Robin's voice is sheer magic, and of course the brothers' harmonies are perfect. It feels like having them performing in one's own living room.

The Bee Gees were still making great music and in demand for live shows, touring, etc. until Maurice died unexpectedly in Jan. 2003, after complications from a twisted intestine. He suffered a cardiac arrest. The death ended the Bee Gees. Robin and Barry pursued other projects and did solo work, but they laid their brother and the band to rest.

Most of their early international hits were lead by Robin solo, Robin and Barry singing unison, or Robin and Barry trading off lead vocal during the song. For singles released in 1967 and 1968, 7 out of 9 were US top 20 and 5 out of 9 were UK top 20. 5 of those hits were song ideas from Robin that the 3 of them fleshed out together. Two of those songs were UK #1 singles. In the 1960's Robin's strength was emotional ballads, and that style sold well at that time. When musical tastes started to change in the 1970s it took the Bee Gees a couple of albums to find their new sound, more funk and R&B oriented which was better suited to Barry's voice. All 3 could sing falsetto very well, however Barry preferred to sing it as a lead voice and wrote songs between 1976 to 1981 more suited to a falsetto lead. The "disco" sound was a very small period of time in their career but since it was so successful it is what they are remembered and reviled for. They recorded and toured almost non-stop from 1967-1969 and drew huge crowds of screaming fans similar to the Beatles in their heyday. Their 1960's success was not considered nominal at that time. They were huge even back then. They just had a career lull from 1971 to 1975. The Main Course album which had "Nights on Broadway", "Fanny Be Tender", and "Jive Talking" was their comeback album.

Robin sang lead on a lot of their early music. Who would sing lead was at the root of their break-up. I would also argue that their music spanned 5 not 4 decades. "This Is Where I Came In" was released in 2001, Maurice died in 2003 so they were still doing their thing through the 60s, 70s, 80s 90s and into 2000; that's not including solo projects by Barry and Robin after Maurice died.

Who would sing lead? Barry often explained this. If Robin came with an idea, like Massachusetts, I've got to get a message to you, i started a joke, then he would sing the song and they would naturally distribute the harmonies according to who suited better. They always wrote the music first then fit the lyrics in. There is a video bouncing around on YT about the making of Tragedy. Definitely worthwhile

My favorite live performance of Massachusetts is the one called "Live For All Tour 1989". It's great!! Another fantastic Robin song is the live version of "I Can't See Nobody" (Live @ Melbourne 1974) with Robin singing lead. And in case you hadn't learned yet, all three brothers could sing falsetto. Barry was usually the main falsetto they featured, but both Robin and Mo could sing falsetto and often did, and all three sang falsetto in harmony sometimes (such as in Too Much Heaven). Anyway, they really were prominent over 4 decades as you know--1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Unbelievable! And I love how cute they look as kids in the younger videos here on You Tube. You should check them out. and you're right, a 40+ year career is unheard of. Legend is the right word. Legend and genius. And check it out, Michael Jackson thought Barry was the best falsetto he ever heard, and used to visit Barry for coaching on occasion. Barry was the primary lead for the Bee Gees, but Robin also sang lead quite frequently, and Mo once in a while. And in some songs I'm sure you've noticed that they switch back and forth during the song between Barry and Robin (such as in "Alone"). Thanks for sharing your wonderful journey with us!

First verse it's Robin alone, also on the lines after the chorusses, second and third verse he sings in unision with Barry, who lil dominates the chorusses, where he comes in very powerful. Maurice fullfilling it for harmonies on chorusses. Barry and Robin were sharing leadvocals very often. To talk about the sixties, on singles by 50/50, on albums lil more Barry-leads. If you want, I can send you a list, so I'm owning every Bee Gees Single/LP/CD/DVD.

Drew....."(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and released in 1967.[3] Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during both Bee Gees concerts and his solo appearances. It later appeared on their 1968 album, Horizontal.
The song became the first of the group's five No. 1 hits in the UK Singles Chart, reached No. 1 in twelve other countries, peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually sold over five million copies worldwide.[2][4] When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts.[3] In a UK television special on ITV in December 2011, it was voted third (behind "How Deep Is Your Love" and "You Win Again") in "The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song".[5]............The song was originally intended for The Seekers. Upon arriving in London from Australia (following in the path of the Seekers, who had arrived several years earlier) the Bee Gees had been unsuccessful in getting the song to the group, so they recorded it themselves. During a chance meeting in London between the Seekers' lead singer Judith Durham and Maurice Gibb, Durham learned that "Massachusetts" was originally intended for her group and in 2003 the Seekers recorded the song as a tribute to Maurice following his death earlier that year.
The Bee Gees had never actually been to Massachusetts when they recorded the song; they just liked the sound of the name as it was unusual, containing a lot of S's.[8]

