Ready for your C500MKII v EOS R video. Out of interest, would you hold on to your C200 when you get this? I'll definitely be buying a C500MKII, but dont know if I'm ready to offload my C200 just yet. Find that 4k 8bit is super useful and just really love that camera.
Who knows! But just like the c200 is still a fantastic camera and well worth the money when the Ursa mini pro exists. This would still be a fantastic camera if that happened. Carl

I was once told that since 2017 the C100 MK2 was having such a big boost globally it didn't seem needed. Think people realised they needed a good quality image and ergonomics was better that not brilliant 4k. But these days it's an arms race I think some cameras don't get utilised at all such as the MH-25 from canon FF HD cinema camera. With 4million ISO really wanted to see some night time animal documentaries with it but I don't think people notice or care cos it's HD
This might be the camera with everything you ever wished for...all in one. Steep price but you’ll never need another A camera for years to come. I can see this being an industry standard that every producer looks to work with
@ProAV TV Hey guys, excellent review. Waiting for some nice test footage! QUESTION: Is it clear if the RAW Light recording at 1-120fps on the 2K crop mode refers to the Super35 or Super16 mode? Both sensor crops offer 2K recording capabilities, and in XF-AVC we know it's on the Super16. Perhaps the RAW Light recording is in Super35? That'd be DOPE. Otherwise shooting 120fps with a 2.92 crop factor kind of makes it impossible to get a wide on that slowmo.
Looks like a perfect camera honestly! Also, if the cinema raw lite color science is the same as the C200, the C200 will be a great raw bcam to the C500. Too far out of my budget but I’m betting this will be the new standard doc cam.
Sure it's a high end camera with a price tag to go with that. But we have to remember this is a large format 6K raw cinema camera. Compared to any of the rest of those on the market, this is actually very competitively priced indeed. Carl

As a C300M2 owner I would love to switch over once I see how this camera performs in low light. As you do mention, the auto focus on Canon is truly a life saver and very organic looking when engaged...especially the front One Shot button .. which the C500 seems to have as well. Not sure how affordable it really is but I can imagine the quality will be very good. Of course the weakness of the C300M2 is lack of 4K60 so wondering how this camera handles that issue.

