The Roxor is built in Detroit, MI, which is way more than you can say for many Jeep products today. The comments about the Mahindra being an "eBay CJ" or "knockoff" are hilarious and ignorant. Mahindra has been making Willys vehicles *under license* just 3 years after it was available to US civilians in 1945. Today they are a 15 billion $ company built mostly on the strength of one product, the Jeep CJ. So if Jeep is a legend, Mahindra is it's greatest living tribute. Go to India and see for yourself how these vehicles are used before passing judgment!
Jeeps have long been made in Toledo, Ohio, and most still are. That's where Willys-Overland was based, then American Motors took over... The Renegade is assembled in Italy, but the engine and transmission are made in the US.
Andrew Martin that's not the point I was making, but the Wrangler is the only Jeep product still built in Toledo (though not in the same plant as the original Willys). Renegade and Compass are both made outside the US and are Fiat platforms. The Grand Cherokee is a Mercedes platform but built in Detroit. The Cherokee probably has the most Jeep influence and built in Illinois, but it's still a part-Fiat. Meanwhile Mahindra has been building rugged body-on-frame SUVs and pickups true to the original Jeep heritage the entire time since the 50s, and a share of their profits have come back here to the US in licensing royalties. So this isn't some Chinese knockoff built to look like the real thing.
VK Really VK !!! The Mahindra GPs have been hauling Artillery and god knows what else the Indian Army makes it haul is because the company bribes the minister to buy their product !!! I am impressed at the level of your stupidity.
Ajay -- Why do you say that? Was anything I said not true? Other than I went off on a little tangent from SwiftX's original post, I didn't speak unkindly about Mahindra or the Roxor. I was thinking that there were two production lines in Toledo, the Wrangler and either the Compass or Cherokee, but I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong. My 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade was built in Toledo... I now own a 2017 Renegade Trailhawk, and I really like the Roxor, but I can't justify owning one, especially since it's not street legal. If I owned a large ranch or farm, I might get one... BTW, my dad was an engineer with Chrysler for 20 years, and my great-uncle worked for both Chrysler and AMC -- I am fairly familiar with the company heritage.
I think that Willys only has tires and a rattle can paint job and honestly the original military ag style tires probably would have done better in the mud. Plus the Roxor starts at 20gs, I could do plenty of mods to a Willys (not to mention saving it from rusting into nothing) that would make it shit all over a Roxor for 20g's. Plus the argument could be made over the Roxor being brand new and the Willys has probably seen well over 150,000 hard miles.
@@danthedude89 - I'm a huge Jeep fan and like you, I hate seeing a grand old Willys rusting into nothing. Personally, I think this is a BS comparison anyways as 1948 Willys are pretty hard to come by these days. Also, the Roxor is starting at 15k (saw my 1st truck load of them today in fact) so spending a grand on tires, and a poor mans lift (new shackles, which is what we did to all of the CJ's back in the day and they worked just fine) would make this thing just perfect. That turbo diesel is a huge plus. As is, I can easily see these used on large farms and cattle ranches as well as safari vehicles.
You're driving a vehicle with a roll cage and seatbelts... but wearing helmets... then you're in a 70 year-old open-top Willys with lap-belts (maybe?) and no helmet.... Not the brightest bulbs in the box.

The Roxor did well all things considered. The biggest advantage to it though I think is that it's brand new. That means no rusty tub, no hack job fixes, a solid frame, and a fresh engine. The thing with the Willy's is that even though it's been time proven, I'd hate to have to put my faith in rusty old shit that you never know what's going to happen. I'd hate to get out on the trail and have a water pump or god forbid an oil pump go out on a high mileage, high hour motor like that. Especially if you had to be by yourself. Overall though, I think that the Mahindra has a place in the market, especially considering it costs just as much as a new side x side anyways.

