the best / worst part about photoshop is that there's always more to learn! I'm finally learning digital painting as a traditional illustrator so learning these tricks are AWESOME!
Simply amazing. I mean, there are plenty of tutorials on how to use gradient maps, and color your artwork with them, but this one might be the best one yet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Aaron Love your Art! I'll Love to see here or be able to buy on your Gumroad more of your tutorials, maybe on Portraits and Environments, your strokes are lovely!
omg, this is really helpful! and here I was, using hard light like a fool. I never thought about doing it this way :o Thanks so much for the tutorial ♥
love your work, it's just a good feeling being able to listen to your voice and learn some stuff during these hard times. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication.
Thanks for you lessons master! I finally got it! I hope this won't be the last lesson. I would like to know about your personal brush settings, with some explanation
Want to see more of your tutorials I was waiting for this so long i am your oldest follower and big fan of your style and your brushes I am using them from last 2 years
Maciej Grzegorz Oprządek omg ikr the more you get to know about the options the more you get confused . Like its an unlimited world with unlimited powers . Its a bit confusing to learn al of them
Aaron, just met your channel and subscribed. This is a GREAT tutorial. I've always struggled doing this, I wasn't really understanding the whole black-layer-screen-mode dynamic. You explained everything in details with a 007-villain voice, what else can go wrong? Anyway, outstanding job, definitely trying this one on my next work.
need more Tutorials!! lets us suck some knowledge off you please! and it is also so pleasant to listen to your voice ! ty for this tutorial nonetheless
can you explain why you need all those different layers please. i’m very confused as a total beginner :( i get the new layer for painting with a brush but why the other black layer?
Can someone help me TT I followed the exact steps but I still am running into the same problem. I would have the gradient map (fire gradient) on the top, have the blank layer right underneath the gradient layer and have the black solid layer under everything (and this layer is on screen). But I dont know why the gradient causes like a slight pinkish hue to the photo. When i draw on the blank layer the gradient painting is fine, but the gradient map keeps making the whole picture pinkish for some reason :/ and my black layer turns into a light brown for some reason TT when i added in the black layer I dont know what im doing wrong TT
Since we're using a screen layer, won't the gradient map color also be affected by the screen effect, so making it lighter than we set it in the gradient?
well im doing exactly what you did, and my picture is blue when i make the black layer, and the clipping gradient map, im so frustratied right now, why it doesnt work WITH ME
Can you convert your procreate brushes into infinitepainter brushes. Infinitepainter is simple and great but I don't know why no one talks about it. It's a request if possible please do it 😶
I didn't get most of it, perhaps I need to watch it multiple times. Especially, the the "safe zone " layer. I don't understand why you need to use a Clipping Mask over a black filled layer in Screen mode in order not to make the Gradient colours bleed over the layer beneath it if it's already entirely black . And also what happens to the rest of the rest of the skin, I assume you might have to change the Blending mode including the colours in the Gradient slider as the entire face cannot reflect a fire light source. But overall, brilliant technique, just wish I understood the concept behind it, lol
You can definitely use it as a final step... especially in scenarios where the light is very distinctive. It works great for stylized pieces or more monochromatic pieces... That way you can be more playful with it and not worry about mixing other light sources too accurately. But yeah, it can be used any time in the process really.
I have not tried using this method in procreate but if I had to guess... I would say... create a screen layer and fill it with black like we did here and then using procreates colour dynamics... you may be able to create a gradient in the brush settings itself. I will have a play myself and see if I can get it to work :)
I'm not suuure... Unless i am mistaken, procreate does not have adjustment layers like Photoshop does. You may be able to create a gradient in the brush settings itself and then paint directly using a pressure gradient. I'll have a look myself and see if I can get it to work! :)
Aaron Griffin thanks for the reply! :) I’ve never worked with Photoshop so a lot of the jargon goes over my head so these vids are great to help me understand exactly what to do etc. I barely use any of the fancier procreate features but I want to, so I look forward to hearing if you find any similar method :)
Me: trying to follow along Adobe: pffft idk what he's got but you don't have that shit, even though we're the same year, oh shit look at the cool stuff he can do, bet you wish you could do that huh?
Way to use gradient maps to your advantage. 💪
wow official photoshop
Thank you very much Adobe!! :) :)
@@AaronGriffin damn even photoshop be like: "Oh shit didn't know you could do that."
Pls make a tutoril on how to illustrate using texture brushes like you or just explaining your workflow. Will be really helpful
Please more of this! You are my favourite digital painter by a wide margin and your work has always inspired me. I love to hear about your process!
Wow, thank you very much, those are very kind words indeed! I'm so glad you like my work, there are definitely more to come! :)
Dude, that's the answer I've been looking for, specially when applying several light sources over black and white values.
Thank you very much!
the best / worst part about photoshop is that there's always more to learn! I'm finally learning digital painting as a traditional illustrator so learning these tricks are AWESOME!
Came from Instagram.
Please keep making tutorials.
Glad I found your channel

@@AaronGriffin keep it up!🙌 i'll be waiting you for next update! Thanks again:)
Yay! Finally tutorials
Yaaaaay 🤩
Awesome trick for lighting
NO WAY ! He speaks ? Brilliant - Thanks for the Tut Aaron - Love your work
This tutorial changed my life. Thank you!
this is awesome, i like this process a lot bec it allows you to use special brushes to "paint" in the specified gradient to give it more style.
Great tutorial! Note it doesn't work in CMYK. The screen blending mode lightens everything beneath it in CMYK, even when it is completely black.
Fortunately your comment is there otherwise I was going to go crazy, I didn't understand why it didn't work for me, thank you bro
Simply amazing. I mean, there are plenty of tutorials on how to use gradient maps, and color your artwork with them, but this one might be the best one yet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

can you explain why you need all those different layers please. i’m very confused as a total beginner :(
i get the new layer for painting with a brush but why the other black layer?
Love this and your work! I’m assuming there isn’t an equivalent for this in ProCreate :(?

I thought I could do the same thing for csp but the pressure sensitivity dont work that way... it like the opacity is still the same color

would this be able to create an aura around characters?
thank you for sharing $$$$ love you sir
You could've used layer mask on the gradiant map layer instead of making a screen layer and then clipping the gradiant map to it. Am I right?
Can i use your brush pack for commercial use?
Can you convert your procreate brushes into infinitepainter brushes.

please teach how to draw portraits
sir do u have any basic digital painting course i have just started digital work...
is there a way to do this in procreate?
more plz
Do you think this is a valid method to add light to your finished pieces? or that is kinda "cheap" way?
You can definitely use it as a final step... especially in scenarios where the light is very distinctive. It works great for stylized pieces or more monochromatic pieces... That way you can be more playful with it and not worry about mixing other light sources too accurately. But yeah, it can be used any time in the process really.
:-) Good one !
How can we use the same techniq in procreate.....???
thank you ...
i subscribe
Thank u
Does it work in Procreate?

Well I tried this, and my image looked absolutely horrible. Maybe you should include your brush settings next time you try to make a video like this.
Вначале рисуем круг.
А потом дорисовываем сову.
🤗🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Make a procreate tutorial
Bro have the same voice of SourSweet :0
Me: trying to follow along
Adobe: pffft idk what he's got but you don't have that shit, even though we're the same year, oh shit look at the cool stuff he can do, bet you wish you could do that huh?
It doesn't work 🥲🥲🥲
I followed step by step but it doesn't work.
How can we do something similar to this in Procreate?
