I tried pottery once and I found it sooooo difficult! You make it look like child's play. I love how you present your videos, you're hilarious and all the while throwing huge 15 lb flower pots, I'm impressed 👏
thanks for this one!! I'm going to be glazing a water crock / 5gallon water dispenser soon and had no clue how I would go about it ... Appreciate this!
Wow the pot turned out nice, good job. I like the northern lights glaze with the red pooling down, good contrast I think. Looks like it all turned out good.
I've been holding back on Pottery for a while now and every time I watch your videos excited about clay again I've never made a flower pot I hope soon when I get a new wheel I'll try to make a flower pot
I saw that candle holder on Instagram and was immediately in love with it. I have to try it! Also, today was the first day of my second semester of ceramics and there are about 15 people in ceramics 1 and 4 in ceramics two and we all really appreciate you Jon. Thank you!
"I really should start writing things down" the call that echo's round many studios, mine included. Serendipity is a lovely thing unless you need another copy. xx
Very cool! I love that big pot! Just seems like so much work for something we put a plant in but just the fact that we can just make whatever we want to is so rad!! And freeing! Just can’t love pottery more!
As always, I enjoy your videos, I am at the point of glazing some of my very first stuff, love your northern lights, so neat looking, and now you are putting an red under glaze, nice, you always come up with assume ideas,
The white glass coasters with the underlays remind me of Petri dishes in a cool way, you could market them to science "geeks", lol! Love your stuff, keep up the great work!
Great flower pot, EC must be well pleased. What about trying the red glaze on first just on the top part, then the black in your usual way, I might make it less prominent and blend in. I like a bit of red so long as it's subtle. Great stuff though Jon. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Nice video! I enjoyed the close-up view. My son and I were watching together and I was like “he is gonna get glaze all over those nice clean clothes!” And I was right. 😂😂 Should I send you an apron? 😝 That Northern Lights glaze is still my fav, so beautiful! Can’t say I love the red as much, but heck, tons of people in the comments seem to, so give the people what they want! Love your videos. Thanks for making pottery vlogs my 9 year old thinks are cool enough to watch together. 😎
A paint pot on top of a wire drain rack set the sprayer heavy and spray it . It’s what I’d do. Set that wire rack over your glaze buckets and let it drain back in there. Use a low air pressure though so it would run off well
Haha you are funny I love your video I learn alot from you I love your pots the colors on pots keep going 👍 I have Question can you brush the pots with glaze thanks oh my goodness you wearing exactly what Im wearing jeans and jersey shirt so Bizarre 😊
Sansevieria is my favorite genus of houseplant! I currently have about 12 species of them. That looks like a Sansevieria trifasciata. Neglect the crap out of it, most people kill them by changing their pots too often and over watering. It looks so squee in there! I wish I could post a photo of mine in my massive coil pot I made in school. Nifty!
if you empty your cold coffee from your cup and/or put a tablespoon or two of dead coffee grounds in your "mother's tongue" plant (start gradually, then increase as desired), it will develop some very beautiful red's and varying tones of yellow that will look so awesome with that planter.
On accomplishing little mundane tasks, you could try training your brain into liking the satisfaction of getting them done. You could do that by simple ways like making a nice list and tikking tasks off, or rewarding yourself when you get them done with like 10 more minutes wake boarding that afternoon, or a little chocolate or other snack ;) I've found that helpful Any way I really enjoy watching your videos, specially Kiln openings! Take care :)
Nice!!! I agree that the red in some of those pieces is a little too overpowering??? Keep testing though. Maybe if it is not the top layer of glaze??? I'm just starting out learning and doing ceramics. Your videos inspire me. My next piece is going to be multi color glazed layers. It comes out so cool! Thank you!
Hey! I really enjoy all your videos. I'm new to pottery, but I love it so much and would love to sell one day. I was wondering if you could do a video on how you approach filling a kiln and how to set it up to fire and the firing process. I was also curious on if you're using under glazes or normal low fire glazes?
What glaze is that red? The big flower pot is just beautiful lovely work. I like the clothes up better you're right that's little bit more intimate plus it's easier to see everything. Thank you
