Right Up Our Alley - FPV Drone Fly Through
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- This is the one that started it all. Looking for a creative way to help local businesses get back on their feet during the pandemic, JayByrd Films shot an FPV drone fly through at Bryant Lake Bowl, a vintage bowling alley in Uptown Minneapolis that has been open since 1935. Flying a Rotor Riot Squirt Cinewhoop with a GoPro HERO8 Black, Jay Christensen utilized his signature one-take fly through to showcase the space. The breathtaking cinematography and sound design caught the attention of film industry heavyweights such as James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Lee Unkrich (Coco) as well as The New York Times (read their writeup on our film below!). The video quickly went viral, and the rest is history. Let us know in the comments what you think of the time we took our drone bowling.

The drone shot is the star of the show here but don’t overlook the audio work. Most likely all of the audio here has been hand selected and carefully crafted to compliment this piece. Hats off to the sound designer
And the actors, and the director, and the story boarder ... I think it's foley work after the effect, but you're right, great sound work, just excellent.
The audio is so clean!!! Pure admiration
Yes audio work is a dream
Truly. They created conversations that sounded so natural. I got a real kick out of the guys hamming it up in the theatre(?).
Absolutely! I noticed that there is no drone noise, and yet I could see some of the actors speaking the words that I was hearing. However they did it, either with voice overs, or mic’ing the actors and somehow filtering out the drone, it was incredibly well done for a production that probably did not have a big budget.
The ending is so amazing and the whole video a masterpiece!
The ending is amazingly predictable, but still excellent.
@@michaelrenper796 I wouldnt have thought that you could pull off such a stunt without damaging the drone, though we dont really see if it was still intact after the crash :-)
@@Daniel-rd6st The drone was damaged but only slightly. These "Cinewhoop" called drones are remarkably robust.
άρε θηρίο Ευτύχη παντού είσαι !
@@danielhoffmann67 Oh wow so the drone actually did crash into them? I figured it was a cut.
This is my Aunt's Bowling Alley! She's one of the most down to earth, kind hearted and fun person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She works her ass off to make sure everyone can have the best experience there, whether it be dining in, going out for some drinks, bowling or attending the theatre. She's gone in to cover her employee's who have needed time off for their families or were sick on her own day off. She cares about people and I hope that maybe you guys can help return the love and effort she works so hard to give. Corona has really made an impact on her business and I hope that if you get the chance you can support her at the Bryant Lake Bowl. Thank you Jay for taking the time to make this video, this has got to be one of the coolest drone videos I've ever seen in my life and everything was flawless! I've never seen such control and precision while flying and its truly amazing to see. Stay safe everyone!
Thank you for this comment, really adds some extra flavor to this amazing video 🙂
Super cool environment she has created. I wish we had such a small bowling alley with a bar and theatre all in one Down Under. I wish your Aunt every success.
It's seriously one of the coolest bowling alleys I've ever seen. If I were a hipster, I'd hang out here all the time.
And in my opinion… serves the best burger in MPLS!
Such a cool video to advertise it!!

I liked that too.
My thought as well. 😀
It's a masterpiece! We enjoyed every little second watching it.

This is the stuff of dreams. Absolutely glorious
Nice seeing you here Viva. You'd probably be thrown in the Gulag if you tried to do this in Soviet Canada.
Yes Viva Frei, this is the glorious stuff of dreams. It's one of my favorite videos I've ever seen. Masterpiece.
I work at a Tech College in Minneapolis that is filming with a drone in an hour, using the same film company and the same style, except it's of a machine shop instead of a bowling alley. I'm hoping it turns out half as cool as this vid.
Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/7JZxexOGEvo/v-deo.html
My grandfather worked in a bowling alley for 18 years, maintaining the lanes, I used to help in the summers. The portion when the drone flies through the workshop in the back made me a little misty-eyed, no joke.
me too. My dad worked in the alley for years when we were kids.
@@FosterFarmsOk My dad ran a computer store for over 30 years. Watching streamers play PC Builder does the same thing to me, so I totally get it.
My computer screen almost got misty, too: the first time I saw that shot, I damn near spit out my drink and went HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT????
This comment is good UA-cam right there.
@@FosterFarmsOk Bowling! Get your bowling, here!
I got to 0:44 before I was sure that the audio was dubbed. That's a compliment to the editors. The piloting is absolutely exceptional. This should be an ad for whatever drone/camera set up you're using, because I would gladly make my first drone purchase on your recommendation after watching this video.
It would not look very good broadcasted then blown up on tv a is the problem. Need a real drone and cinema camera for that kind of work. Its great here because its only an internet delivery. I saw it on tv when the news was showing it. Did not look nearly as good as it does here.
Also you will need lots of practice before you could fly like this. It was all dubbed sound because all the GoPro is going to pick up is prop noise. At 0:44 you can see a shadow of the drone
@@i8urbabi This video goes up to 2K resolution so it would depend on the verion the broadcaster used. IDK the native resolution of the cam on the drown but even at 1080P it would look great on most TVs.
If the audio wasn't dubbed all you would hear is the screaming drone motors.
@@michaelirvin5691 I saw it first on TV and had to stop because was so blocky. 8 bit video is not good OTA. It looks as intended online. Shoot it on a Red or an Arri mini and it would look how it does here on the TV.
Absolutely spectacular
An inspiration for all~
Didn't expect to you here!
that Big Lebowski quote really tied the shot together
HOW!!!! Behind the Scenes video is needed ASAP
For real!!
Flew a small drone around a rented bowling alley + everything staged + redubbed everything with fake audio and overdub in post. Done.
@@dasoulfoodbuffet no shit everything staged and redubbed everybody knows that, its the flying and movement of the drone that we wanna know about
@@JLB6250 I'm no expert, but there were a couple of moments where clips were stitched together (0:16) and the only other thing I reckon is the curtain at the back of the lanes when it goes up behind it, was taken off and then masked back in so the drone could fit? If you pause it just as it's going in I feel like you can see the cut lines and a bit of feathering. Maybe.
Also when it goes underneath the ball racks near the end you can see a drone shadow on the bowler and the wall, which is cool. I was beginning to think there were bits of track used until I saw that.
@@Squaremuffin I assumed there was at least one edit in there and Iknow it was all filmed on a drone. What im really curious about is weather or not it was a really good live pilot wearing FPV goggles or it was a programed route. The speed and accuracy of the movement is crazy. If it is a guy piloting the drone and they broke the whole thing down into a couple of segmented courses (which is probably most likely) how many times did that guy polishing the bowling ball get hit with the drone?
Okay, this is amazing. Now you need to show us the "Making of Right Up Our Alley" video.
With another drone that was following this one.
Flew a small drone around a rented bowling alley + everything staged + redubbed everything with fake audio and overdub in post. Done.
@@dasoulfoodbuffet thanks for all that info but a behind the scenes would still be great 😉
@@dasoulfoodbuffet lol yea the way to go about it is not miraculous, what is impressive is the amount of time and effort dedicated to likely create that shot/edit to look like one shot.