C300 is their broadcast use camera. I certainly hope they will continue the line. Yes, this can do everything the C300 can do. But I think a version of this without the raw to keep the cost down, focusing on the XF-AVC broadcast codec, would do really well. Carl
What is the signal coming out of the hdmi and sdi? Is it a raw signal? They say uncompressed signal externally from 12-g sdi so possibly black magic raw capable?
Really interested to find out what was going though the designers minds when they thought putting the sound control on the dumb side of the camera? Not great for one person operating, especially for hand held work or is this just a camera designed for drones and gimbal work?
I'm excited by this camera and I'm almost certainly going to get one (depends on what I think of the FX9 when I see one in the flesh), However, there are a few disappointments with this camera where I just can't understand the design thinking. Canon just don't seem to be able to get the design exactly right but if they could they would have a camera that everyone would buy. So here are my gripes. No.1 Why haven't Canon added a variable ND? What a home goal that is. We know most future cameras will have a variable ND and it's unacceptable that the C500 Mkii doesn't have the feature. No.2 The media slots should be on the other side of the camera and the audio pots should be where the media slots are currently located. This is just sloppy design work. No.3 The XLR inputs on the big expansion unit should be on the opposite side. Where they are now means that whenever you have XLRs plugged in they are going to constantly get in the way of the operator. No.4 it should have 2 video/viewfinder ports at the front so that you can connect both the touch-screen and the canon viewfinder at the same time. Currently it's either one or the other. Come on Canon, add a second port and charge a couple of hundred quid extra...I'll pay it for the convenience and flexibility. No.5 The camera should have way more options for slow-mo full stop!. Maybe this will come with future firmware updates. I know this is predominantly a 'cinema' camera but it's clear that Canon have 'designed it as a crossover camera that can do both cinema and run-and-gun shoulder mounted acquisition but the strange (but typical Canon) layout makes it less than perfect for the shoulder mounted work. I just don't get it. This could have been the 'perfect' camera and had they got it right, even at the price, it could have been the camera that outsold everything else but Canon just don't seem to be capable of designing cameras properly. At the very least, the audio pots should be on the operator side of the camera, I mean, that's just crazy. Having said all that, I've been waiting for this camera for 2 years (well, the C300 Mk3) so these issues won't really put me off. However, the ergonomics of the Sony FX9 look better and it has the variable ND and it now has good autofocus AND it's cheaper so who knows, when it comes time to hand over the money I may just go for the Sony.
Canon haven't specified, I would expect it to be similar to the C200 though. I also haven't seen any specifics on the Anamorphic mode i'm afraid. When we get more time with the camera we can look into these points in more detail Carl
Thank you for yet another great camera review, Carl!.. Now this really made my life difficult, having to choose between the Kinefinity MAVO, the Canon C500-MKII and the RED DSMC2. However the RED is now overpriced for a S-35 5K sensor... So that leaves the other two to decide from. The Kine is still cheaper as the MAVO LF Pro Package is in the same price range as the basic default package of the Canon... And the Kine seems to beat everything in terms of hi-speed shooting... And I love it's image. I still need to see what the C500 MKII image looks like. But they are now so much closer, with the same modular approach, form factor and price... I guess this is when going with a known brand might make the difference, to attract more customers.
We are definitely spoilt for choice at the moment, so many great cameras! I wouldn't say the RED is overpriced actually. They are still a higher quality product, better suited for some production work. What is fantastic is that Kinefinity, Canon etc. are bring products that can well and truely compete in terms of image quality at a pricepoint that is reachable for owner operators. If the rumours posted on Sony Alpha Rumours about a new Sony FX9 to be launched this year are true, then the latest trend in cinema cameras seems to be all about full frame. Whether the FS7 will actually be replaced or not I do not know but I do hope that Sony will make some physical improvements to the body also. I like Canon's thinking here with a body that essentially has everything (including timecode!!!) with modular expansion units of varying sizes and more importantly, varying prices!
Well, this certainly legitimizes 6k as a standard. Blackmagic, Panasonic, Zcam, Sony, now canon have gone for it. I'm surprised, because I find a tough time telling a visual difference between it and 4k, but the filesizes may be more than twice as large. Maybe it will be a successful selling point for those cameras, but I suspect most people would appreciate more dynamic range, a more robust codec, better assists, better preamps, better timecode management, better viewfinders, or any other way to spend r&d money. For those that think that the same arguments apply to 4k from 1080, I'd say that visual jump was considerable.
Its about downsampling. The best way to get fantastic 1080p is to downsample from 4K. Now we are starting to distribute in 4K, to get the same quality improvement from downsampling you need to be shooting in 6K Carl
It's too expensive and only current canon users will be interested, look at every other camera that is cheaper can do the same for most features and you can have more than one camera.. this is a rental camera at most
Alps Lifee i see what you’re saying . but you pay 15k for something that just works and has a lot of convenience features . the autofocus, the raw recording, the modularity, the EVF/monitor, audio are all things you won’t get in a complete package from other cameras

Oh no, you poor thing. You have my commiserations. Having used Red gear on many projects I don't think I would have a Red camera given. When they work, the images is outstanding but Red cameras are big heavy clumsy unreliable overpriced garbage made by one of the most arrogant companies in the world. Great! Another camera costing an arm and a leg---that you sucker in and make payments on. Then about 9 months later Canon comes out with a new shiny thing and the price of the camera you just bought drops 6 thousand dollars---and then three months later it drops another 4 thousand bucks---and you're super upside down---but Canon doesn't care---they go their merry way ripping off faithful customers (that are shrinking by the day) and crippling cameras. Meanwhile, other manufacturers are making great strides, offering MUCH better features and equal quality for thousands and thousands less. IMO, Blackmagic color is much better---and look what they give you for less---much less. When Fuji makes a new model they take the new features and put them in the older models insofar as they can. They're faithful to their faithful customers---and they're always updating cameras--even older ones. Canon just abandons them---so does Sony, but not as bad as Canon. I believe you are confusing canon with sony. Canon's cinema life cycles are Years. The last C500 was 7 years ago. The C300 mark II was almost 5 years ago and the latest camera, the C200, was over 2 years ago. I don't know where this 9 month cycle came from.
@@JamesJacksonFilmz Most makers put out a product on the market with a mind to competing with similar products (and price levels)already on the market. In other words, other camera manufacturers create a product with the intention of competing with OTHER companies. Canon doesn't do that. They seem to be competing only within their own line. And they way they "compete" is by crippling some cameras to "protect" other cameras in their line. But on the market, with analogous products from other makers, Canon's niggardly set of features looks like something you'd find back when the GH4 was first the hot item---how many years ago was that?!? Their idea of "competing" is to offer less than products other makers offer at the same quality level, and charge more for it. But that's not all. Canon is not at good. I saw a video a few days ago from Carlos Quintero, a very experienced shooter and a fan of Canon. At one point he said, in paraphrase, you all know I'm a fan of the C-200, but the look of the BMPCC 4k/6k, makes the C-200 image look like video. Indeed it does. I like the look and colors from my BMPCC 6k MUCH more than the C-200. And it shoots RAW, and is so easy to use. Like the US automakers back in the 1970s, Canon has ignored the competition and lost enormous amounts of the market---and the decline continues. It seems they're determined to become a computer printer company. I hope they do. Worst marketing plan of any camera company, EVER! Canon's new "truth in advertising" slogan: Pay more, Get less.

