  • The Mahindra Roxor is one unique vehicle with its Jeep CJ looks, steel frame, and 2.5L Turbo Diesel engine. Targeting a cross between UTV and Jeep enthusiasts for trails, farm work, or just all around fun, the Roxor unfortunately has a 45mph speed limit.
    VR Tuned will do an ECU flash on this Bosch EDC17C55 ECU to squeeze more power and get rid of that pesky speed limiter. Check it out!

    The funny thing is, this is EXACTLY what a lot of Jeep guys have been asking for. A cheap, stripped down Jeep that doesn't have a base sticker of $27,000... FCA instead moved in the opposite direction with the JL, making an even heavier, even softer, even more expensive Jeep..
    I'm a JK owner and I love my 2-door JK, but I really, really want one of these. Only problem is I'm in California and I'd have to see proof of others in California getting them street legal before I'd pull the trigger. I know there's the CJ vin plate trick, but that's a legal grey area at best.

      Where in CA are you? I split time between Tahoe (Truckee) & the Bay Area. The dealer in Reno has a few & I went & checked it out as a longtime Jeep owner. As a result, I will take a hard pass & it was very evident that this is a poor quality vehicle. Parts are flimsy & the steering wheel amd pedals are way too shoddy for a new vehicle. Can only imagine that this thing will be falling apart after a few thousand miles. Then try to get parts or service when they vanish from North America. I was really disappointed - will be getting a 2nd beater Jeep - probably a TJ.

      @@krasnaludek298 Mahindra is not leaving the USA anytime soon, they have been selling tractors here for 25 years now. They sell more tractors worldwide than any other brand. Even if they did leave the USA market, these days you can order anything you need and have it shipped to you. I think these are a good option for light work around the farm or ranch, and then you can dick around on some trails with it to boot. They are adding PTO. It's a Jeep for all practical purposes too, not a big 4 wheeler. A top, lockers, and a windshield and wipers, and that diesel torque plus a real transmission (not that CVT rubber band shit) beats any UTV I can think of. As for street legality and use, sure if you live in BFE and want to run down to the neighbors or to the little store for a six pack; I don't think I would want to commute in this, but I wouldn't want to commute in an old Willys either.

      I think if the EU quits being stupid about agricultural imports, they could start getting eligible for US importation. A lot of states have really low standards for removable top vehicles so these might need a few thousand on top of their $13k price to be road legal. They won't crash them as needed until they can sell them under $20k road legal though.

    • @slateslavens
      @slateslavens 6 років тому +6

      yeah. it's not 'smaller'. Pretty much every jeep from the MB/GPW to the CJ5 are smaller than the Roxor. They're also much cheaper and can be legally driven on any road. If the old flathead motor is too anemic for you, V6 swaps for Buicks and 4.3 Vortecs are pretty cheap and easy to do. If you must have a turbo diesel in one, the Kubota swap is also well documented and is still cheaper than the Roxor.
      The only part I'm interested in is whether the five speed tranny will drop into a CJ2A with a minimum of fuss.

      Even after replacing the frame, axles and driveline that's likely needed on the equivalent older CJs it's still cheaper of course. Obviously the big market they're aiming at now is Polaris and similar side-by-sides which are ludicrously expensive and would be likely to see these used off-road as fleet vehicles though they certainly seem to be targeting the distinct possibility of the chicken tax ending and selling these road-legal as low-end SUVs.

    In Montana (and some other states) even ATVs can be "street legal". Both of my Kawasaki Brute Force 750s are licensed for street use. all that is required is a tail light/brake light, hi/lo beam headlights, a horn, and a license plate light. Turn signals are not required. I have seen a Roxor on the street downtown, with a temporary licnese plate on it!

      G56AG Making it street legal in the US would make the vehicle more expensive. The same exact vehicle in India can top out around 75 mph but it becomes really hairy at that speed. The top variant with a smoother and more powerful 2.6L engine, Borg Warner transfer case, rear locking diffs, AC and front independent suspension hits almost 100 mph.

      william Dana they wouldn't sue each other, mahindra has no rights to the jeep name or franchise, it only had a license to make the car. It has no legal bounds to sue fiat, who bought the actual company, and now produces new vehicles under the jeep name. Mahindra just makes vehicles that look similar, but are they're own car. If you want to get really technical about it, Fiat could have a legal base to sue Mahindra, as they are producing cars that look suspiciously similar to the old cars they built under an expired license.