I have been waiting for you to fire the big pot. Fantastic! I looked back at the video when you threw the pot in sections which was actually a great idea for those of us that cant handle 15 pounds of clay at one time. I’ve watch Joel Cherrico work as well and he has some great glaze combinations. Lisa Orr, an Art of the Pot Tour in Austin Texas uses a red underglaze and colored engobes to get vibrant color combinations on low fired pottery. .I really like the red accents. It was interesting how it ran down in just some areas. Did you put on as an underglaze totally underneath your accent glazes cause it just peeked out so randomly like it was added last on the pot? Might like the red on the black coaster if it was totally in the center and not jut a dab. I really like the way you experiment with different combinations. It’s like Christmas when you open the kiln. I agree the green was lacking but then it might look different if it was totally in the center surrounded by black instead of white. As always it comes down to personal preference. Great video! Again!
I tried to break up some glass and put it in the bottom of some pots i made. It did not melt completely? What temp or cone do you fire your glaze loads to?
the big one looks great. I want to start doing dipping but I like to many colors. How did you come up with just a hand full? if I buy all the ones l want my wife would kill me..
Hey I love your videos! I saw one and you said you’re in Denver. My husband and I are in Pueblo, where do you buy your clay and glaze from? We are looking for a good local place with good prices and nice people.
Hi John Thanks for all your videos. I wonder why is there always snow and ice on your videos, where do you live? I live in Denmark and we almost never have snow. I am a beginner and take advantage of your videos (performance) Kind regards Erno Larsen
Flower pot looks great, I really like the glaze combination that you use! Couple of questions, who’s the manufacturer of the glazes that you are using, and I assume your using and firing to cone 6?
How do ya get the glaze todrip? Is it the layers upon layers or it a specific glaze with maybe more clay in it? You mentioned your buttercream helps the drips?
anna hall It’s really not advisable. Pieces with glass are not considered food safe because of the crackling effect. Those tiny cracks can harbor bacteria that washing won’t remove. In addition, there’s a risk that, over time, with washing and temperature changes, small pieces of the glass can fall out. You don’t want to swallow that.
I wondered the same thing... In general plants do better when the inside is porous, so not glazed. There is less chance of root rot. Snake plants are pretty tolerant though, so hopefully it did ok! Lovely pot :-)
in the first part of the video, after you glazed the flower pot, as you showed it to the camera there were lots of large drips and globs (for lack of a better word ;) ) did you fire it like that? or did you smooth them out. Thanks for the great videos! signed, "a novice wanting to get better"
Have you watched "How To Cook With Rory?"--he's on right now on TPT--Sat morning. I notice the pottery in his kitchen, and wonder whether he might make his own pottery? I'm not a potter, but I like that short light blue pitcher he uses. Just wondering about your opinions? Thank you--it also reminded me to catch up on your videos!
@@jennycaldwell1 ...hmmmm I was taught differently at the studio I belong to. They are pretty strict with the glove wearing for our safety... liquid chemicals can penetrate the skin in 20 seconds (esp. dry skin). Just concerned... still enjoy your videos. 😉
I’m not sure what I enjoy more, your pots/glazing or your energy in the videos.
Likewise! Love the energy and excitement.
My too, I love Jon's energy😇💐
Set the pot on two sticks across the top of the glaze bucket. Pour over. Drips back into bucket. Saves the guns. Awesome flower pot!
I tried pottery once and I found it sooooo difficult! You make it look like child's play. I love how you present your videos, you're hilarious and all the while throwing huge 15 lb flower pots, I'm impressed 👏
That planter came out beautiful Jon. Great job.
thanks for this one!! I'm going to be glazing a water crock / 5gallon water dispenser soon and had no clue how I would go about it ... Appreciate this!
Wow the pot turned out nice, good job. I like the northern lights glaze with the red pooling down, good contrast I think. Looks like it all turned out good.
Jon, really like the red addition. Gives the pieces a little punch. The big vase looks great.🤓
The red and black together was stunning.
I've been holding back on Pottery for a while now and every time I watch your videos excited about clay again I've never made a flower pot I hope soon when I get a new wheel I'll try to make a flower pot
I’m loving the red, it makes the piece POP. And the large planter? I can only say 😍💕💕💕❤️ Thanks again Jon. 🇬🇧
I love your Northern Lights!

