I wouldn't be surprised if he spent his days trying to break Photoshop and then figuring out how to fix it. Is there something he doesn't know about the program? Like damn dude, mad respect.
Ok so I've been using Photoshop for the past 4 years, I never discovered this channel until the last few months. I desperately tried to search up tutorials to learn Photoshop. It's safe to say that I have learnt more in the past 3 months from this channel than I have done in my entire 3 and a half year of using Photoshop.
I wonder if there is a way to set smoothness to zero by default under some preference tab. This would make it easier in the sense this would be used more often and you don't have to worry about changing it.
Ayy this is super helpful; I've been playing with painting in greyscale and then converting to color with adjustment layers and gradient maps always frustrated me because of the added contrast; now I know why!
In addition to putting the Smoothing control at 0 (Gradient Editor), try changing the "Method" drop down from "Pereptual" to "Classic" (Gradcient Properties). I find that gives a better B&W starting point. Alternately, try "Linear" in the Method drop down (Properties) and different Smoothing settings (Editor).
I have started to watch less Photoshop tutorials over the years, mainly because I started to watch more of Unmesh's videos. One source for all of your Photoshop needs. Thanks man.
I use a black-and-white gradient all the time to add contrast instead of a traditional curve layer. Then, I adjust the opacity slider to set the amount. If it's a color image I change the blending mode from normal to luminosity to bring back the color.
It's not faulty, it's just that it is very exact. The reason the gradient changed is because you started a few pixels away from the very edge of your artboard and the absolute black is dragged a little bit inwards. You have to be very precise so it won't change. The reason the image (the girl with the beanie) changed is simplier, the original photo's black is not absolute black, it's dark gray, same for white, gray, almost white. You have to check the darkest and brightest points on your images to have the best results. Photos rarely contain absolute black or absolute white.
Explaining is so much clearing and I am weak in English but I can understand what do you wanna say. Thank a lot. One of my teacher in other world is that you :)
Wow, I just discovered that the gradient mapping wasn't exact last week and couldn't find anyone explaining why or how to fix it. Then this popped up in my feed and solved the problem! Thanks!
I have always wondered about the contrast and I got the answer here. Thanks a lot. However I should point out that from your explanation I can conclude that the behavior of the tool is extremely customizable, not faulty. I think the title of the video is a bit misleading in that sense.
I wish there was a FULL Photoshop guide of yours from "Start to Finish(all tutorials)" at one place. You are no doubt the best TEACHER in this Industry for EDITING but whenever I watch your video, I feel that my mind is congested. I know I am asking too much but PLEASE try to make tutorials from BEGINNING to END like a Master class at ONE PLACE. There are many like me who have been eagerly waiting to learn in an organized way. We need people like you and instead of we being half-knowledged, we could put everything behind and gather at one place and learn your lessons in a disciplined fashion. You already are a ONE of a KIND, the Bruce Lee of Photoshop, a true GEM and I am sure you will become the rarest for most of us in no time :) Eshwaras Naga Studiothreecs
here is the result of his early study of photoshop. I watched one of your interviews, so you are very good at photoshop. I thought at first that you are one of the makers of this unique software. Thanks for your tutorials, because I am one of those you helped.
I actually had realized this, when I was applying the random gradient map as you showed on a previous video when I tried since I reactivated my adobe, it didn't give a great result and I played with the smoothness button and this is when I realize that it used to not be defaulted like this before. But it's great that you explained it, cause sometimes when photoshop made the update , it's confusing to adjust and know what to do when things don't work the same.
Hi Unmesh,I am following your channel since couple of months finding very informative and helpful. This is my first comment, I have subscribed almost 8 -12 other channels to improve my graphics designing skills.i was really surprised that one Pakistani youtuber(Gfxmentor) was saying about your channel lot of good things and review and all.after that I subscribed your channel.i think the name of your channel piximperfect missed out because I Alwayas search the keyword graphic designing that's why UA-cam doesn't recommend your channel.i really like your work and visualization and teaching skills.keep up the good work.👌👌👌👍👍👍
This was great. I'm a very experienced PS user (got in at CS2) and even teach it sometimes, and this was totally under my radar. Very, very useful! Thanks!
So if we take the image that you showed just 20 seconds in, and choose gradient map with zero smoothness then it shouldn't change. This video is perfect apart from the fact that you didn't return to this image to show this. Awesome channel Unmesh. Your pace, detail level and demeanour are (pixel) perfect.
Understanding the gradient editor gives you amazing control of the colour and tonality of your image., I like how you explained smooting I always thought of this setting just allowed for smoother transtions with your gradient. Not that it added contrast, Though I did make my own gradient by mapping 25% grey to the corresponding point on the line than 50% and 75% grey.. Than I saved the custom gradient that is not so contrasty and much more pleasing with some images, But, unlike using smoothing to control this wth the default gradient. My gradient puts a governor on how much contrast you can add with my custom gradient. This has its drawbacks but if I wish to increase contrast I can always add an S curves layer on top of it or use the soft light blend mode and play with the opacity to get it just right, Perhaps you could do a deep dive into gradients and the gradient tool, You often have a unique take on tools and techniques that I find intersting and very useful., Thank you,.
I thin that in the first example. The blacks of the B/W image isn't 100% black. The gradient maps, maps this to 100% black and that's why the contrast is enhanced.
this is actually so damn useful. i knew about the smoothness slider and i still didn't think it was going to be the culprit. this was seriously like an episode of LOST
Well i'm very thankful you putting these videos out. But can you do a video where we can use an overlay for a video (not streaming) irrespective of length. Thank you in advance.
There is a significant change because there is a lot less pure black in the original image. The gradient you used is gradiating from black to white in equal sized increments, where in real life light, this very rarely occurs. Generally speaking, there it's always a little more or less light/shadow on a specific area than a perfect tonal gradation across the board. Also, depending on the black to white conversion used originally, things will have a different outcome. A LAB channel conversion to B&W is noticeably different to a gradient map conversion.
I wouldn't be surprised if he spent his days trying to break Photoshop and then figuring out how to fix it. Is there something he doesn't know about the program? Like damn dude, mad respect.
I agree man!
I have a feeling the Adobe's team contacts him looking for guidance.
unmesh's hair and beard are absolutely perfect
also love his style and his look...a very pleasant person and the greatest teacher I have never met!!
@@francequirion9547 Well you haven't met!
Thats why they call em piximperfect

