I know some people will look at me like I have 3 heads, but the C5 Vette is a dream car of mine .Well besides the Eleanor Mustang. Someday I'll get one, its definently achievable.

It’s absolutely an attainable dream car and that’s what’s so great about Corvettes in general! Eleanor Mustang is another great choice! What a fantastic car, just a little more pricey than the Corvette 😐 Keep grinding and get that C5! Let me know when you do!

@@rickhunter6513 i know but usually most people's dream cars are usually in the 6 digit figures like Ferraris or Lambos. Mine is just a 97-04 vette that can be had for under 10k lol.

I mean i could go out and buy one, but living in the northeast is hard on these cars and i dont have a garage. Or a winter beater. Plus prices up here are insane compared to what i been looking at down south. And I have a wife and kids. So right now its kind of tough. I guess im just scared to pull the trigger on one and finding out its a lemon. I just got to keep researching and keep looking until the iron gets hot and then I'll strike on a really good deal when i see one.

richard c I remember when C5 came out in 97 and it immediately vaulted up to one of my dream cars and it was not cheap back then. I think the design is timeless and still looks better than the last couple iterations of the corvette.
300zx is also another dream car I could never hope to attain back when they came out. Unfortunately they are nowhere near as reliable as the C5
Hope you get your C5 one day. They are amazing vehicles 👍🏼

No way it's an hour of work. Just did my oil pressure sensor and it was about 5 hours including the trip to AutoZone. Plus I had to bring back the loaner socket the next day so it was 5.5 hours. Yes, I took the intake manifold off. No f***ing way you're getting in back there without pulling it. I tried.

I bought a C5 convertible with 41,000 for $18,000 from a co-worker who had five Vettes. It is in showroom condition: bright red with tan top and interior, tuned exhaust and modified to produce about 450 hp. I had to replace the clutch ($2,600) and had the steering Column lockout problem. After three lockout failures, I replaced with a bypass on sale on internet. I replaced the radio with modern system that includes backup camera. No other problems, though I only have 49,050 miles on it. The car looks and sounds great and is a hoot to drive. I am more a motorcycle guy with four bikes.

I purchased a 2002 black on black convertible corvette with 24,000 miles. I was the 2nd owner. Everything worked. It was spotless. I really enjoyed it. Plus great mpg and mph! Then I started having problems with the electronics. The Chevy dealers did not want to work on it. They told me it was too hard to fix given its age. $2,000 later it was still not fixed. I found a loose wire in the door and fixed it myself. The tire pressure system stop working. The shop wanted 400.00 to fix it. I did it myself for 50.00. My first oil change was 110.00. Nothing special about changing the oil and filter. I now change it myself. I kept it for 3 years. Be prepared, to buy a new set of tires every few years. Now I wish I had not.

    Had the harmonic balancer replaced
    Changed both belts
    Changed another pulley
    Replaced the blinker

same hvac control problem on our c5. very simple for us to fix. reveal the printed circuit board , grab tweezers and unsolder the group of flat resistors (6 or 8, I think). (Most of them have defective solder adhesion to the print on one end. You can just heat one side at a time and if the resistor drops, the other end was defective.) Re-tin the print, and sweat solder the resistors back on.

I recently did the solder reflow of the hvac display, was not particularly easy but not entirely difficult either, however Im a master technician by trade, so ive soldered quite a few things in my day. The thing is that you need to be really careful with the iron and sure about what items need to be reflowed. Im sure youve probably already tackled it but yeah definitely go for it!

I have 2 C5's. A 97 with 230,000 miles and a 2004 with 42,000 miles. I would almost bet that you light and turn signal problems are going to be a bad ground issue. The oil pressure sensor problem is not that bad. You can use a long pair of needle nose plyers to pull the wire and the get a socket and extension with a wobble joint and you can get it down behind the manifold to loosen it up. Some people are faster than others to get it. But on average I would say start to finish is a couple of hours at best. Good luck. Great car for the money. Also a good video.