Yes. We do like the red! Ooo with green! Love your videos! Keep em coming? 👍
I really enjoy kiln openings :-) The flower pot came out great and your guns looked good too. lol
Beautiful.....like the touch of red...the turquoise is the best....love the candle stuf coming up. Good luck
Amazing colours 👍
Absolutely beautiful planter. I kept envisioning a large mug handle on the side.... with a giant Minnesota...and evergreens... :))))
OMG love that movie - so funny never thought of that - loving that pot!
Fun kiln opening of crazy stuff, the red on black is great!
Loving it alll!! The hints of red are a great contrast w NL
Very cool! I love that big pot! Just seems like so much work for something we put a plant in but just the fact that we can just make whatever we want to is so rad!! And freeing! Just can’t love pottery more!
Try using a shallow round plastic dish pan to dip the rim in on your larger pots. I’ve really enjoyed your videos.
Hi Jon, great video as usual. I use a glazing wok for glazing larger items. 👏😇💐
The green coaster looks like moss! You should keep experimenting with it!
So pretty!! Love the northern lights.
I think the red looks awesome. It's my favorite color.
Lovely stuff!! Thanks for a few really good laughs, you’re a joy! Clean when you move... don’t wanna be redundant when it comes to cleaning!

And yeah your pots... Gorgeous!! ⚱⚱⚱
i love the red! i love all the colors but some new bright colors are fun
Beautiful pot!!
Another awesome video Jon love the monster pot!!
I just love your personality!

물론 작품도 환상적으로 아름답고 창조적이구요
Love the red! Really adds a nice pop and wow factor.
I like the red...maybe more so because it runs to the bottom. Liking the candle holder with the glass in the bottom. Nice work.
Love that green

Loved the candle holders and the plant pot! I think the red and black was gorgeous, but didn't like it added to the northern lights layering.
nice work!!

I love the glaze on your pot is beautiful, what glaze is it?
That red is so cool. Looks like a lava/magma valvano with northern lights
Nice video as always 👌
Maybe you could try using a cooling rack for cooking to put big pots on? Then you could have a pan or something under it to catch the drips.
The dirty dish is beautiful!

any butter cream alternatives in mayco?
Pottery and a gun show. Who said Saturday nights in lockdown wasn’t exciting. 😂
Can you put cone 6 glaze on cone 06 clay?
How to create that dripping effect?
What if you apply glaze on it by brush or by spray gun? Its easy and worked perfectly to.
Your pots are so beautiful i wish i would be able to buy them 😔🥺
How do you vent your kiln?
I tried to break up some glass and put it in the bottom of some pots i made. It did not melt completely? What temp or cone do you fire your glaze loads to?
how does it drip?
The pot is beautiful! But isn't it a little small for that stand? What percentage was the shrinkage rate on that?
the big one looks great. I want to start doing dipping but I like to many colors. How did you come up with just a hand full? if I buy all the ones l want my wife would kill me..
Just tested a few and stuck with the ones I liked! I dont really know....

How many pounds of clay did you use for the giant pot??
What # do you fire it at
How do you make your "runny" lazes run?
Jon I like your messy studio! xD
Flower pot looks great, I really like the glaze combination that you use! Couple of questions, who’s the manufacturer of the glazes that you are using, and I assume your using and firing to cone 6?
that's a very cool pot.....but i don't see a drain hole in the bottom. beautiful colors
How do ya get the glaze todrip? Is it the layers upon layers or it a specific glaze with maybe more clay in it? You mentioned your buttercream helps the drips?
So, process question: you're applying the underglaze over the unfired glaze-coated pot?
could u make mugs with the glass coaster effect in the bottom of them? im just wondering & interested in whether it would work
anna hall It’s really not advisable. Pieces with glass are not considered food safe because of the crackling effect. Those tiny cracks can harbor bacteria that washing won’t remove. In addition, there’s a risk that, over time, with washing and temperature changes, small pieces of the glass can fall out. You don’t want to swallow that.
Yes the glass should stay far away from anything that would be used for drinking or eating.
Turned out great! -jessi I
A wider container for glazing would be my only suggestion?
I think the red is not bad. May a little less and it will do perfectly what you hoped for. Happy to see more red-experimental stuff 🙃
Why do you glaze it that way? Can't you use an airless spray gun?
Love the northern lights glaze! Is that your own recipe or is it commercially available? The big pot come out beautiful!
That is my own combo !
You should try a spray bottle on mist with glaze to see what happens. Just a light spray for dots or "Stars". 👍
I can feel and breathe the dust in that studio.
Why do you have to glaze it on the inside if you’re gonna put soil in it? Also should you have added like a drainage? Just wondering 🤔
I asked my wife that but for this particular plant it does not need drainage!
I wondered the same thing... In general plants do better when the inside is porous, so not glazed. There is less chance of root rot. Snake plants are pretty tolerant though, so hopefully it did ok! Lovely pot :-)
Love the red accents.
I can't believe your white clothes.😂
I have a question...
it is a better effect with black or it's the same with other colors?
in the first part of the video, after you glazed the flower pot, as you showed it to the camera there were lots of large drips and globs (for lack of a better word ;) ) did you fire it like that? or did you smooth them out. Thanks for the great videos! signed, "a novice wanting to get better"
Drips and Globs of glaze really melt together and actually cause the cool dripping action so yes I left them there!
Where did you buy your glazes?
Continental clay in MN
What kind of clay do you use Jon?
Buff Stoneware!
Have you watched "How To Cook With Rory?"--he's on right now on TPT--Sat morning. I notice the pottery in his kitchen, and wonder whether he might make his own pottery? I have never seen it!!
Love you videos.... BUT, have to ask WHY NO GLOVES for glazing???
Glaze washes off really easily. It’s only dangerous in powder form, if you breathe it in. Wet, no problem.
@@jennycaldwell1 ...hmmmm I was taught differently at the studio I belong to. They are pretty strict with the glove wearing for our safety... liquid chemicals can penetrate the skin in 20 seconds (esp. dry skin).

I was also taught that gloves are not important but have seen other potters that insist that they are important, so I may start using gloves!