I've seen Mahindra's SUVs aging as 45 years old and they still do stuff like CJ2 or This Whillys Jeep... Mahindra has mastered the Science of making Rugged and Cheap SUVs over the years and now only makes SUV, Mini SUV, Crossover, Etc.. No Sedans or Hatch Back.. There are only 2 issues with all Mahindra cars.. 1. Under power 2. A lot of Body roll If you're living the States and want a real off-roader which you can actually take off-road without any fear of damaging the car like with a Land Rover or a fully equipped Wrangler for a very cheap price.. **Buy the goddamm Roxor** Plus you can customize it as your very own jeep!
That why we buy an old 80' 4x4 pick up, lift it and throw some mud terrain tires on it...cheaper than the mahindra and will out offroad it all day...'MERICA
Yeah and why are people still stuck on RTI ramp scores anyway? Come on people. RTI ramps have their uses, like observing suspension movement in a controlled environment, but to me they should have faded out in about 2003 when people realized that super flexy suspension got them no farther down the trail than normal leaf springs and locking diffs. I mean you saw how the ROXOR kept going with one wheel off the ground. The guy had to tell him to back up to take the measurement. Ramp scores don't always equate to real world wheelability.
It's a toy for people that don't know any different or for farmers thay want to tow a little with it around the farm. No where near practical as a wheeler. After needed upgrades, you'd be in it for 25-30k. For sticker proce, I could build a 1ton yj or TJ and have enough dough left to buy a single seater utv. Or look at it like a person that buys an Acura instead of just the Honda. Now they can say, look at me and how much I spent on a pointless nameplate.
Having seen some new ATV's in the similar class (such as side-by-sides) I can say it's priced pretty competitively against them, it's just that they're taking an Indian car and selling it as an ATV, so it isn't as "optimized" as say a Polaris side by side
Only because they were building other stuff to support the war effort. You are aware India was all in for the WW2 war effort, right? Mahindra started building these right after the war for a bunch of really good reasons.
I started to wonder why I still kept watching the video once I realized that it is just barely-old-enough-to-drive and totally inexperienced off-road drivers trying to compare those 4x4:s. It was starting to be almost painful until I tried to think them as my daughter and her bmw-friends. My son would do a lot better as he was trained to drive off road in the Finnish army. Anyway, thanks for the video , but please, try to find a dog collar that gives a 20000 volt shock if the one wearing it uses the words "send it"...
Those are not the OEM tires on Willys. The vehicles are not really "like for like". The CJ has after market tires and not the standard OEM but a huge tire.
If they had used 6.00 X 16 NDT tires they would have sailed right through that mud. The side bite on them is incredible in sand or mud and they clear themselves rather than mudding up.
There is no reason that the Mahindra should not be street legal when the Willys is. I wish we lived in a world where people could do their own research and choose to drive what they want. Want a safe car? Buy one! Want a barebones 4x4? Buy one! So sick of stupid government regulation. Governments don't work for the people. They ought to be abolished for their suppressive bullshit.
Had to stop watching part way through after seeing how yall were treating the Willys. It hasn't survived 70 years just to get crunched up by a few punk kids.
A little trail rash won't hurt that Willys. Far from trashing it. Besides it's yours to do with what you want. I suggest some mud tires and a front locker if you plan to keep going to that off road park. Get the feel of how it wheels and have some fun.
For the love of God, stop with the "Send it"s. You're not even using it right and you sound like one of those parents trying to say "lit" and "fam" to relate to kids.
I think if you took the Mahindra and took two of the next to the longest Leafs out of the leaf springs and had them arched you would have the ground clearance you need and it would be softer and you would get more articulation
It's cool to see some youngsters out 'wheelin' . The video took me back to my 'wheelin' days at that age (3 decades ago), with a beater 72 Power Wagon short box, 4 speed manual granny gear. Main difference is I didn't have a cutie to go muddin' with me :D To all the snide comments about the tires, he did reference the difference at the end of vid.