Great Vid I wish I had a video like this before I bought my LT1 Optijunk 92' vette...Okay where do I start with mine.. 2000 all the same issues(I think thats why they end up for sale) as you had but to expand particularly the oil pressure sender unit they literally suck ass so trust me YOU WILL end up cutting an access panel in the cowl after you spend 3hrs trying to fit a 27mm socket back there only to have it go out 3mos later.. I ended finding a guy on amazon that was selling them for 6 bucks when they cost about 3x that soooo.. I bout like 8 of them because you WILL have it go out again and replacing it in 5min instead of hours... you will cut it.. AND take note they also fail in the OTHER direction!! everyone talks about them pegging the gauge well Ive had them fail to where theres NO oil pressure and THAT is scarier.. A new oil pump is basically an engine rebuild but good thing when presented with this scenario, a failed oil pump will INSTANTLY sound like someone tossed a jar of quarters into the crankcase so IF it says Zero pressure with a smooth idle... its the oil sender but failed in the opposite direction..
CLUTCH: You WILL be doing this around 120k usually the slave cylinder will fail first with the pedal sticking to the floor and its connected inline with the drive shaft sooo if that happens a new cylinder is only $70 BUT the labor to get to it is $1500-$1800.. in fact the driveline is ALL LABOR so dont go cheap PERIOD even if the clutch is good replace it with the LS7 version (part# LUK 04-905) its a stiffer, grabbier clutch as a replacement unless youre modding the engine if not the kits only $275 ALSO.. get a Hinson Remote bleeder since theres no way to do it(except for the ranger method) to purge the clutch dust that accumulates and eventually will lead to clutch failure again.. so while they have the back end down, replace master seals, axle seals, differential gasket, torque tube gaskets..
LIGHTS Go LED all the way.. Headlights may not draw enough voltage to activate the lift motors in my case reversing the polarity fixed it but I have to remember that the lights get out of sync and I have to put he highbeam on before turning them on annoying when I forget but the brightness over regular bulbs is night and day..literally.. make sure the LEDs are 12000 lumens for the highbeans and 8000 lumens for Lo's temp = 6500k is bluish white (incandescent) I recently had tried to make an additional instake vent with the front nose until I discovered it actually didnt go where I thought it went and now I had a big hole in front so I re-purposed it and installed a set of Angel Eyes + LED Fogs for a Jeep cherokee and the Angel eyes work as DRLs with the corner lights (always on) the fogs turn on at the second position and theyre bright enough to drive without the headlights on if i choose.. Corner DRLs are switchbacks
Heres with them in DRL mode: drive.google.com/file/d/1BxH_mCZpbxE-qjfR86qXCNcE0O7GG7Ry/view?usp=sharing

Have you tried reading the codes thru the D.I.C.... I have an 04." 24 hrs at lemans special edition" convert. lemans blue. bought in 2015. 81000 miles. Reflector missing in door. Grille broken in dashboard. Side marker lights inop. Dry rotted tires and bad tpms. On the good side. The interior was in almost perfect condition. Seats were worn but not all screwed up in the bolsters. the top is in perfect working order. The paint job was in very good shape. Everything from the radio to the gauges all operational. I caught the tire problem before I bought it so I got a free set of Bridgestone runflats. The pressure sensors came from Les Schwab for $400.00. right now it's in complete running order. The LS 1 engine and the under the hood is showroom clean and runs great. Only problem is premium fuel is about $3.60 a gal now. Find a good auto shop and get it done. The Corvette is America's sport car.

My mom’s 2007 Tahoe just had the same problem with the oil pressure sending unit (her gauge was reading 0 psi). I had to sit on the front of the SUV with my feet in the engine bay and reach all the way to the back of the motor, right up against the fire wall, and replace the part blindly. It wasn’t terrible, but if my hands were any bigger it would have been a nightmare haha. Best of luck on fixing up your C5, I really want one and I’ll have enough saved up come Spring 2021!

I did the oil pressure sensor back in 08 on mine, then it started leaking so this time I did the relocation kit to move it under the fuel rail cover. Now I never have to take my intake manifold off again. I'm lucky I haven't lost a fog light yet, but I dont use them much. Changing those running light bulbs is not fun. I always scrape my hand. I did the HVAC diagram on corvette forum. Do leds for the bulbs while you are there. And it is the 8 surface mount resistors that need to be reflowed. That will fix the screen.

As a C5 owner, if you're going to be fixing the flasher and putting in clear lenses up front, go ahead and get the hyperflash kit and put switchbacks and all LEDs in. It's so much brighter, plus LEDs in your backup lights will keep you from turning them brown from the heat.

My 2004 C5 does the exact same thing with the turn signals. I did see a UA-cam video about correcting “hyper flashing” & it involves ordering a hyper flash kit from corvette envy. The cost of the kit is less than $50, takes about an hour to install the kit.