They kept flying around and around the lanes and bar, and I was stressing out that they were never going to fly into the restaurant or theater. Then they did, and I could relax. Haha! I've probably spent more time in that little theater than on the lanes. Great to see Bryant Lake Bowl get some press, it's got something for everyone!
Holy shit, that was awesome!
Glad to see you around Jesus
I informed everyone in the alley that nobody fucks with you.
Fly through of heaven would be otherworldly. Ask your dad.

I really love how quiet this video is. All of the noises fading in and out just give me chills for some reason. This is a work of art!
The only thing that was added in post-production was the audio and dialogue, due to the loud buzz of the drone.
"I'm walking through the scene and I'm cuing each person to throw the ball, or it's coming back up," Jaska said. "It takes a lot of effort. A lot of time."
It all looks effortless in the final video thanks to the work of drone operator Jay Christensen, who says it took about five practice runs, before the team started filming with the actors and movements.
"We probably did 10 takes with the camera running," Christensen said. "The first few, the timing was way off and we would get to a certain part and the bowler wouldn't be there, or maybe the drone was a little out of position, so it was cool to see, halfway through the process, how we had to kind of re-structure everything."
Christensen says most of the questions he has received is about a portion of the video when he flies the drone through a tight space where the bowling lanes meet the pin machines in the back of the bowling alley.
"All morning I was like stressed about that part," Christensen said. "I thought, that's going to be a hard move. I ended up going 15-for-15 on that (including practice). I never crashed once on that move."
great stuff. Have been on sets as enactor for films that have done 1 move scenes and it's so damn stressful s an actor. Good on ya for this

@@pashadyne I'm talking about as far as making a scene that involves a camera doing a 360 inside of a building without using any CGI I'm pretty sure you seen 360 shots done in movies where they do use CGI for instance Michael Bay in every other movie he does my point was that it doesn't always need to be done with computer effects the way this bowling alley seen was shot looks so much better than anything Hollywood tends to shoot and this was done with no special effects that's why I said Hollywood should take notes. I forget people always take any thing someone posts too deep it's as if you have to expect a war to anything you post when you just trying to give a compliment to the original maker.

I imagine they screen The Big Lebowski there pretty often.
I know the place well. There used to be a gaming store right next to it back in the 70s called The Little Tin Soldier Shop. They sold D&D stuff, wargames, that kind of thing. Its on West Lake in Minneapolis.
And people ask why we would ever live in Minneapolis...this kind of stuff.
I was born in Minnesota. I moved to LA in the 1990's. Once while visiting home, I told one of my uncle's that people in California thought I was nuts when I said Minneapolis is so cool. My uncle said, "never tell anyone that again". I asked him why, he replied "they'll move here".
I still love Minneapolis, does anyone remember the Uptown Cafe? Yum.

That is the coolest 'plan-sequence' we've seen to date. Mr Scorsese is waiting on the line.
Love how the radio in the shop is talking about accumulation. That’s ALWAYS the topic of radio conversation in Minneapolis!
I do believe the difference between Chicago and Minneapolis is that in Chicago, if the radio tells you 4-6”, you might get 2”, max, whereas in Minneapolis if they tell you 4-6”, 9 times out of 10, you’re looking at 8”. It’s like they don’t have the heart to give you the bad news.
*Can't believe these type of scenes are very rare in movies*