Mahindra started off building Jeeps under license in WW2 and they've been building them ever since. The elongated versions are used in rural India as people movers, where the roads that are worse than the tracks in this video, with very little maintenance or professional mechanics around. They are not fast vehicles but those things are built to take a beating.
just so you realize, because someone else said the same thing and i just copied the response: David Tracy 7 months ago I mentioned the difference in tire size in the video, for the record. Second, everyone in this video is from the country-nobody from the city, not that it's remotely relevant. Third, three of the folks in the video have driven some of the country's hardest off-road trails in Moab. And two of us I'd consider highly experienced, having spent many years beating on Jeeps off-road (we even did it for a living). Should my friend have hammered the skinny pedal a bit more on the way out of that one mud hole? Maybe. But that didn't affect the outcome of the test, and I'd suggest you read the full comparison linked in the description for an in-depth analysis of how the two vehicles compare off-road.
Dam yall drive like most of these girls, never looking much past the hood. Its much better to look down the trail with some kind of plan on wher you are going and what a vehicle is even remotely capable of doing.
The off road trial looks like the roads leading to my home. And I drive a small 800cc Suzuki to cross the massive craters xD But then again being in a third world country, I can't really complain.. I guess :/
Novel -- Assembled here. Ironic to me, anyway, that the Roxor is probably safer on-road than the CJ-3, due to its improved suspension. If they could disconnect the sway bar, it would have done much better on the ramp test, but it also has a much stiffer frame (that CJ was flexing big time)...
Thank you for posting... this brings me back to CJ-YJ wheelin'... before JK bolt-on trail-queens. Where you had to actually weld before the 35's [huge tires for the time]!
If you want all your wheels to turn when you are in mud/snow/on ice etc... just apply a little brake while driving and it will get rid of the one wheel peal.

Plus it's a hell of a lot less ugly than most UTVs and you don't have to feel guilty bashing around a 70+ year old car.
"You don't even need hill descent control"!! He exclaims Its called a manual transmission
And a real transfer case.
The Willys has light truck tires on it... in an ALL SEASON tread... wtf?
As long as you guys are having fun that's all that counts. Agree with using same size tires.
You should be ashamed of calling a vehicle that survived 50 years of wear and tear a beater.
And it won a war.

Man, I wish that roxor could be made road legal where I live. Pretty sweet. Good review brother!
I am from India..
And here in India, Cars made by Mahindra are as Rugged and flexible as Jeep there in States.
1. Under power
2. A lot of Body roll
If you're living the States and want a real off-roader which you can actually take off-road without any fear of damaging the car like with a Land Rover or a fully equipped Wrangler for a very cheap price..
**Buy the goddamm Roxor**
Plus you can customize it as your very own jeep!
Only issue is the Roxor's aren't road legal. A handful of states will allow you to register them but they're illegal at a federal level
That why we buy an old 80' 4x4 pick up, lift it and throw some mud terrain tires on it...cheaper than the mahindra and will out offroad it all day...'MERICA
s hudson huh, what?
We have honda pioneer and quads we are good here in the states with reliable off road toys
@@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 hahaha play with your plastic toys
The Scorpio engine on roxor would have been great
These guys are not overly awesome at driving off-road.
Too bad the Willy's has a lift and bigger than stock tires. The rti score would be much less
I didnt think the cj had a lift
that Willys had an open diff up front
It doesn't have a lift
May not have a lift, but it certainly has a broke in suspension where the Roxor is still factory stiff.
@13:12 Roxor to Willy's: Let's go home big brother, you have drank for the night.
I'm glad the use of "send it" tapper off in the end.
Over here in India, the CJ 2 fully restored would be worth two or more Roxors. So you now know which should have been the guinea pig.
I have never driven in a terrain like this but looking at these dudes, even I can just tell they are doing it all wrong!
Willys is street legal, equivalently capable, and cheaper. So yeah
Find me a Willys that cheap, that runs.
Bought one today for 800, Its gonna probably need a clutch and an engine rebuild but the body is good and mostly rust free and I drove it home.
$15,000 cheap ??? Put that much in a Willys and you could go ANYWHERE
"And the mahindra was limited by..." THE FACT IT DIDNT WIN WW2!!!
😆
Well the jeep didn’t win wwii. The soldier won it 🙄
Mahindra jeep was a part of Indian army when India defeated Pakistan two times
Prodriver33 India’s army was also the reason Britain didn’t get their butt kicked the first full year of the war.