  • @novaseline4u

I own a 2001 C5 convertible that I bought brand new. I just addressed the flasher issue. The switch is a PITA to get out. In the end, I removed the flasher button, center console, left knee bolster, radio, and HVAC control unit to access the switch. The switch fits in a tubular pocket that is part of the center dash vent assembly, from the rear of the panel. In the end, I forced in a full sized .025 feeler gauge into the instrument panel along the top of the switch, between the switch and the 'tube', in order to release the retaining tab. I released the bottom tab by pressing it in with a small screwdriver via the top left of the radio compartment. Then I was able to push it toward the front of the car, and out of the pocket. After replacement, the turn signals worked every time, but flashed fast. Be prepared for this. Another reproduction switch did the same thing. (They are not available from GM anymore). The fix is installation of a 'hyperflash' harness. I recommend trying the signals and flashers BEFORE sliding the new switch into the instrument panel. Just in case....
Watch out for grounding issues too, if you encounter any strange electrical issues. Corvette Forum is your best friend in these instances. The C5 is a great car, enjoy it!!!

  • @302vettelife2
    @302vettelife2 4 роки тому +1

All of these are pretty simple fixes. Remove the Intake to do the OPS. It's a 45 minute job, not including the cleaning you'll want to do. I would recommend not replacing the flasher in the dash and buying a 'hyper flash' harness. It's about 40 bucks and you'll need it when you do the LED updates anyway. It completely bypasses the flasher in the dash. I would guess that someone put an amber bulb in one side of your side markers. Also, the side marker sockets are prone to melt. It could be a ground issue. Replace the lens and put LEDs in and you'll be good. The sockets are readily available if you need to replace one. Not sure on the reverse lights, but I would guess a switch. Correct on the HVAC. Pull the control panel (great time to do the hyper flash harness) and resolder the back, Plenty of vids about it. I did it to mine. Easy fix. You have a $100 worth of repairs and about 2 hours in labor in front of you.

Great review! I own a 2004 Z06 with 60,000 miles on it. I have encountered a number of minor issues all fairly simple fixes. The Z06 didn’t come with fog nights so I installed PIAA motorcycle driving lights. I find it curious that all your exterior light issues are on the driver’s side. There are a number of common grounds on you car, might be a place to start. The Corvette Forum has a great technical section and some seriously experienced mechanics to help with any issues you may encounter. One upgrade you may consider is Bixenon headlights, those factory headlights are near useless if you drive at night. I also have an MGW short throw shifter which improves the driving experience.

The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) is problem prone on these too. If you haven't had the problem yet, you will. Messages like "Service Active Handling", 'Service Traction Control", etc. The problem is the solder joints deteriorate in the EBCM relay. It can be easily fixed if you have at least a reasonable skill level, and no need to buy a new or updated EBCM.

You can buy a a/c unit on eBay then watch a video on how to install it. The oil pressure on the other hand is very important since I check that all the time while I’m driving. But right now what you also might want to do is make sure that rain doesn’t get into your car. This is a common issue with these cars. I’ve experienced it with my car it sucks really bad and hopefully I don’t get mold in my car. Good luck with that C5 that is also a great price for that one. I got mine for 15k but it has 30k miles on it.

I replaced the oil pressure sender without removing the intake because wiring, fuel lines and such make it complicated. More specifically, on my 02 with 80,000 miles, I changed the rocker cover gaskets first and that work gave me the impression that the wiring was stiff, maybe even brittle. I ended up drilling a 2" hole directly above the sender. Highly recommended as you don't want to cross thread the new sender into the aluminum block!
P.S. The old sender was not just pegged at 80 PSI, it was leaking, a lot!

Just did the oil pressure sending unit yesterday. Came up on my 50k mile C5 after a long road trip. Lucky for me, it was a simple fix. Part is approx $30, and the repair isn't hard if you buy a wobble socket to get behind the intake manifold. I had a friend with little hands help me reach behind to unplug and replace it and it was done in about 15-30 mins and cost less than $50 for the part, my 1 1/16 deep socket, and the wobble extension.

The heater control is super easy. Soldered mine in about 2 minutes. Flux is your friend as is the thinnest solder you can find. Flasher is easy except I think you might have to take the radio surround out to get to it. Mine had a few issues. Abs unit needed the solder repair that is all over the internet. Headlight gear replacement. I had a few electrical issues that were completely resolved by changing the ignition switch. Keep the battery charged if it sits. All sorts of issues if your battery is low.

I have a 1990 C4/C5 conversion with a non-stock engine (roller cam, etc). Which is only relevant because the transmitter on top of the engine blew and dumped its oil over the engine. Fortunately it happened near a garage and replacement was uneventful. I haven't had any problems since though the analog gauge pegs when cold.

About the oil pressure sending unit you can use a swivel long extension and a 27mm deep socket and get it from back of the intake on the drivers side and buy one with a lifetime warranty from autozone. I bought a brand new delco one and it went out in less than two weeks.

