Amanita Muscaria is the variety you seek. I believe it's endemic to siberia. It's also poisonous, so probably not a great idea to eat them. If you wanna feel 10 feet tall, you're probably better off just wearing somebody else's glasses.
Right! They’re mysterious. I was the same - until I came to Japan! It’s just such an important ingredient in cuisine here that it’s good to know them and they’re super healthy!
@@anand.raveendran oh wow! I hope people come to watch 🙏 that’s why creators create. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll work hard to get the word out myself.
Mom and I loved this!! She was telling me about how she would go looking for mushrooms when she lived in Minakami. She would go to the mountains near Fujiwara in the fall and pick mushrooms with her friend who ran Minakami onsen. Thank you so much for your episodes! We both miss Japan and are hoping to make one more trip if she stays healthy enough to travel....she will be mid 80's ❤
At university when I was an undergrad, our prof said to collect mushrooms in a mesh bag or something similar so the spores can be distributed whilst trudging through the woods. This was fascinating, John!
Hey John, I appreciate you making a video on mushrooms. Mushroom cultivation and scavenging is definitely an interesting topic! Japan has a lot of the "best" edible mushrooms the world has to offer.
The sheer variety of mushrooms is amazing! So many ways to enjoy their flavor. You really had to trailblaze to get to those coveted spots. Well shot and paced. Really enjoyed this John! 👍🍄
Love how gracious the JRstaff were at the end. I guarantee that if Mushroom Stand had all those varieties, they’d have to change their name to “Mushroom Kingdom”. No Bowsers welcomed! 🤣🤣🤣
The JR Staff was so kind and helpful. They spoke English too - a big change from 20 years ago when I first came here. HAHA! When I see the CEO again, I will mention it - I'd like to try more mushrooms there. He gave us some soup to take home which Kanae loved!
ONLY in JAPAN * John Daub That’s a guarantee of more future business in my book. Just wish I wasn’t allergic to mushrooms. But the sound when they were in the fryer...that was a beautiful sound.
I love this new show! I want some Japanese mushrooms now!! Thank you for showing us all the work that goes into these perfect bites of pleasure from Japan!
Arh, that's better! I was at the old channel, thinking where's John??? I hope you can grow "your" channel, and thank you for the Japan insights. I lived in Osaka for 3 years. Possibly the most interesting 3 years of my live. Good luck mate!!
I really like these special videos, they help deepen my appreciation and understanding of Japan. I used to accompany my grandparents when they would collect wild pine mushrooms.
very cool idea for a video! as mushroom enthusiast I am glad you enjoy them as well and bring light to the subject! never tried many of these japanese ones!
As always, thank you for such an informative video. you can learn from your videos things you cannot find anywhere else about in japan!! thanks again John!
John you rock dude! I remember suggesting something like this a while ago and almost forgot, but not you! You went and made an amazing informative and relaxing video. Always well researched, always high quality content. Thank you.
I really enjoy your farm to table series John! I’m So glad you’ve continued it. I know food videos always do well, but it’s super important that we understand we everything comes from. I didn’t know there were so many varieties of mushrooms either in Japan, no wonder they’re so relevant in some of the video games lol. I really love portabella mushrooms as slices on top of a burger or stuffed and baked on an oven. They’re a bit expensive though! I’m so excited to see more food and farm stuff!
So happy to see new videos from you! I like the new animation at the beginning. You make me wanna be in Japan in every video I watch of yours. I love how informative they are and I can just feel the enthusiasm and joy you have for what you do. Thank you so much! Peace&Love&Light ☮☯️🕉

Fascinating video, John! It was nice to follow the mushrooms from the ground/farm to the market to consumption. From someone like me who does not usually like mushrooms, even I would find it tempting to try the assortment of freshly picked mushrooms shown here.
What a great vid, you are so sweet with the Japanese people. I admire you for the quality of your work trough out the years. More of these infotanement vids rather than the 'all you can eat' ones please. ☺️ Well done John!! ✨
Wow! Love this farm to table video on mushrooms in Japan. I have always been fascinated with foraging in Japan. particularly all the mushroom varietals. There are so many in Japan. We need to see more videos like this John @ONLY in JAPAN * John Daub
Nice video John! I'm no vegetarian, but I'd love too see more videos that present meat-free food. When it comes to Japan, there are tons of meat-free OKAZU, so dishes that you add to rice. For example Tsukemono which are probably the most traditional food that you can find in Japan!
I hope you take this the right way, but this video has a very comforting unpretentious NHK feel to it. Great job, John. You are a super-relatable UA-camr with a hardcore 'blue collar' work ethic it seems. Can't wait for the next notification. All the best. Stay safe.
I have been a NHK World reporter since 2008 for a few shows. I like to think I push the ball forward though. I want people to sit back and enjoy, learn something and feel like they've been on an adventure. Make Japan approachable and fun.
@@onlyinjapan I think the best way in which you do that is by virtue of your personality coming through. Indeed, an NHK Vibe might be there, but it's totally your own unique approach to such a presentation. I'd sooner watch something you produced than anything similar on NHK.
