There's also a PlayStation version that's pretty good.
Nice game play
Let me put it this way:
If you 💭 that every time John Cena gets screwed out of all his chances to become a 17-time champion, only for him to angrily snap, go all John Rambo, continually getting chance after chance until he finally breaks Flair's record... THEN YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doodle, is that his name or is that his hobby haha I remember this game from back then. He used to be like in every type of media store, like Best buy or fye, if it existed back then, or like at Walmart.. I just suddenly had this random thought of like.. does anyone else know about this game? LOL
Now, four doesn't care. Most of the time.
But why? WHY doesn't four care that much? It seemed like a nice number.
7:48
Excuse me?
What makes that monkey so illegal?
Two full minutes before the first question is asked. Jeez.
What happens if on a Gibberish Question, you type F*** You? Also, what happens if you type F*** You as your name?

i had 90% right how do you have 100 you play tomuch
Did you Google the answers?
Why was nonsensical stuff going in the beginning of the video?
The idea is that you’re at the television studio where YDKJ is filmed at. And you’re hearing all the chatter from the other employees who work there and some of the various commercials going on. Then Cookie comes along to get you all signed in to participate and tell you what to do.
There’s at least a dozen or so different intros you hear every time you boot the game up.
Insufferable game.