Oh wow. This explains so much of what I’ve been seeing when using GMaps to match colour grading. Thanks!
This Guys way of explaining is LIT!!😍😘
Hands down you are the best teacher for photoshop I’ve ever seen outstanding with what you do.
He's the best teacher on UA-cam, period.
FIXED!!! I was wondering why my custom gradient maps were not accurate in my b&w to color conversions . Thank you so very much!
I think i have saved every one of your videos to my photoshop tutes folder on UA-cam. You never cease to amaze me.
You are such a great teacher, thank you for all of the great content. Take care!
Well damn, 15+ years of professional Photoshop experience and I just learned there's a smoothness slider.
I wonder if there is a way to set smoothness to zero by default under some preference tab. This would make it easier in the sense this would be used more often and you don't have to worry about changing it.
@@rondeldebbio9219 He creado una acción para un degradado al 50% de suavidad y funciona solo para ése y nada más.
you are not watching enough tutorials 🤣
@Therizinosaurus
I almost never watch tutorials lol.
You can use ctrl+shift+u (or Image>Adjustments>Desaturate) to remove color from the image.
This thumbnail is enough for me to watch your video....because here is you.....not any model.....❤️❤️
Don't really need to watch... but you are such a good teacher it's worth a listen.
You are watching
Helpful, thanks! I don't use Gradient Map often so I never noticed what the Smoothness setting did.
Ayy this is super helpful; I've been playing with painting in greyscale and then converting to color with adjustment layers and gradient maps always frustrated me because of the added contrast; now I know why!
From look to Talent.... Unmesh sir have it all ❤️😍 this video is so helpful to me. Thanku ❤️

What I love about you is the fact you provide the science and mechanics behind each technique.

yup i thought the same thing. we can check it using the histogram to see if there are pure black and white.
Another great vid, Unmesh! Thank you so much! Stay safe and healthy!

I learn something new from every video. Thank you!
very useful knowledge..Thanks a lot Umesh
Man.. i always wondered why my colors came out odd sometimes when i used the gradient map. Never knew that the culprit was in the same window!
Another awesome tutorial Unmesh.

Great tip! Your explanations are excellent.
I would do anything to have a tutor like this. Excellent
Thank you very much for your explanation Sir
Very well defined gradient map... Love all your video Unmesh sir.😍😍😍 Can you please say is there any of your video regarding "threshold"?
thanks you sir for your teaching of Photoshop
Good look .Thank you so very much!

Great example and explanation,,,, thanx broo....
I use gradient mapping for coloring drawing so this is some very useful info!
The new outro is so great
I thin that in the first example. The blacks of the B/W image isn't 100% black. The gradient maps, maps this to 100% black and that's why the contrast is enhanced.
this is actually so damn useful. i knew about the smoothness slider and i still didn't think it was going to be the culprit. this was seriously like an episode of LOST

Awesome!! Perfection!! Wise beyond words.
Thank for you effort , It is useful tutorial
Excellent! Thanks a lot.

Man, gradient maps are my favs when I am having fun with Photoshop and I haven't thought about smoothness before. Now I feel enlightened XD