A 5+ decade career!! Their last album was This Is Where I Came In, released in 2001. Try Deja Vu from that album, another Robin lead :-) Massachusetts is their answer to the 60s flower-power period when everyone was leaving home. I think they said whoever had the idea or whoever's voice fit best, sang lead. Just In Case was Barry's idea but Robin sang lead. That would be a great reaction...Making of Just In Case 😀

For Whom the bell tolls. Massachusetts is Robin's song along with I started a joke. They were still teenagers in that picture you were looking at. They were still writing and performing up until Maurice's death in 2003. They also wrote number 1 hits for other artists. The BeeGees started out at 9 and 6 here in Australia. There are film clips on UA-cam as them as children. Barry and Robin shared the lead after Robin rejoined the group in 1970. Whoever came up with the idea of the song ususally took lead except Mo. He usually stayed back on harmonies until the late 90s. He did however have a lot of music he did solo as did the other two. I think he felt after the group broke up for a couple of years in the late 60s because of the rivalry between Barry and Robin when they regrouped he didn't want to rock the boat. As usual Mo the peacemaker. Barry and Robin both admitted it was Mo that kept them all together.

They were ALL teenagers in that photo, Robin and Mo @14 or 15 and Barry @17 or 18. Early on in the 60's Robin and Barry shared leads @50%. A lot of their early stuff was ballads and that was Robin's forte. The story of writing this song varies. In one bio Barry said Robin came to him and sang the melody and his mouth dropped open. He loved it. Maurice didn't like it. Then all three finished writing the song. You can always tell Robin's voice because he was the only brother with the natural vibrato, that quavering sound that is a very rapid variation in pitch. It was his trademark. This was their first #1 in the UK. Robin credited it with saving his life. He was in a train wreck at 17 that killed over 50 and he was a hero who helped pull out mangled victims both dead and alive. Because it was a #1 he was able to afford 1st class tickets and the people who died were in 2nd class although a rail crashed through his window and missed taking off his head by inches. They had a career from the late 50's until 2003 when Mo died, 6 decades.

Robin was my favorite voice, I saw them in the early 70's just before the disco years, The Mr Natural tour, and listened to them all through their career. They loved The Mills brothers (look them up) Everly brothers, they were harmonizing together the twins were 6 and Barry was 9.

They determined who would sing lead in different ways. Sometimes whoever came up with the idea of a song, or who’s voice was better suited to the song. In the 70’s when Barry discovered his falsetto they wrote songs for his falsetto although all three could sing in falsetto as you could tell from Too much heaven, Barry was able to sing whole songs while Robin and Maurice couldn’t. Sometimes Barry and Robin shared lead, and sounded like one voice even though they were both singing at the same time. Actually their career lasted 5 decades because they started professionally 1958-2003 when Maurice passed away. If could react to a very beautiful song from the 70’s called LOVE YOU INSIDE OUT, thanks

Robin couldn’t sing a song all the way through? Huh? He did so many, many times and brilliantly. Whether Barry liked Robin to sing songs all the way through is another matter and probably more to the point but he most certainly could.

@@beeharbour Robin has a very beautiful voice and he can certainly sing a song all the way through and he has proven many times. Singing a whole song in falsetto all the way through is another matter. Barry and Robin after their breakup in 1969 said that they came to compromise as who would take the lead. In interviews they said that no one was leader, they took lead according to who was better suited to that song, so no Barry did not decide if Robin could take lead.

    • @beeharbour
      @beeharbour Рік тому +2

I wonder why Barry recently said, in a moment of reflection, “I should have let him (Robin) sing more leads.” I wonder why third party biographers report that Barry took leads in songs that Robin primarily wrote. There is nothing terribly challenging about singing a song all the way through in falsetto. If you have a falsetto, and Robin did, you can sing it til the cows come home.

@@beeharbour I’ve also read several biographies about The Bee Gees, particularly by David Mayer that was total hogwash. I bought the book without reading the reviews until I started reading it and saw how he demeaned The Bee Gees and particularly hated Barry. There are other biographies that are not particularly accurate, that are based on third hand information. I I’ve watched hundreds of interviews were Robin himself has said that all three were equal in their decisions. It’s up to you if you want to make Barry the bad guy. I don’t believe it because I have not seen any proof. They loved and respected each other and it shows in their interviews and especially in their authorized biography by Barry, Robin, and Maurice as told to David Leaf. Please let me know what song Robin sang all in falsetto, I’m willing to be convinced.

You are so right...relevance through 4.5 decades is NOT normal. They are so special!!❤❤❤ Whoever had the idea of the song, the lead would be sung by the initial creator & then the song would be fleshed out by all three working on the lyrics & music. So Robin took the lead more in the 60s, but Spirits Have Flown was mostly Barry in the lead I believe. To hear Maurice in the lead (sometimes on solo albums, sometimes with his brothers) please listen to Wildflower, Railroad, Lay it On Me, and Man in the Middle. You will not regret it! I Love Maurice's lower range voice.❤❤❤ Great reaction!!
