Hello, love your channel. I froze all my apple peels from my apple pie filling recipe I did in June. I decided to try your recipe for the pancake syrup. Awesome Sauce!! came out awesome, 12 pints, the only thing I did different I added 2 cinnamon sticks and I added some ultra jell to thicken the syrup. I used only 5 cups sugar, it was sweet enough. the end product was unbelievable. Will use them for gifts together with your pancake mix. I'm very happy with the outcome of this syrup and its taste. This is a keeper. Blessings, Laura M
I would switch it out and add some tea bags around the syrup jars with a note on how to make thicker pancake syrup that way you get those of us who may not think of using the syrup to do double duty - I have a steamer juicer (bought the cheapest one $60) as I make alot of crabapple and rhubarb jelly and juice to drink. It breaks down the fruit without you having to strain it. I convert the fruit to juice then freeze it until I am ready to make the jelly. Your video is so great, it shows all steps and it was nice to hear the "pings"
This is beautiful!!!! I freeze my peelings and fruit scraps too. For jams and jellies and syrups and for making juice!.... the possibilities are endless! Waste not want not! ❤️
Always used them for feeding chx and pigs. Don't have those this season in life. So, been tossing those and feeling bad about it. I know there's nutrition in there and I don't like them going to waste. That's a lot of nutrition and money hitting the landfill. So glad so thankful I came upon this vlog. Glad I read your message. Aside from apple and pear what other ones do you use?
I just did this with my apple scraps! I’ve got half a gallon of juice in the freezer to process later. I was gifted boxes and boxes of apples. I made 19 pints of apple butter, dehydrated 7 quarts of apple slices and then the half gallon of juice from scraps to make apple jelly later.
That would be awesome to pour over ham or pork roast while it’s baking. Also, add some peppers for heat and jelly it. Awesome flavor combos! For nothing! Amazing. 👏🏻💕🇺🇸
I make my crab apples jelly the same way except that i boil it 35 to 40 minutes and i do the spoon in the deep freeze ,no pectine. Its just so good at breskfest time with boil eggs....you have very good recepies love that i found you two days ago...:)
As you mention thickening on the stove top before using I was thinking you can add some cinnamon and spices and top off with some toasted or praline pecans when serving.
I love this recipe I made it with just apples and it was a huge hit, tonight I am making it with apple and pears and I have twice as much as you had when you started so I am excited about what I am going to get out of it! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much. I did this once years ago by accident when attempting to make jelly with scraps and we loved the syrup. I have several gallon bags of Asian pear scraps, getting ready to make this on purpose and I’m glad I found your recipe.
yesterday evening around 7pm I peeled a bunch of pears (from my trees), washed, chopped them up into smallish pieces (peel and core too), put them in my crockpot and turned it on the keep warm setting with about 3 cups of water. This morning I turned the crockpot on high for a few hours then lowered to the low setting . I just got finished making the syrup, tasted it and love it!!! Will absolutely be making more in a few days. I cooked them on low because I had a million other things to get done and just couldnt get to it sooner. But it turned out to be a good thing I guess because the syrup is fantastic.
I made another batch of this today. This time I done it a little different. I put the pears in my blender and pretty much pureed them. Then put in crockpot for a few hours on low (did not add water). I did not have cheese cloth, so I used flour sack material that I got from Sams Club (worked great). Poured the juice into a large stock pot. I decided to add 1/4 cup clear Jell (didnt want to use to much) to see if it would thicken the syrup up a bit more, and it did. It taste the same as the first batch but a bit thicker. I will be doing it this way again next yr.