Anyway, thanks for the video , but please, try to find a dog collar that gives a 20000 volt shock if the one wearing it uses the words "send it"...
make a better video since you know how it should be done. I'll watch it.
The only point in time a professional driver should ever say send it is if they're in a drift competition. Even then it's still cringe.
Those are not the OEM tires on Willys. The vehicles are not really "like for like". The CJ has after market tires and not the standard OEM but a huge tire.
The OEM tires would have performed better.
If they had used 6.00 X 16 NDT tires they would have sailed right through that mud.
The side bite on them is incredible in sand or mud and they clear themselves rather than mudding up.
Loved this video. I have a CJ4 Mahindra with a 2.1 Peugeot diesel. It has a c section open channel chassis like the willys . Great jeeps.
Right? Drives me nuts. I love my CJ but I shouldn't be stuck looking at 40 year old cars if I want to buy a barebones utility vehicle.
u should compare them with Taliban's humvee, Toyota Hilux
Lol taliban......hahah
Lmaooooo
They use American humvee too
Had to stop watching part way through after seeing how yall were treating the Willys. It hasn't survived 70 years just to get crunched up by a few punk kids.
You do know that I resurrected this Willys from the dead, right? jalopnik.com/tag/project-slow-devil
*Crickets*
A little trail rash won't hurt that Willys. Far from trashing it. Besides it's yours to do with what you want. I suggest some mud tires and a front locker if you plan to keep going to that off road park. Get the feel of how it wheels and have some fun.
It's doing what it was built for
The_Doctors_Tardis AMEN
I like both, the Mahindra and the Willys.
But I'll still take a cheap 4.0L Jeep YJ over both.
The YJ is okay, but imo Willys/Kaiser Jeeps are much better. I don't like how AMC/Chrysler softened Jeeps over the years.
hard to beat the short wheel base, turn radius and narrow trac of older military style jeeps. i think they may have known what they where doing.
Willy's > YJ
Turning radius is actually pretty bad on flatfender Jeeps due to the closed-knuckle front axles. That's one area the YJ would have it beat.
Its old School. Love it
Great comparison! We need a street version of the Mahindra!
I hate to be Captain Obvious, but... put the Mahindra diesel in the CJ2A. Done.
phatsmitty go devil 4 cyl is easy to fix on the trail. Huge plus.
Now we need the Cherokee golden eagle vs a new Cherokee
New Cherokee would break down on the way there
And the roxor saves the willies
this is the kind of content I always hoped for, keep it up guys.
For the love of God, stop with the "Send it"s. You're not even using it right and you sound like one of those parents trying to say "lit" and "fam" to relate to kids.
I was thinking the same thing! "If he says send it one more MFing time!!!!" Lol.
Glad I'm not the only one.
This whole video is cringy as hell!
Horrible attempt at being a youtuber. This video is pure shite
The Willy’s gets hung up and wenched at 10:40 & you go over the same boulders and you’re worried about the fender? Why do it in the first place?
I think if you took the Mahindra and took two of the next to the longest Leafs out of the leaf springs and had them arched you would have the ground clearance you need and it would be softer and you would get more articulation
A few of my buddies have willys jeeps one is a 45 willys with 33 inch super swamper tires. It goes through absolutely anything
Nothing like milkshake in your engine to make you frown
Father and son having fun in wild 😂. Such a delightful sight 😂😊
I'm looking forward to the L-134 rebuild video on the Willys.
ramp location has changed. there was a dip while testing roxor @1:38

@@garnetgun I like the way you think!
Is there a David Tracy playlist, if not, some hero out there...
The Willys is road legal, the Mahindra is not.
Carcaine some states will allow them lisenced and insured with simple mods. Michigan, Ohio, and I think South Carolina.....
not Federalized, non-EPA compliant and equally as unsafe as the CJ. no way it should be allowed in the road, anywhere. except India.
I can register it in my state... many states allow sxs registration. go get some laws changed.