    The Roxor is made in Michigan, not India. Many of the parts are made in India however. While it’s based on the Thar, there are significant differences. Jeep trademarked it’s Jeep grill. As far as I know, the CJ body shape is neither patented, trademarked or copyrighted. I suspect FCA will not be able to successfully show it is being done harm by this vehicle. I think Mahindra will have a tougher time with the US government due to emissions compliance and safety standards due to the intent of many potential owners intending to operate them on public roads. Which by the way is a major point of this dyno test and tune. Mahindra specifically did not give this vehicle a VIN number nor turn signals to keep it in the side by side off-road category. I saw that this tune left a whole lot more performance on the table. They got the quarter mile into the 18’s and traps in the mid 70 mph range. That is as good or better than a stock CJ of just 45 years ago.

      NO ONE...NOT ONE PERSON.....would buy a new Wrangler for off road UTV type use. They cost too damn much for that. The idea that Jeep is being harmed by this vehicle is preposterous.

      Actually a lot of people go off-roading in $30k+ brand new Jeeps. I see them on trails quite a bit. A lot of people prefer new wranglers for hunting use too.

    • @GratefulRob
      @GratefulRob 6 років тому +3

      That's not what I said (or at least meant.) If someone is looking for a side by side UTV, they are looking in a certain price range. NO NEW JEEP falls into that category. This vehicle offers Jeep ability with a low price tag to the UTV market. Let Jeep build a CJ2 reissue for $15k and they would be in the running too.

    • @cleetismcdougall5425
      @cleetismcdougall5425 6 років тому

      @@GratefulRob Roxor's are $20k+, only about $4k less than a stripped down base model 2 door Wrangler.
      And the Jeep Renegade is about the same price. The trailhawk version is very capable and is street legal.
      People who buy these toys don't really care about a few thousand dollars. And yes it will steal some Jeep sales from FCA. FCA is suing Mahindra because they don't want them to get a toe hold in the market with their Jeep clone. If the Roxor does well enough Mahindra might build a street legal version in the future that would more directly compete.

    • @GratefulRob
      @GratefulRob 6 років тому

      Base Wrangler Sport STARTS at $28,200 and the ROXOR Starts justvunder $15,500.

      I think the 105bhp version is not this particular engine as used in the roxor. That must be the old Mahindra scorpio or Mahindra that engine also known as the NEF series engine. What the roxor has is I think the that di engine which was evolved from old international tractor engine and still used in commercial applications in mahindras lineup.
      The power ratings you have achieved are the same as the stock thar di and similar speeds achieved in India. The engine though is a real workhorse and lugs around 3000kgs in most commercial pickups here. Right kgs not pounds. No mistake there

    • @praveenp

      There are two engine variants in India. One gets exact same DI engine in roxor and generate exact same power and torque, but without speed limiting. Other gets a CRDe engine with above mentioned 105bhp and 240 NM torque. Most probably Thar DI's ECU alone won't increase the power.

    I like it. Smart, useful upgrade, but not to the extent that it’s going to turn the Roxor into a hand grenade. 70-odd mph sounds a little scary, given the pedestrian nature of the rest of the vehicle. This is not a performance side-by-side.
    Also, I suspect that further development would have the usual cascade effect, where the cost escalates as you end up replacing smoked clutches, melted wastegates, broken axles, inadequate brakes, etc.

You could put that $10,000 dollars on a Roxar, an have a off-road machine as good or better for less money than a "real" Jeep an have that retro look of a CJ.

    In order for this to be street legal in the US it would have to meet current EPA & DOT specs. which the cost would be prohibited. They are strictly for off road use. Long gone are the days when turn signals, back up lights & seat belts would conform to 1968 DOT regs.

    You maybe able to import and tune the CRDE engine from the thar (105HP/240nm) or the mHAWK engine from the scorpio (120-140hp/280-320nm) from scraped vehicles. But this m2dicr is a work horse and can take serious punishment.

    Is there a gas eng option? We got dw to -45F a few times this winter. We had several wks of -25F to -43F. Gas can be more dependable here in Alaska.

    This diesel 2.5 seem's alot like an international tractor or industrial motor with a turbo?.If that's the case it's a good one and will last a while.That electric fuel foot deal could be swapped out and a linkage installed .

    Remember when Jeeps were made by AMC, I think those were the best ones. I'm not buying Fiats these days.