Just a heads up. Avoid the 97-2000 models. They have an EBCM issue that usually can't be fixed. They no longer make that part. If you get a C5 go 2001 or higher

The biggest downside of the EBCM going out is just losing your anti-lock brakes, I've heard. I have a '98, hopefully mine stays working.

First the running lights are a problem… the sockets melt. This can cause the signal problem if the bulb is put in wrong. The oil pressure problem is the sending unit. The hazard switch goes bad. Finally, the eight resistors in the HVAC unit is the display problem. I’m an ASE CMAT and I’ve fixed all these problems on my C5 plus, many others. I hope this helps…

Oh search you tube to help you find all the grounding points on the c5 frame they will need to be cleaned up a little to ensure all your electric stuff works properly. Also get that yellow top battery it’s excellent for corvettes. I also upgraded my wiring to the big three with a heavy duty 600 amp alternator helped with that pesky stability traction control light. If you wanna keep that light out brake a little aggressively it needs some exercise.

Had the same problem with my C5/Z06. Turns out it was a wire grounding out on the frame. I had it fixed at a shop. After removing the passenger side seat, and most of the rear interior. It was repaired;)

I was kicked in the butt by buying a 2000 Corvette (35 K mi) while the transmission fluid seepage from the rear diff had metal shavings in it. I got my $17 K back, and the dealer flat bed his 2000 Corvette back 100 miles to Illinois. So, I still want a Corvette, and am looking at a 2003 50th Anniversary edition.(49 K mi) Ready to pull the trigger so I have it inspected. ($107.49) Fluid seepage from Trans pan, fluid coming from rear diff (different car) same problem, oil seepage from timing cover, and all 4 shocks leaking Hydraulic fluid. Dealer says - no PROBLEM! and will NOT fix anything. I RAN, and kept running away from a "Corvette". I am SO, SO HAPPY with my new 2007 SATURN SKY convertible with 4000 miles.... C-YA!

wow not bad, I paid $8000 for a vette with 160k miles... yours may have been a better deal lol. I've already had to fix a lot of issues on mine. All of the issues you explained I had the same and more and fixed them all. The oil pressure one was the hardest fix because i used a weird long tool to fix it, my tail lights were even worse and had a hack job wiring in the back, but i also had to replace the hazard switch. The resoldering to fix the screen wasnt too hard, it was very repetitive so once you got down 1 or 2 of them the rest was easy.

With the mileage you have please do yourself a favor and check the alternator pulley it’s a plastic resin/composite type with a steel hub and mine was slipping when I bought mine , was told it was failing and it was going to be changed by previous owner but I was itching to take it so I drove it home and it let go ...... thankfully in my driveway as I was backing in .... they supposedly last about 70-80,00 miles ... give the engine bay the once over and make sure the belts and pulleys are ok..

Replace the the hazard light switch, it's not too bad, had the same problem in my 01. Radio has to come out, bout an hour- 2 hour job. Good as new. Same with the OPSU remove the intake, I'd go ahead and stop at a parts store and get some new intake gaskets, also be careful with all the vaccum lines, they can be a real pain in the ass.

C5s are known to be plagued with electrical problems. Forums are filled with solutions. And be prepared to change out the clutch and torque tube bearings (I bet those are about shot at this point). And take care of the interior because the vinyl covering the dash, doors, power window switches, etc. is thinner than paper.

Southern turn signals work differently. Drivers here in SC signal their intention to turn by slowing down a mile before the turn. The actual turn signal only comes on in mid-turn, if at all. Also, instead of Keep Right Except To Pass, the rule here is Keep Left Except To Exit. FWIW, the backup bulbs on my '96 were fine. It was the SOCKETS that failed. LOL. I like the C5, except for that Kardashian butt. Good luck.

I have an 01 Z51 w/ 111k, bought it 3 years ago with 96k - (it's a daily). Just wait until your ABS module takes a crap. I haven't fixed mine - so it's like I have competitive mode on all the time without ABS or traction control. Also my passenger window actuator and lock module do not work. Other than replacing the water pump and overflow tank. It's been mechanically solid.

Check the connector that is inside the rubber bootie that runs from the door to the jamb, containing the door wiring. Pop the bootie off at the jamb end and fish for the connector. Make sure it is seated well. There is one wire that may be partially exposed. Tape that up. Liquid tape is supposed to be really good on that. It is a serial network wire, and can really raise havoc if it touches anything. Same thing applies to the driver side.

I had the problem with the climate control screen and sending it out was like $50 much better than doing the soldering yourself. You can get into a lot of trouble trying to save $50. You don't have to remove the whole center console, just unbolt and move it back a little to get the dash plate out.