All you need in ohio is an indicator package, rear view mirrors, and lights
billiondollardan. It can still be taken and destroyed by the feds.
Next time put the same size tires on both
Why not compare the Roxor to something you can buy new today or at least somewhat current? I don't get this.
Primarily since the old CJ2 is basically what it was modeled after
Rec Pro how don’t you get it? It’s old vs. new. Pretty fucking obvious to me.
INDIAN JEEPS can Climb on Anything..! ENGINES will be V.Small but Rough & Tough for Any ENVIRONMENT ! 💥
wrong..i have seen a lot of thar struggling to climb a 2foot ledge
akhil krishna Thar is SHIT ! I'm Talking about Crazy Gypsy's !;💥
cute little buggy but wont rely on it for a long range tourer
U do know buddy Gypsy is not Indian its Japanese, though I agree with you on mahindra.
Not with that kind of articulation they can't, but you can certainly upgrade the suspension.
Like watching a bunch of squares try and roll. Jalopnik is dork central. But cute in a way.
yall are just tearing them up
Mahindra started off building Jeeps under license in WW2 and they've been building them ever since. The elongated versions are used in rural India as people movers, where the roads that are worse than the tracks in this video, with very little maintenance or professional mechanics around. They are not fast vehicles but those things are built to take a beating.
Watch the last ten seconds. "This poor jeep, oh gosh."
Yes, it was shocking to see THAT MUCH water in that crankcase.
I wish you had given a more in depth description of the CJ-2A. Isn't the CJ-2A the agriculture model with a pto for farm attachments?
Mahindra needs a 4 inch lift... 33 inch tires and more hp and torque...
Fantastic! It's great to see a video support your guy's articles. I really like Truckyeah, keep up the good work!
You all really need to learn how to drive off road
just so you realize, because someone else said the same thing and i just copied the response:

I mentioned the difference in tire size in the video, for the record.
@@connorlee2450 should also learn to film videos. Shakey cam to the extreme
Love that diesel chatter.
We enjoy our ROXOR. The service , not so much.
No service issues . Farm Use tags in Virginia. 😎
Hashtag frame flex.
pra3t0rian Body flex too.
Deadly testing. Mahindra stood up to deadly testing of US of A. Thank you
Dam yall drive like most of these girls, never looking much past the hood. Its much better to look down the trail with some kind of plan on wher you are going and what a vehicle is even remotely capable of doing.
The off-roading experience and wisdom in this video is astounding!
The off road trial looks like the roads leading to my home. And I drive a small 800cc Suzuki to cross the massive craters xD But then again being in a third world country, I can't really complain.. I guess :/
Couldn't imagine seeing a Suzuki go through that unless it's a Jimny
Mahindra can go more than that if u drive it well. I been driving Mahindra for at least 6 years awesome performance ...never upset my expectations
accept it bro the roxor is better like a good grandson of willys
he must be like the roxor, a shitty import
Frank T. fishing the roxor isn't imported, it's made right here!
Andrew Martin yep
VK ironically you seem like an uneducated savage to me. Dont be so arrogant to make a fool out of yourself.
Great video! I was smiling the whole way through it!
Talks way too much.
Thank you for posting... this brings me back to CJ-YJ wheelin'... before JK bolt-on trail-queens. Where you had to actually weld before the 35's [huge tires for the time]!
This guy is really trying hard to loose on roxor 😂😂
If you want all your wheels to turn when you are in mud/snow/on ice etc... just apply a little brake while driving and it will get rid of the one wheel peal.
You guys went up the ramp wrong
I've saw the Mahindra Roxor while driving my my local Offroad dealership. I haven't saw one up close and personal, So i decided to watch some videos about it. It's no slouch but nothing spectacular from what i've seen on the videos. I presently own a 1956 Willys CJ5, A 1954 Willys M38A1 Military Jeep, and a 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I've also owned quite afew 70s/80 model CJ's aswell. From opinion and experience there's not many places where the Willys jeep won't go. They're my all time favorite off road vehicle.
I take that old Jeep, spend Mahindra money on it.