After letting this syrup sit for a few wks. That that I put the clear jell in got to thick. I will not do that again. When I made the second batch I also made a few jars without the jell, that syrup was just right in consistency but was a bit to tart (next year I will try adding a bit more sugar).
i absolutely just love this idea . my mother in law does whole fruits such as plums, grapes, pears ,apples and what ever else she has including dried fruits n prunes.she does not drain it . she calls it "compute". she also uses little sugar , it gets thickish from all the fruits staying in there they serve it cold in a wine glass with a little of the boiled fruit in the bottom for there orthodox christmas , which is on january 7th . its traditional . she yells at me cuz i make it for when ever i have a taste for it . you might want to try it its wonderful. i use to make it for my son as a baby but i did strain it for him and called it fruit juice . it's really different n fun to have 2 christmas's , 2 new years and 2 easters ! i am not a good canner !!! tried to make lemon lime orange marmalade once last year. followed the recipe to the tee , now i to have tons of citrus syrup i use in our teas and stuff. but that was a happy mistake and we love it . im so doing this , i bet it will not be like yours i will probably screw it up . GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO. you are a great teacher like noreen n bev n linda v !!! ty for sharing this heather . hugs n xx
I'm collecting scraps nicely now! Got an Apple Slinky-corer-slicer for my birthday and I've already got a good collection going in the freezer!!! Great video Heather. 🍎🍏
The smell, the color, the fhriftyness, the flavor, quality..... the feeling of accomplishment...can't compare to buying it at the store....though truth be told unless you go to a speciality shop you won't find it.
no one could have said it better! :D i am thinking this might be perfect to pop open, and pour into a pretty bottle, and keep at the bar or beverage table during the holidays. Every good cocktail needs a simple syrup.... and whats better than an apple pear simple syrup without any additives? hahaha
@@TheKneadyHomesteader oh yeah, in the making of it add apple pie spice blend and then pack it in that special bottle you're talking for the coffee bar. A nice apple pie ala mode coffee. Use it to flavour the coffee then top the coffee with steamed milk. Beautiful autumn treat.
Thanks Heather. I pulled out all my peel and started this tonight as here in Ontario Canada it is still cool. with kitchen window open it was perfect. Made casserole, 2 apple crisps, carmel sauce a day this apple syrup.yum! Thank you!
I bet if you added a bit of brandy or vanilla rum to this Gorgeous syrup and heat a small glass of it up..you would have a homemade hot toddy. Beautiful and now my second freezer is going to hold all my peelings and cores! Whst a wonderful way to use up every bit of fruit!💜💜💜
You've given me a great idea. This fall I used my peels and cores to make homemade Apple Cider Vinegar, which takes about 6-8 weeks to process. Still in the middle of the process. Good job girl! Love love love your videos. Next time, I'll save my peels and cores and be sure to make this. I save my scrap veggies to make stock. Have a great Christmas - Alison.
OH now THAT would be a great thing to make.... vinegar! :D i think i am going to try it as a replacement to corn syrup when i make my maple pancake syrup next! When I do I will record it and we can see together if it works out! hahaha and thanks for watchin', Mama! :D
I had enough peels saved to make this today!! I did want to make a jelly, but I added too little pectin, which is a shame. I did get some thick runny honey like substance though, which tastes pretty good. I'm going to use it in my porridge and on pancakes. No more golden syrup for me :-).
A quicker way would be to just add straight up apple juice and and cook it into a concentrated mix then add sugar. Like you said about cooking longer you dilute it it also makes it sweeter. This method is also good for using scraps great video
I love your videos I love making my own syrups it's so fun and tasty and learning more from watching your wonderful videos when I make my syrup I place spoons in my freezer and boil till the syrup coats the spoon and slides off slowly
That looks amazing. Are you definitely videoing your pancake mix recipe? I would love to try it. I get so many good recipes from you. God bless and thank you! 👏🏻🌻👏🏻
After boiling the fruit down after the first process I will give to my chickens and pigs as they eat stuff like that. Chickens can not tell the difference between sweet hot or any flavor. Thank you Heather. Your amazing. Thanks to your friend.
+The Kneady Homesteader Wouldn't it be easier and more flavorful and more of an extraction just to throw everything in a crockpot and leave it overnight or even 24 hours then strain? Can reuse easy after rising and they are a lot of the time even more effective than say cheesecloth for getting the small particles and can get a really good grip on it. Can just cut however big or small you want. Also paint strainer bags from a hardware store work great too instead of jelly bags and can be bigger also are cheap.