Any word on if this camera has any weather sealing? Also, what are the resolutions and frame rates in the anamorphic modes?
Canon haven't specified, I would expect it to be similar to the C200 though.

Considering this for a replacement to my camcorder.
This would be a big step up in image quality to all fixed lens camcorders. Very different cameras for different styles of work though.

What drawback is there for moving the sensor? I have never heard such a thing.
You can get jitters or in organic pixel movements using Ibis, especially if you are using a gimbal. I would get it often on the GH5

Does this camera focuses when you do 4K slow motion?
I didn’t check, but I believe it can autofocus in the 4K 60p mode.

i wish they had a s35 sensor option for this camera for the high frame rates, and prores recording options.
I have a feeling that thenc300mk3 will be the s35 version.

It's too expensive and only current canon users will be interested, look at every other camera that is cheaper can do the same for most features and you can have more than one camera.. this is a rental camera at most
Alps Lifee i see what you’re saying . but you pay 15k for something that just works and has a lot of convenience features . the autofocus, the raw recording, the modularity, the EVF/monitor, audio are all things you won’t get in a complete package from other cameras

RAW means 12 Bit Cinema RAW Light?
Yes, exactly. It works in a very similar way to the c200. 12 bit in 25p, 10 bit in 50p

@@dallasbagley its the full C700 FF sensor which i believe was around 14-15 stops. Also as someone who loves their pocket 6K, this camera is in a whole other stratosphere.

Indeed, it down samples from the full 6K sensor so you still get the full frame look.

They could have disrupted and destroyed the market if it was sold for 7.000$ and I'm sure they would have earned much more money. Great Great camera though. Too bad I'll not be able to spend that money, but I'll certainly rent it, a lot.

Oh no, you poor thing. You have my commiserations. Having used Red gear on many projects I don't think I would have a Red camera given. When they work, the images is outstanding but Red cameras are big heavy clumsy unreliable overpriced garbage made by one of the most arrogant companies in the world. There's little justification these days to waste your money buying Red gear

Great! Another camera costing an arm and a leg---that you sucker in and make payments on. Then about 9 months later Canon comes out with a new shiny thing and the price of the camera you just bought drops 6 thousand dollars---and then three months later it drops another 4 thousand bucks---and you're super upside down---but Canon doesn't care---they go their merry way ripping off faithful customers (that are shrinking by the day) and crippling cameras. Meanwhile, other manufacturers are making great strides, offering MUCH better features and equal quality for thousands and thousands less. IMO, Blackmagic color is much better---and look what they give you for less---much less.
When Fuji makes a new model they take the new features and put them in the older models insofar as they can. They're faithful to their faithful customers---and they're always updating cameras--even older ones. Canon just abandons them---so does Sony, but not as bad as Canon. They just don't care about their customers.

I believe you are confusing canon with sony. Canon's cinema life cycles are Years. The last C500 was 7 years ago. The C300 mark II was almost 5 years ago and the latest camera, the C200, was over 2 years ago. I don't know where this 9 month cycle came from.

@@JamesJacksonFilmz Most makers put out a product on the market with a mind to competing with similar products (and price levels)already on the market.
In other words, other camera manufacturers create a product with the intention of competing with OTHER companies. Canon doesn't do that. They seem to be competing only within their own line. And they way they "compete" is by crippling some cameras to "protect" other cameras in their line.
But on the market, with analogous products from other makers, Canon's niggardly set of features looks like something you'd find back when the GH4 was first the hot item---how many years ago was that?!? Their idea of "competing" is to offer less than products other makers offer at the same quality level, and charge more for it.
But that's not all. Canon is not at good. I saw a video a few days ago from Carlos Quintero, a very experienced shooter and a fan of Canon. At one point he said, in paraphrase, you all know I'm a fan of the C-200, but the look of the BMPCC 4k/6k, makes the C-200 image look like video.
Indeed it does. I like the look and colors from my BMPCC 6k MUCH more than the C-200. And it shoots RAW, and is so easy to use.
Like the US automakers back in the 1970s, Canon has ignored the competition and lost enormous amounts of the market---and the decline continues. It seems they're determined to become a computer printer company. I hope they do.
